Abstract:Haptic interactions between human and machines are essential for information acquisition and object manipulation. In virtual reality (VR) system, the haptic sensing device can gather information to construct virtual elements, while the haptic feedback part can transfer feedbacks to human with virtual tactile sensation. Therefore, exploring high-performance haptic sensing and feedback interface imparts closed-loop haptic interaction to VR system. This review summarizes state-of-the-art VR-related haptic sensing and feedback techniques based on the hardware parts. For the haptic sensor, we focus on mechanism scope (piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric) and introduce force sensor, gesture translation, and touch identification in the functional view. In terms of the haptic feedbacks, methodologies including mechanical, electrical, and elastic actuators are surveyed. In addition, the interactive application of virtual control, immersive entertainment, and medical rehabilitation is also summarized. The challenges of virtual haptic interactions are given including the accuracy, durability, and technical conflicts of the sensing devices, bottlenecks of various feedbacks, as well as the closed-loop interaction system. Besides, the prospects are outlined in artificial intelligence of things, wise information technology of medicine, and multimedia VR areas.
MoveVR: Enabling Multiform Force Feedback in Virtual Reality Using Household Cleaning Robot.

Abstract:Haptic feedback can significantly enhance the realism and immersiveness of virtual reality (VR) systems. In this paper, we propose MoveVR, a technique that enables realistic, multiform force feedback in VR leveraging commonplace cleaning robots. MoveVR can generate tension, resistance, impact and material rigidity force feedback with multiple levels of force intensity and directions. This is achieved by changing the robot's moving speed, rotation, position as well as the carried proxies. We demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of MoveVR through interactive VR gaming. In our quantitative and qualitative evaluation studies, participants found that MoveVR provides more realistic and enjoyable user experience when compared to commercially available haptic solutions such as vibrotactile haptic systems.

Abstract:The virtual haptics is a crucial aspect of immersive virtual reality, extending the traditional experiences of sight and hearing. The vibration can provide direct normal vibration and friction reduction, making it a promising method to realize virtual haptics. However, the optimum perceptual threshold of skin for vibration is 100 Hz to 500 Hz, resulting in a too low vibrotactile resolution. The conflict between the low perceptual frequency and high resolution still remains challenges. In this paper, a low-frequency envelope wave methodology is proposed to realize the localized vibrotactile feedback. The high-frequency components are modulated into a lowfrequency envelope waveform, which provides low-frequency perception and high resolution at the same time. Due to hardware limitations, the modes must be truncated and minimized as much as possible. This requirement conflicts with achieving localized vibration at arbitrary points and further implementing complex vibration patterns. Therefore, a modal optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the inverse problem. The modal participation coefficients is obtained, basing on the evaluation index that ensures the frequency of the envelope wave and the vibration pattern quality. The localized vibration patterns including multiple points, points of proportional amplitude, bar and circle are achieved with a resolution of 3 cm and a perception frequency of about 200 Hz. This method is expected to be applied to virtual reality, blind assistance, and other potential applications to enhance tactile interaction experiences.

Abstract:To provide more immersive experience in VR, high-fidelity vibrotactile feedback is one of the most important task to make VR user can feel virtual objects. In this work, we propose a mobile-based vibrotactile feedback system called FingerVIP, which provides an intuitive and efficient way for VR application/game designers to input proper vibration configuration of each target vibrotactile feedback. Our system uses pressure sensors attached on fingers as the controllers to manipulate the vibration configuration, including amplitude, frequency, and time duration. We utilized the proposed FingerVIP to set three kinds of vibrotactile feedback in a VR sports game and validated that FingerVIP successfully helped game designers reduce the number of iteration and the time for configuring vibration.

Abstract:During the last decade, haptics has been a new emerged and interesting subject for many researchers, which can be classified into three topics such as human haptics, machine haptics and computer haptics. Haptic rendering is the most important technology for computer haptics, which means the process of calculating the force or tactile feedback to give the user a sense of touch or interaction with the virtual object. This paper provides a detailed and comprehensive survey of the methods and technologies for haptic rendering in the past 5 years, mainly from 2010–2015, including haptic rendering for rigid–rigid interaction, haptic rendering for rigid–deformable interaction, haptic rendering for rigid–fluid interaction, haptic rendering for image- and video-based interaction, and texture and tactile rendering. The main research efforts and the typical algorithms are discussed, and the new ideas and research progresses are investigated, then the conclusions and future directions are summarized.

Abstract:AbstractThe use of virtual reality technology has become popular in modern theme parks across the world. Attractions using virtual reality technologies offer highly immersive experiences as if people are really staying in fictional worlds that the theme parks like to create. Haptic feedback is an important piece in virtual reality, where it can increase the immersion and enjoyment, but most virtual reality attractions in theme parks do not offer enough haptic feedback. In this paper, we present HapticDaijya, which is a waist-worn robot capable of giving various haptic and tactile feedback on the torso, neck, face, arms and hands. We present the design and implementation of HapticDaijya. Then, we show a user study and analyze the results for investigating its feasibility. Also, we present preliminary evaluation results that gauged the user’s accuracy in distinguishing the locations of taps applied on the chest, as well as general usability and user acceptance.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) offers immersive visual and auditory experiences, transporting users to alternate realities. However, existing VR systems lack realistic haptic feedback mechanisms, resulting in unsatisfactory immersive experiences. In this study, we developed and tested a haptic glove that simulates realistic tactile sensations, enhancing user interaction with virtual artifacts. Our research investigates the impact of finger-specific vibrotactile feedback (FSVF) on user experience in virtual museum environments. Using a mixed-methods approach, 30 participants engaged in object-manipulation tasks in three settings: no haptic feedback, standard controller feedback, and vibrotactile glove feedback. The findings demonstrate that the vibrotactile glove approach considerably improves user accuracy, efficiency, immersion, and satisfaction compared with other traditional interaction methods. Participants completed tasks more accurately and quickly with the glove, reporting high levels of engagement and immersion. The results highlight the potential of advanced haptic feedback in transforming virtual reality technology, particularly for educational and cultural applications. Further, they provide valuable insights for designing and applying future haptic technology in immersive environments.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) not only expands the learning field and enriches the learning experience, but also provides an effective presentation for scarce educational resources. However, because VR mainly depends on image processing technology, its application in the field of education mostly stays at the level of knowledge observation, and many challenges are gradually exposed, such as untimely interaction and weak sense of existence. In recent years, haptics has gradually become the development frontier of human-computer interaction, breaking through the limitation of single visual stimulation of VR to a great extent. Some researchers began to explore the teaching mode of VR with haptics, in order to mobilize learners’ multi-sensory stimulus responses such as hearing, touch, force and movement, and enhance learners’ on-the-spot experience and flow experience. In order to deeply explore the effectiveness of VR with haptics in teaching and explore the regulatory variables affecting this teaching method, 1646 academic papers published from 2010 to 2020 were screened based on WOS and Scopus databases. After meta-analysis of 50 selected research data, it is found that: (1) from the perspective of overall effect, VR with haptics can significantly improve learners’ learning performance and efficiency; (2) Through the analysis of the effects of three regulatory variables, it is found that VR with touch has a positive impact on learning performance; VR with haptics has a positive impact on learning efficiency, especially for learners who have no previous learning experience and take practical skills as their learning goal for a long time. This discovery provides an important data reference for building an effective “virtual reality with haptics” teaching scene.

Abstract:Virtual reality provides users with an interactable environment based on the real world. In addition, the users can use wearable devices to detect the environmental conditions and project real-world body movement to the virtual world. The development of Virtual Reality highly depends on the hardware devices. In that way, the wearable tactile feedback system is considered as a reasonable choice. The article will mainly focus on three parts about the feedback system. First, how the system works and what kind of sensors and hardware devices are contained in the system will be discussed. How they are connected will be investigated as well. Secondly, three articles about the researches done by others will be introduced, including the sensors' materials, the system's improvement, and the application and future of the system. Finally, the particular application of the system in Virtual Reality will be presented. The research of passage will be greatly valuable for the further study of the wearable tactile feedback system in Virtual Reality.

Abstract:The very recent concept of metaverse highlights the importance of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which associates with a wide variety of applications in entertainment, medical treatment, and human–machine interfaces. The current VR/AR technologies mainly rely on visual interaction, while immersive experience in VR and AR highly demands sensational feedback, such as haptic and temperature with noticeable quality in wearable or even skin-integrated formarts. In this article, we report a wearable and flexible haptic interface based on electromagnetic vibrotactile actuators with high wearability and stability. By adopting double layers of copper (Cu) coils at the top and bottom of the magnetic disc, an enhanced electromagnetic field can be generated. Additionally, the intensity of the haptic feedback can be modulated according to sensed pressure in the virtual world by adjusting the value of power input and frequency. The actuator exhibits high stability and tolerance upon environmental, cyclic, and impact resistance tests. Finally, the actuators are developed into the soft VR interfaces for mounting on forearms, fingers, and hands to verify their superiority over conventional haptic actuators in the aspects of performance and applications.

Abstract:Haptic feedback may support immersion and presence in virtual reality (VR) environments. The emerging market of consumer devices offers first devices which are expected to increase the degree of feeling being actually present in a virtual environment. In this paper we introduce a novel evaluation that examines the influence of different types of haptic feedback on presence and performance regarding manual tasks in VR. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive user study involving 14 subjects, who performed throwing, stacking and object identification tasks in VR with visual (i.e., sensory substitution), vibrotactile or force feedback. We measured the degree of presence and task-related performance metrics. Our results indicate that regarding presence vibrotactile feedback outperforms haptic feedback which performs better than visual feedback only. In addition, force feedback significantly lowered the execution time for the throwing and the stacking task. In object identification tasks, the vibrotactile feedback increased the detection rates compared to the vibrotactile and force feedback, but also increased the required time of identification. Despite the inadequacies of the still young consumer technology, there were nevertheless strong indications of connections between presence, task fulfillment and the type of haptic feedback.

Abstract:The utilization of high-resolution haptic feedback devices in a virtual reality (VR) environment can increase the precision of controlling remotely operated vehicles and reduce training costs for subsea construction operations. This paper introduces a novel flexible-driven wearable pin-array device. The spatial separation of the control box and actuator allows the device to attain natural and seamless interactive movements while delivering high-density haptic feedback in VR. The pin array consists of 25 haptic pin modules that run on a linear servo motor via a flexible shaft for force transmission. The analysis and calculation of the flexible transmission resistance effect using the haptic pin module’s shaft length and bending radius were conducted. A series of experiments was performed to gather comprehensive data on the pin module’s output, transmission resistance and error, and response delay to optimize its structural design and transmission strategy. The device’s effectiveness in rendering shape and coarse texture was evaluated via two user studies. The results affirm that the introduced device enables users to precisely discern seven shapes and four distinct coarse surfaces.

Abstract:<p>Emerging virtual and augmented reality technologies can transform human activities in myriad domains, lending tangible, embodied form to digital data, services, and information. Haptic technologies will play a critical role in enabling human to touch and interact with the contents of these virtual environments. The immense variety of skilled manual tasks that humans perform in real environments are only possible through the coordination of touch sensation, perception, and movement that together comprise the haptic modality. Consequently, many research groups are vigorously investigating haptic technologies for virtual reality. A longstanding research goal in this area has been to create haptic interfaces that allow their users to touch and feel plausibly realistic virtual objects. In this progress report, the perspective on this unresolved research challenge is shared, guided by the observation that no technologies can even approximately match the capabilities of the human sense of touch. Factors that have it challenging to engineer haptic technologies for virtual reality, including the extraordinary spatial and temporal tactile acuity of the skin, and the complex interplay between continuum mechanics, haptic perception, and interaction are identified. The perspective on how these challenges may be overcome through convergent research on haptic perception, mechanics, electronics, and material technologies is presented.</p>

Abstract:Background: Virtual reality (VR) is a combination of technologies that allow the user to interact with a computer-simulated environment with the experience of immersion, interactivity, and imagination. However, ergonomic problems related to virtual reality have adverse effects on the health and experience of users, which restrict the application of virtual reality technology. Objective: The paper aims to provide an overview of the ergonomics evaluation of VR for further development of software and hardware of VR. Methods: This paper describes and discusses the ergonomics issues involved in the software and hardware of VR from three aspects: visual, physiological, and cognitive. The paper also summarizes the research methods and evaluation metrics. Results: Many attempts have been made to study ergonomics issues of VR, mainly including pressure, muscle fatigue, thermal comfort, visual fatigue, and motion sickness. Ergonomics studies are very valuable for research related to virtual reality. There is a summary table that lists the main evaluation metrics and methods. Conclusions: According to current research, this review gives three recommendations for further research on VR, which will be helpful for further human-centered research and design work within the VR industry.

Abstract:We often interact with our environment through manual handling of objects and exploration of their properties. Object properties (OP), such as texture, stiffness, size, shape, temperature, weight, and orientation provide necessary information to successfully perform interactions. The human haptic perception system plays a key role in this. As virtual reality (VR) has been a growing field of interest with many applications, adding haptic feedback to virtual experiences is another step towards more realistic virtual interactions. However, integrating haptics in a realistic manner, requires complex technological solutions and actual user-testing in virtual environments (VEs) for verification. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent wearable haptic devices (HDs) categorized by the OP exploration for which they have been verified in a VE. We found 13 studies which specifically addressed user-testing of wearable HDs in healthy subjects. We map and discuss the different technological solutions for different OP exploration which are useful for the design of future haptic object interactions in VR, and provide future recommendations.

Virtual Environments for Hand Rehabilitation with Force Feedback.

Abstract:Within recent years, an increasing number of researches that leverage virtual reality VR applications to improve motor rehabilitation have been conducted. These computer-based tools to various degrees help with motor rehabilitation for hand/arm impairment. Compared to the conventional therapy, people are more engaged and interested when they are being trained with the VR, leading to equal or higher improvements in terms of functional use of the hand/arm. In this paper, a VR-based platform for hand/arm rehabilitation is developed using delta3d, an open-source game and simulation engine of high-level interfaces to graphics and physics libraries. The platform provides not only visual information but also force feedback to users. Contrasted to previous similar researches, the contact force is directly extracted from the physics engine through virtual sensors. The effectiveness of virtual sensors is experimentally validated, and the relationship between joint angles and contact forces over time is presented. Finally, a training paradigm for hand impairment patients is proposed for future validation.
The user experience of distal arm-level vibrotactile feedback for interactions with virtual versus physical displays

Abstract:Haptic feedback, a natural component of our everyday interactions in the physical world, requires careful design in virtual environments. However, feedback location can vary from the fingertip to the finger, hand, and arm due to heterogeneous input/output technology used for virtual environments, from joysticks to controllers, gloves, armbands, and vests. In this work, we report on the user experience of touch interaction with virtual displays when vibrotactile feedback is delivered on the finger, wrist, and forearm. In a first controlled experiment with fourteen participants and virtual displays rendered through a head-mounted device, we report a user experience characterized by high perceived enjoyment, confidence, efficiency, and integration as well as low perceived distraction, difficulty, and confusion. Moreover, we highlight participants' preferences for vibrotactile feedback on the finger compared to other locations on the arm or through the VR controller, respectively. In a follow-up experiment with fourteen new participants and physical touchscreens, we report a similar preference for the finger, but also specific nuances of the self-reported experience, not observed in the first experiment with virtual displays. Overall, our results depict an enhanced user experience when distal vibrotactile feedback is available over no vibrations at all during interactions with virtual and physical displays, for which we propose future work opportunities for augmented interactions in virtual worlds.

Abstract:Interest in the devices for rehabilitation applications have been increasing. And the devices before have proved that they might assist in and quantify the rehabilitation for upper limbs disable caused by stroke. This paper is to introduce rehabilitation application of a haptic device based on virtual reality technology, which is compact, portable and modular. The focus here is a device with force feedback designed to provide five degrees of freedom, which are rotation, opposition, translation, pitch and yaw. With five degrees of freedom above, the device can help individuals with arm weakness do their exercise and make patients achieve favorable rehabilitation efficacy during their upper limbs rehabilitation.

Abstract:Relocation of haptic feedback from the fingertips to the wrist has been considered as a way to enable haptic interaction with mixed reality virtual environments while leaving the fingers free for other tasks. We present a pair of wrist-worn tactile haptic devices and a virtual environment to study how various mappings between fingers and tactors affect task performance. The haptic feedback rendered to the wrist reflects the interaction forces occurring between a virtual object and virtual avatars controlled by the index finger and thumb. We performed a user study comparing four different finger-to-tactor haptic feedback mappings and one no-feedback condition as a control. We evaluated users' ability to perform a simple pick-and-place task via the metrics of task completion time, path length of the fingers and virtual cube, and magnitudes of normal and shear forces at the fingertips. We found that multiple mappings were effective, and there was a greater impact when visual cues were limited. We discuss the limitations of our approach and describe next steps toward multi-degree-of-freedom haptic rendering for wrist-worn devices to improve task performance in virtual environments.
