Abstract:<p>Emerging virtual and augmented reality technologies can transform human activities in myriad domains, lending tangible, embodied form to digital data, services, and information. Haptic technologies will play a critical role in enabling human to touch and interact with the contents of these virtual environments. The immense variety of skilled manual tasks that humans perform in real environments are only possible through the coordination of touch sensation, perception, and movement that together comprise the haptic modality. Consequently, many research groups are vigorously investigating haptic technologies for virtual reality. A longstanding research goal in this area has been to create haptic interfaces that allow their users to touch and feel plausibly realistic virtual objects. In this progress report, the perspective on this unresolved research challenge is shared, guided by the observation that no technologies can even approximately match the capabilities of the human sense of touch. Factors that have it challenging to engineer haptic technologies for virtual reality, including the extraordinary spatial and temporal tactile acuity of the skin, and the complex interplay between continuum mechanics, haptic perception, and interaction are identified. The perspective on how these challenges may be overcome through convergent research on haptic perception, mechanics, electronics, and material technologies is presented.</p>

Abstract:The very recent concept of metaverse highlights the importance of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which associates with a wide variety of applications in entertainment, medical treatment, and human–machine interfaces. The current VR/AR technologies mainly rely on visual interaction, while immersive experience in VR and AR highly demands sensational feedback, such as haptic and temperature with noticeable quality in wearable or even skin-integrated formarts. In this article, we report a wearable and flexible haptic interface based on electromagnetic vibrotactile actuators with high wearability and stability. By adopting double layers of copper (Cu) coils at the top and bottom of the magnetic disc, an enhanced electromagnetic field can be generated. Additionally, the intensity of the haptic feedback can be modulated according to sensed pressure in the virtual world by adjusting the value of power input and frequency. The actuator exhibits high stability and tolerance upon environmental, cyclic, and impact resistance tests. Finally, the actuators are developed into the soft VR interfaces for mounting on forearms, fingers, and hands to verify their superiority over conventional haptic actuators in the aspects of performance and applications.

Abstract:Haptic interaction is a fundamental approach to our perception surrounding people; at this stage, haptic interaction is mainly used in virtual reality (VR) and remote medical procedures (teleoperation). The traditional large volume, complex operation seriously affects the function of immersive. This paper develops a multi-modal sensing interactive glove system for teleoperation and VR/AR. The device is small in size and convenient to wear; we integrate temperature sensing and tactile sensing into our glove system and deliver real-time and accurate environmental signals to the wearer through the acquisition and processing of information and program-controlled regulation to better realize the fusion of virtual and real. This paper first introduces the structure and working principle of the system and analyzes its performance. Then a sensory experiment based on human hand skin was designed, and volunteers were selected to experience it.

Abstract:Haptic feedback has become crucial to enhance the user experiences in Virtual Reality (VR). This justifies the sudden burst of novel haptic solutions proposed these past years in the HCI community. This article is a survey of Virtual Reality interactions, relying on haptic devices. We propose two dimensions to describe and compare the current haptic solutions: their degree of physicality, as well as their degree of actuation. We depict a compromise between the user and the designer, highlighting how the range of required or proposed stimulation in VR is opposed to the haptic interfaces flexibility and their deployment in real-life use-cases. This paper (1) outlines the variety of haptic solutions and provides a novel perspective for analysing their associated interactions, (2) highlights the limits of the current evaluation criteria regarding these interactions, and finally (3) reflects the interaction, operation and conception potentials of "encountered-type of haptic devices".

Abstract:Haptic feedback can be used to improve immersion in virtual and augmented reality systems. However, wearable haptic devices typically provide limited feedback, such as simple vibration, and are restricted to a narrow bandwidth of tuneable frequency or to single tactile perceptions. Here, we report a skin-integrated wireless haptic interface that is based on actuator arrays and offers multimodal and complex feedback mechanisms. Different feedback modes-mechanical, electrotactile and thermal-in the interface are used to selectively activate different cutaneous receptors, providing users with diverse haptic sensations. The selective stimulating mechanism is inspired by the neural tactile sensing system and can reproduce tactile information of fine roughness, macro roughness, slipperiness, force and temperature. A haptic interface that uses thermal, mechanical and electrotactile modes of stimulation to target different receptors in the skin can provide users with diverse haptic sensations, reproducing the tactile information of fine roughness, macro roughness, slipperiness, force and temperature.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) offers immersive visual and auditory experiences, transporting users to alternate realities. However, existing VR systems lack realistic haptic feedback mechanisms, resulting in unsatisfactory immersive experiences. In this study, we developed and tested a haptic glove that simulates realistic tactile sensations, enhancing user interaction with virtual artifacts. Our research investigates the impact of finger-specific vibrotactile feedback (FSVF) on user experience in virtual museum environments. Using a mixed-methods approach, 30 participants engaged in object-manipulation tasks in three settings: no haptic feedback, standard controller feedback, and vibrotactile glove feedback. The findings demonstrate that the vibrotactile glove approach considerably improves user accuracy, efficiency, immersion, and satisfaction compared with other traditional interaction methods. Participants completed tasks more accurately and quickly with the glove, reporting high levels of engagement and immersion. The results highlight the potential of advanced haptic feedback in transforming virtual reality technology, particularly for educational and cultural applications. Further, they provide valuable insights for designing and applying future haptic technology in immersive environments.

Abstract:To provide more immersive experience in VR, high-fidelity vibrotactile feedback is one of the most important task to make VR user can feel virtual objects. In this work, we propose a mobile-based vibrotactile feedback system called FingerVIP, which provides an intuitive and efficient way for VR application/game designers to input proper vibration configuration of each target vibrotactile feedback. Our system uses pressure sensors attached on fingers as the controllers to manipulate the vibration configuration, including amplitude, frequency, and time duration. We utilized the proposed FingerVIP to set three kinds of vibrotactile feedback in a VR sports game and validated that FingerVIP successfully helped game designers reduce the number of iteration and the time for configuring vibration.

Abstract:We often interact with our environment through manual handling of objects and exploration of their properties. Object properties (OP), such as texture, stiffness, size, shape, temperature, weight, and orientation provide necessary information to successfully perform interactions. The human haptic perception system plays a key role in this. As virtual reality (VR) has been a growing field of interest with many applications, adding haptic feedback to virtual experiences is another step towards more realistic virtual interactions. However, integrating haptics in a realistic manner, requires complex technological solutions and actual user-testing in virtual environments (VEs) for verification. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent wearable haptic devices (HDs) categorized by the OP exploration for which they have been verified in a VE. We found 13 studies which specifically addressed user-testing of wearable HDs in healthy subjects. We map and discuss the different technological solutions for different OP exploration which are useful for the design of future haptic object interactions in VR, and provide future recommendations.

Abstract:Virtual reality provides users with an interactable environment based on the real world. In addition, the users can use wearable devices to detect the environmental conditions and project real-world body movement to the virtual world. The development of Virtual Reality highly depends on the hardware devices. In that way, the wearable tactile feedback system is considered as a reasonable choice. The article will mainly focus on three parts about the feedback system. First, how the system works and what kind of sensors and hardware devices are contained in the system will be discussed. How they are connected will be investigated as well. Secondly, three articles about the researches done by others will be introduced, including the sensors' materials, the system's improvement, and the application and future of the system. Finally, the particular application of the system in Virtual Reality will be presented. The research of passage will be greatly valuable for the further study of the wearable tactile feedback system in Virtual Reality.

Abstract:AbstractThe use of virtual reality technology has become popular in modern theme parks across the world. Attractions using virtual reality technologies offer highly immersive experiences as if people are really staying in fictional worlds that the theme parks like to create. Haptic feedback is an important piece in virtual reality, where it can increase the immersion and enjoyment, but most virtual reality attractions in theme parks do not offer enough haptic feedback. In this paper, we present HapticDaijya, which is a waist-worn robot capable of giving various haptic and tactile feedback on the torso, neck, face, arms and hands. We present the design and implementation of HapticDaijya. Then, we show a user study and analyze the results for investigating its feasibility. Also, we present preliminary evaluation results that gauged the user’s accuracy in distinguishing the locations of taps applied on the chest, as well as general usability and user acceptance.

Abstract:Human-Machine Interface (HMI) plays a key role in the interaction between people and machines, which allows people to easily and intuitively control the machine and immersively experience the virtual world of the meta-universe by virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) technology. Currently, wearable skin-integrated tactile and force sensors are widely used in immersive human-machine interactions due to their ultra-thin, ultra-soft, conformal characteristics. In this paper, the recent progress of tactile and force sensors used in HMI are reviewed, including piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, triboelectric, and other sensors. Then, this paper discusses how to improve the performance of tactile and force sensors for HMI. Next, this paper summarizes the HMI for dexterous robotic manipulation and VR/AR applications. Finally, this paper summarizes and proposes the future development trend of HMI.

Abstract:Haptic feedback, a natural component of our everyday interactions in the physical world, requires careful design in virtual environments. However, feedback location can vary from the fingertip to the finger, hand, and arm due to heterogeneous input/output technology used for virtual environments, from joysticks to controllers, gloves, armbands, and vests. In this work, we report on the user experience of touch interaction with virtual displays when vibrotactile feedback is delivered on the finger, wrist, and forearm. In a first controlled experiment with fourteen participants and virtual displays rendered through a head-mounted device, we report a user experience characterized by high perceived enjoyment, confidence, efficiency, and integration as well as low perceived distraction, difficulty, and confusion. Moreover, we highlight participants' preferences for vibrotactile feedback on the finger compared to other locations on the arm or through the VR controller, respectively. In a follow-up experiment with fourteen new participants and physical touchscreens, we report a similar preference for the finger, but also specific nuances of the self-reported experience, not observed in the first experiment with virtual displays. Overall, our results depict an enhanced user experience when distal vibrotactile feedback is available over no vibrations at all during interactions with virtual and physical displays, for which we propose future work opportunities for augmented interactions in virtual worlds.

Abstract:Haptic technologies are increasingly valuable for human–computer interaction in its many flavors, including, of course, virtual reality systems, which are becoming very useful tools for education, training, and rehabilitation in many areas of medicine, engineering, and daily life. There is a broad spectrum of technologies and approaches that provide haptic stimuli, ranging from the well-known force feedback to subtile pseudo-haptics and visual haptics. Correspondingly, there is a broad spectrum of applications and system designs that include haptic technologies as a relevant component and interaction feature. Paramount is their use in training of medical procedures, but they appear in a plethora of systems deploying virtual reality applications. This narrative review covers the panorama of haptic devices and approaches and the most salient areas of application. Special emphasis is given to education of persons with special needs, aiming to foster the development of innovative systems and methods addressing the enhancement of the quality of life of this segment of the population.

Peripersonal Space Tele-Operation in Virtual Reality: The Role of Tactile - Force Feedback

Abstract:In tele-operated human-robot collaboration, a human operator typically engages with a distant physical environment through a robotic system equipped with multiple sensors and actuators, allowing for haptic-based precise manipulation. Although these technical systems have been in use for years, the connection between multisensory perception and action in peripersonal space during tele-operations remains less understood. To delve deeper into this relationship, we examined distance perception in virtual peripersonal space. Participants wore an HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) featuring integrated eye-tracking (SMI) and moved a comparison object (a yellow ball) towards a target object (a blue ball) using a Geomagic Touch haptic device stylus, receiving either force feedback ('closed-loop') or no force feedback ('open loop') during the operation. They were instructed to focus on fixation points while performing the task, with SMI eye-tracking monitoring their gaze. The spatial positions of the comparison and target objects were arranged in four layouts: (i) center-to-center, (ii) centerto-peripheral (20 degrees in visual eccentricity), (iii) peripheral-to-center, and (iv) peripheral-to-peripheral. We employed seven distance levels between the objects in Experiment 1 and five distance levels in Experiment 2, using consistent methods of stimuli presentation. The findings revealed that estimation errors were significantly influenced by force feedback, spatial arrangement, and distance. Crucially, the visibility of themovement trajectory enhanced the effectiveness of tactile force feedback. Overall, this study proposes a potential guideline for human-computer ergonomic design, emphasizing the importance of force feedback for accurate targeting.
Wearable teleoperation controller with 2-DoF robotic arm and haptic feedback for enhanced interaction in virtual reality

Abstract:Introduction: Teleoperation is an essential component in fields such as medicine and manufacturing, enabling human operators to interact with remote robotic systems. A wearable device has been designed and manufactured to enhance sensitivity, wearability, and synchronization, providing users with the ability to experience the sensation of grasping virtual objects. Methods: The device incorporates a 2-DoF robotic arm, haptic sensors for finger gestures, and a Unity-powered virtual scene system. Its effectiveness was evaluated through user experiments, where participants were asked to rank the weights of three virtual balls and identify the direction of force applied to a virtual ball in separate tests. Additionally, the device's ability to render various shapes was also examined. Results: The experiments showed that 73.3% of participants accurately ranked the balls by mass, and an overall correctness rate of 87.3% was achieved for force direction identification. For shape rendering, the device yielded more accurate results for simple objects like spheres, whereas rendering more complex objects such as cups and cones was challenging. Discussion: The findings indicate that this wearable device has potential applications in haptic feedback and virtual reality contexts. Despite the challenges with complex shape rendering, the device shows promising capability in enhancing the user's immersive experience in virtual environments.
Multi-dimensional force sensor for haptic interaction: a review

Abstract:Haptic interaction plays an important role in the virtual reality technology, which let a person not only view the 3D virtual environment but also realistically touch the virtual environment. As a key part of haptic interaction, force feedback has become an essential function for the haptic interaction. Therefore, multi-dimensional force sensors are widely used in the fields of virtual reality and augmented reality. In this paper, some conventional multi-dimensional force sensors based on different measurement principles, such as resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, are briefly introduced. Then the mechanical structures of the elastic body of multi-dimensional force sensors are reviewed. It is obvious that the performance of the multi-dimensional force sensor is mainly dependent upon the mechanical structure of elastic body. Furthermore, the calibration process of the force sensor is analyzed, and problems in calibration are discussed. Interdimensional coupling error is one of the main factors affecting the measurement precision of the multi-dimensional force sensors. Therefore, reducing or even eliminating dimensional coupling error becomes a fundamental requirement in the design of multi-dimensional force sensors, and the decoupling state-of-art of the multi-dimensional force sensors are introduced in this paper. At last, the trends and current challenges of multi-dimensional force sensing technology are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Advancements of virtual reality technology pave the way for developing wearable devices to enable somatosensory sensation, which can bring more comprehensive perception and feedback in the metaverse-based virtual society. Here, we propose augmented tactile-perception and haptic-feedback rings with multimodal sensing and feedback capabilities. This highly integrated ring consists of triboelectric and pyroelectric sensors for tactile and temperature perception, and vibrators and nichrome heaters for vibro- and thermo-haptic feedback. All these components integrated on the ring can be directly driven by a custom wireless platform of low power consumption for wearable/portable scenarios. With voltage integration processing, high-resolution continuous finger motion tracking is achieved via the triboelectric tactile sensor, which also contributes to superior performance in gesture/object recognition with artificial intelligence analysis. By fusing the multimodal sensing and feedback functions, an interactive metaverse platform with cross-space perception capability is successfully achieved, giving people a face-to-face like immersive virtual social experience.

Abstract:Relocation of haptic feedback from the fingertips to the wrist has been considered as a way to enable haptic interaction with mixed reality virtual environments while leaving the fingers free for other tasks. We present a pair of wrist-worn tactile haptic devices and a virtual environment to study how various mappings between fingers and tactors affect task performance. The haptic feedback rendered to the wrist reflects the interaction forces occurring between a virtual object and virtual avatars controlled by the index finger and thumb. We performed a user study comparing four different finger-to-tactor haptic feedback mappings and one no-feedback condition as a control. We evaluated users' ability to perform a simple pick-and-place task via the metrics of task completion time, path length of the fingers and virtual cube, and magnitudes of normal and shear forces at the fingertips. We found that multiple mappings were effective, and there was a greater impact when visual cues were limited. We discuss the limitations of our approach and describe next steps toward multi-degree-of-freedom haptic rendering for wrist-worn devices to improve task performance in virtual environments.

Abstract:An untethered and lightweight pneumatic haptic glove is developed to enable realistic touch sensation in the reality–virtuality continuum. Using soft pneumatic actuators and stretchable fiber sensors, the glove renders both kinesthetic and cutaneous feedback with imperceptible delay. Significantly improved realism and user immersion are observed in user studies, demonstrating the viability in virtual training, education, and entertainment. Novel haptics technologies are urgently needed to bridge the gap between entirely physical world and fully digital environment to render a more realistic and immersive human–computer interaction. Current virtual reality (VR) haptic gloves either deliver limited haptic feedback or are bulky and heavy. The authors develop a haptic glove or HaptGlove, an untethered and lightweight pneumatic glove, that allows users to "physically" interact in a VR environment and enables both kinesthetic and cutaneous sensations naturally and realistically. Integrated with five pairs of haptic feedback modules and fiber sensors, HaptGlove provides variable stiffness force feedback and fingertip force and vibration feedback, allowing users to touch, press, grasp, squeeze, and pull various virtual objects and feel the dynamic haptic changes. Significant improvements in VR realism and immersion are observed in a user study with participants achieving 78.9% accuracy in sorting six virtual balls of different stiffnesses. Importantly, HaptGlove facilitates VR training, education, entertainment, and socialization in a reality–virtuality continuum.

Abstract:Haptic feedback can significantly enhance the realism and immersiveness of virtual reality (VR) systems. In this paper, we propose MoveVR, a technique that enables realistic, multiform force feedback in VR leveraging commonplace cleaning robots. MoveVR can generate tension, resistance, impact and material rigidity force feedback with multiple levels of force intensity and directions. This is achieved by changing the robot's moving speed, rotation, position as well as the carried proxies. We demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of MoveVR through interactive VR gaming. In our quantitative and qualitative evaluation studies, participants found that MoveVR provides more realistic and enjoyable user experience when compared to commercially available haptic solutions such as vibrotactile haptic systems.
