Abstract:We prove that the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on rational surfaces in positive characteristic by means of the lifting property to W_2(k) of certain log pairs on smooth rational surfaces. As a corollary, the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on log del Pezzo surfaces in positive characteristic.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an L-2-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hrmander's L-2 estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kahler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Girbau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem, and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We give counterexamples to the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem on ruled surfaces in positive characteristic, and prove that if there is a counterexample to the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem on a geometrically ruled surface f:X→C, then either C is a Tango curve or all of sections of f are ample.

Abstract:We show that the Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing theorem holds for a log canonical projective surface in large characteristic unless the Iitaka dimension of the round-down of the log canonical divisor is not equal to two. As an application, we prove that a log resolution of a pair of a normal projective surface and a reduced divisor in large characteristic lifts to the ring of Witt vectors when the Iitaka dimension of the log canonical divisor is less than or equal to zero. Moreover, we give explicit and optimal bounds on the characteristic unless their Iitaka dimensions are equal to zero.

Abstract:We use the liftability of the relative Frobenius morphism of toric varieties and the strong liftability of toric varieties to prove the Bott vanishing theorem, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem for log pairs on toric varieties in positive characteristic. These results generalize those results of Danilov, Buch–Thomsen–Lauritzen–Mehta, Mustaţǎ and Fujino to the case where concerned Weil divisors are not necessarily torus invariant.

Abstract:The author gives a characterization of counterexamples to the Kodaira-Ramanujam vanishing theorem on smooth projective surfaces in positive characteristic.More precisely,it is reproved that if there is a counterexample to the Kodaira-Ramanujam vanishing theorem on a smooth projective surface X in positive characteristic,then X is either a quasi-elliptic surface of Kodaira dimension 1 or a surface of general type.Furthermore,it is proved that up to blow-ups,X admits a fibration to a smooth projective curve,such that each fiber is a singular curve.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pathologies of Du Val del Pezzo surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic by relating them to their non-liftability to the ring of Witt vectors. More precisely, we investigate the condition (NB): all the anti-canonical divisors are singular, (ND): there are no Du Val del Pezzo surfaces over the field of complex numbers with the same Dynkin type, Picard rank, and anti-canonical degree, (NK): there exists an ample $\mathbb{Z}$-divisor which violates the Kodaira vanishing theorem for $\mathbb{Z}$-divisors, and (NL): the pair $(Y, E)$ does not lift to the ring of Witt vectors, where $Y$ is the minimal resolution and $E$ is its reduced exceptional divisor. As a result, for each of these conditions, we determine all the Du Val del Pezzo surfaces which satisfy the given one.

Positivity and vanishing theorems in complex and algebraic geometry

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:The global log canonical threshold of each non-singular complex del Pezzo surface was computed by Cheltsov. The proof used Kollár-Shokurov's connectedness principle and other results relying on vanishing theorems of Kodaira type, not known to be true in finite characteristic. We compute the global log canonical threshold of non-singular del Pezzo surfaces over an algebraically closed field. We give algebraic proofs of results previously known only in characteristic $0$. Instead of using of the connectedness principle we introduce a new technique based on a classification of curves of low degree. As an application we conclude that non-singular del Pezzo surfaces in finite characteristic of degree lower or equal than $4$ are K-semistable.

Effective Fujita-type theorems for surfaces in arbitrary characteristic

Abstract:Fujita's conjecture is known to be false in positive characteristic. However, if $X$ is a smooth projective variety over a field of positive characteristic and $L$ is an ample divisor on $X$, it is an open question whether linear systems of the form $\lvert K_X+aK_X+bL \rvert$ can be made basepoint-free or very ample with $a$ and $b$ only depending on the dimension of $X$. We conjecture that such $a$ and $b$ exist and prove a strong version of this conjecture for basepoint-freeness, very ampleness, and jet ampleness on smooth projective surfaces in arbitrary characteristic. We do not use the classification of surfaces. In positive characteristic, we prove these positivity properties hold for Schwede's canonical linear system $S^0(X,\omega_X \otimes \mathcal{O}_X(aK_X+bL))$. To prove these results, we prove new results on Seshadri constants, moving Seshadri constants, and Frobenius-Seshadri constants, which in the singular case are new even over the complex numbers.

Strongly Liftable Schemes and Cyclic Covers in Positive Characteristic

Abstract:A smooth scheme X over a field k of positive characteristic is said to be strongly liftable, if X and all prime divisors on X can be lifted simultaneously over W_2(k). In this paper, first we prove that smooth toric varieties are strongly liftable. As a corollary, we obtain the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for smooth projective toric varieties. Second, we prove the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for normal projective surfaces which are birational to a strongly liftable smooth projective surface. Finally, we deduce the cyclic cover trick over W_2(k), which can be used to construct a large class of liftable smooth projective varieties.
