Abstract:In the context of ongoing urbanization processes and sustainable urban development, the aim is to capture, describe, and convey to various target groups the current significance, the values, and the potentials of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services. To seek sustainable pathways, the current developments and different approaches are to be studied globally, whereas this book focuses on current processes and practices in China and Germany in more detail. The strategic goal is a long-term appreciation of the potentials and increased consideration of urban green spaces as nature-based solutions in city planning and development.

Abstract:The paper introduce the Sino-German 'Green Cities Study'. In the last decades China and Germany have experienced a rapid urbanization process caused by rural-urban migration flows, re-densification and population growth. Against this background current developments, different approaches and future challenges in the competition of green spaces and urban land consumption in China and Germany are elaborated, discussed and illustrated within case studies and good practice examples. Mainstreaming urban biodiversity and ecosystem services in urban development policies requires the establishment of adequate indicators and the integration of ecosystem services in planning systems in China and Germany.

Abstract:More than half of the world's population live in cities, and they have benefitted from the ecosystem services provided by urban biodiversity. International conventions like the Convention on Biological Diversity have provided recommendations on how to engage local governments and cities in the implementation of their strategic plans. In parallel, recognizing this, cities conserve, restore and enhance biodiversity in many practical ways. A list of general strategies adopted by cities is presented. The rich and diverse experiences of eleven cities, i.e. Abu Dhabi, Auckland, Durban, Edinburgh, Edmonton, Hyderabad, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Singapore, Toluca and Vitoria-Gasteiz, which have successfully conserved biodiversity in urbanized landscape across the globe, are shared. These cities have all applied the Singapore Index on Cities' Biodiversity as an evaluation and monitoring tool for biodiversity conservation efforts, in addition to using it innovatively for other purposes. Cities can play a pivotal role in ensuring that Target 12 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework will be achieved. Upscaling cities’ models of success would require a worldwide concerted effort involving everyone, i.e. all levels of stakeholders. Mainstreaming of biodiversity into all sectors, including commercial, economic, financial, industrial and technological, and the incorporation of biodiversity into decision-making in urban planning and management would be a game-changer. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Bringing nature into decision-making’.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions are claimed to offer an effective approach to tackle societal challenges and promote biodiversity. While research has mainly focused on biodiversity and material ecosystem services, non-material contributions and relational values of urban green spaces remain underexplored. How to balance the benefits of nature, well-being, and relational values in their design and performance evaluation remains unclear. To elicit the values expressed in public communication regarding the benefits of urban nature projects in Flanders, three online repositories that feature diverse nature-based solutions projects in the region were chosen. Using coding and quantitative content analysis of standardized descriptions from these repositories, this study found that relational values were most abundant (55%), followed by instrumental values (30%) and intrinsic values (15%), consistently so over socio-demographic and physical contexts. It was also discovered that larger projects have a higher level of multifunctionality, which is calculated based on the variety of values and value dimensions expressed, and that participation—although considered key—rarely reports on inclusivity. The findings suggest that in Flanders, a greater emphasis is placed on relational values associated with urban nature. A broader value scope for the design, management, and evaluation of urban green spaces tailored to the local context is recommended.

Abstract:Cities play important roles in the conservation of global biodiversity, particularly through the planning and management of urban green spaces (UGS). However, UGS management is subject to a complex assortment of interacting social, cultural, and economic factors, including governance, economics, social networks, multiple stakeholders, individual preferences, and social constraints. To help deliver more effective conservation outcomes in cities, we identify major challenges to managing biodiversity in UGS and important topics warranting further investigation. Biodiversity within UGS must be managed at multiple scales while accounting for various socioeconomic and cultural influences. Although the environmental consequences of management activities to enhance urban biodiversity are now beginning to be addressed, additional research and practical management strategies must be developed to balance human needs and perceptions while maintaining ecological processes.

Abstract:Green city is a development concept that has been widely embraced by the international community, especially by metropolises. In a broad sense, “green” indicates a city's overall habitability, in terms of environmental health (pollution prevention and control, carbon emissions, and air quality), public space design (environmental aesthetics and a city's vitality), equality of the social resource distribution (housing supply and wealth inequality), transportation efficiency (green commuting), and sustainability of energy consumption (efficient use of renewable energy sources). China is facing a series of issues as it heads towards its green city vision. From the perspective of spatial planning, we believe high carbon emissions are fundamentally resulted from outdated construction methods due to inefficient land use and housing supply–demand mismatch, and long commutes for workers caused by the separation of residence from workplace. From the perspective of technologies used in the construction and maintenance of transportation facilities, we believe that the penetration of alternative-fuel vehicles (AFV) in public transport remains low, and the lack of profitability of urban rail transit is a problem that should be urgently addressed. New technologies and techniques are needed to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions from the production of building materials and the construction and operation of buildings. The use of aging water and heat supply facilities leads to high loss rates. Meanwhile, China's resource recovery sector is still in its infancy, and the reliance on human labor to offer services such as waste sorting points to room for operating efficiency enhancement. This chapter discusses the goal of building green cities in the context of carbon neutrality, outlines possible policies and measures to address the above-mentioned issues, and quantifies the carbon emission reduction achieved by optimizing systems for urban planning and housing supply, and adopting new technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, the concept and connotation of urban green space and ecosystem service were expatiated, and the research advance in ecosystem service of urban green space was reviewed. The studies of ecosystem service of urban green space in overseas were focused on improving the quality of urban environment, maintaining biodiversity, providing amenity values, and ecosystem management; while in China, they were focused on the structure and function of urban green space, green quantity and quality, green equivalent, indicator system evaluation, value assessment, and application of CITYgreen model. The shortages and prospects of the researches on ecosystem service of urban green space were put forward.

Abstract:Urban ecosystems, and the services they provide, are a key focus of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically SDG 11, which emphasizes making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Green infrastructure (GI) is crucial in enhancing citizens' quality of life and achieving this goal and it can be defined as a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas designed to deliver a range of ecosystem services (ESs). These infrastructures improve ecosystem functioning, protect biodiversity, promote health, support sustainable land and water management, and boost the local green economy. This paper explores the scientific literature on GI and their ESs in cities using bibliometric science. By combining the keywords "Green Infrastructures", "Ecosystem Services", and "Cities" with VOSviewer software (1.6.20 version), we analyzed trends over time. Results show growing attention to these topics, emphasizing human well-being, urban resilience, and sustainability. The study also highlights that focusing exclusively on either "Green Infrastructure in Cities" or "Ecosystem Services in Cities" leads to fragmented insights. A more integrated examination of these three domains offers a holistic view and underscores the importance of considering ecosystem disservices. The study further identifies key research directions, including the need for a comprehensive evaluation of diverse GI types, especially those that are under-researched, such as green roofs, sports areas, and wetlands, and the underexplored role of cultural ecosystem services. Additionally, future research should consider both the benefits and disservices of GI to support better urban planning decisions. Finally, integrating biophysical, social, and economic values of ESs is critical for providing more holistic insights and enhancing sustainable urban development. The novelty of this paper lies in its integrated, holistic approach to examining GI and ESs in urban areas, with a focus on ecosystem disservices, insufficient attention to specific GI types, and the role of cultural ecosystem services—each contributing to the creation of more resilient and sustainable cities.

Abstract:Within the last few years, there has been increasing attention towards climate change and strategies enabling climate neutrality and biodiversity development. Green spaces are one of the main elements in achieving these ambitious goals. Their role has become increasingly relevant in facing climate change, especially considering that Europe aims to be the first continent to be climate-neutral by 2050. In doing so, recently, the European Commission adopted different regulations with a specific focus on the role of green spaces, introducing strategies and activities for sustainable development. The article investigates the role of green spaces in urban planning, considering three main perspectives in dealing with them: (i) the nature of their property, (ii) their ecological nature, and (iii) their social and public nature. After describing green spaces as crucial for contemporary urban development, this article will introduce a potential planning tool enabling the combination of the three different 'natures': the Urban Greening Plan. The article presents the two case studies of Barcelona and Paris, which have already adopted this instrument. The article highlights the potential of Urban Greening Plans to restore nature and biodiversity while engaging different stakeholders in co-creation processes for more sustainable development. It also critically introduces a variety of open questions that require further investigations and analyses.

Abstract:In recent years, rapid urbanization has brought about high-intensity construction and development activities, which have seriously impacted the urban ecological environment. Chinese cities have entered a new era that emphasizes the connotation and quality of urban development, social welfare, and the quality of life for residents. Residents' pursuit of a beautiful ecological environment and a social form that is suitable for both living and production is increasing. With the implementation of the "Healthy China" strategy, healthy cities, as an important aspect of this strategy, should conform to the requirements of the times. The proposal of the healthy city strategy has pointed out a new development path for cities in the new era. Urban green spaces are important spatial carriers for residents' healthy lives, the material basis of urban complex ecosystems, and indispensable spatial places for healthy urban development. Abstract:Through his recent visits to three cities facing severe and challenging living environment, the author had a deeper insight into the symbiosis between human and nature. In Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, urban construction practices against floods and for water supply encroach on natural ecological infrastructure, resulting in the exhaustion of local water resource, city sinking, and erased indigenous cultural landscape of floating gardens. In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, where water bodies are heavily polluted, scarce urban parks become the only refuge for citizens. Finally in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, estuary gates built to block floods invade the once prosperous canals, accelerating the decline of floating communities and markets and exacerbating traffic congestion and air pollution. Learning from these cases, cities must become better at territorial spatial planning and have the foresight to develop and grow while preserving and improving existing ecosystems. Essentially, territorial spatial planning and ecological restoration is to work with and by nature that would provide generous ecosystem services for humans, and, eventually, to increase people's well-being and enhance cities' development of sustainability.

Abstract:Cities are the regions which have the most intense interaction among social,economy,and environment.Along with more and more urban environmental problems,people pay more and more attentions to the urban sustainable development.Critical natural capital has especial characters such as essentiality,irreplaceability,and irreversibility,which play important roles in the sustainable developmental system.So identifying urban critical natural capital is the precondition of achieving urban sustainable development.Based on an overview of former researches,we find that urban green space has many essential ecological functions such as food supplying,wood and fiber provisioning,air purifying,noise abating,microclimate regulating,nutrient cycling,biodiversity maintaining,and some social-cultural services,which are classified into four groups(source function,sink function,life support function,human health and welfare function).The analysis of ecosystem service and characters of urban green space identifies that urban green space is an important natural capital to urban sustainable development.Finally,some operable suggestions are made to ecosystem service conservation and enhancing of green space for urban sustainable development.

Abstract:Urban green spaces as an important contributor can be a significant part of sustainable development. Developments of urban green spaces need to consider interdisciplinary and integrative approaches such as economic, political, social, cultural, management and planning aspects to improve existing urban green spaces’ facilities and services, and to optimize urban green space policies [1]. The definition of urban green spaces which is agreed on by ecologists, economists, social scientists and planners is public and private open spaces in urban areas, primarily covered by vegetation, which are directly (e.g. active or passive recreation) or indirectly (e.g. positive influence on the urban environment) available for the users [2]. Based on the studies of different cities, different researchers provide some guidelines to evaluate the nature of green spaces. Firstly, one of the main factors in determining the nature of green spaces is their quantity in the city [3]. Secondly, existing qualities like activities and experiences, and perceived benefits to the users determine the utilization of green spaces [4]. Thirdly, the functionality of those green spaces is equally influenced by the location and distribution (accessibility) in the whole city [4-6].

Abstract:Urban areas are hot spots that drive environmental change at multiple scales. Material demands of production and human consumption alter land use and cover, biodiversity, and hydrosystems locally to regionally, and urban waste discharge affects local to global biogeochemical cycles and climate. For urbanites, however, global environmental changes are swamped by dramatic changes in the local environment. Urban ecology integrates natural and social sciences to study these radically altered local environments and their regional and global effects. Cities themselves present both the problems and solutions to sustainability challenges of an increasingly urbanized world.

Abstract:The latest 10 years papers in the field of urban greenland at home and broad were detailly indexed and reviewed. The paper concluded the research achievements in the urban greenland ecosystem,development direction,effect assessment,planning design and landscape architecture plants. The authors introduced the present situation,successful urban greening notion and excellent examples abroad,and summarized its main theories and representative paradigms and wonderful greening modeling. The paper also reviewed the past development of urban greenland in China,and analyzed the current situation and existing problems in the field of urban greening and its planning. Finally,the authors prospected emphatically the research trends in the fields such as the greening principle,planning,application of information technology,three dimension and quantification of assessment of the urban green space system and multi science syncretism of landscape architecture.
