Abstract:Taking advantage of the printed electronic interconnection technology and development of radio frequency identification (RFID) chip, a novel design and integration approaches for fabricated sensing RFID tags on flexible substrates is presented in this paper. The design is a semi-passive tag which includes a RFID chip, an additional microcontroller unit (MCU), a LED, and external sensors. The antennas and all electronic components interconnects were screen-printed on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using silver ink. Their behaviors are in a good agreement with those simulations in electromagnetic simulation software. The acquisition of sensor data through answering to the RFID reader directly. Practical measurements have validated the reliability of the technique in low energy consumption and shown important advantages to monitor environment and display operating information.

Abstract:This paper presents a non-invasive design, namely RF-ray, to recognize the shape and material of an object simultaneously. RF-ray puts the object approximate to an RFID tag array, and explores the propagation effect as well as coupling effect between RFIDs and the object for sensing. In contrast to prior proposals, RF-ray is capable to recognize unseen objects, including unseen shape-material pairs and unseen materials within a certain container. To make it real, RF-ray introduces a sensing capability enhancement module and leverages a two-branch neural network for shape profiling and material identification respectively. Furthermore, we incorporate a Zero-Shot Learning based embedding module that incorporates the well-learned linguistic features to generalize RF-ray to recognize unseen materials. We build a prototype of RF-ray using commodity RFID devices. Comprehensive real-world experiments demonstrate our system can achieve high object recognition performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a tagless object detection and localization method implemented by a commercial radio frequency identification (RFID) system. Tags in the RFID system have important applications in indoor locating, and these tags are often affixed to the target object. But for some special situations, it is necessary to develop the object localization method without attached tags. We increase the diversity of the RFID communication channels by pasting tags around the location scene, thus we can obtain more information of the target object and meanwhile no attached tags are needed. The target reflectivity image inside the capture volume is constructed using non-uniform Fourier domain sampling. We simulate the reflectivity image in CST Studio Suite and test the method in read-scale rooms, where high-precision location is realized and the object contour can be observed.

Abstract:Tag scanning is an important issue to dynamically manage tag IDs in radio frequency identification (RFID) systems. Different from tag identification that collects IDs of all the tags, tag scanning first verifies whether or not a responding tag has already been identified and retrieves its ID when the answer is yes, and collects the tag's ID only when it is unidentified. In this paper, we present the first study on spot scanning with a handheld reader, which aims to scan tags in the reader's interrogation range at an arbitrarily specified position in the system. Existing studies mainly focus on continuous scanning, and they are highly time inefficient in performing spot scanning. The inefficiency stems from the small overlap between tag populations in different spot scanning operations, in which case existing solutions cannot efficiently recognize unidentified tags. We develop a novel technique called LOCK to efficiently recognize unidentified tags even when the overlapped tags are few. LOCK does not simply use a tag's reply slot index but also compact short responses from tags to efficiently distinguish unidentified tags from identified ones. The valuable compact short responses are firstly investigated, which are the keys for efficient tag identification in the paper. Based on LOCK, three tag scanning protocols are proposed to solve the spot scanning problem. Simulation results show that, for spot scanning, our best protocol reduces per tag scanning time by up to 70 percent when compared with the state-of-the-art solution. Moreover, the proposed protocols can also be employed to perform continuous scanning with better time efficiency than the best existing solutions.
RF-ISee: Identify and Distinguish Multiple RFID Tagged Objects in Augmented Reality Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we leverage RFID technology to label different objects with RFID tags, so as to realize the vision of "show me what I see from the augmented reality system". We deploy additional RFID antennas to the COTS depth camera and propose a continuous scanning-based scheme to scan the objects, i.e., the system continuously rotates and samples the depth of field and RF-signals from these tagged objects. In this way, we can accurately identify and distinguish multiple tagged objects, by pairing the tags with the objects according to the correlations between the depth of field and RF-signals. Our solution achieves an average match ratio of 91% in distinguishing up to dozens of tagged objects with a high deployment density.

Abstract:RFID technology has recently been exploited for not only identification but also for sensing including trajectory tracking and gesture recognition. While contact-based (an RFID tag is attached to the target of interest) sensing has achieved promising results, contactless sensing still faces severe challenges such as low accuracy and the situation gets even worse when the target is non-static, restricting its applicability in real world deployment. In this work, we present TagRay, a contactless RFID-based sensing system, which significantly improves the tracking accuracy, enabling mobile object tracking and even material identification. We design and implement our prototype on commodity RFID device. Comprehensive experiments show that TagRay achieves a high accuracy of 1.3cm which is a 200% improvement over the-state-of-arts for trajectory tracking. For commonly seen four material types, the material identification accuracy is higher than 95% even with interference from people moving around.

Abstract:RFID technology has recently been exploited for not only identification but also fine-grained trajectory tracking and gesture recognition. While contact-based (a tag is attached to the target of interest) sensing has achieved promising results, contactless sensing still faces severe challenges such as low accuracy and inability to sense multiple targets simultaneously in proximity, restricting its applicability in real-world deployment. In this work, we present Tamera , a contactless RFID-based sensing system, which significantly improves the tracking accuracy, enables multi-commodity tracking, and even material and shopping behavior recognition. We successfully address multiple technical challenges, and design and implement our prototype on commodity RFID devices. We test the positioning accuracy of Tamera in a 5 m × 6 m laboratory. Tamera achieves a median error of 1.3 cm and 2.7 cm for contactless single- and multi-commodity tracking, respectively. In our laboratory, two shelves commonly found in the supermarket are arranged and the goods are placed on them. Tamera successfully localizes and identifies the material type (metal, plastic, paper, and glass) of the commodities on the shelf with an accuracy higher than 95%. Tamera successfully recognizes four shopping behaviors (taking commodity, replacing commodity, buying commodity, and invoking commodity) with an accuracy higher than 93%.

Abstract:As an application of fine-grained wireless sensing, RF-based material identification follows the paradigm of RF computing that fetches the information during RF signal propagation. Specifically, the RF signal accesses the objects’ material-related information and carries the information with its electromagnetic properties. With a variety of important applications, research on RF-based material identification has gained significant progress in recent years. However, several fundamental problems remain insufficiently studied, such as the sensing models, signal processing approaches, performance and future extensions. This paper presents the first comprehensive survey of RF-based material identification. According to the basic sensing model used for sensing, we propose a taxonomy to classify the existing works into two categories: reflection-based and penetration-based. The works in each category are further grouped by the type of RF signals used, with elaborated discussion of the detailed approaches and the common challenges. We provide a framework that benchmarks the performance of the existing works, followed by a thorough discussion of future extensions.
Complete and Fast Unknown Tag Identification in Large RFID Systems

Abstract:The RFID technology greatly improves efficiency of many applications including inventory control, object tracking, and supply chain management. In such applications, it is common that new objects are added into the system or existing objects are misplaced in wrong regions. When this happens, fast and complete identification of such tags is very important. We name this problem unknown tag identification, as these tags appear to be unknown by the reader(s) currently covering them. In this paper, we propose a series of protocols to identify unknown tags completely and fast. In these protocols, we develop several novel techniques to efficiently resolve collisions caused by known tags when identifying unknown tags, which greatly improve the time efficiency. To our knowledge, this is the first work that completely identify all the unknown tags with deterministic approaches. Simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed protocols: Compared with a baseline method which collects IDs of all the tags in the system, our best protocol reduces the execution time by 63% in average and by 85% at most.

Abstract:In this communication, we present a low-cost chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) tag with a high data capacity and a wide reading range based on time-domain scattering modulation. The proposed tag consists of a slotted square patch antenna with a switchable resistor and a mechanically driven slider etched with a barcode-like metallic wire array. Encoding is achieved by the presence and absence of the metallic wire on the slider, and tag identification is obtained by sequential bit reading. A special encoding strategy is applied to improve its insensitivity to the motion velocity of the slider. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, a prototype designed to operate at 2.1 GHz was fabricated and measured, and the experimental results verified the effectiveness. Compared with the methods based on time-domain reflectometry, spectral signature, and resonator-based sequential encoding, the proposed approach provides a substantially enhanced data capacity within a narrow spectrum without sacrificing its reading range and tag size, due to the design of nonresonant code cell. Such a mechanically triggered chipless RFID tag exhibits promising potentials in some practical applications, such as personal ID and credit cards.

Abstract:With the rapid proliferation of RFID technologies, RFID has been introduced into applications such as inventory and sampling inspection. Conventionally, in RFID systems, the reader usually identifies all the RFID tags in the interrogation region with the maximum power. However, some applications may only need to identify the tags in a specified area, which is usually smaller than the reader's default interrogation region. An example could be identifying the tags in a box, while ignoring the tags out of the box. In this paper, we respectively present two solutions to identify the tags in the specified area. The principle of the solutions can be compared to the picture-taking process of an auto-focus camera, which firstly focuses on the target automatically and then takes the picture. Similarly, our solutions first focus on the specified area and then shoot the tags. The design of the two solutions is based on the extensive empirical study on RFID tags. Realistic experiment results show that our solutions can reduce the execution time by 44 percent compared to the baseline solution, which identifies the tags with maximum power. Furthermore, we improve the proposed solutions to make them work well in more complex environments.
WiMate: Location-independent Material Identification Based on Commercial WiFi Devices

Abstract:Material identification is playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives such as public security checks. X-ray-based technologies are highly radioactive because they rely on specialized devices to transmit high-frequency signals. Ultrasound-based technologies are cumbersome due to their large size. RF-based approaches necessitate the use of RFID which is usually expensive to be used in home and office environments. To this end, WiFi-based material identification approach has emerged recently as a low-cost yet effective alternative. In this paper, we propose WiMate, a noncontact material identification system leveraging only off-the-shelf WiFi devices. The key enabler of WiMate is a novel theoretical model we build to characterize how the electromagnetic wave decays when penetrating different materials. Our model identifies a unique feature for each material that only depends on the material itself. Consequently, we can leverage this feature coupling with the machine learning techniques for robust and accurate material identification. We prototype WiMate using low-cost commodity WiFi devices and evaluate its performance in real-world. The empirical study shows that WiMate can identify six different materials, i.e., board, paperboard, nickel, wood chip, iron and titanium, with an average accuracy of 96.20%.
Geneprint: Generic and Accurate Physical-Layer Identification for Uhf Rfid Tags

Abstract:Physical-layer identification utilizes unique features of wireless devices as their fingerprints, providing authenticity and security guarantee. Prior physical-layer identification techniques on radio frequency identification (RFID) tags require nongeneric equipments and are not fully compatible with existing standards. In this paper, we propose a novel physical-layer identification system, GenePrint, for UHF passive tags. The GenePrint prototype system is implemented by a commercial reader, a USRP-based monitor, and off-the-shelf UHF passive tags. Our solution is generic and completely compatible with the existing standard, EPCglobal C1G2 specification. GenePrint leverages the internal similarity among pulses of tags' RN16 preamble signals to extract a hardware feature as the fingerprint. We conduct extensive experiments on over 10 000 RN16 preamble signals from 150 off-the-shelf RFID tags. The results show that GenePrint achieves a high identification accuracy of 99.68%. The feature extraction of GenePrint is resilient to various malicious attacks, such as the feature replay attack.

The key observation is that traces generated through different methods shall be compatible if they are of one identical object. Accordingly, a Transformer-based sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) model is trained to generate a simulated trace for each candidate tag-object pair. And the trace of the right pair shall best match the observed trace directly extracted by CV. A prototype of TagFocus is implemented and extensively assessed in lab environments. Experimental results show that our system maintains a matching accuracy of over 91% in harsh conditions, outperforming state-of-the-art schemes by 27%.

Abstract:RFID-based technology innovated a new field of wireless sensing, which has been applied in posture recognition, object localization, and the other sensing fields. Due to the presence of a Fresnel zone around a magnetic field when the RFID-based system is working, the signal undergoes significant changes when an object moves through two or more different Fresnel zones. Therefore, the moving object can be sensed more easily, and most of the sensing applications required the tag to be attached to the moving object for better sensing, significantly limiting their applications. The existing technologies to detect static objects in agricultural settings are mainly based on X-ray or high-power radar, which are costly and bulky, making them difficult to deploy on a large scale. It is a challenging task to sense a static target without a tag attached in NLOS (non-line-of-sight) detection with low cost. We utilized RFID technologies to sense the static foreign objects in agricultural products, and take metal, rock, rubber, and clod as sensing targets that are common in agriculture. By deploying tag matrices to create a sensing region, we observed the signal variations before and after the appearance of the targets in this sensing region, and determined the targets' positions and their types. Here, we buried the targets in the media of seedless cotton and wheat, and detected them using a non-contact method. Research has illustrated that, by deploying appropriate tag matrices and adjusting the angle of a single RFID antenna, the matrices' signals are sensitive to the static targets' positions and their properties, i.e., matrices' signals vary with different targets and their positions. Specifically, we achieved a 100% success rate in locating metallic targets, while the success rate for clods was the lowest at 86%. We achieved a 100% recognition rate for the types of all the four objects.

PackquID: In-packet Liquid Identification Using RF Signals.

Abstract:There are many scenarios where the liquid is occluded by other items (e.g. books in a packet), in which existing RF-based liquid identification methods are generally not suitable. Moreover, status methods are not applicable when the height of the liquid to be tested changes. This paper proposes PackquID, an RF-based in-packet liquid identification system, which can identify liquid without prior knowledge. In dealing with the obstruction of other items and the unknown container, we utilize a dual-antenna model and craft a relative frequency response factor, exploring the diversity of the permittivity in the frequency domain. In tackling the variable liquid height, we extend our model to 3D scope by analyzing the electric field distribution and solving the height effect via spatial-differential model. With 500 pages of printer paper obscured, PackquID can identify 9 common liquids, including Coca-Cola and Pepsi, with an accuracy of over 86% for 4 different packets (canvas bag, paper bag, backpack, and box) and 4 different containers. Nevertheless, PackquID can still identify liquids with an accuracy rate of over 87%, even when the liquid height changes from 4 cm to 12 cm.
Trio: Utilizing Tag Interference for Refined Localization of Passive RFID.

Abstract:We study a new problem, refined localization, in this paper. Refined localization calculates the location of an object in high precision, given that the object is in a relatively small region such as the surface of a table. Refined localization is useful in many cyber-physical systems such as industrial autonomous robots. Existing vision-based approaches suffer from several disadvantages, including good lighting conditions, line of sight, pre-learning process, and high computation overhead. Also vision-based approaches cannot differentiate objects with similar colors and shapes. This paper presents a new refined localization system, called Trio, which uses passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for low cost and easy deployment. Trio provides a new angle to utilize RF interference for tag localization by modeling the equivalent circuits of coupled tags. We implement our prototype using commercial off-the-shelf RFID reader and tags. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that Trio effectively achieves high accuracy of refined localization, i.e., < 1 cm errors for several types of main stream tags.
RF-3DScan: RFID-based 3D Reconstruction on Tagged Packages

Abstract:Currently, the logistic industry has introduced 3D reconstruction to monitor the package placement in the warehouse. Previous 3D reconstruction solutions mainly utilize computer vision or sensor-based methods, which are restricted to the line-of-sight or the battery life. Therefore, we propose a passive RFID-based solution, called RF-3DScan, to perform 3D reconstruction on tagged packages, including the package orientation and the package stacking. The basic idea is that a moving antenna can obtain RF-signals from the tags attached on packages with the 1D linear mobile scanning. Through extracting phase differences to build angle profiles for each tag, RF-3DScan derives their relative positions, further determines the package orientation and the coarse-grained package stacking. By simply performing the 2D scanning, RF-3DScan can provide the fine-grained package stacking determination. We implement a prototype system of RF-3DScan and evaluate its performance in real settings. Our experiment results show that RF-3DScan can achieve about 92.5 percent identification accuracy of the bottom face, and an average error about 4.08° of thethe rotation angle. For the package stacking, 1D scanning can achieve the comparable performance in comparison with 2D scanning.

LiqRay: Non-Invasive and Fine-Grained Liquid Recognition System.

Abstract:The existing RF-based liquid identification methods commonly require a training network of liquid or the container information, such as material and width. Moreover, status quo methods are inapplicable when the solution height is lower than that of the antenna, which is generally unknown either. This paper proposes LiqRay , an RF-based solution, retaining non-invasive and fine-grained liquid recognition abilities, thus can recognize unknown solutions without prior knowledge. In dealing with the unknown container material and width, we utilize a dual-antenna model and craft a relative frequency response factor, exploring diversity of the permittivity in frequency domain. In tackling the unknown heights of solution and antenna, we devise the electric field distribution model at the receiving antenna, solving the unknown heights via spatio-differential model. Among eight different solvents, LiqRay can identify alcohol solutions with a concentration difference of 1% with 94.92% accuracy. Nevertheless, LiqRay can obtain the relative frequency response factor with a relative error of 6.7% without being affected by the height of the solution. Even if it is merely 4 cm, this is fairly lower than that of most antennas' heights, since the operating frequency is around 2 GHz.
