Abstract:The importance of understanding carbon cycling in ecosystems is increasing. It is commonly known that the terrestrial ecosystems are the major carbon sinks. Although enormous efforts have been focused on terrestrial ecosystems to investigate carbon pools and fluxes, still our knowledge is very limited. This special issue is the product of collaboration under the A3 Foresight Program (Quantifying and predicting terrestrial carbon sinks in East Asia: Toward a network of climate change research) supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The program aims to assess the size and spatial pattern of terrestrial carbon sinks in East Asia to predict the changes of carbon sinks under a changing climate, and to initiate an educational and academic network for current and future studies in ecological and environmental sciences among the East Asian countries. For the past five years (2007–2012) new approaches including satellite ecology, ecophysiology, micrometeorology, GIS/RS, and modeling and numerous field studies have been conducted to estimate terrestrial carbon sinks and their mechanisms in the region. During the project period two special journal issues were published (JPR Symposium on carbon cycles process in East Asia, 2010, Journal of Plant Research 123:391–588; Special issue: Carbon budget in East Asian ecosystems, 2010, Science China Life Sciences 53:753–908). Also meetings, workshops, seminars, and symposia have been regularly held to exchange information and knowledge among scientists involved. The current special issue is the collection of nine studies conducted in forests to investigate carbon pools and cycles. Topics broadly cover from ecophysiological analysis to climate change modeling. We express our deep appreciation to the editorial board members of Forest Science and Technology for giving us an opportunity to publish this special issue and also to all A3 Foresight Program members for their support and commitment.
