Abstract:The structure, properties, synthesis of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were reviewed. Monofunctional, difunctional and multifunctional POSS, which can be easily incorporated into common plastics via copolymerization, grafting, or blending to form truly inorganic/organic hybrid nanostructural composites, were mainly discussed. Abstract:Dendrimer is one type of macromolecules with well-defined, highly-branched and nano-scaled architectures, composed of three distinct domains: core, branches and terminal groups. Its potential functions and applications are explored based on the unique physical and chemical features due to special molecular architecture. Using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as the core of dendrimers is an effective and facile way to simplify the tedious repetitive steps of preparation and separation. Since POSS allows eight branches to radiate from a silicon-oxygen right cubic core, the dendrimers can be constructed in a well-controlled globular, three-dimensional framework, and large numbers of peripheral groups can be obtained at relatively low generation numbers. As a kind of novel nano-hybrid supermolecules, POSS-based dendrimers have attracted considerable interest in materials science. In this review, we briefly introduce the synthetic approaches of some typical POSS-based dendrimers categorized by the different chemical composition of branching units, and then focus on the potential functions and applications of this nano-hybrid material in the field of catalysis, gene and drug delivery, liquid crystals, light harvesting and energy transfer. The specific and excellent properties imparted by the incorporation of POSS into dendrimers are also presented. Finally, the advances of POSS-based dendrimers are prospected.

Abstract:Using the tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent and 40% benzyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide methanol solution as catalyst, the octaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane ((C6H5)8T8) was synthesized via the hydrolytic condensation of phenyltrichlorosilane. The obtained (C6H5)8T8 was proved to be precise and pure by FT-IR and 29Si-NMR; then with the help of aqueous tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) and using the THF as solvent, via the corner-opening reaction; the synthesized (C6H5)8T8 was reacted into the incompletely condensed POSS. In order to suppress the by-product reactions, the corner-opening reaction temperature, time and the amount of catalyst used should be well controlled. The structure of the corner-opening reaction product was determined and validated by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, elementary analysis and MALDI-TOF MS. The results indicate that the main product of the corner-opening reaction is heptaphenyltrisilanol-POSS, and its initial decomposing temperature analyzed by TGA is 516.1℃ (5%(wt) weight loss), which suggests that the obtained heptaphenyltrisilanol-POSS has good thermal stability. Compared with literature works, the reaction time of this work is much shorter and thus the yield is increased, which would make the POSS be more useful in the syntheses of organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Abstract:Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), a new kind of organic-inorganic hybrid materials, has attractted great attention in the last decade. These hybrid materials can be prepared through different methods, which provides great convenience to the design of materials. This article summarizes recent progress in hybrid electroluminescent materials and hybrid liquid crystals based on POSS, and self-assembly behavior of POSS derivatives. It is pointed out that these materials will be widely used in the field of high technology in the near future due to their excellent thermodynamic and optical properties.

Abstract:Polysilsesquioxanes are regarded as organic–inorganic hybrid materials at a molecular level. We can readily tune the properties of the materials for realizing the desired ones by changing the contents or types of organic components. In addition, the hierarchical structures have potential for generating further characteristics distinctly different from those of the constituents. From this viewpoint, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is attractive as a cornerstone in highly ordered materials. In this review, we survey recent studies on modified POSS-based functional materials and particularly explain the design concepts for applying the significant characteristics of POSS for the material properties. In the initial sections, we introduce the examples concerning intrinsic properties of POSS such as thermal stability, mechanical property, and structural features. In the latter sections, we describe the application of POSS-based materials for bio-relating functional materials. We describe the validity of POSS for molecular designing of the advanced imaging tools.

Abstract:Abstract Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) as a frontier organic/inorganic hybrid material with multiple structures has exhibited great potential in robust property extension in the past decade because of its stable cage structure and flexible modification. Recent research on the design strategies of modifying T 8 ‐POSS and various T 8 ‐POSS deviations has inspired the emergence of multidisciplinary applications. In this review, we describe the most common synthetic methods of T 8 ‐POSS, including monofunctional and octafunctional POSS deviations, and then discuss some frequently combined groups' properties, such as POSS‐cyclodextrin, POSS‐azobenzene, base‐pair ending POSS and POSS‐copolymer, and classify them based on their self‐assembly driving force. Moreover, these designations serve as advanced interactive machines with humans, including drug delivery systems, fluorescent probes, sensors and stretchable devices. Finally, we describe the prospects and challenges of the application of the expansion of smart POSS interactive materials. © 2021 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

Abstract:Owing to the tremendous advantages and unique well‐defined nanoscale structure, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) has received considerable interest in the design of novel organic‐inorganic hybrid nanomaterials with all manner of prominent capabilities, which is recognized as a new generation of promising materials for advanced applications of material science, engineering science and biomedical fields. Benefitting from the recent progress in combination of controlled/living polymerization and emerging click chemistry, POSS‐based hybrid materials with ingenious design, versatile topological structure and sophisticated multifunctionality have been successfully fabricated and developed into abundant well‐defined hybrid nanostructures with desired physicochemical properties. Tailor‐made amphiphilic molecular design and nanosized hybrid architecture provide opportunities for the self‐assembly of POSS‐based hybrid materials with unique hierarchical morphologies in selective solvents. Through the in‐depth understanding of structure‐properties relationship, POSS‐based hybrid materials can achieve the modulation of precise control of self‐assembling process and multi‐purpose applications with improved material performances. In this review, we summarize the recent advances of POSS‐based hybrid materials in molecular design, self‐assembly behavior in solutions and potential biomedical applications with main concerns on drug delivery, gene therapy, bioimaging and tissue engineering field. Abstract:Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is a 3D, cage-like nanoparticle with an inorganic Si-O-Si core and eight tunable corner functional groups. Its well-defined structure grants it distinctive physical, chemical, and biological properties and has been widely used for preparing high-performance materials. Recently, click chemistry has enabled the synthesis of various functional POSS-based materials for diverse biomedical applications. This article reviews the recent applications of POSS-based materials in the biomedical field, including cancer treatment, tissue engineering, antibacterial use, and biomedical imaging. Representative examples are discussed in detail. Among the various POSS-based applications, cancer treatment and tissue engineering are the most important. Finally, this review presents the current limitations of POSS-based materials and provides guidance for future research.

Abstract:Octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(OvPOSS) was synthesized via hydrolytic condensation of vinyltrichlorosilane catalyzed by concentrated hydrochloric acid and anhydrous FeC13.This synthesis approach was versatile,and OvPOSS was obtained rapidly at high yield(34.7%).The structure of the synthesized product was determined and validated by 1H,13C,29Si nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),elementary analysis and gel permeation chromatogram(GPC).The initial decompose temperature analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) was equal to 278.5 ℃,which showed that OvPOSS has good stability to heat.The influence of reaction conditions on the vinyltrichlorosilane hydrolytic polycondensation was studied.Increase in temperature has no significant effect on the yield of OvPOSS,but either prolonging the reaction time or enhancing concentration of methanol in solution leads to the increase of OvPOSS yield.

Abstract:Hybrid materials with superior structural and functional properties can be obtained by incorporating nanofillers into polymer matrices. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles have attracted much attention recently due to their nanometer size, the ease of which these particles can be incorporated into polymeric materials and the unique capability to reinforce polymers. We review here the state of POSS-containing polymer nanocomposites. We discuss the influence of the incorporation of POSS into polymer matrices via chemical cross-linking or physical blending on the structure of nanocomposites, as affected by surface functional groups, and the POSS concentration.

Abstract:Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) represent the new frontier in hybrid materials science and engineering, because of their well-defined nanostructure and unique dual nature combining material properties from both inorganic siloxane cage and organic groups at the periphery. Recent advances in synthetic chemistry, combined with the controlled radical polymerization techniques, have significantly influenced the construction of POSS soft gel as emerging biomaterials and beyond. In this Review, the most recent developments in the design strategies of POSS-based hybrid soft gels are presented, with respect to different functions of architectural POSS, including POSS as a crosslinker, end-cap polymer chain, pendent group, etc. In addition, the insights into the uniqueness of POSS in microstructure and their different organic substituents in the enhancement of the hydrogel performance are illustrated. These sophisticated materials with multiple functions, oriented toward advanced therapeutic applications, are further summarized into several active domains in controlled drug delivery, 3D cell culture, tissue engineering, and wound healing. The recent new applications of using POSS hybrid soft gel in environmental health are also summarized in this Review. Finally, perspectives and challenges related to the further advancement of POSS-based hybrid soft gel materials are discussed.

Abstract:Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an organic-inorganic hybrid molecule with two structural variations, closed- and open-cage configurations, referred to as completely condensed POSS (CC-POSS) and corner-opened POSS (CO-POSS), respectively. In this study, we synthesized 12 dimers by combining CC- and CO-POSS variants decorated with isobutyl or phenyl substituents to explore their structure-property relationships. The choice of substituents, both at the cage vertices and open sites, significantly affected the thermal and optical properties of the materials. Modifying the substituents on CO- and CC-POSS, which are isomers, led to significant alterations in the material properties. Notably, isomer-bearing carbazole substituents exhibited a substantially higher quantum yield (0.32) than its counterpart isomer (0.13), underscoring the crucial role of structural nuances in determining material performance. These results offer valuable insights for the design of novel silsesquioxane-based materials.
Design and architecture of low-dielectric-constant organic–inorganic hybrids from octahydridosilsesquioxanes

Abstract:Molecular design and architecture of four novel organic-inorganic network hybrids were implemented via hydrosilylative addition reaction of octahydridosilsesquioxanes (H-8-POSS) with dienes. The structural characterization by the FTIR, C-13 MAS NMR and Si-29 MAS NMR technologies, respectively, indicates that two monomers are chemically bound to each other to form three-dimensional network hybrids that possess well film-formability. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that no phase separation occurred in the hybrid films, implying that the POSS molecules are uniformly dispersed into the polymeric system at the nanoscale. All POSS-containing well-dispersed hybrid films exhibit a good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature higher than 350 degrees C, and enhanced mechanical properties of a hardness of 0.21-0.26 GPa and the elastic modulus of 7.67-8.85 GPa, and low dielectric properties with a dielectric constant of 2.43-2.78. Interestingly, these properties can be further tuned by adjusting the length and the structure of the linking chain between POSS cages.

Abstract:Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) are a class of well‐defined organic–inorganic stereo molecules comprising inorganic SiOSi cores and peripheral organic moieties. Since they were first reported in 1946 by Scott et al., there have been a great number of investigations on the use of POSS macromers as the building blocks to access the organic–inorganic composites with polymers. In most of cases, monofunctional POSS macromers are employed and the linear hybrid polymers are obtained. Under this circumstance, POSS cages act as the side or end groups whereas the main chains of the polymers remain unchanged. Occasionally, octafunctional POSS macromers are involved, resulting in the generation of crosslinked (or network‐like) hybrids. Recently, well‐defined difunctional POSS macromers have increasingly provoked a considerable attention of investigators. From the synthetic methodology of POSS macromers to the approaches to introduce them into polymers, difunctional POSS macromers have the features quite different from mono‐ (or octa‐) functional POSS. More importantly, the related organic–inorganic hybrids possess the different morphologies and properties. In the past years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of literatures on the studies on well‐defined difunctional POSS and the related organic–inorganic hybrids. Nonetheless, the related review is lacking. In this contribution, we would summarize the recent progress in this regard, from the synthesis of POSS macromers, the approaches of introducing the POSS macromers into polymers to the correlation of morphologies with properties of the organic–inorganic hybrids. In addition, perspectives and challenges for the further advancement are envisaged and discussed.

Abstract:Hybrids consisting of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) with a dumbbell topology and C-2 symmetry were designed and synthesized. They self-assemble into 5 nm ordered structures. In particular, the increased steric effect with increasing POSS units stabilizes a square columnar phase (Col(squ)) which is important in nanotemplating. These hybrids containing discotic liquid crystal HBC and POSS units have an excellent etching contrast and present an approach to obtain 5 nm nanopatterns.

Abstract:Epoxy/polyhedral oligometric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrid materials, containing 50 wt % POSS and exhibiting good homogeneity, were obtained in a two-step preparation. Monoamine-functionalized POSS was first reacted with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A to form an epoxy POSS precursor, which was then cured. Curing agents such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, dicyandiamide (DICY), and diethylphosphite (DEP) were used for the synthesis of the epoxy-POSS hybrid materials. The use of small-molecule curing agents, such as DICY and DEP, efficiently avoided macrophase separations and enhanced the thermal properties of the hybrid materials. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) are of considerable interest as building blocks for preparing low-k materials. To date T8 POSS has been extensively investigated while the potential of larger POSS cages remain an unexplored area. Herein, the first known contribution to map the role of POSS cage size on the dielectric and other comprehensive properties of hybrid materials with identical chemical compositions is described. First, three vinyl POSS (T8, T10, and T12) species are isolated from a commercial POSS mixture. Then, they are converted to benzocyclobutene functionalized and thermo-crosslinked hybrid materials. It is found that the cage size can strongly affect their k values, more importantly, showing a linear decrease while increasing the cage volumes (k = 2.24, 2.02, and 1.83 for c-T8B8, c-T10B10, and c-T12B12, respectively). This finding highlights a profound influence of POSS cage changes on dielectric properties and could be used to predict ultralow-k (1.5–1.1) materials by extrapolating to larger T14, T16, and T18 POSS cages. Meanwhile, varying the cage size has no obvious effect on the materials' other properties, and all of them exhibit good comprehensive properties. Moreover, such low-k values can persist at high temperature and high humidity conditions, which affords some promising (ultra)low-k dielectrics for modern integrated circuit development.
