Abstract:Rapid deterioration of heavy-duty asphalt pavements in recent years has attracted more and more attention on the conventional road technique. The paper describes field investigation and mechanistic analysis conducted to improve the pavement design methods. Six new types of distress are addressed here. The research indicates that the conventional pavement technique is only suitable for the ordinary pavement design, not the heavy-duty pavements. The dynamic hydraulic pressure under the moving vehicles' tires became an unneglectable factor causing initial failures on the freeways. The nonuniformly distributed load is another important factor which will cause local damage; the other important factor is the overload. According to the pavement structure behavior equation covering the whole life cycle, a new bitumen pavement design method based on performance was developed.
