Abstract:A new turbo-charging system, named AVIEIT (automatically variable intake exhaust injection timing), is proposed. Its main purpose is to improve the performance of low speed high torque operating conditions and improve the economy of high speed operating conditions for high-speed supercharged inter-cooled diesel engines. The principle of the AVIEIT turbo-charging system is presented. A control mechanism for the proposed AVIEIT system used for a truck diesel engine is introduced. An engine simulation code has been developed. In this code, zero-dimensional in-cylinder combustion model, one-dimensional FVM-TVD (finite volume method-total variation diminishing) model for unsteady gas flow in the intake and exhaust manifold, and turbocharger model are used. The developed code is used to simulate the performances of diesel engines using the AVIEIT system. Simulations of a military use diesel engine "12V150" and a truck diesel engine "D6114" using the AVIEIT system have been performed. Simulation results show that the in-cylinder charge air amount of the diesel engine with the AVIEIT system is increased at low speed high torque operating conditions, and the fuel economy is improved at high speed operating conditions. In order to test the idea of the AVIEIT system, an experiment on a truck diesel engine "D6114" equipped with an AVIEIT control mechanism has been finished. The experiment results show that the AVIEIT system can improve economy of high speed operating conditions. Both the simulation and experiment results suggest that the AVIEIT system has the potential to replace the Waste-Gate and VGT turbo-charging systems.

Abstract:The concept and the theory model of the virtual testing based on virtual reality are studied.In terms of the mapping relation between the vehicle vibration testing system and the virtual testing system of vehicle vibration based on virtual reality(VTSVVBVR),the system framework design and the implementation method of the VTSVVBVR,which consists of virtual reality subsystem,modeling subsystem and virtual instrument subsystem,are proposed.The VTSVVBVR is designed,and the display of the virtual testing results of the vehicle vibration is presented,which has shown that the theory model of the virtual testing based on virtual reality is suitable for the VTSVVBVR design,and the vehicle vibration and its signals of time domain and frequency domain could be observed simultaneously in three observation models respectively by the aid of the system.

Abstract:Variable valve timing (VVT) and Miller cycle are advanced technologies employed to optimize engine performance by improving airflow exchange, which are seldom investigated based on the direct-injection (DI) hydrogen engine. The objective of this study is to assess the effects of intake valve closing (IVC) and exhaust valve opening (EVO) timing on the gas exchange performance, combustion, and emissions of a DI hydrogen engine, after which a synergistic control strategy of IVC and EVO timing is proposed. This work is conducted under wide-open throttle and 1500 rpm. The results indicate that the synergistic control of IVC and EVO timing can increase volumetric efficiency by more than 40%, enhance gas exchange performance, shorten combustion duration, and reduce cyclic variation, resulting in approximately 43.15% brake thermal efficiency. Furthermore, brake mean effective pressure can be increased by more than 60% and NO emissions are controlled to less than 20 ppm by optimizing valve timings.

Abstract:The stability and disturbance rejection ability of the electro-hydraulic Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system make great influence on the performance of gasoline engine. The coupling effect between oil pressure and rotation speed of Variable Valve Timing System in Gasoline Engine is the main factor that affects VVT system's behavior in steady mode. This coupling effect greatly changes the operation conditions of VVT system in a short time when the rotation speed changes. Meanwhile, it is hard to calibrate since it's determined by the engine structure, temperature and aging effect. These difficulties can't be well solved by classical linear controller. Based on active disturbance rejection concept, the liner ADRC controller is proposed in this paper to observe the coupling effect as a disturbance and compensate it. The experiment results demonstrate that compared to classical PID algorithm, the liner ADRC controller shows much stronger disturbance rejection ability by observe and compensate the coupling effect in advance, thus bringing higher accuracy and stability to VVT system in steady mode.

Abstract:The V-mode process in the vehicle control system development was analyzed in this paper. By taking a pure electric vehicle as an example, in the module in-the-loop step, depending on the vehicle control strategy, how to develop the vehicle control system based on V-mode was proposed. Furthermore, one or more test cases were established for each vehicle model to analyze the test methods and test results. Through unit tests, the functions of the modules are proved.

Abstract:There have been several studies focused on improving the efficiency of internal combustion engines using various techniques such as better design, better materials, and regenerative technologies. Recently, in 2016, Toyota reported 40% gas engine efficiency with their Prius model; however, there remains a lot more room for improvement towards the theoretical maximum value of 73% using the Carnot theorem. In this research, we present a freshly designed valvetrain that has the potential to improve the efficiency of a known conventional valve designed engine. The goal of this research was to prove the feasibility and significance of the new valve design. This research developed a simulation model of the new valve design and produced its physical property data. The data of the new design were compared to the conventional poppet valve design with respect to several parameters to discuss its working principle and advantages over the conventional valve mechanism. Modeling was performed using Python programming to predict the valve-opening mechanism. The design of experiments was setup to control and tune different parameters accordingly within the reasonable range of engine speed, viz., 1000–6000 rpm to simulate various working conditions. The maximum opening area for the rotary valve is calculated to be 0.795 sq.in which is smaller than the poppet valve's area of 1.315 sq.in. However, under an example of 2900 rpm, the rotary valve was able to remain fully opened with constant efficiency of about 54% from 40 to 160 degrees of the crankshaft angle. While the poppet valve can achieve 88% efficiency at 90 degrees of the crankshaft angle and the efficiency significantly drops on either side of the maxima, the authors believe that this research would help explore improvements in the performance of a combustion cycle due to the novel rotary valve design that is investigated in this paper.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems that the traditional static var compensator(SVC)control system is complicated in structure,lack of agility,and highly dependent on hardware,the virtual instrument technology was applied to the SVC control system.The thyristor control reactor(TCR)mathematical model was analyzed and established.Based on LabWindows/CVI development platform and made use of interactive development technology and ANSI C programming language,the TCR control system was designed and realized,which was used for the 90 kvar/380 V TCR reactive power compensation device.Load current and voltage was sampled,and the reactive power for compensation was calculated by FFT algorithm.The corresponding thyristor conduction angle was calculated by industrial personal computer(IPC),and the corresponding trigger impulse was output to adjust TCR reactive power compensation quantity.The operation results indicate that TCR controller based on the virtual instrument technology can detect power grid parameters in real time,and accurately compensate for the reactive power in a period with high agility and reliability,which fully reflects the advantages of the virtual instrument technology.

Abstract:In order to define the stiffness of the two-mass valve train model which is the key parameter of the valve train system, the finite element calculation was carried out by using different methods of compartmentalizing component based on the creation of the 3D models of every component of the valve train of WD615. The stiffness values of various valve train systems were calculated by using the simulation method mentioned above. After the calibration of the test system, the simulation results were tested by using the technique of laser measurement. The simulation and test result showed the reasonability and accuracy of the FEM method and the measurement error was limited to 5%. It coule be concluded that there was a quadratic polynomial increase between the valve train stiffness and the quality of the valve while the natural frequency of valve system waved between 30 000 to 50 000 times/min based on the statistical results. This research could provide the theory basis of developing the new valve train system.

Abstract:This paper introduces a VGT control system which is equipped with a step motor as the actuator. In order to effectively control the nozzle area so as to improve engine performance in both steady and transient states, a control scheme is worked out by combining predictive function and the super charged pressure feedback method. In the testing the system, satisfactory results are obtained. This system is proved to be simple and practical.

Abstract:The mathematical model of direct-drive compressor valve in topology was conducted using varia-ble density method in order to improve discharge volume, efficiency and reliability of direct-drive compres-sor. The exhaust valve was optimized in topology. The structure parameter was ascertained based on topology results. The force of exhaust valve was analyzed. The vibration mode of direct-drive compressor valve was analyzed in ANSYS. Results show that the ON-OFF frequency is much less than inherence fre-quency and the valve can not resonate by mode simulation. The stress and the displacement distribution of direct-drive compressor valve were deduced. Stress and distortion trend accorded with the practice by stress and distortion simulation. The mathematical model of the process of valve was presented. The motion rule of valve was simulated. ON-OFF of valve is in gear, which show the rationality and efficiency of the method.
Experimental Study on Quality Control and Variable Valve Timing Strategy of Hydrogen Engine for High Efficiency and Low Emission at Low Load

Abstract:In order to reduce the pumping loss of low loads and maximize the lean combustion advantage of hydrogen, the paper proposes a load control strategy based on hydrogen mass, called quality control, for improving thermal efficiency and emissions at low loads. The advantages of quality control and the effect of VVT on the combustion performance of hydrogen internal combustion engines under low loads were discussed. The results show that when the relative air–fuel ratio (λ) increases to more than 2.5, the NOx emissions are reduced to less than 3.5 g/kW · h at the brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) below 8 bar, especially when the BMEP is less than 5 bar, the NOx is within 0.2 g/kW · h. Compared to quantity control based on air mass, the quality control strategy based on hydrogen mass achieves over a 2.0% reduction in pumping loss at BMEP levels lower than 4.4 bar. Furthermore, it enhances thermal efficiency by up to 5% at low loads, while maintaining NOx emissions within 0.2 g/kW · h at BMEP below 5.6 bar. BTE gradually increases with the delay of exhaust valve closing (EVC), decreases first and then increases with the delay of intake valve opening (IVO), and reaches a maximum in early IVO and late EVC areas. In throttle-free hydrogen engines with quality control, VVT technology can be fully utilized to assist stability control in low loads.

Abstract:Design of variable nozzle vane is the key for variable nozzle turbocharger (VNT) design. A VNT was constructed by assembling a variable nozzle into a conventional turbocharger with vaneless nozzle. The design methods and processes of the variable nozzle were presented in detail, which include thermodynamic design, structural and mechanical design, and CFD analysis. The CFD analysis showed that the aerodynamic performance of the variable nozzle was well accepted in different open positions. The engine-matching test showed that, the performance of the engine improved significantly with the VNT compared to the prototype turbocharger. The engine fuel consumption was reduced by 8.1g/Kw·h and the maximum torque increased by 250 N·m.

Abstract:In order to switch among multiple working modes of the concept hybrid engine,including air motor mode,supercharged combustion mode and regenerative braking mode,an electro-hydraulic variable valve system was designed and manufactured.Based on a newly designed prototype,the intake and exhaust valving strategies in different modes were analyzed.The on/off of hydraulic line was controlled with high speed electromagnetic valves.By using NI-CompactRIO platform,the control system hardware and software of valve prototype were designed and optimized.Finally,preliminary tests of the variable valve were conducted.The results indicate that,though there is some dynamic delay of valve lift,by regulating the opening and duration of electromagnetic valves,the optimal lift and timing strategy of the engine valve can be achieved for the air motor mode of the hybrid engine concept.
Optimization Match between IVCA and Turbocharged System at Middle Load in Diesel Engines

Abstract:A Weichai-WP12 heavy-duty diesel was taken as the research object and the influence on two-stage turbocharged system was researched, according to contrasting the two states of the IVCA which control mode was open or close. It was also analyzed that the effect on combustion process by key gas path parameters of diesel engines under each speed and middle load condition. The results show that the NOx and soot compromise exhaust emission was significantly declined by IVCA when the injection timing was delayed further after top dead center. At the same time, it was found that IVCA could decrease air intake flow and backpressure, and then it was considered as a useful way to improve the effective thermal efficiency when engines ran under high backpressure condition. The optimization matching process between boost system and IVCA under middle load working condition could come true if the influences of IVCA on operating principle of boost system were found , while the key air path parameters and fuel parameters was collaborated and controlled precisely.
