Abstract:In the field of knowledge representation, argumentation is usually considered as an abstract framework for non-classical logic. In this paper, however, we'd like to present a propositional argumentation framework, which can be used to closer simulate a real-world argumentation. We thereby argue that under a dialectical argumentation game, we can allow non-monotonic reasoning even under classical logic. We introduce two methods together for gaining non-monotonicity, one by giving plausibility for arguments, the other by adding "exceptions" which is similar to defaults. Furthermore, we will give out an alternative definition for propositional argumentation using argumentative models, which is highly related to the previous reasoning method, but with a simple algorithm for calculation.

Abstract:Autonomous agents are supposed to be able to finish tasks or achieve goals that are assigned by their users through performing a sequence of actions. Since there might exist multiple plans that an agent can follow and each plan might promote or demote different values along each action, the agent should be able to resolve the conflicts between them and evaluate which plan he should follow. In this paper, we develop a logic-based framework that combines modal logic and argumentation for value-based practical reasoning with plans. Modal logic is used as a technique to represent and verify whether a plan with its local properties of value promotion or demotion can be followed to achieve an agent's goal. We then propose an argumentation-based approach that allows an agent to reason about his plans in the form of supporting or objecting to a plan using the verification results.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the formalization of the axiom of choice and several of its famous equivalent theorems in Morse-Kelley set theory. These theorems include Tukey's lemma, the Hausdorff maximal principle, the maximal principle, Zermelo's postulate, Zorn's lemma and the well-ordering theorem. We prove the above theorems by the axiom of choice in turn, and finally prove the axiom of choice by Zermelo's postulate and the well-ordering theorem, thus completing the cyclic proof of equivalence between them. The proofs are checked formally using the Coq proof assistant in which Morse-Kelley set theory is formalized. The whole process of formal proof demonstrates that the Coq-based machine proving of mathematics theorem is highly reliable and rigorous. The formal work of this paper is enough for most applications, especially in set theory, topology and algebra.

Abstract:Rochet's Theorem characterizes implementable allocations in a mechanism design environment in terms of cyclic monotonicity, a concept from convex analysis. In this paper, I offer an alternative approach to both the proof and interpretation of this result, based on linear duality. This duality reveals a formal relationship between incentives and detection, much like that between prices and quantities. Moreover, it allows me to extend Rochet's Theorem and present a subdifferential characterization of implementing payments, revenue equivalence as differentiability of a value function, as well as budget-balanced implementation in terms of attributing innocence after unilateral deviations, together with other ancillary results.

Abstract:The Model Hypothesis (abbreviated $\mathsf{MH}$) and $\Delta$ are set-theoretic axioms introduced by J. Roitman in her work on the box product problem. Answering some questions of Roitman and Williams on these two principles, we show (1) $\mathsf{MH}$ implies the existence of $P$-points in $\omega^*$ and is therefore not a theorem of $\mathsf{ZFC}$; (2) $\mathsf{MH}$ also fails in the side-by-side Sacks models; (3) as $\Delta$ holds in these models, this implies $\Delta$ is strictly stronger than $\mathsf{MH}$; (4) furthermore, $\Delta$ holds in a large class of forcing extensions in which it was not previously known to hold.

Abstract:For most purposes, one can replace the use of Rolle's theorem and the mean value theorem, which are not constructively valid, by the law of bounded change. The proof of two basic results in numerical analysis, the error term for Lagrange interpolation and Simpson's rule, however seem to require the full strength of the classical Rolle's Theorem. The goal of this note is to justify these two results constructively, using ideas going back to Amp\`ere and Genocchi.

Abstract:First-order optimization methods have attracted a lot of attention due to their practical success in many applications, including in machine learning. Obtaining convergence guarantees and worst-case performance certificates for first-order methods have become crucial for understanding ingredients underlying efficient methods and for developing new ones. However, obtaining, verifying, and proving such guarantees is often a tedious task. Therefore, a few approaches were proposed for rendering this task more systematic, and even partially automated. In addition to helping researchers finding convergence proofs, these tools provide insights on the general structures of such proofs. We aim at presenting those structures, showing how to build convergence guarantees for first-order optimization methods.

Abstract:In this article we give strong versions for preparation theorems for $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable functions outgoing from methods of Lion and Rolin ($\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$ is the o-minimal structure generated by all restricted analytic functions and the global exponential function). By a deep model theoretic fact of Van den Dries, Macintyre and Marker every $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable function is piecewise given by $\mathcal{L}_{an}(\exp,\log)$-terms where $\mathcal{L}_{an}(\exp,\log)$ denotes the language of ordered rings augmented by all restricted analytic functions, the global exponential and the global logarithm. The idea is to consider log-analytic functions at first, i.e. functions which are iterated compositions from either side of globally subanalytic functions and the global logarithm, and then $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable functions as compositions of log-analytic functions and the global exponential.

Abstract:Richard Cox [1] set the axiomatic foundations of probable inference and the algebra of propositions. He showed that consistency within these axioms requires certain rules for updating belief. In this paper we use the analogy between probability and utility introduced in [2] to propose an axiomatic foundation for utility inference and the algebra of preferences. We show that consistency within these axioms requires certain rules for updating preference. We discuss a class of utility functions that stems from the axioms of utility inference and show that this class is the basic building block for any general multiattribute utility function. We use this class of utility functions together with the algebra of preferences to construct utility functions represented by logical operations on the attributes.

Abstract:Motivation is an indispensable element in reasoning rational behavior of intelligent agent. Recent study on the semantics explanation of motivation operator has its shortcomings such as the impossibility to solve logic omniscience problem. This shortcoming fundamentally restrict agent from applying to real application domain. This paper proposes three proposition semantics to describe motivation operator and proves that the novel motivation operator can avoid logic omniscience problem and related problems.

Abstract:In this paper, a logical model for reasoning about rational agent's three attitudes Belief, Capability and Promise, incorporating the temporal aspect, is proposed. Diverse axioms that can reflect different properties of the agents are presented in a precise way by appropriate conditions according to the accessibility relations of the models. The inter-relations among the operators are also explored to characterize the interactions and cooperations between the agents. An illustrative reasoning example in the trading agent competition for supply chain management(TAC SCM) is presented to show the potential applications of the model.
On Logical Analysis of Evaluating a Real Argument in Everyday Life

Abstract:Beginning in 1940’s, as a matter of fact, philosophers, such as Strawson, Austin, Searle, etc, focused on the pragmatic elements in assessing arguments. Toulmin (1958) presents a dialectical model called Toulmin Model different from classical model, which tries to describe the structure of argument as process. However, it is pity that their works had little on the formal semantics developed by Richard Montague and his followers until the rise of Informal Logic (in North America), Pragma-Dialectics (in Holland), and Radical Argumentativism (in France). This paper tries first to evaluate Formal Logical Model, Informal Logical Model and Pragma-dialectical Model of argumentation evaluation, and then construct a Defeasible Pragma-Dialectical Model by introducing Defeasible Modus Ponens rule in order to evaluate a real argument as process in everyday life.

Abstract:Abstract This paper extends earlier work by its authors on formal aspects of the processes of contracting a theory to eliminate a proposition and revising a theory to introduce a proposition. In the course of the earlier work, Gärdenfors developed general postulates of a more or less equational nature for such processes, whilst Alchourrón and Makinson studied the particular case of contraction functions that are maximal, in the sense of yielding a maximal subset of the theory (or alternatively, of one of its axiomatic bases), that fails to imply the proposition being eliminated. In the present paper, the authors study a broader class, including contraction functions that may be less than maximal. Specifically, they investigate “partial meet contraction functions”, which are defined to yield the intersection of some nonempty family of maximal subsets of the theory that fail to imply the proposition being eliminated. Basic properties of these functions are established: it is shown in particular that they satisfy the Gärdenfors postulates, and moreover that they are sufficiently general to provide a representation theorem for those postulates. Some special classes of partial meet contraction functions, notably those that are “relational” and “transitively relational”, are studied in detail, and their connections with certain “supplementary postulates” of Gàrdenfors investigated, with a further representation theorem established.

A simple proof of existence of Lagrange multipliers

Abstract:In the seminal book Méchanique analitique, Lagrange, 1788, the notion of a Lagrange multiplier was first introduced in order to study a smooth minimization problem subject to equality constraints. The idea is that, under some regularity assumption, at a solution of the problem, one may associate a new variable (Lagrange multiplier) to each constraint such that an equilibrium equation is satisfied. This concept turned out to be central in studying more general constrained optimization problems and it has lead to the rapid development of nonlinear programming as a field of mathematics since the works of Karush and Kuhn-Tucker, who considered equality and inequality constraints. The usual proofs for the existence of Lagrange multipliers are somewhat cumbersome, relying on the implicit function theorem or duality theory. In the first section of this note we present an elementary proof of existence of Lagrange multipliers in the simplest context, which is easily accessible to a wide variety of readers. In addition, this proof is readily extended to the much more general context of conic constraints, which we present in the second section together with the background properties needed on the projection onto a closed and convex cone.

Abstract:Evaluating construction requirements should be an indispensable part of improving the constructability of a facility project. However, a number of existing function analysis approaches focus mainly on the final functions with respect to the finished facility. The construction industry still lacks methodologies to represent and evaluate the functional construction requirements for constructability analysis. This paper develops the concept of intermediate functions for representing the construction requirements from three perspectives, namely, function user, function provider, and the temporal and spatial relationships between the user and the provider. This is followed by the development of an in-progress product model to abstract the construction lifecycle of a facility product utilizing the concept of component state. Furthermore, the reference relationships among such perspectives as in-progress product, intermediate function, resource, and process are addressed. Based on these reference relationships, the bottleneck states for providing the intermediate functions can be detected. A case study of constructing the deck of a bridge using the balanced cantilever approach is presented to illustrate the utilization of this concept and representation.
The Logic and Model of Logrolling in Public Choice Theory

Abstract:The methodological foundation of logrolling model in public choice theory is the individualism hypothesis. There are fundamental differences between the individualism as a methodology and the individualism as a norm for organizing social activities. There are several necessary factors in the logic of proving logrolling: first, it must contains majority vote rule; second, collective choice must be identified with continuity hypothesis, this is, collective choice is a stream of independent strategic decision-making; third, the preferences of minority are much stronger than that of majority, which implies the differences of preference strength. According to this logic, it is possible to design a simple logrolling model which is schemed by building roads. The basic conclusions of this model are: the rational activities of every individual will lead to the collective irrational activities; the collective expenditure will exceed reasonable level, and its root cause is the use of majority rule and its resulting logrolling. Through the generalization and its expanding use, the simple logrolling model can be used to many actual situations of collective strategic decision-making.
