Abstract:Several recent papers construct auxiliary polynomials to bound the Weil height of certain classes of algebraic numbers from below. Following these techniques, the author gave a general method for introducing auxiliary polynomials to problems involving the Weil height. The height appears as a solution to a certain extremal problem involving polynomials. We further generalize the above techniques to acquire both the projective height and the height on subspaces in the same way. We further obtain lower bounds on the heights of points on some subvarieties of $\mathbb P^{N-1}(\overline{\mathbb Q})$.

Abstract:Is it possible to distinguish algebraic from transcendental real numbers by considering the $b$-ary expansion in some base $b\ge2$? In 1950, É. Borel suggested that the answer is no and that for any real irrational algebraic number $x$ and for any base $g\ge2$, the $g$-ary expansion of $x$ should satisfy some of the laws that are shared by almost all numbers. There is no explicitly known example of a triple $(g,a,x)$, where $g\ge3$ is an integer, $a$ a digit in $\{0,...,g-1\}$ and $x$ a real irrational algebraic number, for which one can claim that the digit $a$ occurs infinitely often in the $g$-ary expansion of $x$. However, some progress has been made recently, thanks mainly to clever use of Schmidt's subspace theorem. We review some of these results.

On two recent extensions of the Big Five of Reverse Mathematics

Abstract:The program Reverse Mathematics in the foundations of mathematics seeks to identify the minimal axioms required to prove theorems of ordinary mathematics. One always assumes the base theory, a logical system embodying computable mathematics. As it turns out, many (most?) theorems are either provable in said base theory, or equivalent to one of four logical systems, collectively called the Big Five. This paper provides an overview of two recent extensions of the Big Five, working in Kohlenbach's higher-order framework. On one hand, we obtain a large number of equivalences between the second-order Big Five and third-order theorems of real analysis dealing with possibly discontinuous functions. On the other hand, we identify four new 'Big' systems, i.e. boasting many equivalences over the base theory, namely the uncountability of the reals, the Jordan decomposition theorem, the Baire category theorem, and Tao's pigeon hole principle for the Lebesgue measure. We discuss a connection to hyperarithmetical analysis, completing the picture.

Abstract:Conway's real closed field $\mathbf{No}$ of surreal numbers is a sweeping generalization of the real numbers and the ordinals to which a number of elementary functions such as log and exponentiation have been shown to extend. The problems of identifying significant classes of functions that can be so extended and of defining integration for them have proven to be formidable. In this paper we address this and related unresolved issues by showing that extensions to $\mathbf{No}$, and thereby integrals, exist for most functions arising in practical applications. In particular, we show they exist for a large subclass of the \emph{resurgent functions}, a subclass that contains the functions that at $\infty$ are semi-algebraic, semi-analytic, analytic, meromorphic, and Borel summable as well as solutions to nonresonant linear and nonlinear meromorphic systems of ODEs or of difference equations. By suitable changes of variables we deal with arbitrarily located singular points. We further establish a sufficient condition for the theory to carry over to ordered exponential subfields of $\mathbf{No}$ more generally and illustrate the result with structures familiar from the surreal literature. The extensions of functions and integrals that concern us are constructive in nature, which permits us to work in NBG less the Axiom of Choice (for both sets and proper classes). Following the completion of the positive portion of the paper, it is shown that the existence of such constructive extensions and integrals of substantially more general types of functions (e.g. smooth functions) is obstructed by considerations from the foundations of mathematics.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:In this note, we study the arithmetic nature of values of modular functions, meromorphic modular forms and meromorphic quasi-modular forms with respect to arbitrary congruence subgroups, that have algebraic Fourier coefficients. This approach unifies many of the known results, and leads to generalizations of the theorems of Schneider, Nesterenko and others.

Abstract:Actually in the study of transcendence of formal power series arising from the Carlitz module, there are four quite powerful tools: Drinfeld modules, Wade's method, Diophantine approximation, and finite automata. An interesting question put forward by J.-P. Allouche concerns the concrete relationship between all of them. In this work, we shall show, by Wade's method, that a value of the Carlitz-Goss gamma function is transcendental if and only if the argument is not a natural number. We remark that this result was proved originally by M. Mendes France and the author with the help of automata theory. Now it remains to know whether it is possible to prove the above result respectively by Drinfeld modules and by Diophantine approximation, a question still open for the moment.
Functional Transcendence of Periods and the Geometric André--Grothendieck Period Conjecture

Abstract:We prove a functional transcendence theorem for the integrals of algebraic forms in families of algebraic varieties. This allows us to prove a geometric version of André's generalization of the Grothendieck period conjecture, which we state using the formalism of Nori motives. More precisely, we prove a version of the Ax--Schanuel conjecture for the comparison between the flat and algebraic coordinates of an arbitrary admissible graded polarizable variation of integral mixed Hodge structures. This can be seen as a generalization of the recent Ax--Schanuel theorems of \cite{chiu,GaoKlingler} for mixed period maps.

Abstract:Higher transcendental function occur frequently in the calculation of Feynman integrals in quantum field theory. Their expansion in a small parameter is a non-trivial task. We report on a computer program which allows the systematic expansion of certain classes of functions. The algorithms are based on the Hopf algebra of nested sums. The program is written in C++ and uses the GiNaC library.

Abstract:We present closed forms for several functions that are fundamental in number theory and we explain the method used to obtain them. Concretely, we find formulas for the p-adic valuation, the number-of-divisors function, the sum-of-divisors function, Euler's totient function, the modular inverse, the integer part of the root, the integer part of the logarithm, the multiplicative order and the discrete logarithm. Although these are very complicated, they only involve elementary operations, and to our knowledge no other closed form of this kind is known for the aforementioned functions.

Abstract:Often referred to as special functions or mathematical functions, the origin of many members of the remarkably vast family of higher transcendental functions can be traced back to such widespread areas as (for example) mathematical physics, analytic number theory and applied mathematical sciences. Here, in this survey-cum-expository review article, we aim at presenting a brief introductory overview and survey of some of the recent developments in the theory of several extensively studied higher transcendental functions and their potential applications. For further reading and researching by those who are interested in pursuing this subject, we have chosen to provide references to various useful monographs and textbooks on the theory and applications of higher transcendental functions. Some operators of fractional calculus, which are associated with higher transcendental functions, together with their applications, have also been considered. Many of the higher transcendental functions, especially those of the hypergeometric type, which we have investigated in this survey-cum-expository review article, are known to display a kind of symmetry in the sense that they remain invariant when the order of the numerator parameters or when the order of the denominator parameters is arbitrarily changed.
Graded transcendental functions: an application to four-point amplitudes with one off-shell leg

Abstract:We describe a general method for constructing a minimal basis of transcendental functions tailored to a scattering amplitude. Starting with formal solutions for all master integral topologies, we grade the appearing functions by properties such as their symbol alphabet or letter adjacency. We rotate the basis such that functions with spurious features appear in the least possible number of basis elements. Since their coefficients must vanish for physical quantities, this approach avoids complex cancellations. As a first application, we evaluate all integral topologies relevant to the three-loop $Hggg$ and $Hgq\bar{q}$ amplitudes in the leading-colour approximation and heavy-top limit. We describe the derivation of canonical differential equation systems and present a method for fixing boundary conditions without the need for a full functional representation. Using multiple numerical reductions, we test the maximal transcendentality conjecture for $Hggg$ and identify a new letter which appears in functions of weight 4 and 5. In addition, we provide the first direct analytic computation of a three-point form factor of the operator $\mathrm{Tr}(\phi^2)$ in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM and find agreement with numerical and bootstrapped results.

Abstract:Existing computer programs called proof assistants can verify the correctness of mathematical proofs but their specialized proof languages present a barrier to entry for many mathematicians. Large language models have the potential to lower this barrier, enabling mathematicians to interact with proof assistants in a more familiar vernacular. Among other advantages, this may allow mathematicians to explore radically new kinds of mathematics using an LLM-powered proof assistant to train their intuitions as well as ensure their arguments are correct. Existing proof assistants have already played this role for fields such as homotopy type theory.

Abstract:In 1902, Paul Stäckel constructed an analytic function $f(z)$ in a neighborhood of the origin, which was transcendental, and with the property that both $f(z)$ and its inverse, as well as its derivatives, assumed algebraic values at all algebraic points in this neighborhood. Inspired by this result, Mahler in 1976 questioned the existence of an transcendental entire function $f(z)$ such that $f(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ and $f^{-1}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ are subsets of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}.$ This problem was solved by Marques and Moreira in 2017. As Stäcklel's result involved derivatives, it is natural to question whether we have an analogous result for transcendental entire functions involving derivatives. In this article, we show that there are an uncountable amount of such functions.

Abstract:It is well known that the low energy expansion of tree-level superstring scattering amplitudes satisfies a suitably defined version of uniform transcendentality. In this paper it is argued that there is a natural extension of this definition that applies to the genus-one four-graviton Type II superstring amplitude to all orders in the low-energy expansion. To obtain this result, the integral over the genus-one moduli space is partitioned into a region $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ R surrounding the cusp and its complement $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ L , and an exact expression is obtained for the contribution to the amplitude from $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ R . The low-energy expansion of the $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ R contribution is proven to be free of irreducible multiple zeta-values to all orders. The contribution to the amplitude from $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ L is computed in terms of modular graph functions up to order D 12 $ \mathrm{\mathcal{R}} $ 4 in the low-energy expansion, and general arguments are used beyond this order to conjecture the transcendentality properties of the $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ L contributions. Uniform transcendentality of the full amplitude holds provided we assign a non-zero weight to certain harmonic sum functions, an assumption which is familiar from transcendentality assignments in quantum field theory amplitudes.

Abstract:Theorems crucial in elementary real function theory have proofs in which compactness arguments are used. Despite the introduction in relatively recent literature of each new highly elegant compactness argument, or of an equivalent, this work is based on the idea that, with the aid of local properties of continuous or of differentiable functions, the use of supremum arguments suffices, and the resulting development of real function theory need not involve notions more sophisticated than what immediately follows from the usual ordering of the real numbers.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Abstract:We prove some new instances of a conjecture of Bachoc, Couvreur and Zémor that generalizes Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem to a multiplicative version in a function field setting. As a consequence we find that if $F$ is a rational function field over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $S \subset F$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space such that $\dim S^2 = 2\dim S + 1$, then the conjecture holds.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic study of the prehistory of the traditional subsystems of second-order arithmetic that feature prominently in the reverse mathematics program of Friedman and Simpson. We look in particular at: (i) the long arc from Poincaré to Feferman as concerns arithmetic definability and provability, (ii) the interplay between finitism and the formalization of analysis in the lecture notes and publications of Hilbert and Bernays, (iii) the uncertainty as to the constructive status of principles equivalent to Weak König's Lemma, and (iv) the large-scale intellectual backdrop to arithmetical transfinite recursion in descriptive set theory and its effectivization by Borel, Lusin, Addison, and others.

Abstract:In this paper, among other things, we prove that any subset of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}^m$ (closed under complex conjugation and which contains the origin) is the exceptional set of uncountable many transcendental entire functions over $\mathbb{C}^m$ with rational coefficients. This result solves a several variables version of a question posed by Mahler for transcendental entire functions.
