Abstract:Graphene nanosheets arranged perpendicularly to the substrate surface, i.e., vertically-oriented graphenes (VGs), have many unique morphological and structural features that can lead to exciting properties. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition enables the growth of VGs on various substrates using gas, liquid, or solid precursors. Compared with conventional randomly-oriented graphenes, VGs' vertical orientation on the substrate, non-agglomerated morphology, controlled inter-sheet connectivity, as well as sharp and exposed edges make them very promising for a variety of applications. The focus of this tutorial review is on plasma-enabled simple yet efficient synthesis of VGs and their properties that lead to emerging energy and environmental applications, ranging from energy storage, energy conversion, sensing, to green corona discharges for pollution control.

Abstract:Vertical graphene (VG) nanosheets have garnered significant attention in the field of electrochemical energy applications, such as supercapacitors, electro-catalysis, and metal-ion batteries. The distinctive structures of VG, including vertically oriented morphology, exposed, and extended edges, and separated few-layer graphene nanosheets, have endowed VG with superior electrode reaction kinetics and mass/electron transportation compared to other graphene-based nanostructures. Therefore, gaining insight into the structure-activity relationship of VG and VG-based materials is crucial for enhancing device performance and expanding their applications in the energy field. In this review, the authors first summarize the fabrication methods of VG structures, including solution-based, and vacuum-based techniques. The study then focuses on structural modulations through plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to tailor defects and morphology, aiming to obtain desirable architectures. Additionally, a comprehensive overview of the applications of VG and VG-based hybrids d in the energy field is provided, considering the arrangement and optimization of their structures. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of VG-based energy-related applications are discussed.

Abstract:Vertical graphene (VG) is a thin-film complex material featuring hierarchical microstructures: graphene-containing carbon nanosheets growing vertically on its deposition substrate, few-layer graphene basal layers, and chemically active atomistic defect sites and edges. Thanks to the fundamental characteristics of graphene materials, e.g. excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, chemical stability, and large specific surface area, VG materials have been successfully implemented into various niche applications which are strongly associated with their unique morphology. The microstructure of VG materials can be tuned by modifying growth methods and the parameters of growth processes. Multiple growth processes have been developed to address faster, safer, and mass production methods of VG materials, as well as accommodating various applications. VG's successful applications include field emission, supercapacitors, fuel cells, batteries, gas sensors, biochemical sensors, electrochemical analysis, strain sensors, wearable electronics, photo trapping, terahertz emission, etc. Research topics on VG have been more diversified in recent years, indicating extensive attention from the research community and great commercial value. In this review article, VG's morphology is briefly reviewed, and then various growth processes are discussed from the perspective of plasma science. After that, the most recent progress in its applications and related sciences and technologies are discussed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Vertically oriented graphene (VG) nanosheets have attracted growing interest for a wide range of applications, from energy storage, catalysis and field emission to gas sensing, due to their unique orientation, exposed sharp edges, non-stacking morphology, and huge surface-to-volume ratio. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) has emerged as a key method for VG synthesis; however, controllable growth of VG with desirable characteristics for specific applications remains a challenge. This paper attempts to summarize the state-of-the-art research on PECVD growth of VG nanosheets to provide guidelines on the design of plasma sources and operation parameters, and to offer a perspective on outstanding challenges that need to be overcome to enable commercial applications of VG. The review starts with an overview of various types of existing PECVD processes for VG growth, and then moves on to research on the influences of feedstock gas, temperature, and pressure on VG growth, substrate pretreatment, the growth of VG patterns on planar substrates, and VG growth on cylindrical and carbon nanotube (CNT) substrates. The review ends with a discussion on challenges and future directions for PECVD growth of VG.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent advances in synthesizing vertically oriented graphene films on various functional insulating templates through plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor decomposition, concentrating on improving materials properties, including conductivity, transparency, and adhesion, and modulating the growth orientations from vertical to lateral directions. Their wide‐range applications in photothermal devices, smart windows, transparent heating devices, neutral density filters, and thermal management are also discussed. Graphene has inspired wide‐range research interests and practical applications due to its intriguing materials properties and versatile application prospects. Specifically, vertically oriented graphene (VG) constructed by vertically aligned nanosheets emerges as a unique material type, usually achieved through a plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) route. The VG films possess abundant exposed active edges, large surface areas, relatively high electrical conductivity, and excellent thermal property in both in‐plane and out‐of‐plane directions. Direct synthesizing of such VG films on various functional substrates enables their transfer‐free integrations and direct applications in thermal management, sensing, energy storage and conversion, etc. In this review article, it is planned to showcase the recent advances in direct PECVD growth of VG films on some novel functional insulating substrates (e.g., glass, functional ceramics), mainly in terms of improving the electrical conductivity, enhancing the interfacial adhesion, and graphene growth orientation modulation. Meanwhile, the applications of the PECVD‐derived products in various new fields will also be discussed, such as photothermal conversion, switchable windows, light attenuation in photography, transparent heating, and thermal management for high‐power devices. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities will also be presented regarding controllable syntheses of high‐quality VG films and practical application explorations in different fields.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY) is regarded as an exceptional candidate to meet the growing demand in many fields due to its rich chemical bonds, highly π‐conjugated structure, uniformly distributed pores, large surface area, and high inhomogeneity of charge distribution. The extensive research efforts bring about a rapid expansion of GDY with a variety of functionalities, which significantly enhance performance including photocatalysis, energy, biomedicine, etc. In this review, the synthetic strategies (in situ and ex situ approaches) that are designed to rationally functionalize GDY, including optimizing their nanostructures by surface/interface engineering with dopants or functional groups (heteroatoms/small molecules/macromolecules), and building up hierarchical GDY‐based heterostructures are highlighted. Theoretical calculations on the structural evolution and electronic characteristics after the functionalization of GDY are briefly discussed. With elaborate functionalization and rational structure engineering, functional GDY applied in a variety of emerging applications (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, energy storage and conversion, nanophotonics, sensors, biomedical applications, etc.) are comprehensively discussed. Finally, challenges and prospects concerning the future development of GDY‐based nanoarchitectures are also presented.

Abstract:Graphene, composed of single-layered sp(2) graphite, with its superb physical and chemical properties, has attracted scientists in different areas, including electronics, medicine, and chemicals. Its applications in green energy were extensively studied in the past two decades. Results from different studies show that graphene-based products with different structures (2D and 3D graphene) can effectively enhance green energy conversion and storage compared to traditional energy materials like metal and metal oxides. This review focuses on the historical development of graphene, the variation of graphene products, and mainstream researches in graphene-based green energy applications carried out in recent years, such as fuel cell, solar cell, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), supercapacitor, dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), and photoelectrochemical water-splitting cell. The development of graphene-based materials integrated with different 3D printing technology and the application of their products in green energy are also discussed together with a forecast on the development of graphene-based materials in the future.

Abstract:In recent years, vertical graphene nanowalls (VGNWs) have gained significant attention due to their exceptional properties, including their high specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, scalability, and compatibility with transition metal compounds. These attributes position VGNWs as a compelling choice for various applications, such as energy storage, catalysis, and sensing, driving interest in their integration into next-generation commercial graphene-based devices. Among the diverse graphene synthesis methods, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) stands out for its ability to create large-scale graphene films and VGNWs on diverse substrates. However, despite progress in optimizing the growth conditions to achieve micrometer-sized graphene nanowalls, a comprehensive understanding of the underlying physicochemical mechanisms that govern nanostructure formation remains elusive. Specifically, a deeper exploration of nanometric-level phenomena like nucleation, carbon precursor adsorption, and adatom surface diffusion is crucial for gaining precise control over the growth process. Hydrogen’s dual role as a co-catalyst and etchant in VGNW growth requires further investigation. This review aims to fill the knowledge gaps by investigating VGNW nucleation and growth using PECVD, with a focus on the impact of the temperature on the growth ratio and nucleation density across a broad temperature range. By providing insights into the PECVD process, this review aims to optimize the growth conditions for tailoring VGNW properties, facilitating applications in the fields of energy storage, catalysis, and sensing.

Plasma-Electric Field Controlled Growth of Oriented Graphene for Energy Storage Applications

Abstract:Graphene is well known to grow as flat sheets aligned with the growth substrate. Oriented graphene structures typically normal to the substrate have recently gained major attention. Most often, normal orientation is achieved in plasma-assisted growth and is believed to be due to plasma induced in-built electric field, which is usually oriented normal to the substrate. This work focuses on the effect of in-built electric field on growth direction, morphology, interconnectedness, and physical properties of various configurations of graphene structures and reveals the unique dependence of these features on electric field orientation. It is shown that tilting of growth substrates from parallel to normal direction with respect to the direction of inbuilt plasma electric field leads to the morphological transitions from flat graphene structure, to oriented individual graphene sheets and then interconnected three-dimensional networks of oriented graphene sheets. The revealed transition of the growth orientation leads to change in wetting nature, types of defect in graphitic structures as well as affects their charge storage capacity when used as supercapacitor electrodes. This simple and versatile approach opens new opportunities for the production of potentially large batches of differently oriented and structured graphene sheets in one production run.

Abstract:With superior electrical/thermal conductivities and mechanical properties, two dimensional (2D) graphene has become one of the most intensively explored carbon allotropes in materials science. To exploit the inherent properties fully, 2D graphene sheets are often fabricated or assembled into functional architectures (e.g. hydrogels, aerogels) with desired three dimensional (3D) interconnected porous microstructures. The 3D graphene based materials show many excellent characteristics including increased active material per projected area, accessible mass transport or storage, electro/thermo conductivity, chemical/electrochemical stability and flexibility. It has paved the way for practical requirements in electronics, adsorption as well as catalysis related system. This review shows an extensive overview of the main principles and the recent synthetic technologies about fabricating various innovative 3D graphene based materials. Subsequently, recent progresses in electrochemical energy devices (lithium/lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and solar cells) and hydrogen energy generation/storage are explicitly discussed. The up to date advances for pollutants detection and environmental remediation are also reviewed. Finally, challenges and outlooks in materials development for energy and environment are suggested.

Abstract:Graphene, as the fundamental 2D carbon structure with exceptionally high crystal and electronic quality, has emerged as a rapidly rising star in the field of material science. Its sudden discovery in 2004 led to an explosion of interest in the study of graphene with respect to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, opening up a new research area for materials science and condensed-matter physics, and aiming for wide-ranging and diversified technological applications. In this critical review, we will describe recent advances in the development of graphene-based materials from the standpoint of electrochemistry. To begin with, electron transfer properties of graphene will be discussed, involving its unusual electronic structure, extraordinary electronic properties and fascinating electron transport. The next major section deals with the exciting progress related to graphene-based materials in electrochemistry since 2004, including electrochemical sensing, electrochemiluminescence, electrocatalysis, electrochemical energy conversion and FET devices. Finally, prospects and further developments in this exciting field of graphene-based materials are also suggested (224 references).

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene materials, which are integrated using graphene structural units, show great promise for energy-related applications because of the high specific surface area, fast electron transport, and low density. Beyond solution-phase assembly of graphene sheets, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) has been recently introduced as a scalable, high-yield, and facile strategy for preparing 3D graphene materials with relatively high crystallinity and controllable layer numbers. Such 3D graphene structures have served as ideal platforms for constructing next-generation energy storage and conversion devices such as supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells. In this tutorial review, we focus on recent progress in the scalable CVD growth of 3D graphene materials (e.g., foams, shells, and hierarchical structures) as well as their applications in energy-related fields. First, we emphasize the role of substrate shape and composition (metal or non-metal) in the CVD growth of diverse 3D graphene materials. The related growth mechanisms of these 3D graphene materials are also analysed and discussed. Second, we demonstrate the applications of the CVD-derived 3D graphene materials in various energy-related devices. Finally, we conclude this review with our insights into the challenges and future opportunities for CVD synthesis as well as the application of such intriguing 3D graphene materials.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials have shown great potential in various fields across physics, chemistry, biology, and electronics, due to their unique electronic properties, facile synthesis, and ease of functionalization. In this review, we summarize the significant advances in tailored graphene systems for the recently developed unconventional energy conversion and storage devices reported by our group and others, namely focused on their tunable and controllable preparation and remarkable applications in new types of supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, photovoltaic cells, and other emerging generators. This featured article also highlights the working principles and outlines the problems hindering the practical applications of graphene-based materials in these energy-related devices. Future research trends towards new methodologies in the design and synthesis of graphene-based systems with unique properties for emerging energy storage and energy conversion devices are also proposed.

Abstract:Graphene,a one-atom-thick and two-dimensional(2D) planar sheet of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice,has been a subject of extensive academic and commercial interest for potential use as the active materials in the fields of materials science,chemistry,physics and engineering due to its outstanding electronic,photonic,thermal and mechanical properties.It can be wrapped up into 0D fullerenes,rolled into 1D nanotubes or stacked into 3D graphite.In this paper the important aspects of graphenes,including preparation methods,chemical modification and potential applications,have been highlighted in detail.Basically graphenes can be prepared by micromechanical exfoliation,epitaxial growth on electrically insulating surfaces such as SiC,chemical vapor deposition,chemical synthesis and the creation of colloidal suspensions.By covalent or,non-covalent modification of graphenes,a large number of the intersting and promising functional materials have been prepared.Many challenges still remain.Future work should be focused on in-depth studies of graphene chemistry and materials science to provide a detailed understanding of the factors affecting the materials performance.

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed a rapid expansion in investigations of two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental materials (Xenes), which are promising materials in various fields, including applications in optoelectronic devices, biomedicine, catalysis, and energy storage. Apart from graphene and phosphorene, recently emerging 2D Xenes, specifically graphdiyne, borophene, arsenene, antimonene, bismuthene, and tellurene, have attracted considerable interest due to their unique optical, electrical, and catalytic properties, endowing them a broader range of intriguing applications. In this review, the structures and properties of these emerging Xenes are summarized based on theoretical and experimental results. The synthetic approaches for their fabrication, mainly bottom-up and top-down, are presented. Surface modification strategies are also shown. The wide applications of these emerging Xenes in nonlinear optical devices, optoelectronics, catalysis, biomedicine, and energy application are further discussed. Finally, this review concludes with an assessment of the current status, a description of existing scientific and application challenges, and a discussion of possible directions to advance this fertile field.
