Abstract:In the past decades, solar water collectors were installed for the main purpose of preheating domestic hot water or to cover a fraction of the space heating demand in China. However, solar cooling systems were constructed just for demonstration purposes. Since the building of the first solar-powered absorption cooling system in Shenzhen in 1987, there have been over 10 additional solar cooling demonstration projects constructed. In this paper, the most representative five projects including both absorption and adsorption cooling systems are introduced and summarized. From the demonstrations, solar absorption cooling systems have been shown to be more suitable for large building air-conditioning systems. Comparatively, solar adsorption cooling systems are more promising for small size air-conditioning systems. In order to attain high utilization ratio, it is highly recommended to design solar-powered integrated energy systems in public buildings. In addition, highly efficient heat pumps are considered as the most appropriate auxiliary heat sources for solar cooling systems, for the purpose of all-weather operation. In the 11th Five year research project (duration 2006–2010), solar cooling technologies will be further investigated to achieve a breaking through in the integration of solar cooling systems with buildings.

Abstract:Solar energy is receiving much more attention in building energy systems in recent years. Solar thermal utilization should be based on integration of solar collectors into buildings. The facades of buildings can be important solar collectors, and, therefore, become multifunctional. In addition, solar collectors can be used to enhance the appearance of the facade when considering their aesthetic compatibility. Currently, installation of collectors on the south tilted roofs, south walls, balconies or awnings of buildings are the feasible approaches for integration of solar collectors into buildings. The most well known solar energy demonstration projects in China are introduced in this paper, which cover different integrated approaches, and solar heating and cooling systems. In China's cities, the process of rebuilding apartment roofs from flat to inclined offers the ideal opportunity to carry out solar renovation in combination with roof-integrated collectors. It can be seen from the demonstration projects over the last twenty years, that, solar cooling systems were mainly used in public buildings for either absorption or adsorption. Besides, nearly all solar cooling systems are multifunctional. They have been used to supply heating and hot water in other seasons for the purpose of high solar fraction. In the 11th Five-year research project (duration 2006–2010), the government has encouraged solar energy researchers to study, develop, and break through the key technologies involved in the integration of solar thermal technologies with buildings.
Solar Air Conditioning by the Match of Solar Collector and Sorption Systems

Abstract:Building integrated solar systems have been considered as a reasonable system for building heating, cooling and hot water supply. Various types of solar collectors integrated with different sorption systems have been well studied and demonstrated. Based upon the demonstration studies, the feasible coupled solar collector and sorption system have been recommended. Typical examples are current solar water heating systems match with silica gel-water adsorption chiller, somehow possible to match with single effect LiBr-water absorption chiller. Solar air collector is good to match with desiccant cooling systems. But the most acceptable coupling would be the high efficiency medium temperature solar collector coupled with double effect absorption chiller.

Abstract:Solar driven air conditioning systems can cope with solar collectors working in a wide range of temperatures. Sorption systems, including absorption and adsorption refrigeration systems, are among the best choices for solar cooling. Five systems including modular silica gel-water adsorption chiller, single/double effect LiBr-water absorption chiller, 1.n effect LiBr-water absorption chiller, CaCl2/AC (activated carbon)-ammonia adsorption refrigerator, and the water-ammonia absorption ice maker with better internal heat recovery were presented. The above five sorption chillers/refrigerators work under various driven temperatures and fulfill different refrigeration demands. The thermodynamic design and system development of the systems were shown. All these systems have improvements in comparison with existing systems and may offer good options for high efficient solar cooling in the near future. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights eserved.

Abstract:One two-phase thermo-syphon silica gel-water solar adsorption chiller and LiBr-H2O absorption chiller with new medium CPC (Compound Parabolic Concentrator) solar collectors were investigated. The reliability of adsorption chiller can be improved, because there is only one vacuum valve in this innovative design. Medium temperature evacuated-tube CPC solar collectors were firstly utilized in the LiBr-H2O air conditioning system. The former system was applied in north of China at Latitude 37.45° (Dezhou city, China), the latter system was applied at Latitude 36.65° (Jinan city, China). Experimental results showed that the adsorption chiller can be powered by 55 °C of hot water. The adsorption chiller can provide 15 °C of chilled water from 9:30 to 17:00, the average solar COP (COPs) of the system is 0.16. In the absorption cooling system, the efficiency of the medium temperature evacuated-tube CPC solar collector can reach 0.5 when the hot water temperature is 125 °C. The absorption chiller can provide 15 °C of chilled water from 11:00 to 15:30, and the average solar COPs of absorption system is 0.19.

Abstract:Building integrated solar systems have been considered as a reasonable system for building heating, cooling and hot water supply. Various types of solar collectors, such as plate type, evacuated tube type and solar air collector, have been used as the heat source, whereas adsorption chillers, absorption chillers and desiccant dehumidification systems have been considered to match the above solar heat sources. Now, such sorption chillers are more matured, but their coupling with suitable solar heat source is not well researched. Abstract:This paper presents the experimental results of a solar photovoltaic air conditioner system to study the heating and cooling performance of system in the hot summer and cold winter zone like Shanghai, China. Four working modes have been investigated: cooling in summer and heating in winter, both for daytime and nighttime. The design of the system is described. Results are reported in terms of COPsolar based on solar radiation, Solar Fraction (SF) and Solar Direct Consumption Ratio (SDCR) respectively. It is found that the COPsolar for cooling of present system was around 0.32, which is higher than solar thermal driven cooling machine, while the heating COPsolar for heating was around 0.37, which is lower than the thermal efficiency of conventional solar thermal collector. The energy flow chart has been drawn based on measured results of typical weather condition in Shanghai. The energy losses in different devices of the system have been evaluated. This work has demonstrated that consistent and reliable air conditioning can be achieved by present system in winter as well as in summer and thereby can be used as a good solution to reduce the peak load of electrical grid in the hot summer and cold winter zone of China or the area with similar weather conditions around the world. A Review for Research and New Design Options of Solar Absorption Cooling Systems

Abstract:Solar cooling technology is environmentally friendly and contributes to a significant decrease of the CO2 emissions which cause the green house effect. Currently, most of the solar cooling systems commonly used are the hot water driven lithium bromide absorption chillers. According to the operating temperature range of driving thermal source, single-effect LiBr/H2O absorption chillers have the advantage of being powered by ordinary flat-plate or evacuated tubular solar collectors available in the market. In this paper, besides the review of the existing theoretical and experimental investigations of solar single-effect absorption cooling systems, some new design options with regard to solar collectors, auxiliary energy systems and cooling modes were introduced. And then, other main types of solar absorption cooling systems based on double-effect, half-effect and two-stage absorption chillers were summarized. For buildings with high amounts of cooling load and limited installation area, solar-powered double-effect absorption cooling systems may be considered on condition that the direct irradiation is high enough. Half-effect absorption chillers and two-stage absorption chillers seem to be more suitable for air-cooled solar absorption cooling systems in hot and dry regions which are short of water. It is highly recommended to study the standardised design guidelines according to different areas for the purpose of widespread applications of solar cooling systems.

Abstract:Based on the technology of desiccant coated heat exchanger (DCHE) and combined with evaporative cooler,establishes a self-cooled desiccant air conditioning system.Verifies and analyses the feasibility and dehumidification performance of the air conditioning system under the summer condition in Shanghai.In this system,evaporative cooler is used to produce cooling water by dry air.The cooling water carries out the absorption heat from dehumidification process,at the same time,the supply system of recovery hot water by solar energy realizes the desiccant regeneration in the desiccant coated heat exchanger.The experimental results show that the average moisture removal and thermodynamic performance coefficient are 8.11 g/kg and 0.51,respectively.While at the same other parameters,the moisture removal and thermodynamic performance coefficient increase significantly with the increase of humidity ratio of inlet air.

Abstract:Solar cooling has been proved to be technically feasible. It is particularly an attractive application for solar energy, because of the near coincidence of peak cooling loads with the available solar power. Currently, most of the solar cooling systems commonly used are the hot water driven lithium bromide absorption chillers. Solar absorption cooling systems are available from various reports, in large capacities up to several hundred kilowatts. In this paper, a minitype solar absorption cooling system was designed and installed in Shanghai Jiao tong University. The system mainly contains 96 m2 solar collector arrays, one absorption chiller with the rated cooling capacity of 8kW, and a heat storage water storage tank of 3 m3 in volume. The chilled water can be delivered either into fan coils or into radiant cooling panels which are installed to satisfy the indoor thermal environment of the test room. As for the fan coil cooling mode, it was found that the average cooling output reached 3.62kW during 8h operation under typical weather condition of Shanghai. With regard to radiant cooling mode, an individual fresh air unit was installed for the purpose of preventing the cooling panels from condensation. Compared with the experimental results of the fan coil cooling mode, the average cooling output of the radiant cooling mode reached 4.47kW, which increased by 23.5%. Furthermore, the PMV inside the test room was between -0.5 and 0.5, which showed great advantage in meeting the indoor thermal comfort.

Abstract:This paper discusses the principles of solar adsorption refrigeration and the characteristics of air conditioning radiation, designs solar adsorbent bed with activated carbon - methanol as working pair and its accompanying condenser, evaporator, radiant cooling tubes and other equipment. Through experiments, it changes water supply by change flow rate of chilled water, in order to get chilled water supply and return water temperature and room temperature curve. To analysis COP value of system under different flow rate of chilled water, and get the optimal flow rate of chilled water supply.

Abstract:A new hybrid system of solar water heater and refrigerator is developed, the theoretical analysis and experimental work are carried out. The experimental results show that heat and cooling can be provided in the hybrid system in which solar solid adsorption refrigeration system is added in traditional solar water heater, it clearly shows that solar energy can be applied efficiently and synthetically, the utilization ratio of total energy is very high. By the way, a lot of practical key technologies which are active in utilizing solar solid adsorption refrigeration are also discussed, so that solar solid adsorption technologies can be applied to families.

Abstract:The main advantage of solar cooling is that cooling loads and solar gains occur at the same time, at least on a seasonal level. There are several ways to get solar cooling effect, amongst them thermally driven chiller-based and desiccant systems are promising, because they can be used for integration of heating and cooling together, and can have a high solar energy conversion efficiency. This paper is devoted to present and analyze the energy conversion process, the cooling cycle, the advancement of new technology, etc., with respect to the most often used thermally driven solar cooling technologies.

Abstract:Solar cooling turns out to be a feasible method to reduce the electricity consumption of air conditioning systems in buildings. Air-cooled single effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller has shown advantages in residential applications. It can be driven by common evacuated tube solar collectors, and save water, maintenance expense and space, due to the absence of cooling tower. However, there is no available small capacity commercial air-cooled LiBr-H2O absorption chiller yet, because of the crystallization risk under ambient conditions. In this work, an air-cooled single effect absorption chiller for which the cooling capacity is 6 kW and a solar air conditioning system were developed. The air-cooled single effect absorption chiller was fabricated and tested under a broad range of steady-state conditions. The chiller was proved successful for real application without crystallization risk and the influence of different operating conditions was also analyzed. Moreover, the performance of a solar air conditioning system using the proposed chiller was investigated for residential cooling application. The results show that the studied absorption chiller can meet about 65% of the total cooling load of the building with an average COPth of about 0.61. Furthermore, 28% of the titled solar radiation is converted into cooling capacity by the solar air conditioning system. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Solar powered sorption cooling systems have been researched and demonstrated in recent years, which contain adsorption cooling, absorption cooling and desiccant cooling. The various typical systems with small scale for potential residential applications are discussed and analyzed, in which the working principals, system suitability for solar cooling, performance, maintenance and economic viability have been discussed in this paper. In the cities of China, an ideal opportunity to carry out solar renovation with roof-integrated collectors is in combination with the rebuilding of apartment roofs from flat to be inclined. With regard to multi-storied residential buildings, central hot water supply system and central-individual hot water supply system are more appropriate in view of aesthetic compatibility of solar collectors with building roof and convenience of management. As for public buildings, it is highly recommended to design solar-powered integrated energy systems for the purpose of high solar fraction.
A Study On A Novel Solar Heating And Humidification System With Desiccant Rotor

Abstract:In this paper, a solar space heating system, which combines the technologies of evacuated tube solar air collector and desiccant humidification together, has been configured and experimentally investigated. In winter, two operation modes are possible, namely, direct solar heating mode and solar heating with desiccant humidification. Besides, the system can work in cooling mode in summer. The system mainly includes 15 m(2) solar air collectors and a desiccant air conditioning unit with design cooling capacity for 5 kW. The system has been put into operation and its heating performance has been monitored from November 2008 to March 2009. Under typical weather condition, it is found that the solar heating system can convert about 50% of the received solar radiation to the capability of air conditioning in sunny day and provide fresh air above 30 degrees C, thereby increasing the temperature of conditioned space by about 10 degrees C. Moreover, solar heating with desiccant humidification is confirmed to be capable of improving indoor relative humidity from health harmful level to comfort level. Due to the absence of water, which has to be employed in traditional evaporative humidification based systems, desiccant humidification based solar heating holds significant promise for the improvement of indoor air quality.

Abstract:Four types of combined cooling and heating system consisted of solar powered absorption chiller and electric vapor compression heat pumps,were designed for an office building under Shanghai climate conditions in this paper.The four systems include heat pipe evacuated tube collectors or parabolic trough concentrating collectors,single or double effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller,air cooling heat pump or water source heat pump respectively.Comparison of abilities for energy saving and economic analysis were conducted for the four systems.It is shown by the results that the system including parabolic trough concentrating collectors plus a double effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller and a air cooling heat pump,performances well in both of the above two aspects.The primary energy ratio is reduced by about 50 percent.

Abstract:Different types of solar collectors should be integrated with different sorption chillers. Traditional evacuated tube U pipe solar collector, high efficient CPC (Compound Parabolic Concentrating) solar collector and PTC (Parabolic Trough Collector) solar collector can provide 60-85 degrees C, 85-125 degrees C and 125-150 degrees C of hot water. So, they can drive silica gel water adsorption chillers, single-effect LiBr absorption chillers and double-effect LiBr absorption chillers, respectively. This paper will present the experimental performance investigation and economic analysis of three small solar cooling systems with these different kinds of collectors and chillers. The test results show that the solar COP (Coefficient of Performance) of the solar cooling system with adsorption chiller and U pipe solar collectors is about 0.15 and the silica gel water adsorption chiller can be driven by 55 degrees C of hot water. The solar COP of the system with CPC solar collector and single effect absorption chiller can reach 0.24 in the sunny weather condition. The solar COP of the solar cooling system with PTC solar collectors is about 0.5 and the double-effect LiBr absorption chiller is more attractive because of its higher solar COP (Coefficient of Performance) and better economy.
