Contemporary Chinese Fiction and Its Relations with World Literature

Abstract:There is no doubt that world literature has close relations with Chinese literature as Goethe first conceptualized the term Weltliteratur after he had read some Chinese literary works of minor importance through English or French translation. But unfortunately, for a long period of time, Chinese literature has never occupied a prominent position on the map of world literature, largely due to a long-standing “Eurocentric” and later “Western-centric” mode of thinking. Despite this, Chinese translators and literary scholars have in the past hundred years still spent much time and energy bringing various foreign, especially Western, literary doctrines and trends of literature and culture into China. Thus there has appeared an unbalanced situation of literary translation. On the one hand, numerous foreign literary works, especially Western literary works, have come to China through translation and critical introduction; but on the other hand, few contemporary Chinese literary works have been translated for the outside world, although quite a few classical and modern Chinese literary works have been translated into major foreign languages. Mo Yan is certainly one of the very few contemporary novelists who has attracted not only the literary book market but also the authoritative institutions, including the Swedish Academy, which awarded him the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature in 2012. He was naturally very happy about that, but at the same time he expressed his worry and hope for Chinese literature: “my next dream will be that one day, some young Western writers will say that their work is inspired and influenced by certain Chinese writers.”1 This is also the hope and dream that many other contemporary Chinese writers have, though most contemporary Chinese writers, including Mo Yan himself, started their writing career under the influence of foreign literature, especially Western literature. To them, Western literature is almost equal to world literature, and to read and study Western literary works means to read and study world literature. Similarly, to go to the West simply means to go global, as international literary circles are always dominated by Western literature. But even so, we could still find that quite a few important contemporary Chinese novelists have succeeded in being among world literature. Not only do their novels sell well in international book markets, but they are also critically discussed by international literary critical circles and scholarship. Of these writers, I will discuss here four representatives who have acquired considerable international reputations and influence with their outstanding achievements and unique characteristics. They should be recognized as world-class writers for their writings are certainly of world significance.

A pioneer of DNA nanotechnology, Professor Liu from the University of Stuttgart in Germany, our latest Light People, has been working at the interface, where nanophotonics meets biology and chemistry. On the path of scientific explorations, she believes in hard working and persistency, as indicated by a line of Chinese poetry she likes, "Don't stop chasing the wind and the moon, the spring mountain is at the end of the plain." Abstract:Abstract Mo Yan's 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature quickly turned into the most controversial international literary prize of recent memory. The controversy took place largely in English, and largely on the American Internet, where as much as Mo Yan was honored as being an important literary voice from a country whose contemporary cultural products are often neglected, he was criticized for supporting the Chinese Communist Party and its government. Defenders have pointed out that the politics in his fiction are neither as simple nor as straightforward as his party membership might otherwise indicate, but critics have said he writes a “daft hilarity” in a “diseased language,” calling his works in translation “superior to the original in their aesthetic unity and sureness.” Taking a detailed look at the controversy and debate, I examine the theoretical assumptions and stakes at work in the reading of Mo Yan and his Nobel, with attention to their ideological underpinnings, followed with a discussion on the importance of considering translation and the relationship between literary reading and politics. I close with a look toward a broadly applicable model of internationalist reading I call translational.

Abstract:Abstract Mo Yan, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, has published many new works of different genres since 2017, such as novels, poems, dramas, operas and even sketch stories, attracting a lot of attention and discussion. Although these new works are numerous, they are still characterized by exploration and transition. There is a phenomenon of “unfinalizability” in these new novels, which is characteristic of Mo Yan’s literary writings, such as the recurrence of the literary figure “Mo Yan”. Mo Yan has adopted many writing techniques in his new works to strengthen their concern and criticism of reality, such as reflecting society through focusing on individuals, close-up simple descriptions, typification of contemporary group mentality and a new “hit acupoint” illustration style. Moreover, his new novels present literary, realistic and even philosophical “uncertainty” through a method of life intuition. However, when we analyze Mo Yan’s new works in his whole writing lineage, we will realize the author’s loyalty to reality and art, and his works’ foreseeing power unconsciously becomes evident.

Abstract:British female novelist Doris Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007, which has given us lots of illuminations. First of all, her writing is full of idealist tendency, and then, she was involved in the feminist movement and is especially good at describing the subject matters about coloniality. Plus her Diaspora identity, Lessing has always been observed and even critically studied by both writers as well as literary scholars and critics. To the the present author, Lessing's prize winning has proved the authority and justice of literary Nobel Prize. But to Chinese literature, Nobel Prize should not be regarded as the only criterion to judge its literary quality. That Chinese writers have failed to be awarded this prize has several reasons. At the beginning of the new century, literature is challenged by consumer culture, which has caused literary creation to be in-crisis. Although Chinese literature of the new century can no longer create any sensational effect, as a unique means of aesthetic expression, literature will never die. The day is to come when some of the excellent Chinese writers of great potential will be awarded the Nobel. Prize for Literature.

Abstract:Winning of the Nobel Prize for Literature gave Mo Yan an international repute. And the study of Howard Goldblatts translation of Mos work has become a trend. Previous studies have already taken various of perspectives to research Goldblatts translation texts, focusing on his translation strategies and the effects in the western world. As Red Sorghum is among the most popular novels of Mo Yan in the western world, this essay will take it as the research material to reveal Goldblatts translation strategy of Explicitation from the perspective of the Relevance Theory, and thus to conclude a feasible approach for translators to disseminate Chinese literature and culture to be seen and heard by the world. It creatively combines Explicitation in stylistics and the Relevance Theory to categorize the effects of the translation in three types: add dramatic effects, enhance the tone and make the words more vivid. The findings indicate that Explicitation is feature of Goldblatts translation work and it does take positive effects on the dissemination of Chinese culture, providing the target readers the highest contextual effect with the lowest processing efforts.

Abstract:Mo Yan, as the first Chinese Nobel Laureate in Literature, holds significant importance in the overseas dissemination of his translated works. The intentional retreating of Sandalwood Death writing makes it a unique narrative where characters, folklore, and culture weave together in a polyphonic tapestry of the era. Drawing upon post-colonial translation theory, this analysis delves into Howard Goldblatt's English translation of Sandalwood Death, focusing on the translation and retransmission of sound embodied in characters (narrative translation of characters), folklore (translation of idioms and proverbs), and culture (terms, Maoqiang). The study suggests that the translator employs a plethora of estrangement strategies, reflecting an overall trend of post-colonial translation. Many Chinese cultural terms seamlessly integrate into Western discourse, illustrating the potential for establishing a balanced discourse between East and West. This investigation explores the nuanced interplay of voices, unraveling how translation choices contribute to a broader discourse of cultural equality and understanding in the context of post-colonial translation.

Abstract:Tu Youyou, a joint-recipient of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was not nomi-nated for the State Supreme Science and Technology Award of China. This case caused heated discussion in Chi-nese society. In order to deepen the understanding of the complexity of the case, based on original documents, the author studied the Understanding Conflict between Tu Youyou and the National Office for Science and Technol-ogy Awards in dealing with the 2003 Prince Mahidol Award in Medicine won by “China Cooperative Research Group on Qinghaosu and Its Derivatives as Antimalarials”. This article consists of four parts: the course of win-ning the Prince Mahidol Award in Medicine, the “represent problem” of awarding the Prince Mahidol Award in Medicine, the bonus distribution dispute on the Prince Mahidol Award in Medicine and the bonus donation failure of the the Prince Mahidol Award in Medicine. At the end of the article, the author discussed Tu Youyou’s failure in winning the 2012 State Supreme Science and Technology Award after getting nominated, and pointed out that it is necessary to improve China's science and technology award system and create the environment conducive to sci-ence and technology innovation, beneficial to fair competition and expedient to talent’s standing out.
