Abstract:A series of styrene derivatives with stilbene-like pendant were synthesized through heterogeneous Wittig reaction of triphenyl-(4-vinyl)-benzylphosphornium chloride with aromatic aldehydes. The substituted styrenic monomer, 4-(2-aryl)-vinyl-styrene, was strongly photoluminescent in solution and in solid state. Introduced electron-pushing substituents and lengthened conjugation both enhanced the emission intensity and led to a red shift of emission bands, with the maximum emission wavelength shifted from 378 to 494 nm. The fluorescece quantum efficiencies were determined by employing quinine sulfate as reference; and 4-(2-anthryl)-vinyl-styrene (AVS) possessed the highest quantum efficiency (lambda = 494 nm, phi(f) = 0.635).

Abstract:A facile synthesis of free-base and metalated stilbene-linked porphyrin dimers via the Wittig reaction is reported. 5-(4-chloromethylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl porphyrin was prepared by direct chloromethylation of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin as the useful precursor for both the porphyrin-derived Wittig reagent and the monoformylporphyrin. It was found that the stilbene-linked porphyrin dimers were formed with a remarkable sterochemical preference in the cis-form. Their absorption and emission spectra were measured.

Abstract:Six novel benzo[1-2,4-5]dioxazole derivatives containing stilbenyl were designed and synthesized from substituted aromatic aldehyde/ketone and 2,6-bis(4-chloromethyl phenylene)benzo[1-2,4-5]dioxazole through the Wittig-Horner reaction,and their chemical structures were determined by spectra and elemental analysis.The effects of their chemical structures on the fluorescent properties and fluorescence quantum yield were investigated,and analytical results showed that three target compounds had blue light emitting characteristics and two target compounds could give off green light.

Abstract:Three new chromophores and trans -4-( N -(ethyl 4″-nitrobenzoate)- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(dimethyl amino) stilbene (DMANHAS) have been synthesized and whose chemical structures have been characterized by 1 H NMR, IR, and elemental analyses. Linear absorption, single-photon-induced fluorescence and two-photon-induced fluorescence are experimentally studied. Trans -4-( N -2-hydroxyethyl- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(dimethyl amino)stilbene (DMAHAS) and trans -4-( N -2-hydroxyethyl- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(diethyl amino)stilbene (DEAHAS) have effective two-photon absorption cross-sections of σ 2 =0.91×10 −46 cm 4 s/photon and σ 2 =1.19×10 −46 cm 4 s/photon at 532 nm by using an open aperture Z-scan technique, respectively. When pumped with 800 nm laser irradiation, DMAHAS and DEAHAS indicate strong two-photon-induced blue fluorescence of 436 and 440 nm, respectively, while trans -4-( N -(ethyl 4″-nitrobenzoate)- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(diethyl amino) stilbene (DEANHAS) and DMANHAS exhibit no fluorescence.

Abstract:In this paper, we have presented a range of new nitro-stilbene derivatives with benzophenones via ether or ester bridged bond. These nitro-stilbene derivatives with benzophenones have been conveniently obtained by condensation reaction. The linked benzophenones were efficiently introduced to nitro-stilbene dyes. The structures of these compounds have been characterized with NMR and element analysis. The single crystals of two target compounds (11 and 12) have been obtained, and their X-ray crystallographic data have been determined and discussed. Remarkably different absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy was observed for nitro-stilbene derivatives with benzophenones via different linked bonds. The results show that electron-donating or electron withdrawing bridged bonds have significant influence on the absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, which makes it possible for the development of ideal nitro-stilbene dyes with benzophenones through chemical strategy.

Abstract:Two novel stilbene derivatives bearing anthracene core based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole were efficiently synthesized and characterized by 1 H-NMR, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The optical properties of the title compounds were investigated by UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra in different solvents. Chemical calculations were performed by density functional theory (DFT) at the (B3LYP)/6-31G* level. The results show the two compounds exhibit strong green fluorescence emission ranged from 489–493 nm, and the fluorescence quantum yield ranged from 0.78–0.92. Their HOMO and LUMO levels are (−5.44 eV, −2.25 eV) and (−5.45 eV, −2.28 eV), respectively. The influence of the solvent on the fluorescence intensities was also discussed.

Abstract:A series of anthracene-based stilbene derivatives containing an 1,3,4-oxadiazole unit were efficiently synthesized by a four-pots reaction sequence. All of the target compounds were characterized using, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. For the samples, the UV–visible absorption coefficient, maximum wavelength, fluorescence excitation wavelength, fluorescence emission wavelength and fluorescence quantum yield, were measured in dilute tetrahydrofuran solution. Cyclic voltammetry studies revealed that the molecules have low-lying LUMO and HOMO energy levels suggesting these compounds may possess good electron-transporting or hole-blocking properties.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization and spectroscopy of a range of novel substituted p-nitro-stilbene derivatives with different bridging bonds were presented. The molecular structure characterization was carried out with H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and elemental analysis. The ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence of the compounds were investigated in various solvents. The maximal absorption wavelength of the nitro-stilbene derivatives with an ether bond exhibited approximate 30 to 40 nm bathochromic shift compared to that of nitro-stilbene dyes with an ester bond. Furthermore, the nitro-stilbene derivatives with an ether bond displayed obvious photoluminescence, while the nitro-stilbene derivatives with an ester bond showed weak fluorescence emission. The detection of the cyclic voltammograms of the nitro-stilbene derivatives showed that the nitro-stilbene compounds with different linking bonds exhibited different redox proceses at various scan rates. The theroretical calculations of HOMO and LUMO energy of nitro-stilbene derivatives showed that the energy gaps between HOMO and LUMO of 3 and 4 were lower than those of 1 and 2. The electron density of the frontier orbitals of nitro-stilbene derivatives was observed to be affacted by the linking bonds, which thus made it possible to tune the spectroscopy of these dyes with chemical strategy. The differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry showed that the thermal stabilities of these dyes were not much affected by the linking bond. The results presented in this paper would be great interest in development of ideal nitro-stilbene derivatives for special purposes.

Abstract:An efficient and practical phosphine-catalyzed homo-coupling reaction of benzyl chlorides is described. The reactions proceed smoothly in the presence of CsF/B(OMe)3 and NaH as the base, respectively, to provide trans-stilbenes in good yields with a broad scope. Unsymmetrical stilbenes are also generated from the reactions of benzyl chlorides with phosphonium salts. Several P-based key intermediates have been detected by NMR and HRMS analyses, which shed light on the postulated catalytic cycle. In the presence of different bases, the transformations involve two different pathways, in which phenylcarbene and phosphonium alkoxide are considered as key intermediates, respectively. The two pathways are complementary in synthesis but different in mechanisms. The synthetic utility, including gram-scale reactions and straightforward access to π-conjugated molecules, has been demonstrated as well.

Abstract:Synthesis of (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl)quinoline has been easily achieved by an acid catalysed condensation of 2-methylquinoline with 4-bromobenzaldehyde. Various boronic acid derivatives reacted with (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl)quinoline to afford a series of novel quinoline-based aryl substituted styryl derivatives by the catalysis of Pd(PPh3)4 at 85 °C in dimethoxyethane. The UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescent spectra of them in CH2Cl2 were investigated.

Abstract:A novel compound 2,6-di(4′-bisphenylaminostilbenyl)benzo[1-2,4-5]bisoxazole have been designed and synthesized with triphenylamino aldehyde and 2,6-bis(4-chloromethyl phenylene)benzo [1-2,4-5]dioxazole through Wittig-Horner reaction,that simultaneously taking triphenylamino as a hole transporting unit and benzobisoxazole as an electron transporting unit into the stilbene can evidently enhanced its light-emitting and light quantum efficiency.Its chemical structure has been determined by UV-Vis,IR,()~1HNMR and EA,and photo-luminescent properties have also been researched.The results indicated that the synthesized compound has trans-stilbene structural character and can be used as small molecular blue light-emitting material.

Abstract:Since electroluminescence (EL) of 8-hydroquiniline (Alq3) and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) was reported, organic electroluminescence has attracted intense interest because of their great academic and commercial signifigance([1-3]). Besides the exciton emission from pi* to pi, some new emission peaks can be observed sometimes due to the interaction between the molecules. These phenomena have been attributed to the formation of excimer or exciplex([4-7]). Formation of excimer is a key drawback because the color stability is an important basic requirement for the production of these devices([8]). So it is very important to study the behavior of excimer both in solution and film state. In this letter, the generation and recombination processes of excitons and excimers of a conjugated molecule, 1-(9-anthrylethynyl)-4-chloromethyl-2, 5-dimethoxybenzene (ACDB), are investigated through the measurement of the absorption, photoluminescence and electroluminescence of ACDB.

Abstract:Efficient Ti-catalyzed reductive coupling methodology was first employed to synthesize three new chromophores, whose chemical structures have been characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, MS spectra, and elemental analyses. These dye solutions exhibit the linear transmission of ca. 90% at wavelengths greater than or equal to 500 nm at the concentrations of 0.005-0.0005 mol dm(-3). Pumped by ca. 700 nm laser irradiation, they possess large two-photon absorption cross sections of 44.5 x 40(-48)- 62.0 x 10(-48) cm(4) s photon(-1), and strong up-conversion blue fluorescence occuring at 437-452 nm. A large three-photon absorption cross section of 27.3 x 10(-76) cm(6) s(2) photon(-1) has also observed for one of these dyes under ca. 990 nm laser irradiation.

Abstract:Stilbene is an important class of biologically active metabolites with diarylethene scaffold, and which have a broad range of biological activities as the lead for drug discovery. In this study, a novel series of stilbene derivatives bearing 1,3-benzodioxole moiety was designed and synthesized via a convenient method with good to excellent yields, and their structures were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, ESI-MS spectrum. These newly prepared compounds were evaluated for their potential biological activities including fungicidal, insecticidal, and cytotoxic activities.

Abstract:Two novel pi-conjugated cyanostilbene derivatives, FLU-CNPH and TPE-CNPH, were designed and synthesized by introducing the strong electron donor 1, 4-dihydropyrro[3,2-b]indole and AIE electron donor tetraphenylethylene (TPE) to the (3',5'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-biphenyl-4-yl)-acetonitrile, respectively. Both of them were fully characterized and their AIE behaviors were investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and FE-SEM images. Their optimized structures and frontier molecular orbitals were calculated with the DFT by using Materials Studio 7.0 software to study the relationship between the structure and properties. Abstract:A new and convenient synthetic method has been developed for the construction of stilbenes bearing electron-withdrawing group(s) by using benzils and arylmethyldiphenylphosphine oxides via sequences involving Wittig-Horner reaction and a rearrangement in the presence of t-BuOK in toluene under mild conditions. This approach could be readily applied to a facile synthesis of biologically important natural products, resveratrol and its derivatives, such as trimetboxystilbenes 1 (Z) and 2 (E).
