Abstract:A series of styrene derivatives with stilbene-like pendant were synthesized through heterogeneous Wittig reaction of triphenyl-(4-vinyl)-benzylphosphornium chloride with aromatic aldehydes. The substituted styrenic monomer, 4-(2-aryl)-vinyl-styrene, was strongly photoluminescent in solution and in solid state. Introduced electron-pushing substituents and lengthened conjugation both enhanced the emission intensity and led to a red shift of emission bands, with the maximum emission wavelength shifted from 378 to 494 nm. The fluorescece quantum efficiencies were determined by employing quinine sulfate as reference; and 4-(2-anthryl)-vinyl-styrene (AVS) possessed the highest quantum efficiency (lambda = 494 nm, phi(f) = 0.635).

Abstract:Three new chromophores and trans -4-( N -(ethyl 4″-nitrobenzoate)- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(dimethyl amino) stilbene (DMANHAS) have been synthesized and whose chemical structures have been characterized by 1 H NMR, IR, and elemental analyses. Linear absorption, single-photon-induced fluorescence and two-photon-induced fluorescence are experimentally studied. Trans -4-( N -2-hydroxyethyl- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(dimethyl amino)stilbene (DMAHAS) and trans -4-( N -2-hydroxyethyl- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(diethyl amino)stilbene (DEAHAS) have effective two-photon absorption cross-sections of σ 2 =0.91×10 −46 cm 4 s/photon and σ 2 =1.19×10 −46 cm 4 s/photon at 532 nm by using an open aperture Z-scan technique, respectively. When pumped with 800 nm laser irradiation, DMAHAS and DEAHAS indicate strong two-photon-induced blue fluorescence of 436 and 440 nm, respectively, while trans -4-( N -(ethyl 4″-nitrobenzoate)- N -ethyl amino)-4′-(diethyl amino) stilbene (DEANHAS) and DMANHAS exhibit no fluorescence.

Abstract:Two novel pi-conjugated cyanostilbene derivatives, FLU-CNPH and TPE-CNPH, were designed and synthesized by introducing the strong electron donor 1, 4-dihydropyrro[3,2-b]indole and AIE electron donor tetraphenylethylene (TPE) to the (3',5'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-biphenyl-4-yl)-acetonitrile, respectively. Both of them were fully characterized and their AIE behaviors were investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and FE-SEM images. Their optimized structures and frontier molecular orbitals were calculated with the DFT by using Materials Studio 7.0 software to study the relationship between the structure and properties. Abstract:In this article, we presented novel nitro-stilbene derivatives with one or two benzophenone groups as photoinitiators via multi-steps synthesis. The ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and the emission spectroscopy of the compounds were determined in various solvents. The results showed that the ultraviolet/visible absorption spectroscopy of the derivatives with benzophenone moiety displayed overlap effects of nitro-stilbene and benzophenone parts. In non-polar solvents, the derivatives exhibited strong emission, while they displayed weak emission in modest and strong polar solvents. Dyes-linked benzopheonone groups displayed stronger fluorescence emission than simple chromophore parent molecules. Visible-light photoinitiating effects of the derivatives were investigated extensively. Methyl methacrylate could be photoinitiated efficiently by the derivatives with benzophenone moieties at very low concentration, even at 1 × 10−5 mol/L. While the photopolymerization efficiency of styrene initiated by the derivatives was lower than that of methyl methacrylate. Our results showed that the dye-linked photoinitators had more efficient photoinitiating than the simple mixture of dye and photoinitator. Furthermore, the derivative with two benzophenone groups displayed more excellent phototiniatiating effects than the derivative with one benzophenone group. Thermodynamics driving for the occurrence of visible-light photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer from chromophore part to benzophenone part was evaluated. Benzopinacol moiety produced in photoreaction was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonant spectroscopy. Thermal stability of the derivatives was analyzed.

Abstract:Two novel 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted benzene,1,2,4,5-tetra(4-N,N-diphenylaminostyryl)benzene(TDASB) and 1,2,4,5-tetra(4-N,N-di(4″-bromophenyl) aminostyryl)benzene (TDBSB),were synthesized through Wittig-Horner reactions. Their structures were characterized by IR,NMR,MS,and melting points. The maximum Absorption peaks in dichloromethane were at 400nm for TDASB and 396nm for TDBSB,respectively. The maximum emission wavelengths were at 493nm for TDASB and 491nm for TDBSB in dichloromethane,respectively. The fluorescence lifetime were 1.7022,3.633ns for TDASB and 1.2810,4.8473ns for TDBSB. The relationship of Stokes shift with solvent polarity was discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we have presented a range of new nitro-stilbene derivatives with benzophenones via ether or ester bridged bond. These nitro-stilbene derivatives with benzophenones have been conveniently obtained by condensation reaction. The linked benzophenones were efficiently introduced to nitro-stilbene dyes. The structures of these compounds have been characterized with NMR and element analysis. The single crystals of two target compounds (11 and 12) have been obtained, and their X-ray crystallographic data have been determined and discussed. Remarkably different absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy was observed for nitro-stilbene derivatives with benzophenones via different linked bonds. The results show that electron-donating or electron withdrawing bridged bonds have significant influence on the absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, which makes it possible for the development of ideal nitro-stilbene dyes with benzophenones through chemical strategy.

Abstract:Two new D-pi-A type compounds, where electron-donor D is tertiary amino group, electron-acceptor A is 2-benzothiazolyl and a is two conjugated styryl units, have been synthesized. They are named as trans, trans-2-{4-[4-(N, N-diethylamino)styryl]styryl}-1, 3-benzothiazole and trans, trans-2-{4-[4-(N, N-diphenylamino)styryl]styryl}-1, 3-benzothiazole. Both compounds show strong two-photon excited fluorescence in yellow-orange region when excited by a femtosecond laser at 800 nm.

Abstract:Four new multi-branched two-photon absorption chromophores, namely 1-(4-bromobenzal)-3,5-bis(4-((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)phenyl)benzene (4), tris(4-((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)phenyl)-benzene (5), 6-chloro-N2,N4-bis(4-((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)phenyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine (6), tris-[4-(2-pyridin-4-yl-vinyl)-phenyl]-amine (7), have been synthesized and characterized. One-photon fluorescence, fluorescent quantum yields and two-photon fluorescence have been investigated. The experimental two-photon absorption cross-sections of 4–7 in DMF are 6, 11, 13GM (pumped by 740nm laser) and 19GM (pumped by 800nm laser), respectively. The calculated two-photon absorption cross-sections of 4–7 are 5.41, 7.67, 9.57 and 76.14GM, respectively. The two-photon induced fluorescent peak wavelengths of 4–7 in DMF are 421, 425, 474 and 534nm pumped by 680, 680, 740 and 800nm laser, respectively. The results show that molecule 7 is a good two-photon absorption fluorophore possessing long two-photon fluorescent lifetime, good fluorescent quantum yield and large two-photon absorption cross-section. The two-photon absorption peak wavelength of molecule 7 is at 800nm, which is favourable for initiating two-photon photopolymerization.

Abstract:A series of novel acrylate monomers bearing stilbene segments with D- -A structure, 4-methacrylate-4'-nitro stilbene (NS), 4-(6-methacrylate)hexyl-4'-nitro stilbene (HNS) and 4-(6-methacrylate)hexyl-2,3-dimethoxy-4'-nitro stilbene (DMHNS), were synthesized by the Witting reaction and polymerized by free radical polymerization. These stilbene-containing monomers and polymers were fully characterized, and their fluorescent properties in solution and solid state were also investigated. The emission band of monomers and corresponding polymers in solution also showed a remarkable effect with increasing polarity of the solvent. More importantly, the fluorescence emission could be adjusted from green to orange and even red regions by forming donor- -acceptor (D- -A) construction.

Abstract:This paper describes a new fluorescent family of branched dyes containing benzophenone unit including 4-N, N-diphenylamino-4′-phenacyl-stilbene (C1), 4,4′-di(4-benzoylphenylethylene)yl-triphenylamine (C2) and 4,4′,4″-tri(4-benzoylphenylethylene)yl-triphenylamine (C3). Benzophenone part is coupled with core through C–C double bond. The chemical structures of the derivatives are characterized with 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis. Strong π–π stacking interactions are discovered with the analysis of the X-ray crystallographic data of C1. The absorption maxima and emission maxima of the derivatives exhibit gradual bathochromic shift from C1 to C3. The optical density of C1, C2 and C3 are shown to be related to the number of branches. The changes of dipole moments between the excited and ground states for C1, C2 and C3 were estimated to be 4.356, 8.091 and 8.479 Derby, respectively by Lippert equation, confirming that the internal charge transfer (ICT) dominates the process of excited singlet state. The possibility as fluorescence probes of the derivatives on the estimation of what region of micelles interacting with samples was evaluated.
Effects on the two-photon excited fluorescence of thiophene derivatives

Abstract:Three new thiophene-based organic luminescence compounds named as 2,5-bis(p-N,N-diethylaminostyryl)thiophene (BEST), 2,5-bis(p-N,N- diphenylaminostyryl)thiophene (BPST) and 2,5-bis(p-N-carbazoylstyryl)thiophene (BCST) were synthesized. All of their single-photon excited fluorescence (SPEF) locate in the range of ∼530nm with the quantum yield around 40%, and the corresponding lifetime was ∼1 ns. The target compounds show strong solvatochromism in their SPEF spectra except BCST. There is no obvious change for the peak wavelength in the linear spectra of BCST in different polar solvent. Excited by a fs laser at 800 nm, strong up-converted fluorescence of target compounds was detected. The profile of two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) was likely with that of SPEF. The two-photon absorption (TPA) cross sections of the compounds were determined by TPEF method. All target compounds show large TPA cross section in our experiments. So that thiophene derives may have good TPA properties.

Abstract:Two novel stilbene derivatives bearing anthracene core based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole were efficiently synthesized and characterized by 1 H-NMR, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The optical properties of the title compounds were investigated by UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra in different solvents. Chemical calculations were performed by density functional theory (DFT) at the (B3LYP)/6-31G* level. The results show the two compounds exhibit strong green fluorescence emission ranged from 489–493 nm, and the fluorescence quantum yield ranged from 0.78–0.92. Their HOMO and LUMO levels are (−5.44 eV, −2.25 eV) and (−5.45 eV, −2.28 eV), respectively. The influence of the solvent on the fluorescence intensities was also discussed.

Abstract:A series of novel diamines linked by varying conjugated bridges were characterized using FTIR, NMR and UV–visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The photoluminescence and thermal properties of the compounds were related to structure and quantum chemical calculations were employed to study the optimized ground state geometry of the compounds. The diarylamines exhibited blue to green fluorescence emission and displayed high thermal stability and high glass transition temperature. As such, the compounds might be very useful as hole-transporting materials in organic light-emitting diodes.
Three-photon Absorption and Multiphoton Fluorescence Emission in Star-shaped Stilbene Chromophores

Abstract:The three-photon absorption and multiphoton upconversion fluorescence spectra of star-shaped stilbene derivatives 2,5-bis{4-{2-N,N-bis[4-(2-N,N-diphenyl-amino-phenyl-vinyl)phenyl]aminostyryl} phenyl}-1,3,4-oxadiazole (DPASPO) and 1,2,4,5-tetra(4-N,N-diphenylaminostyryl)benzene (PASB) were measured using a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser. The absorption, one-photon fluorescence and fluorescence lifetime have been investigated. When pumped with 800 nm femtosecond laser irradiation, chromophore DPASPO and PASB show strong two-photon excited yellow green fluorescence at 583 nm and 547 nm respectively. When pumped with 1260 nm femtosecond laser, DPASPO and PASB show strong three-photon excited fluorescence at 612 nm and 572 nm in the solution of dichloromethane, respectively. Three-photon absorption cross-sections determined by nonlinear transmission method are 16.69 x 10(-79) cm(6).s(2) (1300 nm) for DPASPO and 6.81 x 10(-79) cm(6).s(2) (1320 nm) for PASB, respectively. These stilbene derivatives show large 3PA cross-sections. In these star-shaped chromophores, the increasing the stilbene-branched moieties and an extended pi-conjugation domain, and through-space delocalization results in a increase of three photon absorption.

Abstract:A series of new one, two, and three-branched two-photon absorption triazine derivatives with a π-bond and a σ-electron pair as a bridge have been synthesized and their photophysical properties have been systematically investigated. These chromophores showed obvious solvatochromic effects, i.e., significant bathochromic shifting of the emission spectra and larger Stokes shifts were observed in more polar solvents mainly due to intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT). The two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-section values were determined by the two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) measurements in DMF. This result further proved that a σ-electron pair as a bridge is an efficient way to transfer charge as well as a π bridge, and that their 2PA cross-section values (δ) increase with increasing branch number.

Abstract:Synthesis of (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl)quinoline has been easily achieved by an acid catalysed condensation of 2-methylquinoline with 4-bromobenzaldehyde. Various boronic acid derivatives reacted with (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl)quinoline to afford a series of novel quinoline-based aryl substituted styryl derivatives by the catalysis of Pd(PPh3)4 at 85 °C in dimethoxyethane. The UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescent spectra of them in CH2Cl2 were investigated.

Abstract:Two novel stilbene derivatives containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole moiety were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, (1)H NMR, MS. The photophysical processes of the title compounds were investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra in different solutions. The fluorescence quantum yield (Phi) of 1a and 1b in THF is 0.65 and 0.69, respectively. The influence of the solution on the fluorescence intensities was also discussed. Under ultraviolet light excitation, the two compounds exhibit strong blue fluorescence emission. They may serve as potential applications in organic electroluminescent materials.

Abstract:Four new bithiophene derivatives 5, 5'-bis (p-N, N-dimethylaminostyryl)-2,2'-bithiophene (BMSBT), 5, 5'-bis ( p-N, N-diethylaminostyryl) -2, 2'-bithiophene ( BESBT), 5, 5'-bis ( p-N-cyclobutylaminostyryl) -2, 2'-bithiophene ( BBSBT) and 5, 5'-bis ( p-N-carbazoylstyryl) -2, 2'-bithiophene ( BCSBT) were synthesized. The absorption, single-photon excited fluorescence, two-photon excited fluorescence spectra have been recorded. BMSBT, BESBT and BBSBT show strong solvatochromism in their single-photon excited fluorescence, suggesting greater polarity of their excited states. The two-photon absorption cross. sections of BMSBT and BESBT were determined to be 54 x 10(-50) (cm(4).s) /photon and 102 x 10(-50) (cm(4).s) /photon separately by two-photon excited fluorescence method.
