Abstract:Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is considered as a composite material, which contains natural aggregate (NA) coated by adhered cement mortar. The adhered mortar usually has higher porosity and water absorption and lower strength than NA, which often forms a weak region in RCA. These weak regions often lead to the negative effects on the mechanical properties and durability performance of RCA. In order to utilize the RCA in a more effective way, it is necessary to improve the quality and enhance the properties of the attached weak mortar to make it comparable to those of NA. This paper reviews the previously reported treatment techniques for RCA, identifying the applicability, limitation, strength and weakness of each technique to elucidate the selection principles of the suitable treatment method for RCA. Based on the review of various treatment methods, it is concluded that: (i) the combining of different treatment methods often leads to the best results in enhancing the properties of RCA than using individual treatment method. (ii) Heating treatment technique can be effective to remove the weak mortar. (iii) Surface treatment by using acid or pozzolanic materials is an effective treatment method in improving the properties and enhancing the quality of RCA.
