Abstract:The manipulation of microparticles using optical forces has led to many applications in the life and physical sciences. To extend optical trapping towards the nano-regime, in this work we demonstrate trapping of single nanoparticles in arrays of plasmonic coaxial nano-apertures with various inner disk configurations and theoretically estimate the associated forces. A high normalised experimental trap stiffness of 3.50fN/nm/mW for 20nm polystyrene particles is observed for an optimum design of 149nm for the nanodisk diameter at a trapping wavelength of 980nm. Theoretical simulations are used to interpret the enhancement of the observed trap stiffness. A quick particle trapping time of less than 8sec is obtained at a concentration of 14$\times$10$^{11}$ particles/ml with low incident laser intensity of 0.59mW/$\mu$m$^{2}$. This good trapping performance with fast delivery of nanoparticles to multiple trapping sites emerges from a combination of the enhanced electromagnetic near-field and spatial temperature increase. This work has applications in nanoparticle delivery and trapping with high accuracy, and bridges the gap between optical manipulation and nanofluidics.

Optical Manipulation of Plasmonic Nanoparticles Using Laser Tweezers

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoparticles, typically gold and silver colloids, can be trapped by a highly focused Gaussian beam. The behavior of the particles in an optical trap, such as the alignment, stability and interaction between particles, depends on their plasmonic nature, determined by the correlation between the size, shape and material of the particles, and the wavelength and polarization of the trapping laser. For instance, an elongated nanoparticle aligns parallel to the polarization of a NIR trapping laser to minimize the optical potential energy. However, nanowires tend to align perpendicular to the polarization. A dimer of two isotropic nanoparticles in principle acts similar to a nanorod with its "long axis" (dimer axis) parallel to the laser polarization. These results are evidenced by dark-field scattering imaging and spectra, and agree well with discrete dipole approximation simulations of the near-fields around different nanostructures. Elongated nanoparticles, dimers and nanowires all rotate when the laser polarization is rotated. Irradiated under a circularly polarized laser, trapped objects spin spontaneously due to the transfer of angular momentum from the incident photons. The interaction between two gold nanoparticles in a dimer is complex because it involves the optical potential and the DLVO potential. The latter can be probed to some extent using dark-field scattering spectroscopy.

Abstract:The volume of the object that can be manipulated in solution is continuously decreasing toward an ultimate goal of a single molecule. However, Brownian motions suppress the molecular trapping. To date, free-molecule trapping in solution has not been accomplished. Here, we develop a strategy to directly trap, investigate, and release single molecules (∼2 nm) in solution by using an adjustable plasmonic optical nanogap, which has been further applied for selective single-molecule trapping. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical simulations demonstrated that the trapping force originated from plasmonic nanomaterials. This technique opens an avenue to manipulate single molecules and other objects in the size range of primary interest for physics, chemistry, and life and material sciences without the limitations of strong bonding group, ultra-high vacuum, and ultra-low temperature, and makes possible controllable single-molecule manipulation and investigation as well as bottom-up construction of nanodevices and molecular machines.

Abstract:We theoretically propose blue-detuned optical trapping for neutral atoms via strong near-field interfacing in a plasmonic nanohole array. The optical field at resonance forms a nanoscale-trap potential with an FWHM of 200 nm and about similar to 370 nm away from the nanohole; thus, a stable 3D atom trapping independent of the surface potential is demonstrated. The effective trap depth is more than 1 mK when the optical power of trapping light is only about 0.5 mW, while the atom scattering rate is merely about 3.31 s(-1), and the trap lifetime is about 800 s. This compact plasmonic structure provides high uniformity of trap depths and a two-layer array of atom nanotraps, which should have important applications in the manipulation of cold atoms and collective resonance fluorescence. Near-field Switching and Focusing Using Plasmonic Nanostructures with Different Polarizations

Abstract:In this paper, the near field distribution patterns excited from half spiral nanoslits and gratings are investigated. The various near field distribution patterns observed are due to the interference of propagating surface plasmon emerging from the nanoslits or gratings. The half spiral nanoslits are incident with left and right-handed circular polarization. The resulting focal spots are found at different positions for left (LHC) and right-handed circular (RHC) polarizations. This is due to the change in phase difference of propagating surface plasmon waves emerging from the nanoslit when excited by different circular polarizations. The distance between the focal spots for left and right-handed polarizations is lambda(spp)/2. In addition, the half spiral nanoslit is also illuminated with linear polarization in different rotational angles. This paper also includes the near field distributions that result from the interference of surface plasmon polariton fields with partial spiral shape. It is believed that these interesting field patterns due to different arrangements of nanoslits could be used for trapping molecules, near field imaging and sensing.

Abstract:A resonance plasmon mode is formed between a gold nanorod and an infinite slab in infrared range, with local electric field enhancement factor over 40. A strong optical attractive force is exerted on the rod by the slab at resonance frequency. Based on Maxwell stress tensor method and numerical simulations, the optical force was calculated to be over 2.0 nN/(mW/μm2). For a fixed incident wavelength, the enhanced optical force is obtained only for the rods with particular length when the diameter is fixed. This strong optical force could be used as a possible selective optical trapping technique in the future.

Abstract:We present experimental evidence of plasmonic-enhanced optical tweezers, of polystyrene beads in deionized water in the vicinity of metal-coated nanostructures. The optical tweezers operate with a continuous wave near-infrared laser. We employ a Cu/Au bilayer that significantly improves dissipation of heat generated by the trapping laser beam and avoid de-trapping from heat convection currents. We investigate the improvement of the optical trapping force and the effective trapping quality factor, and observe an exponential distance dependence of the trapping force from the nanostructures, indicative of evanescent plasmonic enhancement.

Abstract:Optical manipulation has attracted remarkable interest owing to its versatile and non-invasive nature. However, conventional optical trapping remains inefficient for the nanoscopic world. The emergence of plasmonics in recent years has brought a revolutionary change in overcoming limitations due to diffraction and the requirements for high trapping laser powers. Among the near-field optical trapping cavity-based systems, Fano resonant optical tweezers have a robust trapping capability. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate sequential trapping of 20 nm particles through the use of metamaterial plasmonic optical tweezers. We investigate the multiple trapping via trap stiffness measurements for various trapping positions at low and high incident laser intensities. Our configuration could be used as a light-driven nanoscale sorting device under low laser excitation. Our results provide an alternative approach to trap multiple nanoparticles at distinct hotspots, enabling new ways to control mass transport on the nanoscale.

Abstract:Recent advances in Nanotechnologies have prompted the need for tools to accurately and non-invasively manipulate individual nano-objects. Among possible strategies, optical forces have been foreseen to provide researchers with nano-optical tweezers capable to trap a specimen and move it in 3D. In practice though, the combination of weak optical forces involved and photothermal issues have thus far prevented their experimental realization. Here, we demonstrate first 3D optical manipulation of single 50 nm dielectric objects with near field nano-tweezers. The nano-optical trap is built by engineering a bowtie plasmonic aperture at the extremity of a tapered metal-coated optical fiber. Both the trapping operation and monitoring are performed through the optical fiber making these nano-tweezers totally autonomous and free of bulky optical elements. The achieved trapping performances allow for the trapped specimen to be moved over tens of micrometers during several minutes with very low in-trap intensities. This novel non-invasive approach is foreseen to open new horizons in nanosciences by offering an unprecedented level of control of nano-sized objects including heat-sensitive bio-specimens.

Abstract:The optical trapping of Au nanoparticles with dimensions as small as 10 nm in the gap of plasmonic dipole antennas is demonstrated. Single nanoparticle trapping events are recorded in real time by monitoring the Rayleigh scattering spectra of individual plasmonic antennas. Numerical simulations are also performed to interpret the experimental results, indicating the possibility to trap nanoparticles only a few nanometers in size. This work unveils the potential associated with the integration of plasmonic trapping with localized surface plasmon resonance based sensing techniques, in order to deliver analyte to specific, highly sensitive regions ("hot spots").

Abstract:We present an optical nanotrapping setup that exhibits enhanced efficiency, based on localized plasmonic fields around sharp metallic features. The substrates consist of laser-structured silicon wafers with quasi-ordered microspikes on the surface, coated with a thin silver layer. The resulting optical traps show orders of magnitude enhancement of the trapping force and the effective quality factor.

Abstract:The ability of metallic nanostructures to confine light at the sub-wavelength scale enables new perspectives and opportunities in the field of nanotechnology. Making use of this unique advantage, nano-optical trapping techniques have been developed to tackle new challenges in a wide range of areas from biology to quantum optics. In this work, starting from basic theories, we present a review of research progress in near-field optical manipulation techniques based on metallic nanostructures, with an emphasis on some of the most promising advances in molecular technology, such as the precise control of single-biomolecules. We also provide an overview of possible future research directions of nano-manipulation techniques.

Abstract:Optical trapping is having ever-increasing impact in science $-$ particularly biophysics, photonics and most recently in quantum optomechanics $-$ owing to its superior capability for manipulating nanoscale structures and materials. However, essentially all experimental optical trapping studies in the optical dipole regime have, to date, been dominated by the interaction between a material's electric polarizability, $\alpha_{e}$, and the electric part of the incident electromagnetic field, and therefore described by electric field intensity gradient forces. Optical trapping based on optical magnetic light-matter interactions has not been experimentally addressed despite it's immediate extension of the boundaries of optical trapping research and applications. This paper addresses this long-standing deficiency through the realization of optical magnetic trapping of large index of refraction (i.e., Si) nanoparticles and also presents a formalism for quantitative understanding of the experimental findings. Our experimental optical trapping results require including optical magnetic polarizability, $\alpha_{m}$, and electric-magnetic scattering forces associated with the Photonic Hall effect that are qualitatively and quantitatively validated by Maxwell stress tensor calculations. Our findings bring new opportunities for nanoparticle manipulation, potentially relax the limitations Ashkin claimed based on the optical Earnshaw's theorem, motivate optical matter formation by optical magnetic interactions, and suggest new N-body effects and symmetry breaking to drive dynamics of optical matter systems.

Resonant optical trapping of Janus nanoparticles in plasmonic nanoaperture

Abstract:Controlled trapping of light absorbing nanoparticles with low-power optical tweezers is crucial for remote manipulation of small objects. This study takes advantage of the synergetic effects of tightly confined local fields of plasmonic nanoaperture, self-induced back-action of nanoparticles, and resonant optical trapping method to demonstrate enhanced manipulation of Janus nanoparticles in metallic nanohole aperture. We theoretically demonstrate that displacement of Au-coated Janus nanoparticles toward plasmonic nanoaperture and proper orientation of the metal coating give rise to enhanced near-field intensity and pronounced optical force. We also explore the effect of resonant optical trapping by employing dual laser system, where an on-resonant green laser excites the metal-coated nanoparticle whereas an off-resonant near-infrared laser plays trapping role. It is found that, at optimum nanoparticle configuration, the resonant optical trapping technique can result in three-fold enhancement of optical force, which is attributed to excitation of surface plasmon resonance in Janus nanoparticles. The findings of this study might pave the way for low power optical manipulation of light-absorbing nanoparticles with possible applications in nanorobotics and drug delivery.

Fano resonance-assisted all-dielectric array for enhanced near-field optical trapping of nanoparticles

Abstract:Near-field optics can overcome the diffraction limit by creating strong optical gradients to enable the trapping of nanoparticles. However, it remains challenging to achieve efficient stable trapping without heating and thermal effects. Dielectric structures have been used to address this issue, but they usually offer weak trap stiffness. In this work, we exploit the Fano resonance effect in an all-dielectric quadrupole nanostructure to realize a twenty-fold enhancement of trap stiffness, compared to the off-resonance case. This enables a high effective trap stiffness of $1.19$ fN/nm for 100 nm diameter polystyrene nanoparticles with 3.5 mW/$\mu$m$^{2}$ illumination. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability of the structure to simultaneously trap two particles at distinct locations within the nanostructure array.

Abstract:We report focusing surface plasmon polariton (SPP) trapping of colloidal particles without optical interactions. Using a silver nanostructure, we demonstrate SPP launching and propagation under a p-polarized incident laser. In-plane Fresnel zone plate (FZP) is used to focus the SPP waves. Colloidal particles can be trapped at the silver nanostructure in the illumination region and the FZP focus area by focusing SPP force. The SPP tweezers open new perspectives in the subwavelength trapping and applications to lab-on-chip devices.

Abstract:Optical trapping enables precise control of individual particles of different sizes, such as atoms, molecules, or nanospheres. Optical tweezers provide free-space omnidirectional optical trapping of objects in laboratories around the world. As an alternative to standard macroscopic setups based on lenses, which are inherently bound by the diffraction limit, plasmonic and photonic nanostructures promise trapping by near-field optical effects on the extreme nanoscale. However, the practical design of lossless waveguide-coupled nanostructures capable of trapping sub-wavelength-sized particles in all spatial directions has until now proven insurmountable. In this work, we demonstrate an omnidirectional optical trap realized by inverse-designing fabrication-ready integrated dielectric nanocavities. The sub-wavelength optical trap is designed to rely solely on the gradient force and is thus particle-size agnostic. In particular, we show how a trapped particle with a radius of 15 nm experiences a force strong enough to overcome room-temperature thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, through the robust inverse design framework, we tailor manufacturable devices operating at short-wave infrared and near-infrared wavelengths. Our results open a new regime of levitated optical trapping by achieving a deep trapping potential capable of trapping single sub-wavelength particles in all directions using optical gradient forces. We anticipate potentially groundbreaking applications of the optimized optical trapping system for biomolecular analysis in aqueous environments, levitated cavity-optomechanics, and cold atom physics, constituting an important step towards realizing integrated bio-nanophotonics and mesoscopic quantum mechanical experiments.

Abstract:The near field coupling effect between a metallic nanostructure and a superlens has been studied numerically. It is found that the coupling effect is significant and the field distribution is altered substantially by it. This effect has a wide range of potential applications, for example using this effect in plasmonic nanostructures we can design devices with novel functionalities, such as a nanoatenna-superlens system with mismatched permittivities.
