Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR) effects have been shown as the principles of some highlysensitive sensors in recent decades. Due to the advances in nano-fabrication technology, the plasmon nano-array sensors based on SPR and LSPR phenomena have been widely used in chemical and bioloical analysis. Sensing with surface-enhanced field and sensing for refractive index changes are able to identify the analytes quantitatively and qualitatively. With the newly developed ultrasensitive plasmonic biosensors, platforms with excellent performance have been built for various biomedical applications, including point-of-care diagnosis and personalized medicine. In addition, flexible integration of plasmonics nano-arrays and combining them with electrochemical sensing have significantly enlarged the application scenarios of the plasmonic nano-array sensors, as well as improved the sensing accuracy.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) associated with metal nanostructures has developed into a highly useful sensor technique. Optical LSPR spectroscopy of nanostructures often shows sharp absorption and scattering peaks, which can be used to probe several bio-molecular interactions. Here, we report nanoplasmonic biosensors using LSPR on nanocup arrays (nanoCA) to recognize bio-molecular binding for biochemical detection. These sensors can be modified to quantify binding of small molecules to proteins for odorant and explosive detections. Electrochemical LSPR biosensors can also be designed by coupling electrochemistry and LSPR spectroscopy measurements. Multiple sensing information can be obtained and electrochemical LSPR property can be investigated for biosensors. In some applications, the electrochemical LSPR biosensor can be used to quantify immunoreactions and enzymatic activity. The biosensors exhibit better performance than those of conventional optical LSPR measurements. With multi-transducers, the nanoplasmonic biosensor can provide a promising approach for bio-detection in environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and food quality control.

Abstract:The optical trapping of Au nanoparticles with dimensions as small as 10 nm in the gap of plasmonic dipole antennas is demonstrated. Single nanoparticle trapping events are recorded in real time by monitoring the Rayleigh scattering spectra of individual plasmonic antennas. Numerical simulations are also performed to interpret the experimental results, indicating the possibility to trap nanoparticles only a few nanometers in size. This work unveils the potential associated with the integration of plasmonic trapping with localized surface plasmon resonance based sensing techniques, in order to deliver analyte to specific, highly sensitive regions ("hot spots").

Abstract:This paper presents a number of plasmonics based nanosensors that is currently being investigated in IHPC. In the first case, the influence of external magnetic field and electron on the field distribution of active semiconductor microcavity with elliptical shape is studied. It is observed that high amount of electron pumped into the elliptical microcavity demonstrate the plasmonics field distribution, which can be used to sense the change in wavelength and electron/holes densities. The second case will discuss about using plasmonics to enhance the electromagnetic wave from metallic waveguide slot. The enhancement is more than 100 times and this is important for the generation of electron-holes pair in PIN based photo-detector. The third case will discuss using the metallic nanowire to sense different surrounding materials. The small differences in the refractive index of the surrounding materials show the different plasmonics resonance frequencies.

Abstract:The manipulation of microparticles using optical forces has led to many applications in the life and physical sciences. To extend optical trapping towards the nano-regime, in this work we demonstrate trapping of single nanoparticles in arrays of plasmonic coaxial nano-apertures with various inner disk configurations and theoretically estimate the associated forces. A high normalised experimental trap stiffness of 3.50fN/nm/mW for 20nm polystyrene particles is observed for an optimum design of 149nm for the nanodisk diameter at a trapping wavelength of 980nm. Theoretical simulations are used to interpret the enhancement of the observed trap stiffness. A quick particle trapping time of less than 8sec is obtained at a concentration of 14$\times$10$^{11}$ particles/ml with low incident laser intensity of 0.59mW/$\mu$m$^{2}$. This good trapping performance with fast delivery of nanoparticles to multiple trapping sites emerges from a combination of the enhanced electromagnetic near-field and spatial temperature increase. This work has applications in nanoparticle delivery and trapping with high accuracy, and bridges the gap between optical manipulation and nanofluidics.

Abstract:Ultracold atom-traps on a chip enhances the practical application of atom traps in quantum information processing, sensing, and metrology. Plasmon mediated near-field optical potentials are promising for trapping atoms. The combination of plasmonic nanostructures and ultracold atoms has the potential to create a two dimensional array of neutral atoms with lattice spacing smaller than that of lattices created from interfering light fields -- the optical lattices. We report the design, fabrication and characterization of a nano-scale array of near-field optical traps for neutral atoms using plasmonic nanostructures. The building block of the array is a metallic nano-disc fabricated on the surface of an ITO-coated glass substrate. We numerically simulate the electromagnetic field-distribution using Finite Difference Time Domain method around the nanodisc, and calculate the intensity, optical potential and the dipole force for $^{87}$Rb atoms. The optical near-field generated from the fabricated nanostructures is experimentally characterized by using Near-field Scanning Optical Microscopy. We find that the optical potential and dipole force has all the desired characteristics to trap cold atoms when a blue-detuned light-field is used to excite the nanostructures. This trap can be used for effective trapping and manipulation of isolated atoms and also for creating a lattice of neutral atoms having sub-optical wavelength lattice spacing. Near-field measurements are affected by the influence of tip on the sub-wavelength structure. We present a deconvolution method to extract the actual near-field profile from the measured data.

Abstract:Optical manipulation has attracted remarkable interest owing to its versatile and non-invasive nature. However, conventional optical trapping remains inefficient for the nanoscopic world. The emergence of plasmonics in recent years has brought a revolutionary change in overcoming limitations due to diffraction and the requirements for high trapping laser powers. Among the near-field optical trapping cavity-based systems, Fano resonant optical tweezers have a robust trapping capability. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate sequential trapping of 20 nm particles through the use of metamaterial plasmonic optical tweezers. We investigate the multiple trapping via trap stiffness measurements for various trapping positions at low and high incident laser intensities. Our configuration could be used as a light-driven nanoscale sorting device under low laser excitation. Our results provide an alternative approach to trap multiple nanoparticles at distinct hotspots, enabling new ways to control mass transport on the nanoscale.

Abstract:We have used a gold nanohole array to trap single polystyrene nanoparticles, with a mean diameter of 30 nm, into separated hot spots located at connecting nanoslot regions. A high trap stiffness of approximately 0.85 fN/(nmmW) at a low incident laser intensity of ~0.51 mW/um2 at 980 nm was obtained. The experimental results were compared to the simulated trapping force and a reasonable match was achieved. This plasmonic array is useful for lab-on-a-chip applications and has particular appeal for trapping multiple nanoparticles with predefined separations or arranged in patterns in order to study interactions between them.

Abstract:On-chip integration of plasmonics and electronics can benefit a broad range of applications in biosensing, signal processing, and optoelectronics. A key requirement is a chip-scale manufacturing method. Here, we demonstrate a split-trench resonator platform that combines a high-quality-factor resonant plasmonic biosensor with radio frequency (RF) nanogap tweezers. The split-trench resonator can simultaneously serve as a dielectrophoretic trap and a nanoplasmonic sensor. Trapping is accomplished by applying an RF electrical bias across a 10 nm gap, thereby either attracting or repelling analytes. Trapped analytes are detected in a label-free manner using refractive-index sensing, enabled by interference between surface-plasmon standing waves in the trench and light transmitted through the gap. This active sample concentration mechanism enables detection of nanoparticles and proteins at a concentration as low as 10 pM. We can manufacture centimeter-long split-trench cavity resonators with high throughput via photolithography and atomic layer deposition, toward practical applications in biosensing, spectroscopy, and optoelectronics.
Quantifying the Role of the Surfactant and the Thermophoretic Force in Plasmonic Nano-Optical Trapping

Abstract:Plasmonic nano-tweezers use intense electric field gradients to generate optical forces able to trap nano-objects in liquids. However, part of the incident light is absorbed into the metal, and a supplementary thermophoretic force acting on the nano-object arises from the resulting temperature gradient. Plasmonic nano-tweezers thus face the challenge of disentangling the intricate contributions of the optical and thermophoretic forces. Here, we show that commonly added surfactants can unexpectedly impact the trap performance by acting on the thermophilic or thermophobic response of the nano-object. Using different surfactants in double nanohole plasmonic trapping experiments, we measure and compare the contributions of the thermophoretic and the optical forces, evidencing a trap stiffness 20x higher using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as compared to Triton X-100. This work uncovers an important mechanism in plasmonic nano-tweezers and provides guidelines to control and optimize the trap performance for different plasmonic designs.

Abstract:The volume of the object that can be manipulated in solution is continuously decreasing toward an ultimate goal of a single molecule. However, Brownian motions suppress the molecular trapping. To date, free-molecule trapping in solution has not been accomplished. Here, we develop a strategy to directly trap, investigate, and release single molecules (∼2 nm) in solution by using an adjustable plasmonic optical nanogap, which has been further applied for selective single-molecule trapping. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical simulations demonstrated that the trapping force originated from plasmonic nanomaterials. This technique opens an avenue to manipulate single molecules and other objects in the size range of primary interest for physics, chemistry, and life and material sciences without the limitations of strong bonding group, ultra-high vacuum, and ultra-low temperature, and makes possible controllable single-molecule manipulation and investigation as well as bottom-up construction of nanodevices and molecular machines.

Optical Trapping and Sensing with Plasmonic Dipole Antennas

Abstract:In this work, we study how to use a plasmonic dipole antenna as a multifunctional nanodevice for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) -based sensing and optical trapping. An analytical model is implemented to link the local electric field enhancement with the gradient forces, as well as the resonance shift caused by the presence of the analyte which can be a molecule or a nanoparticle. We find that a higher local field enhancement induces stronger trapping forces and a larger resonance wavelength shift. Experiments were also performed using plasmonic dipole antennas. Strong SERS signals were observed from the nanogap of an antenna, trapping of Au nanoparticles as small as 10 nm was achieved with a moderate laser power, and evident resonance shifts of the antenna associated with the trapping events were also observed. These results are consistent with our theoretical result that the giant field enhancement generated by a plasmonic dipole antenna also generates strong gradient forces and a high spectral sensitivity.

Abstract:Optical trapping using focused laser beams (laser tweezers) has been proven to be extremely useful for contactless manipulation of a variety of small objects, including biological cells, organelles within cells, and a wide range of other dielectric micro- and nano-objects. Colloidal metal nanoparticles have drawn increasing attention in the field of optical trapping because of their unique interactions with electromagnetic radiation, caused by surface plasmon resonance effects, enabling a large number of nano-optical applications of high current interest. Here we try to give a comprehensive overview of the field of laser trapping and manipulation of metal nanoparticles based on results reported in the recent literature. We also discuss and describe the fundamentals of optical forces in the context of plasmonic nanoparticles, including effects of polarization, optical angular momentum, and laser heating effects, as well as the various techniques that have been used to trap and manipulate metal nanoparticles. We conclude by suggesting possible directions for future research.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have extensive application prospects in high-sensitivity biosensing because of their extraordinary optical properties. However, the large size and cost of prism-based plasmonic sensors limit their commercial applications. Fortunately, the emergence of metallic nanostructured sensors has provided an effective approach to realize low-cost and highly integrated plasmonic sensors. In this review, we first assess the current status and advantages of plasmonic nanostructured sensors, then focus on our group's recent research on their miniaturization, integration, and fabrication cost reduction. Our work is of significance for the development of both plasmonic sensing theory and nanostructured sensing technology.
Substrate-mediated plasmon hybridization toward high-performance light trapping

Abstract:High-performance light trapping in metamaterials and metasurfaces offers prospects for the integration of multifunctional photonic components at subwavelength scales. However, constructing these nanodevices with reduced optical losses remains an open challenge in nanophotonics. Herein, we design and fabricate aluminum-shell-dielectric gratings by integrating low-loss aluminum materials with metal-dielectric-metal designs for high-performance light trapping featuring nearly perfect light absorption with broadband and large angular tuning ranges. The mechanism governing these phenomena is identified as the occurrence of substrate-mediated plasmon hybridization that allows energy trapping and redistribution in engineered substrates. Furthermore, we strive to develop an ultrasensitive nonlinear optical method, namely, plasmon-enhanced second-harmonic generation (PESHG), to quantify the energy transfer from metal to dielectric components. Our studies may provide a mechanism for expanding the potential of aluminum-based systems in practical applications.

Abstract:Understanding the heterogeneous distribution of the physical and chemical properties of plasmonic metal nanoparticles is fundamentally important to their basic and applied research. Traditionally, they are obtained either indirectly via bulk spectroscopic measurements plus electron microscopic characterizations or through single molecule/particle imaging of nanoparticles immobilized on planar substrates. In this study, by using light-sheet scattering microscopy with a supercontinuum white laser, highly sensitive imaging of individual metal nanoparticles (MNPs) flowing inside a capillary, driven by either pressure or electric field, was achieved for the first time. We demonstrate that single plasmonic nanoparticles with different size or chemical modification could be differentiated through their electrophoretic mobility in a few minutes. This technique could potentially be applied to high throughput characterization and evaluation of single metal nanoparticles as well as their dynamic interactions with various local environments.

Abstract:Nanophotonic traps integrated in a microfluidic channel are promising for next-generation multifunctional and flexible lab-on-chip systems, especially for researches in nanobiophotonics. Here we propose a slot waveguide with a nano-slit to produce a high gradient of optical field in a tiny space, which exhibits strong optical force to trap nanoparticles. Moreover, the slits can be cascaded along the direction of light propagation to form a large array of optical traps, with negligible reflection and loss, which is expected to be useful in study of biological nanoparticles. The trapping dynamics of nanoparticles to the proposed nanophotonic traps is analyzed, which reveals physically cascaded trapping processes enabled by the slot and the slit, respectively. The motion trajectories of the particles of 50 nm in diameter are obtained with the Brownian motion taken into account, which shows successful trapping of the nanoparticles.
