Abstract:Modal-based damage-detection algorithms were used to identify the location of defects commonly found in timber and to estimate their severities. In this study, the authors propose modifications to an existing damage-detection algorithm for locating and evaluating damage by comparing the modal strain energy before and after damage using the first two flexural modes of vibration. Experimental verification was performed on pin-pin supported timber beams by employing the algorithms with extracted modal parameters using experimental modal analysis. Single and multiple cases of damage used to simulate pocket(s) of rot with various severities were inflicted by removing sections of timber beam specimens. The proposed damage indicator, computed from the first two flexural modes, was capable of detecting all damage locations. It was also able to estimate, with reasonable accuracy, the severity of damage in term of loss of sectional moment of inertia. The modified damage index method is generally reliable in detecting the location and estimating the severity of simulated defects in timber beams.

Abstract:This paper presents a damage detection technique which uses change in Frequency Response Function (FRF) and Modal Strain Energy (MSE) for damage detection in beam and truss like structures. It’s a robust approach for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) using natural frequency for structural damage assessment. This technique couples FRF with Iterative Modal Strain Energy (IMSE) method to accurately localize and quantify the damage with only few frequencies, overcoming the limitation of mode shape based damage detection methods which requires mode shapes at full coordinates but damage is either over/underestimated. In the current approach, a damage detection algorithm is developed and validated by conducting numerical studies for a Fixed-Fixed beam, both noise-free and noise-effected cases are simulated. The numerical studies reveal that proposed algorithm is capable of identifying, localizing and quantifying the damage accurately at reduce computational cost.
Vibration-Based Damage Detection Of Cable-Stayed Bridges

Abstract:Damage in a structure alters its static and dynamic characteristics. These changes can be represented in terms of either the modal parameters or the structural parameters. Modal parameters include natural frequencies, mode shapes, and their derivatives, such as the modal curvature and modal stress energy. Structural parameters are the mass, the stiffness, the flexibility and the damping matrices of the structure. According to the properties of cable-stayed bridges, a series of damage indexes are constructed to indicate damage of cable, tower and girder respectively. A comprehensive index accounting for their interaction and the whole bridge damage is presented which is robust to measurement noises and uncertainties in ambient conditions. The sensitivities of these damage indexes are illustrated by numerical studies. The effectiveness of the proposed damage detection. method of cable-stayed bridges is demonstrated through an engineering project.

Abstract:A damage detection method for complicated beam-like structures is proposed based on the subsection strain energy method (SSEM), and its applicability condition is introduced. For a beam with the continuously varying flexural stiffness and an edge crack, the SSEM is used to detect the crack location effectively by numerical modal shapes. As a complicated beam, the glass fiber-reinforced composite model of a wind turbine blade is studied based on an experimental modal analysis. The SSEM is used to calculate the damage index from the measured modal parameters and locate the damage position in the blade model successfully. The results indicate that the SSEM based on the modal shapes can be used to detect the damages in complicated beams or beam-like structures for engineering applications.

Abstract:This paper develops and presents a technique on the identification of the damage location and depth in a beam using a frequency contour method. Unlike the frequency contour methods presented in the literature, the one presented in this work does not require neither the solving of the governing differential equation analytically to obtain the contour lines, nor the calculation of the frequencies by varying all damage severities and locations in order to use an inverse problem to plot the contours. In other words, the detection method does not require the modelling of the damage. In this work, a contour line is plotted using only the value of the changes in the measured natural frequencies and the vectors of the curvature mode shapes of the intact structure which can be calculated numerically or can be derived from the measured mode shapes. In order to verify the practical applicability of the developed theoretical method, a numerical simulation and an experimental framework on cantilever beam have been designed and the results confirm the applicability of the developed method in the real applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the experimentally measured data of two sensor systems (i.e., a surface-bonded piezoelectric sensor system and a non-contact scanning laser vibrometer (SLV) system) are studied, and three dynamics-based damage detection algorithms are evaluated. The curvature mode shapes are selected as a parameter to locate damage due to its sensitivity. The piezoelectric sensors directly acquire the curvature mode shapes of the structures, while the SLV measures the displacement mode shapes. The beam specimens are made of E-glass/epoxy composites, and several different types of damages are introduced in the beams (i.e., delaminations, impact and saw cut damage). This study provides a thorough assessment of the two sensor systems to damage detection of laminated composite beams and verify the validity of dynamics-based damage detection methodology for locating the local defects in composite structures.

Abstract:This work focuses on actively detecting damage in laminated composite structures in transverse shear mode. A 3D model of a laminated composite beam, instrumented with a piezoelectric patch (PZT) polarized in transverse shear mode along its length, is created and analyzed under various mechanical and electrical boundary conditions and for different vibration modes. Damage detection indicators for two types of laminated composite beams, presence of a crack or delamination, are processed and evaluated using parametric finite element analyses. The results indicate that the frequency-change factors FCF and FCF 2 are effective indicators of damage in laminated composite beams, with FCF 2 being the most effective. The mechanical boundary conditions have an impact on the values of the frequency-change factors, while electrical boundary conditions have little effect. It is found that also, open-circuit frequency-based damage indicators' performances are similar to short-circuit ones. The obtained results can be further used, for example, for training artificial neural networks for the quantification of the analyzed damage types.

Abstract:A newly developed damage detection method applicable to three-dimensional frame structures is presented. This method is based on decomposing the modal strain energy into two parts, one associated with element's axial coordinates and the other transverse coordinates. The method requires only a small number of mode shapes identified from damaged and undamaged structures. Numerical studies are conducted based on synthetic data generated from finite element models. This study demonstrates that the Modal Strain Energy Decomposition method is capable of localizing damage for 3-D frame structures.

Abstract:This paper provides a summary of damage detection methods to identify, locate and characterize damage in civil infrastructure systems by examining changes in measured structural responses. Research on damage detection and structural identification methods has been rapidly expanded over the past two decades. The fundamental idea behind this technology is that modal parameters (notably frequency, mode shape and damping) are related to physical properties (i.e., mass, stiffness and damping). So changes in modal properties can be used as damage indicators for structural damage detection, localization and quantification. In this paper, the methods are categorized in accordance with various criteria such as vibration based methods and local measurement based methods, signal processing based methods, model updating based methods, and baseline and non-baseline methods. Also a general description on each method is illustrated with general terms such as difficulties in implementation and level of detection, and a detailed comparison among different methods has been addressed.
Study on Damage Detection Software of Beam-Like Structures

Abstract:A simply structural damage detection software is developed to identification damage in beams. According to linear fracture mechanics theory, the localized additional flexibility in damage vicinity can be represented by a lumped parameter element. The damaged beam is modeled by wavelet-based elements to gain the first three frequencies precisely. The first three frequencies influencing functions of damage location and depth are approximated by means of surface-fitting techniques to gain damage detection database of forward problem. Then the first three measured natural frequencies are employed as inputs to solve inverse problem and the intersection of the three frequencies contour lines predict the damage location and depth. The DLL (Dynamic Linkable Library) file of damage detection method is coded by C++ and the corresponding interface of software is coded by virtual instrument software LabVIEW. Finally, the software is tested on beams and shafts in engineering. It is shown that the presented software can be used in actual engineering structures.

Abstract:Damage identification is an important and challenging issue in structural health monitoring to prevent sudden structural failures. This study introduces a novel damage detection method for beams associated with the cross-correlation function of the moving load-induced full-field displacements. Firstly, through theoretical derivation, the structural responses of a single-span beam under arbitrary boundary conditions subjected to a moving concentrated force were investigated, both before and after damage occurred. The changes in structural responses due to local stiffness damage were analyzed from a theoretical perspective. Then, a method is introduced to extract high-resolution mode shapes, which represent the true state of the structure, from the computer vision-based displacements and accelerations measured at limited locations. These mode shapes were then used for full-field displacement reconstruction, and the changes in the cross-correlation function of these reconstructed displacements were employed for damage detection. The proposed method can obtain the higher-order responses compared to the traditional vision-based methods, and the displacements at the acceleration-unmeasured locations can be improved compared to the conventional data fusion method. Finally, the proposed method was validated both in numerical simulations and experimental tests on a beam model with multiple damage scenarios. The results have demonstrated the capability of the proposed method in mode shape extraction, full-field displacement reconstruction, and damage detection.

Abstract:Long-gauge Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors have been widely employed because of their broader measuring range and higher sensitivity. However, current structural damage detection methods using macro-strain modal parameters are based on structural frequency response function or stationary power spectrum density, which are not applicable to non-stationary responses. To overcome this limitation, an improved method is proposed in this paper for structural damage detection based on structural macro-strain responses under unknown multi-point non-stationary excitations. First, a new concept of macro-strain energy spectrum transmissibility (MEST) is proposed using structural non-stationary macro-strain responses, and it is derived that MEST at a certain system pole equals the ratio of macro-strain mode shape. Then, the singular value decomposition (SVD) technique is adopted for the MEST matrix to identify structural natural frequencies and macro-strain mode shapes. Finally, two damage detection indicators are constructed based on the identified normalized macro-strain mode shape (NMMS). The first indicator is the difference in structural NMMS before and after structural damage. The second one is based on the curvatures of structural NMMS, which can be used for structures without intact baseline. Numerical verifications are conducted to identify beam-type structural damage under multi-point nonstationary excitations or vehicle loads. Five damage scenarios with different measurement noise levels are investigated, and damage detection results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Bridge is a typical periodic support structure in engineering. Because of earthquake, manufacturing error and long-term operation, supports including rubber bearing and pier can be damaged, and then stiffness and damping of supports are reduced. That essentially changes the original dynamic characteristics of the period-support bridge, and modal localization is an important feature of the dynamics due to the support quasi periodicity. The modal localization results in a large vibration displacement of local bridge, so that the damage degree and location of the bridge can be identified. It is a new and important way to identify damage of bridge supports through modal localization. In this paper, the bridge is considered as a period-support beam structure, and the modal localization features of the bridge as quasi-periodic support beam are studied. The relationship between modal localization and support damage is revealed, which provides a theoretical basis for the damage identification of bridges based on the modal localization features of quasi-periodic structures.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple Fourier spectral-based method is proposed to calculate the modal curvature (MC) of beams instead of the traditional central difference method. Based on the present method, damages in beam-like structures are localized. The present method provides an alternative selection to estimate MC in damage detection. There are two advantages of the present method. Firstly, the spectral calculation of spatial derivatives is conducted globally, which provides the suppression for noise. In addition, signal processing in the wavenumber domain provides an alternative choice for spatial filtering for mode shapes. Secondly, the proposed method provides a precise estimation of the MC which is related to original definition. With the absence of numerical derivative, the estimated results can be more stable and robust. Statistical analysis is conducted to show the effectiveness and noise immunity of the proposed method. In order to obtain the better identification, the MC calculated by the proposed method is employed as the input of continuous wavelet transform, and then the hybrid method is generated. The validations of the present method and comparison with the traditional central difference method are numerically and experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Based on the data from dynamic analysis of a 40m-span multi-box steel-concrete composite bridge and the difference value of its modal curvature before and after the structural damage, this paper detects the damage locations in steel-concrete composite bridge by modal curvature difference method (MCDM). Here we adopt the updated finite element model in last work as analytical model, taking concrete density and elastic modulus as updating parameters and modal frequency+MAC as reference data. The results indicate that the modal curvature difference method can well locate the damages in steel-concrete composite bridge, especially the damage in concrete. But the change rate of frequency as damage index is insensitive to the bridge damage and the method can’t be applied solely for practical.

Abstract:Damage detection using structural classical deflection flexibility has received considerable attention due to the unique features of the flexibility in the last two decades. However, for relatively complex structures, most methods based on classical deflection flexibility fail to locate damage sites to the exact members. In this study, for structures whose members are dominated by axial forces, such as truss structures, a more feasible flexibility for damage detection is proposed, which is called the Axial Strain (AS) flexibility. It is synthesized from measured modal frequencies and axial strain mode shapes which are expressed in terms of translational mode shapes. A damage indicator based on AS flexibility is proposed. In addition, how to integrate the AS flexibility into the Damage Location Vector (DLV) approach (Bernal and Gunes 2004) to improve its performance of damage localization is presented. The methods based on AS flexbility localize multiple damages to the exact members and they are suitable for the cases where the baseline data of the intact structure is not available. The proposed methods are demonstrated by numerical simulations of a 14-bay planar truss and a five-story steel frame and experiments on a five-story steel frame.

Abstract:A reliable and effective damage detection technique is one of the significant tools to maintain the safety and integrity of structures. A dynamic response offers viable information for the identification of damage in the structures. However, the performance of such dynamics-based damage detection depends on the quality of measured data and the effectiveness of data processing algorithms. In this article, the experimentally measured data of two sensor systems, i.e., a surface-bonded piezoelectric sensor system and a noncontact scanning laser vibrometer (SLV) system, are studied, and their effectiveness in damage identification of composite laminated beams is compared. Three dynamics-based damage detection algorithms are evaluated using the data acquired from these two measurement systems. Abstract:A damage detection method is presented for the identification and quantification of damage that leads to a change in the structure’s mass and/or stiffness properties. The proposed method requires the use of finite element to model the structure in its undamaged state as well as information on the dynamic properties such as frequencies and mode shapes of the structure in its damaged state. The technique is applicable to any structure that can be accurately modeled using the finite element method and whose frequencies and mode shapes can be reliably measured. A structure pseudo force vector derived from the residual force method is described to locate the damaged regions in the structure. A matrix condensation approach in conjunction with a proportional damage model is then employed to quantify the damage by calculating the change in stiffness and mass properties of the damaged elements in the structure. The validity of the method is demonstrated by applying it to three structures: a beam, a frame and a plate. It is shown that if the amount of damage is not excessively large, the proposed method can be used to detect damage in these structures even when the measured system dynamic properties are slightly erroneous.

Abstract:Damage detection methods using structural dynamic responses have received much attention in the past decades. For bridge and offshore structures, these methods are usually based on beam models. To ensure the successful application of these methods, it is necessary to examine the sensitivity of modal properties to structural damages. To this end, an analytic solution is presented of the modal properties of simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beams that contain a general damage with no additional assumptions. The damage can be a reduction in the bending stiffness or a loss of mass within a beam segment. This solution enables us to thoroughly discuss the sensitivities of different modal properties to various damages. It is observed that the lower natural frequencies and mode shapes do not change so much when a section of the beam is damaged, while the mode of rotation angle and curvature modes show abrupt change near the damaged region. Although similar observations have been reported previously, the analytical solution presented herein for clarifying the mechanism involved is considered a contribution to the literature. It is helpful for developing new damage detection methods for structures of the beam type.

Abstract:Three damage detection methods for multiple damaged sections in structures were investigated to improve safety monitoring of simply supported beam bridges. The flexibility difference method has disadvantages for multiple damage detection, so a flexibility curvature was developed that only requires the mode and frequency data of the first 2 or 3 modes. The feasibility and validity of the method were verified using finite element results. The frequency changing mode calculated from the sensitivity matrix was correlated with the practical frequency changing mode to develop modifications for the multiple damage location assurance criteria (MDLAC) method. The result shows that only about 10 modal frequencies are needed to predict multiple damage in structures.
