Abstract:We formulate and prove Chevalley's theorem in the setting of affine Nash groups. As a consequence, we show that the semi-direct product of two almost linear Nash groups is still an almost linear Nash group.

Abstract:Let G be an almost linear Nash group, namely, a Nash group that admits a Nash homomorphism with finite kernel to some GLk(R). A homology theory (the Schwartz homology) is established for the category of smooth Fréchet representations of G of moderate growth. Frobenius reciprocity and Shapiro's lemma are proved in this category. As an application, we give a criterion for automatic extensions of Schwartz homologies of Schwartz sections of a tempered G-vector bundle.

Abstract:Let G \mathsf G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over R \mathbb R , and let C : G → G C: \mathsf G\rightarrow \mathsf G be a fundamental Chevalley involution. We show that for every g ∈ G ( R ) g\in \mathsf G(\mathbb R) , C ( g ) C(g) is conjugate to g − 1 g^{-1} in the group G ( R ) \mathsf G(\mathbb R) . Similar result on the Lie algebras is also obtained.

Abstract:Let $G(\mathbb{Q})$ be a simply connected Chevalley group over $\mathbb{Q}$ corresponding to a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $V$ be a finite dimensional faithful highest weight $\mathfrak g$-module and let $V_\mathbb{Z}$ be a Chevalley $\mathbb{Z}$-form of $V$. Let $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$ be the subgroup of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ that preserves $V_{\mathbb{Z}}$ and let $G(\mathbb{Z})$ be the group of $\mathbb{Z}$-points of $G(\mathbb{Q})$. Then $G(\mathbb{Q})$ is \emph{integral} if $G(\mathbb{Z})=\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$. Chevalley's original work constructs a scheme-theoretic integral form of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ which equals $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$. Here we give a representation-theoretic proof of integrality of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ using only the action of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ on $V$, rather than the language of group schemes. We discuss the challenges and open problems that arise in trying to extend this to a proof of integrality for Kac-Moody groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that every automorphism of a Chevalley group (or its elementary subgroup) with root system of rank > 1 over a commutative ring (with 1/2 for the systems A2,F4,Bl,Cl ; with 1/2 and 1/3 for the system G2 ) is standard, i.e., it is a composition of ring, inner, central and graph automorphisms. This result finalizes description of automorphisms of Chevalley groups. However, the restrictions on invertible elements can be a topic of further considerations. We provide also some model-theoretic applications of this description.

Abstract:In this paper we consider Chevalley groups over commutative rings with~$1$, constructed by irreducible root systems of rank $>1$. We always suppose that for the systems $A_2, B_\ell, C_\ell, F_4, G_2$ our rings contain $1/2$ and for the system $G_2$ also $1/3$. Under these assumptions we prove that the central quotients of Chevalley groups are regularly bi-interpretable with the corresponding rings, the class of all central quotients of Chevalley groups of a given type is elementarily definable and even finitely axiomatizable (see Definition~2.2). The same holds for adjoint Chevalley groups and for bondedly generated Chevalley groups. We also give an example of Chevalley group with infinite center, which is not bi-interpretable with the corresponding ring and is elementarily equivalent to a group that is not a Chevalley group itself.

Abstract:We study the action of the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}_n})$ on the equivariant K-theory of affine Laumon spaces. We show that, at any highest weight away from the critical level, this can be identified with the contragredient dual Verma module of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}_n})$, improving earlier results of Braverman-Finkelberg and Negu{ţ}. The proof uses a variant of stable envelopes first introduce by Maulik-Okounkov in the study of Nakajima quiver varieties.

Abstract:We give a classification of connected abelian locally (real) Nash groups of dimension two. We first consider Painlevé's description of meromorphic maps admitting an Algebraic Addition Theorem and analyse the algebraic dependence of such maps. We then give a classification of connected abelian locally complex Nash groups of dimension two, from which we deduce the corresponding real classification.

Abstract:A recent development in graph theory is to study local separators, vertex sets that need not separate graphs globally but just locally. We use this idea to conjecture an extension of Stallings' theorem to finite nilpotent groups. We provide an example demonstrating that the assumption of nilpotency is necessary, and prove a stronger form of this conjecture for low connectivities, as follows.

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Abstract:In this paper, I prove the existence of a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium for a large class of games with nonconvex strategy spaces. Specifically, if each player's strategies form a compact, connected Euclidean neighborhood retract and if all best-response correspondences are null-homotopic, then the game has a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. As an application, I show how this result can prove the fundamental theorem of algebra.

Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions for two subgroups of a hierarchically hyperbolic group to generate an amalgamated free product over their intersection. The result applies in particular to certain geometric subgroups of mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces, that is, those subgroups coming from the embeddings of closed subsurfaces. In the second half of the paper, we study under which hypotheses our amalgamation procedure preserves several notions of convexity in HHS, such as hierarchical quasiconvexity (as introduced by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto) and strong quasiconvexity (every quasigeodesic with endpoints on the subset lies in a uniform neighbourhood). This answers a question of Russell, Spriano, and Tran.

Combination theorems in convex projective geometry

Abstract:We prove a general combination theorem for discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ preserving properly convex open subsets in the projective space $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, in the spirit of Klein and Maskit. We use it in particular to prove that a free product of two $(\mathbb{Z}$-)linear groups is again ($\mathbb{Z}$-)linear, and to construct Zariski-dense discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ which are not lattices but contain a lattice of a smaller higher-rank simple Lie group. We also establish a version of our combination theorem for discrete groups that are convex cocompact in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in the sense of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1704.08711" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.08711">arXiv:1704.08711</a>. In particular, we prove that a free product of two convex cocompact groups is convex cocompact, which implies that the free product of two Anosov groups is Anosov. We also prove a virtual amalgamation theorem over convex cocompact subgroups generalizing work of Baker-Cooper.

Abstract:Stallings folding theory is modified, using double coset representatives, and to applied to the study of subgroups of amalgamated products of finite rank free groups. As a first application the subgroup membership problem for such groups is shown to be decidable. An algorithm for this problem is constructed and its complexity is analysed.
