Abstract:Various query languages have been proposed to extract and restructure information in XML documents. These languages, usually claiming to be declarative, mainly consider the conjunctive relationships among data elements. In order to present the operations where the hierarchical and the disjunctive relationships need to be considered, such as restructuring hierarchy and handling heterogeneity, the programs in these languages often exhibit a procedural style and thus the declarativeness in them is not so prominent as in conventional query languages like SQL. In this paper, we propose a declarative pattern-based functional XML query language named XML Tree Query (XTQ). XTQ adopts expressive composite patterns to present data extraction, meanwhile establishing the conjunctive, the disjunctive and the hierarchical relationships among data elements. It uses the matching terms, a composite structure of the variables bound to the matched data elements, to present a global sketch of the extracted data, and develops a deductive restructuring mechanism of matching terms to indicate data transformation, especially for restructuring hierarchy and handling heterogeneity. Based on matching terms, XTQ employs a coherent approach to function declaration and invocation to consistently extract and construct composite data structure, which integrates features of conventional functional languages and pattern-based query languages. Additionally, XTQ also supports data filtering on composite data structure such as hierarchical data, which is seldom deliberately considered in other studies. We demonstrate with various examples that XTQ can declaratively present complex XML queries which are common in practice.

X2S: Translating XPath into Efficient SQL Queries

Abstract:Translating XPath into SQL queries is necessary if XML documents are stored in relational databases. Although most of the current methods can translate XPath into equivalent SQL queries, they seldom focus on the efficiency of the translated SQL queries. This paper proposes a method called X2S to handle the problem. X2S is based on the extended relational encoding, which can deal with the operators in XPath efficiently. X2S also exploits DTD to rewrite the XPath logically before the SQL translation. The goal of the rewriting is to eliminate the wildcards of the XPath, to remove the ancestor/descendant relationship and to shorten the length of the XPath. An estimation cost model is used to choose one with the lowest cost from the candidate SQL statements. The experimental results demonstrate that the SQL queries generated by X2S outperform those from other methods significantly.

Abstract:We present XSeek, a keyword search engine that enables users to easily access XML data without the need of learning XPath or XQuery and studying possibly complex data schemas. XSeek addresses a challenge in XML keyword search that has been neglected in the literature: how to determine the desired return information, analogous to inferring a "return" clause in XQuery. To infer the search semantics, XSeek recognizes possible entities and attributes in the data, differentiates search predicates and return specifications in the keywords, and generates meaningful search results based on the analysis.

Abstract:XML has become the de facto standard for data representation and exchange for Web applications, such as digital library, Web service, and electronic business. How to retrieve interesting information from the promising XML data is an active research area. Among techniques in this area, the description of query patterns is a crucial section. This paper reviews the actualities of recent researches on this topic. It classifies the query descriptors into two categories, XML Query type and XML IR type (with three subcategories: XML IR/keyword, XML IR/fragment and XML IR/query), and concludes three popular problems: Twig pattern processing, SLCA (smallest lowest common ancestor) problem, and similarity measuring techniques for retrieved XML fragments. It analyzes the virtue and deficiency of related techniques based on their convenience for common users. And hereby it proposes four issues for further XML querying researches: structural keywords and corresponding structural similarity measuring, wiping off the redundancy in XML data processing between XML Query (including XML IR/query) and XML IR/keyword, theoretical discussion of XML Query and its realization, and the management of peculiar XML data.
XCpaqs: Compression of XML Document with XPath Query Support

Abstract:Information in XML format has obvious redundancy that wastes disk space, bandwidth and disk I/O when querying XML data. For the efficiency of storage and query XML, it is necessary to compress XML data. In this paper, XCpaqs, a compression technology of XML, is presented. XCpaqs separates XML document into structure and context information. At the same time, it keeps homomorphism relation between compressed and original XML document. XCpaqs encodes tag and path respectively. It makes parts of XPath query could be processed in main memory. XCpaqs can recognize data types and uses different encode strategy to compress data with different type. This feature makes the technology support XML documents without schema information. Therefore, XCpaqs is adaptive for XML warehouse, which stores XML documents gathered from internet with various schemas. The technology of query execution on XML data compressed by XCpaqs is also presented.

Abstract:The popularity of XML in WWW calls for further research on query optimization for XML documents. In this paper, we introduce a universal indexing technique for XML documents based on DOM API and the XQuery Language. Then the design of a new kind of path indexing technique is presented, not only notably reducing the cost of query processing and facilitating its building and maintenance which would be provided later in this paper but also contributes to cost model and query visualization. Finally, we conclude the paper and address the future work.

Abstract:XML is an important format of information exchange and representation. One of its features is that it has tag representing semantics. Based on this feature, an extensive aggregation of operation of XML data, Xaggregation, is represented in this paper. Xaggregation permits XPath expression decorating dimension property and measure property. With Xaggregation, statistics of XML data becomes more flexible with function of aggregating heterogeneous data and hierarchy data along some path of XML. Xaggregation could be embedded in query language of XML such as XQuery. In this paper, the definition of Xaggregation is presented, as well as the semantics and application of it. Implementation of Xaggregation based on native XML database with XML as tree structure is also designed.

Abstract:Keyword search is an effective approach for most users to search for information because they do not need to learn complex query languages,or know the underlying structures of the data.This paper focuses on keyword search in XML documents.It first points out the definition of the result set based on SLCA is not complete and then defines the result set of XML keyword search based on XLCA,which can include all the possible results.Based on such definition,it presents a compact index structure and the corresponding search algorithm.Two search methods have been implemented and the experiments demonstrate the benefits of our method over previously proposed methods.

Abstract:XML is an important standard of data exchange and representation. XML database also becomes important as web database. As a mature database system, using relational database to support XML data may bring some advantages. In this paper, based on a relational storage structure support XPath query effectively, an optimized query translation strategy is presented as well as optimization techniques. This method converts XQuery to variable forest. Optimization operations are applied on the variable forest. The optimization is based on the semantics of XML document such as schema of original XML document. The VF can be converted to SQL easily. This method translates XQuery to a set of SQL statements and generates final result through the result of them. Our method adapts to the XML database with relational storage supporting effective query process to XML documents with various schemas and size.

Abstract:When data sources are virtually integrated, there is no common and centralized method to maintain global consistency, so inconsistencies with regard to global integrity constraints are very likely to occur. In this paper, we consider the problem of defining and computing consistent query answers when queries are posed to virtual XML data integration systems, which are specified following the local-as-view approach. We propose a powerful XML constraint model to define global constraints, which can express keys and functional dependencies, and which also extends the newly introduced conditional functional dependencies to XML. We provide an approach to defining XML views, which supports not only edge-path mappings but also data-value bindings to express the join operator. We give formal definitions of repair and consistent query answers with the XML data integration settings. Given a query on the global system, we present a two-step method to compute consistent query answers. First, the given query is transformed using the global constraints, such that to run the transformed query on the original global system will generate exactly the consistent query answers. Because the global instance is not materialized, the query on the global instance is then rewritten in the form of queries on the underlying data sources by reversing rules in view definitions. We illustrate that the XPath query transformations can be implemented in XQuery. Finally, we implement prototypes of our method and evaluate our algorithms in the experiments.

Abstract:We consider the problem of using query transformation to compute consistent answers when queries are posed to virtual XML data integration systems, which are specified following the local-as-view approach. This is achieved in two steps. First the given query is transformed to a new query with global constraints considered, then the new query is rewritten to queries on the underlying data sources by reversing rules in view definitions. The XPath query on the global system can be transformed in XQuery. We implement prototypes of our method, and evaluate our framework and algorithms in the experiment.

Abstract:Many big data applications such as smart transportation, healthcare, and e-commerce need to store and query large collections of small XML documents, which has become a fundamental problem. However, existing solutions are inadequate to deliver satisfactory query performance in such circumstances. In this paper, we propose a framework named XML2HBase to address this problem using HBase, a widely deployed NoSQL database. Within this framework, we design a novel encoding scheme called Pathed-Dewey Order and a two-layer mapping method to store XML documents in HBase tables. XML queries, which are represented as XPath expressions, are evaluated through their translation into queries over HBase tables. Based on an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the proposed approach, we design and integrate four optimization strategies to reduce storage space and query response time. Extensive experiments on two well-known XML benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of XML2HBase over three state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:For keyword search on XML data, traditionally, a list of query results in the form of subtrees will be returned to users. However, we find that it is still not sufficient to meet users' information needs because: (1) the search intention of a certain keyword query varies from person to person; (2) amongst the query results, they may have sibling or containment relationships (in the context of whole XML database), which could be important for users to digest the query results and should be shown to users. Therefore, we try to equip the traditional XML keyword search engine with our new exploration model XMAP, providing user an interactive yet novel way to explore the results with better user experience.

Abstract:With the prevalence of XML, XML query processing becomes a hot topic. Most techniques available now are generic to XML documents that are completely schema-less or adhere to only one DTD. In this paper, we propose MXI, a XML indexing method that supports efficient path query of XML documents in both single- and multi-DTD settings. The main feature of MXI is to take advantage of information embedded in DTD for speeding up the process of XML path query. A path expression with one predicate restriction needs only zero or two structural join operations per XML document. For a path expression that is not complying with any paths in XML documents to be searched, MXI can give a judgment of no answer in much shorter time than those of indexing methods available now. We detail our techniques and key algorithms and demonstrate the superiority of MXI in path query efficiency over Lore, XISS and SphinX via experimental results.

Abstract:Stream-based continuous query processing fits a large class of new applications, such as sensor networks, location tracking, network management and financial data analysis. In this paper, we propose an efficient system called LeoXSS that processes complex twig patterns with OR-predicates and AND-predicates over XML document streams. In LeoXSS, a set of twig patterns is processed in a single document-order pass over the input document stream avoiding the post-processing of nested paths.
