Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are categorized as either mobile or fixed crystals, depending on chain mobility in the crystalline region. In this work, we investigate molecular dynamics and phase structure in the cocrystal consisting of fixed and mobile polymer crystals by solid-state (ss) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that (i) the mobile component begins large amplitude motions associated with crystal-crystal transition, while fixed ones keep their rigidity in the cocrystal, and (ii) asymmetric molecular dynamics leads to nanosegregations into mobile- and fixed-rich domains in the cocrystal below the melting temperature (Tm). The observed phase separation induced by asymmetric molecular dynamics is similar to the phase separation of the miscible amorphous polymer blend; however, it is limited to two dimensions due to the parallel packing of the stems inside the cocrystal, as well as chain connectivity at the crystalline-amorphous boundary.

Abstract:A common problem in the application of normal coordinate analysis to study low-frequency modes of large molecular systems is the occurrence of a large number of negative eigenvalues (unstable modes). By averaging the terms of the Hessian matrix over a short classical trajectory, the unstable modes were found to be completely eliminated for 6000 atom model polymer particles and crystals. The time-averaged matrices were made possible by an efficient analytical formulation of the Cartesian second derivatives and diagonalization was achieved using a sparse matrix solver (ARPACK). Abstract:Normal coordinate analysis is an important tool in studying the structure, dynamics, and physical properties of polymer systems. In this article the capabilities of normal coordinate analysis (NCA) are explored in some detail. The use of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors from NCA is catalogued for a wide variety of purposes: for assigning or interpreting polymer spectra, for structural determination, for constructing force fields, for computing heat capacity and other thermodynamic properties, and for computing other physical properties. Examples are given for crystals, melts, and amorphous systems. Also described are methods for characterizing the normal mode vectors that are especially useful for larger systems, in which a large amount of data must be analyzed or where visualization or animation fails. Finally, a recently developed method for eliminating negative eigenvalues in systems with tens of thousands of atoms, trajectory averaging, is presented. Also described are several advances in numerical linear algebra for speeding up the diagonalization phase and for computing physical properties without requiring full diagonalization of the Hessian matrix.

Abstract:Cylindrical diblock copolymer/anisotropic nanorod composites under equilibrium and nonquilibrium conditions, have been modeled and simulated using dissipative particle dynamics. The aim of our present study is to understand how the anisotropic NRs affect the equilibrium self-assembled structure of diblock copolymers (DBCPs) melts and how the shear flow induces the dynamic behaviors of DBCPs/NRs composites, especially the orientation and distribution of NRs in diblock matrix. We consider two different shear directions categorized with respect to the flow velocity parallel or perpendicular to the orientation of initial structures, which are defined as z-axis shear flow and x-axis shear flow, respectively. Our results show the shear flow not only aligns the orientation of DBCPs template and the dispersed NRs toward the flow direction, but also regulates the orientational and positional order of NRs. The final self-assembly behaviors of DBCPs/NRs nanocomposites is determined by the interplay between shear-induced polymer thinning and NRs dispersion. This work provides us a viable strategy for creating polymer nanocomposites with tunable and enhanced processing properties.

Abstract:The structures composed of individual polymer nanoparticles are simulated using a molecular dynamics technique. Structures composed of model polyethylene particles consisting of between 3000 and 24,000 monomer units are paired into dimers in a molecular dynamics simulation. The vibrational motion of the polymer particle structures corresponding to the stretching vibration between particles is studied using the time averaged normal coordinate analysis method. The data are fit to an empirical formula based on the expected scaling of the force constants with the surface contact area, yielding a formula which could be extrapolated to large particle structures which can be experimentally generated.
Diffusion Control of Homogeneous Crystallization in Nanoconfined Domains of Block Copolymers

Abstract:Confined crystallization in a poly(oxyethylene)-b-poly(oxybutylene)/poly(oxybutylene) blend (E115B103/B-28, phi(E) = 0.14) with bcc morphology and in a polystyrene-b-poly (oxyethylene)-b-polystyrene (S-E-S) triblock copolymer (S40E136S40, phi(E) = 0.407) with lamellar morphology was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Two types of confined crystallization with different characteristic Avrami exponents were identified in both systems. At higher crystallization temperature (T-c), the Avrami exponent is 1.0 and the overall crystallization rate is controlled by the homogeneous nucleation rate. At lower T-c the Avrami exponent is 0.5, which is attributed to diffusion-controlled confined crystallization. This shows that diffusion has a great influence on the overall crystallization rate when chain mobility is reduced, which can be caused either by lower T-c or by constrained microstructure.

Abstract:It has been recently shown that the phase space trajectories for the anomalous dynamics of a tagged monomer of a polymer --- for single polymeric systems such as phantom Rouse, self-avoiding Rouse, Zimm, reptation, and translocation through a narrow pore in a membrane; as well as for many-polymeric system such as polymer melts in the entangled regime --- is robustly described by the Generalized Langevin Equation (GLE). Here I show that the probability distribution of phase space trajectories for all these classical anomalous dynamics for single polymers is that of a fractional Brownian motion (fBm), while the dynamics for polymer melts between the entangled regime and the eventual diffusive regime exhibits small, but systematic deviations from that of a fBm.

Abstract:A parallel algorithm designed for widely used distributed computer clusters is developed for the real-space self-consistent-field theory for polymers. We adopt an efficient data partition method to ensure high performance of this parallel algorithm on clusters, which enables us to explore unknown phase structures of complex block polymers with high accuracy and efficiency. As a benchmark test, the algorithm is applied to an ABC linear triblock copolymer, in which the volume fractions of the two end blocks of the polymer chain are equal (f_(A)=f_(C)) , to simplify the discussion. The three-dimensional microphases and phase diagram of this triblock copolymer are investigated in detail.

Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers constitute some of the most widely used materials in the world, and their functional properties are intimately connected to their structure on a range of length scales. Many of these properties depend on the micro- and nanoscale heterogeneous distribution of crystalline and amorphous phases, but this renders the interpretation of ensemble averaged measurements challenging. We use superlocalized widefield single-particle tracking in conjunction with AFM phase imaging to correlate the crystalline morphology of lithium-triflate-doped poly(ethylene oxide) thin films to the motion of individual fluorescent probes at the nanoscale. The results demonstrate that probe motion is intrinsically isotropic in amorphous regions and that, without altering this intrinsic diffusivity, closely spaced, often parallel, crystallite fibers anisotropically constrain probe motion along intercalating amorphous channels. This constraint is emphasized by the agreement between crystallite and anisotropic probe trajectory orientations. This constraint is also emphasized by the extent of the trajectory confinement correlated to the width of the measured gaps between adjacent crystallites. This study illustrates with direct nanoscale correlations how controlled and periodic arrangement of crystalline domains is a promising design principle for mass transport in semicrystalline polymer materials without compromising their mechanical stability.
Decoding polymer self-dynamics using a two-step approach

Abstract:The self-correlation function and corresponding self-intermediate scattering function in Fourier space are important quantities for describing the molecular motions of liquids. This work draws attention to a largely overlooked issue concerning the analysis of these space-time density-density correlation functions of polymers. We show that the interpretation of non-Gaussian behavior of polymers is generally complicated by intrachain averaging of distinct self-dynamics of different segments. By the very nature of the mathematics involved, the averaging process not only conceals critical dynamical information, but also contributes to the observed non-Gaussian dynamics. To fully expose this issue and provide a thorough benchmark of polymer self-dynamics, we perform analyses of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of linear and ring polymer melts as well as several theoretical models using a "two-step" approach, where interchain and intrachain averagings of segmental self-dynamics are separated. While past investigations primarily focused on the average behavior, our results indicate that a more nuanced approach to polymer self-dynamics is clearly required.
Chain trajectories, domain shapes and terminal boundaries in block copolymers

Abstract:The packing geometry of macromolecules in complex mesophases is of key importance to self-organization in synthetic and biological soft materials. While approximate or heuristic models rely on often-untested assumptions about how flexible molecules "fit in" to distinct locations of complex assemblies, physical assemblies derive from ensembles of fluctuating conformations, obscuring the connection between mesophase geometry and the underlying arrangements. Here, we present an approach to extract and analyze features of molecular packing in diblock block copolymer (BCP) melts, a prototypical soft matter system, based on the statistical description of chain conformations in self-consistent field (SCF) theory. We show how average BCP chain trajectories in ordered morphologies can be analyzed from the SCF-derived orientational order parameter of chain segments. We use these extracted trajectories to analyze the features of local packing geometry, including chain bending and tilt, as well as the terminal boundaries that delineate distinct domains in ordered BCP morphologies. We illustrate this analysis by focusing on measurable features of packing frustration in 2D (columnar) and 3D (spherical and bicontinuous) morphologies, notably establishing an explicit link between chain conformations in complex morphologies and their medial geometry.

Exponential Time Differencing Methods with Chebyshev Collocation for Polymers Confined by Interacting Surfaces.

Abstract:We present a fast and accurate numerical method for the self-consistent field theory calculations of confined polymer systems. It introduces an exponential time differencing method (ETDRK4) based on Chebyshev collocation, which exhibits fourth-order accuracy in temporal domain and spectral accuracy in spatial domain, to solve the modified diffusion equations. Similar to the approach proposed by Hur et al. [Macromolecules 45, 2905 (2012)], non-periodic boundary conditions are adopted to model the confining walls with or without preferential interactions with polymer species, avoiding the use of surface field terms and the mask technique in a conventional approach. The performance of ETDRK4 is examined in comparison with the operator splitting methods with either Fourier collocation or Chebyshev collocation. Numerical experiments show that our exponential time differencing method is more efficient than the operator splitting methods in high accuracy calculations. This method has been applied to diblock copolymers confined by two parallel flat surfaces.

Abstract:Theories of interpreting polymer physics and rheology at the molecular level from experiments, including small-angle scattering, typically rely on the assumption that polymer chains possess a Gaussian configuration distribution. This assumption frequently fails to describe features of real polymer molecules both at equilibrium (when polymers have nonlinear topology or heterogeneous chemistry) and out of equilibrium (when they are subjected to nonlinear deformations). To better describe non-Gaussian polymer conformation distributions, we propose a moments analysis based on the Gram-Charlier expansion as a natural framework for describing structure and scattering from non-Gaussian polymers. The expansion describes the conformation distribution in terms of cumulants (equivalent to moments of the distribution) of the underlying segment density distribution function, providing low-dimensional descriptors that can be inferred directly from measured scattering in a way that is agnostic to a polymer's topology, chemistry, or state of deformation. We use this framework to show that cumulants can be used to "fingerprint" non-Gaussian conformation distributions of polymers either at equilibrium (applied to sequence-defined heteropolymers) or out of equilibrium (applied to polymers experiencing nonlinear deformation due to flow). We anticipate that this new analysis method will provide a general framework for examining nonideal polymer configurations and the properties that arise from them.

Abstract:The thickness of transition layer of crystal polymer is generally calculated by one dimensional electron density correlation function. If the transition layer of crystal polymer is diffusive, corrected Porod's law is an effective method to deal with diffuse transition layer of pseudo two-phase material. The method of Porod's law is used to compute the thickness of transition layer of crystal polymer and compared with the result of correlation function method. The conclusion is that two methods obtain identical thickness of transition layer.

Abstract:In this paper, we combine variable cell shape method with dynamic self-consistent field theory and extend to study structure and dynamics under shear for triblock copolymer melts. Due to shear, the calculation cell shape is variable and no longer orthogonal. Pseudospectral method is employed to solve the diffusion equation for chain propagator on the nonorthogonal coordinate and the shear periodical condition can be easily designed in terms of the variable cell shape method. By using this strategy, the shear induced morphology evolution is investigated for topologically complex polymeric systems such as linear and star triblock copolymers; the morphology of linear ABC triblock copolymers is more shear sensitive than that of star triblocks. In particular, once the chain propagator is obtained, the microscopic elastic stress and spatial stress distribution can be derived and thus the dynamic mechanical property can be calculated under shear. By imitating the dynamic storage modulus G(') corresponding to any given morphology in the oscillatory shear measurements, we explore the relationship between the morphology and the storage modulus G(') and extend to study the mechanism of phase separation dynamics as well as order-disorder transition (ODT) for linear and star triblock copolymers. The results show that the chain architecture can be easily distinguished by investigating the ODT, though the systems such as AB symmetric diblock and ABA triblock copolymers by coupling AB precursors almost exhibit similar microstructures. In addition, the storage modulus G(') and loss modulus G(') can be simultaneously determined in frequency sweeps of oscillatory shear measurements and the dependence of the moduli on phase separated patterns and the chain topology is investigated. The simulation findings are in qualitatively agreement with the experimental results.
Elucidating fluctuating diffusivity in center-of-mass motion of polymer models with time-averaged mean-square-displacement tensor

Abstract:There have been increasing reports that the diffusion coefficient of macromolecules depends on time and fluctuates randomly. Here a method is developed to elucidate this fluctuating diffusivity from trajectory data. Time-averaged mean-square displacement (MSD), a common tool in single-particle-tracking (SPT) experiments, is generalized to a second-order tensor with which both magnitude and orientation fluctuations of the diffusivity can be clearly detected. This method is used to analyze the center-of-mass motion of four fundamental polymer models: the Rouse model, the Zimm model, a reptation model, and a rigid rodlike polymer. It is found that these models exhibit distinctly different types of magnitude and orientation fluctuations of diffusivity. This is an advantage of the present method over previous ones, such as the ergodicity-breaking parameter and a non-Gaussian parameter, because with either of these parameters it is difficult to distinguish the dynamics of the four polymer models. Also, the present method of a time-averaged MSD tensor could be used to analyze trajectory data obtained in SPT experiments.
Nucleation Rate Calculation for the Phase Transition of Diblock Copolymers under Stochastic Cahn-Hilliard Dynamics

Abstract:We focus on the nucleation rate calculation for diblock copolymers by studying the two-dimensional stochastic Cahn-Hilliard dynamics with a Landau-Brazovskii energy functional. To do this, we devise the string method to compute the minimal energy path of nucleation events and the gentlest ascent dynamics to locate the saddle point on the path in Fourier space. Both methods are combined with the semi-implicit spectral method and hence are very effective. We derive the nucleation rate formula in the infinite-dimensional case and prove the convergence under numerical discretizations. The computation of the determinant ratio is also discussed for obtaining the rate. The algorithm is successfully applied to investigate the nucleation from the lamellar phase to the cylinder phase in the mean field theory for diblock copolymer melts. The comparison with projected stochastic Allen-Cahn dynamics is also discussed.

Abstract:Understanding the transport of driven nano- and micro-particles in complex fluids is of relevance for many biological and technological applications. Here we perform hydrodynamic multiparticle collision dynamics simulations of spherical and elongated particles driven through polymeric fluids containing different concentrations of polymers. We determine the mean particle velocities which are larger than expected from Stokes law for all particle shapes and polymer densities. Furthermore we measure the fluid flow fields and local polymer density and polymer conformation around the particles. We find that polymer-depleted regions close to the particles are responsible for an apparent tangential slip velocity which accounts for the measured flow fields and transport velocities. A simple two-layer fluid model gives a good match to the simulation results.

High-accurate and efficient numerical algorithms for the self-consistent field theory of liquid-crystalline polymers

Abstract:Self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is one of the most widely-used framework in studying the equilibrium phase behaviors of inhomogenous polymers. For liquid crystalline polymeric systems, the main numerical challenges of solving SCFT encompass efficiently solving plenty of six dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs), precisely determining the subtle energy difference among self-assembled structures, and developing effective iterative methods for nonlinear SCF iteration. To address these challenges, this work introduces a suite of high-order and efficient numerical methods tailored for SCFT of liquid-crystalline polymers. These methods include various advaced PDE solvers, an improved Anderson iteration algorithm to accelerate SCFT calculations, and an optimization technique of adjusting the computational domain during the SCF iterations. Extensive numerical tests demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods. Based on these algorithms, we further explore the self-assembly behavior of liquid crystalline polymers through simulations in four, five, and six dimensions, uncovering intricate three-dimensional spatial structures.
