Abstract:We report a molecular dynamics model of the amorphous regions of polyethylene oxide for use in study of the ionic transport mechanisms in this polymer when it is used as an electrolyte in batteries. The model is produced by beginning with a molecular dynamics of dimethyl ether which we have reported earlier and ''polymerizing'' it computationally by successively choosing pairs of unbonded methyl groups and changing the forces to describe the chemical bond in the polymer, This is not intended to be a fully realistic simulation of the actual chemical polymerization process, but we argue that it produces a useful model of a sample of the amorphous polymer. We report structural and dynamical properties of the resulting model, in which we have adopted torsion forces reported by Krimm and coworkers to fit the observed vibrational spectrum. Abstract:In this work, the thermal pyrolysis process and produced chemical defects of crystalline polyethylene, taking the effects of oxygen into account, are explored by molecular dynamics simulation based on ReaxFF force field. The trap energies and sites of various types of chemical defects are calculated by density function theory (DFT), in which hybrid functional XC HSE06 is adopted. The results indicate that double bond CC, conjugate double bond CC-CC, CCC and carbonyl CO are the main products during thermal aging, and these defects are easier to formed at the breaking points of carbon backbone, which is different from the geometries generally used in the previous DFT computations. For electrons, chemical defects CO and C-CC-C at breaking points (BP) produce relative deep traps 1.810 and 1.054 eV, and CC at BP shows shallower traps with energy of 0.445 eV. For holes, CC-CC at BP and CC in the backbone generate deep traps 1.614 and 1.119 eV, and CC at BP presents shallower traps with energy of 0.689 eV.

Abstract:The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in liquid paraffin (LP) systems was investigated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement. The influence of UHMWPE concentration and cooling rate on crystallization mechanism and spherulitc structure as implied by the modified Avrami equation and Mo's analysis was determined, whereas the Ozawa's approach fails to describe the crystallization behaviors of these UHMWPE-diluent systems. As a result, in the modified Avrami analysis, it was found that the Avrami exponent is constant around five at various concentrations of UHMWPE and cooling rates. Further, the value of F(T) in the Mo's approach increases with the increasing of relative crystallinity and UHMWPE content in the blends. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics presented here are the first for UHMWPE-diluent systems. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Research on the thermal conduction in a single polymer chain is significant for the improvement of the thermal property of bulk polymer materials. We calculate the thermal conductivity of a single polyethylene (PE) chain by using both the Green-Kubo approach and a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation method. The results suggest that the thermal conductivity of an individual polymer chain is very high although bulk PE is a thermal insulator, even divergent in our case. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of PE chains is observed to increase with the chain length.

Abstract:The thermal transport properties of oriented polymers are of fundamental and practical interest. High thermal conductivities ($\gtrsim 50$ Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$) have recently been reported in disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films, considerably exceeding prior reported values for oriented films. However, conflicting explanations have been proposed for the microscopic origin of the high thermal conductivity. Here, we report a characterization of the thermal conductivity and mean free path accumulation function of disentangled UHMWPE films (draw ratio $\sim 200$) using cryogenic steady-state thermal conductivity measurements and transient grating spectroscopy. We observe a marked dependence of the thermal conductivity on grating period over temperatures from 30 - 300 K. Considering this observation, cryogenic bulk thermal conductivity measurements, and analysis using an anisotropic Debye model, we conclude that longitudinal atomic vibrations with mean free paths around 400 nanometers are the primary heat carriers and that the high thermal conductivity for draw ratio $\gtrsim 150$ arises from the enlargement of extended crystals with drawing. The mean free paths appear to remain limited by the extended crystal dimensions, suggesting that the upper limit of thermal conductivity of disentangled UHMWPE films has not yet been realized.

Crystalline Polymers with Exceptionally Low Thermal Conductivity Studied using Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:Semi-crystalline polymers have been shown to have greatly increased thermal conductivity compared to amorphous bulk polymers due to effective heat conduction along the covalent bonds of the backbone. However, the mechanisms governing the intrinsic thermal conductivity of polymers remain largely unexplored as thermal transport has been studied in relatively few polymers. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study heat transport in polynorbornene, a polymer that can be synthesized in semi-crystalline form using solution processing. We find that even perfectly crystalline polynorbornene has an exceptionally low thermal conductivity near the amorphous limit due to extremely strong anharmonic scattering. Our calculations show that this scattering is sufficiently strong to prevent the formation of propagating phonons, with heat being instead carried by non-propagating, delocalized vibrational modes known as diffusons. Our results demonstrate a mechanism for achieving intrinsically low thermal conductivity even in crystalline polymers that may be useful for organic thermoelectrics.

Abstract:Thermoelectric polymers should be electron-crystal and phonon-glass to efficiently interconvert heat and electricity. Herein, by using molecular dynamics simulations, it is demonstrated that engineering phonon transport in conducting polymers by tailoring its degree of polymerization can effectively improve the energy conversion efficiency. This is based on the separated length scales that charge carriers and phonons travel along the polymer backbone. By tuning the chain length and the crystallinity of chain-oriented poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) fibers, a dramatic decrease of the axial thermal conductivity to 0.97 W m(-1) K-1 has been observed in rationally designed polymer fibers with the crystallinity of 0.49 and the relative molecular weight of 5600. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit at 298 K has been enhanced to 0.48, which is approximately one order of magnitude higher than that in crystalline polymers.
Orthorhombic Phase of Crystalline Polyethylene: A Monte Carlo Study

Abstract:In this paper we present a classical Monte Carlo simulation of the orthorhombic phase of crystalline polyethylene, using an explicit atom force field with unconstrained bond lengths and angles and periodic boundary conditions. We used a recently developed algorithm which apart from standard Metropolis local moves employs also global moves consisting of displacements of the center of mass of the whole chains in all three spatial directions as well as rotations of the chains around an axis parallel to the crystallographic c-direction. Our simulations are performed in the NpT ensemble, at zero pressure, and extend over the whole range of temperatures in which the orthorhombic phase is experimentally known to be stable (10 - 450 K). In order to investigate the finite-size effects in this extremely anisotropic crystal, we used different system sizes and different chain lengths, ranging from C_12 to C_96 chains, the total number of atoms in the super-cell being between 432 and 3456. We show here the results for structural parameters, such as the orthorhombic cell parameters a,b,c, and the setting angle of the chains, as well as internal parameters of the chains, such as the bond lengths and angles. Among thermodynamic quantities, we present results for thermal expansion coefficients, elastic constants and specific heat. We discuss the temperature dependence of the measured quantities as well as the related finite-size effects. In case of lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficients, we compare our results to those obtained from other theoretical approaches as well as to some available experimental data. We also suggest some possible ways of extending this study.

Abstract:Polymer blends consisting of two or more polymers are important for a wide variety of industries and processes, but, the precise mechanism of their thermomechanical behaviour is incompletely understood. In order to understand clearly, it is essential to determine the miscibility and interactions between the components in polymer blend and its macroscopic thermomechanical properties. In this study, we performed experiments on SEBS and isotactic PP blends (SP) as well as molecular dynamics simulations, aiming to know the role played by molecular interactions on the thermomechanical properties. To investigate the glass transition temperature (Tg) of SEBS, PP and their blends at different ratio, the unit cell of the polymer molecular structure of each was established. The LAMMPS molecular dynamics method was used to predict the density, specific volume, free volume, enthalpy, kinetic energy, potential energy and bond energy. The (Tg) s of the SEBS, PP and SP blends were predicted by analysing these properties. Interestingly, the simulated values of the Tg of SEBS, PP and their blends showed good agreement with our experimental results obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). This technique used in this work can be used in studying glass transition of other complex polymer blends.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are promising materials for thermoelectric applications, however, at present few effective and well understood strategies exist to further advance their thermoelectric performance. Here we report a new model system for better understanding the key factors governing their thermoelectric properties: aligned, ribbon‐phase poly[2,5‐bis(3‐dodecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene] (PBTTT) doped by ion‐exchange doping. Using a range of microstructural and spectroscopic methods we study the effect of controlled incorporation of tie‐chains between the crystalline domains through blending of high and low molecular weight chains. The tie chains provide efficient transport pathways between crystalline domains and lead to significantly enhanced electrical conductivity of 4810.1 S/cm, that is not accompanied by a reduction in Seebeck coefficient nor a large increase in thermal conductivity. We demonstrate respectable power factors of 172.6 μW m−1 K−2 in this model system. Our approach is generally applicable to a wide range of semicrystalline conjugated polymers and could provide an effective pathway for further enhancing their thermoelectric properties and overcome traditional trade‐offs in optimization of thermoelectric performance. Anisotropic Thermal Transport in Organic Molecular Crystals from Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to study the anisotropic thermal transport in pentacene crystal. At 300 K, a thermal conductivity of 0.72, 1.1, and 0.61 W/mK is obtained in the direction of reciprocal lattice vectors a*, b*, and c*, respectively, in a perfect crystal with the general Amber force field. The performance of the OPLS-UA force field is also examined, which tends to underestimate the thermal conductivity. Effects of isotopic substitutions and vacancies on the thermal conduction are investigated, and it is found that the conductivity decreases rapidly with the vacancy concentration. Our investigations suggest that classical simulations with well chosen force fields may provide reasonable predictions for the thermal transport properties of organic solids. Such predictions are critical in the determination of thermoelectric figure of merit of materials.

Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers constitute some of the most widely used materials in the world, and their functional properties are intimately connected to their structure on a range of length scales. Many of these properties depend on the micro- and nanoscale heterogeneous distribution of crystalline and amorphous phases, but this renders the interpretation of ensemble averaged measurements challenging. We use superlocalized widefield single-particle tracking in conjunction with AFM phase imaging to correlate the crystalline morphology of lithium-triflate-doped poly(ethylene oxide) thin films to the motion of individual fluorescent probes at the nanoscale. The results demonstrate that probe motion is intrinsically isotropic in amorphous regions and that, without altering this intrinsic diffusivity, closely spaced, often parallel, crystallite fibers anisotropically constrain probe motion along intercalating amorphous channels. This constraint is emphasized by the agreement between crystallite and anisotropic probe trajectory orientations. This constraint is also emphasized by the extent of the trajectory confinement correlated to the width of the measured gaps between adjacent crystallites. This study illustrates with direct nanoscale correlations how controlled and periodic arrangement of crystalline domains is a promising design principle for mass transport in semicrystalline polymer materials without compromising their mechanical stability.
Mechanisms of Shock Dissipation in Semicrystalline Polyethylene

Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are lightweight, multiphase materials that exhibit attractive shock dissipation characteristics and have potential applications as protective armor for people and equipment. For shocks of 10 GPa or less, we analyzed various mechanisms for the storage and dissipation of shock wave energy in a realistic, united atom (UA) model of semicrystalline polyethylene. Systems characterized by different levels of crystallinity were simulated using equilibrium molecular dynamics with a Hugoniostat to ensure that the resulting states conform to the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. To determine the role of structural rearrangements, order parameters and configuration time series were collected during the course of the shock simulations. We conclude that the major mechanisms responsible for the storage and dissipation of shock energy in semicrystalline polyethylene are those associated with plastic deformation and melting of the crystalline domain. For this UA model, plastic deformation occurs primarily through fine crystallographic slip and the formation of kink bands, whose long period decreases with increasing shock pressure.

Abstract:The confined interaction is important to understand the melting and crystallization of polymers within single-wall carbon tube (SWNT). However, it is difficult for us to observe this interaction. In the current work, the structures and behaviors of melting and crystallization for polyethylene (PE) clusters confined in armchair single-walled carbon nanotubes ((n,n)-SWNTs) are investigated and examined based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The nonbonded energies, structures, Lindemman indices, radial density distributions, and diffusion coefficients are used to demonstrate the features of melting phase transition for PE clusters confined in (n,n)-SWNTs. The chain end-to-end distance (Rn) and chain end-to-end distribution are used to examine the flexibility of the PE chain confined in SWNT. The global orientational order parameter (P2) is employed to reveal the order degree of whole PE polymer. The effect of polymerization degree on melting temperature and the influence of SWNT chirality on structure of PE cluster are examined and discussed. Results demonstrate that within the confined environment of SWNT, PE clusters adopt novel co-axial crystalline layer structure, in which parallel chains of each layer are approximately vertical to tube axis. The disordered-ordered transformation of PE chains in each layer is an important structural feature for crystallization of confined PE clusters. SWNTs have a considerable effect on the structures and stabilities of the confined PE clusters.

Abstract:Stretched polyethylene(PE) fibers are found to have super high thermal conductivity, while the bulk of polyethylene is usually thermal insulating even for those with high crystalline degree. A molecular dynamic simulation is deliberately carried out to examine the relationship between chain configuration and thermal conductivity of polyethylene. In this simulation study, independent and interacting PE chains being stretched are compared with the aim to find out the effect of stretching on thermal conductivity of PE. Various crystallization conditions for PE bulk are considered. It is found that heat transports predominately along the covalent chain rather than across chains in PE crystals. Our simulation study helps to understand experimental findings on thermal conductivity of PE at different states. We also predict that amorphous PE may be super thermally conductive if chains are strictly stretched along heat flux.
