Abstract:Biomedical polymers have been extensively developed for promising applications in a lot of biomedical fields, such as therapeutic medicine delivery, disease detection and diagnosis, biosensing, regenerative medicine, and disease treatment. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of biomedical polymers, and discuss the comprehensive understanding of their property-function relationship for corresponding biomedical applications. In particular, a few burgeoning bioactive polymers, such as peptide/biomembrane/microorganism/cell-based biomedical polymers, are also introduced and highlighted as the emerging biomaterials for cancer precision therapy. Furthermore, the foreseeable challenges and outlook of the development of more efficient, healthier and safer biomedical polymers are discussed. We wish this systemic and comprehensive review on highlighting frontier progress of biomedical polymers could inspire and promote new breakthrough in fundamental research and clinical translation.

Abstract:Polymeric nanostructured materials (PNMs), which are polymeric materials in nanoscale or polymer composites containing nanomaterials, have become increasingly useful for biomedical applications. In specific, advances in polymer-related nanoscience and nanotechnology have brought a revolutionary change to produce new biomaterials with tailored properties and functionalities for targeted biomedical applications. These materials, including micelles, polymersomes, nanoparticles, nanocapsules, nanogels, nanofibers, dendrimers and nanocomposites, have been widely used in drug delivery, gene therapy, bioimage, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. This review presents a comprehensive overview on the various types of PNMs, their fabrication methods and biomedical applications, as well as the challenges in research and development of future PNMs.

Abstract:The past decade has seen tremendous demand for the production of new materials based on metal-containing macromolecules. Many research groups have dedicated their time and efforts to develop new transition metal-containing materials with biomedical applications. The introduction of transition metals to polymeric and dendrimeric materials gave rise to the production of many functional materials that continue to be examined for their activity. The biomedical activities of this class of materials have been the focus of attention as therapeutic agents for the treatment of many diseases, including cancer, as well as bacterial and viral infections. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In this review, a substantial section was devoted to the development of potential therapeutic agents based on metal-containing polymers or dendrimers, as well as metal nanoparticles. Their use as drug delivery systems in the treatment of cancer is also explained. Photoresponsive metallopolymers and dendrimers have seen remarkable interest in light of their role in photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Many studies showed the potential of this class in the treatment of cancer patients. Infectious diseases caused by microbial or viral infections have been examined by many research groups. This review highlights the development and examination of some examples of this class of macromolecules in combating these infectious diseases. The role of these transition metal-containing macromolecules in the production of reactive oxygen species is highlighted and their effectiveness has been demonstrated. This review also draws attention to some of the practical applications of utilizing these macromolecules as electrochemical biosensors and in bioimaging. This developing field has shown very promising results and there is a need to continue to examine new transition metal-containing macromolecules for their promising applications as biologically active materials. While the field of metal-containing macromolecules has been continually growing, this review is dedicated to highlighting the biomedical applications of transition metal-containing polymers and dendrimers in the treatment and detection of cancer and infectious diseases over the past decade.

Abstract:Metallic biomaterials have captured a lot of interest because of their distinct mechanical characteristics, biocompatibility, and usefulness in biopharmaceutical and biomedical applications. These materials are essential for the creation of several medical equipment and treatment strategies. They include titanium, cobalt-chromium alloys, stainless steel, and biodegradable metals. Metallic implants in orthopaedics offer strong support for bone mending and joint replacement; they have outstanding load-bearing capacity and are resistant to corrosion and wear. Metallic heart valves and stents provide structural integrity and functionality in cardiovascular applications, enhancing patient outcomes in heart valve and coronary artery illness. Metallic biomaterials are manufactured systems created to give biological tissues intrinsic support, and they are commonly employed in stents, dental implants, orthopaedic fixations, and joint replacements. Increased implant-related issues are linked to higher biomaterial utilization because of weak implant integration, infections, mechanical instability, necrosis, and inflammation, as well as ensuring extended patient care, discomfort, and functional loss. The performance and integration of metallic biomaterials inside biological systems have been improved by developments in surface modification techniques, such as coating with biocompatible polymers and drug-eluting technology. Researchers are exploring the possibility of using biodegradable metals that eventually dissolve within the body reducing the risk of long-term issues and repeat procedures. Metallic nanoparticles have also demonstrated potential in increasing therapeutic efficacy, minimizing systemic adverse effects, and selectively targeting disease locations when included in drug delivery systems. The main metallic biomaterials will be briefly discussed in this review, along with the most important established and new methods for modification, which are used to enhance the durability, flexibility, biointegration, and of the biometals, and boost their suitability for 3D printing.

Abstract:Biomedical materials have received increasing attention in recent decades and have been used in medical applications to advance patient care, such as prosthetic implants, tissue repair and regeneration, drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical or biological therapy products, and sensitive diagnostic technologies. Among different types of biomedical materials, nonferrous metals and related materials (NMRMs) are important and attractive candidates. The updating of biomedical NMRMs and devices heavily relies on original research and application-oriented innovation. Here, we provide recent research findings and succinct insights into the developments in NMRMs for biomedical applications in China, including the use of titanium, magnesium, copper, zinc, cobalt, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, rhenium, tantalum, tungsten, silver, gold, platinum, palladium, their alloys and compounds, rare earths, high-entropy alloys, and liquid metals. Finally, the literature review concludes with several possible directions of NMRMs for new and future developments in biomedical engineering.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Nanomedicine has provided cutting-edge technologies and innovative methods for modern biomedical research, offering unprecedented opportunities to tackle crucial biomedical issues. Nanomaterials with unique structures and properties can integrate multiple functions to achieve more precise diagnosis and treatment, making up for the shortcomings of traditional treatment methods. Among them, metal–polyphenol coordination polymers (MPCPs), composed of metal ions and phenolic ligands, are considered as ideal nanoplatforms for disease diagnosis and treatment. Recently, MPCPs have been extensively investigated in the field of biomedicine due to their facile synthesis, adjustable structures, and excellent biocompatibility, as well as pH-responsiveness. In this review, the classification of various MPCPs and their fabrication strategies are firstly summarized. Then, their significant achievements in the biomedical field such as biosensing, drug delivery, bioimaging, tumor therapy, and antibacterial applications are highlighted. Finally, the main limitations and outlooks regarding MPCPs are discussed.

Abstract:Owing to their unique features, including high cargo loading, biodegradability, and tailorability, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites have attracted increasing attention in various fields. In this review, application strategies of MOFs and their composites in nanomedicine with emphasis on their functions are presented, from drug delivery, therapeutic agents for different diseases, and imaging contrast agents to sensor nanoreactors. Applications of MOF derivatives in nanomedicine are also introduced. Besides, we summarize different functionalities related to MOFs, which include targeting strategy, biomimetic modification, responsive moieties, and other functional decorations. Finally, challenges and prospects are highlighted about MOFs in future applications.

Abstract:Nanofibers are nanomaterials with remarkable high surface properties. With diverse modifications, nanofibers possess optical, thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties, which can be widely applied in high precision fields. In this review, nanofibers based on metallic materials for biomedical applications are summarized for the first time. This review will allow researchers to better understand diverse applications of metallized nanofibers in biomedicine. Nanofibers are long, wire‐like materials with nanoscale diameters and specific length diameter ratios. Nanofibers have porous reticular networks with remarkably high specific surface areas and significant interconnectivity between pores, allowing for the chemical modification and loading of drugs. Metallized nanofibers are novel materials that enhance the performance of attributes of conventional nanofibers by combining metals with nanofibers through electrostatic spinning doping, chemical modification, and loading approaches. Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, metallized nanofibers are diverse, rapidly developed materials in the fields of physical chemistry, materials science, and battery preparation. To date, with improvement in advanced preparation techniques and biocompatibility levels for materials, metallized nanofiber applications are gradually expanding into the biomedical field due to their excellent thermal and electrical conductivities and unique metal properties. In this review, the applications of metallized nanofibers in biomedicine are summarized. It is suggested to prepare metallized multifunctional nanofibers for tissue engineering, drug delivery, tumor treatment, wound healing, and biosensing applications by taking safety and stability as the main material selection guidelines. Finally, the development of nanofibers for biomedical applications is summarized and discussed.

Abstract:In the past decade,nanoscale metal-organic frameworks（nMOFs） have drawn a great attention due to their high porosity,wide range of pore shapes,tunable frameworks and relatively low toxic.With the development of nanotechnology,many researchers studied the synthesis,characterization,functionalization and biotoxicity of nMOFs,and a more thorough understanding was developed about numerous nMOFs as promising platforms for biomedical applications.This review highlights the up-to-date progress of nMOFs related to their bio-applications such as drug delivery,bioimaging,biosensing and biocatalysis,and the common surface modification methods we re classified into four categories:covalent post-synthetically modification,coordinative post-synthetically modification,noncovalent postsynthetically modification and modification on the external surface.At the same time,the challenges and perspectives of nMOFs were discussed as well.

Abstract:Metal and amino acid (AA), as two kinds of entities, have been widely involved in biomaterials and nanomedicines. Recently, the marriage of them has developed new nanoformulations, amino acid-metal coordinated nanomaterials (AMCNs), which show great biomedical application potential in cancer therapy, antibacterial applications, biomedical imaging, <em>etc</em>. With the respective characteristics of metal and AA with rich biological and chemical properties, AMCNs can not only act as drug carriers with specific tumor targeting ability, but also realize synergistic therapy and imaging-guided therapy. Although the design and synthesis of amino acid-metal coordinated nanomaterials have been in-depth investigated, there are few systematic reviews on their biomedical application. In this review, we give a comprehensive summary of recent progresses in the design, fabrication, and biomedical applications of AMCNs. We also propose the future outlooks and challenges in aforementioned field. We expect that this review would contribute some inspiration for future research and development for amino acid metal coordinated nanomaterials.

Abstract:In this review, we focus on recent advances in the synthesis of polymer‐functionalized transition‐metal‐based nanomaterials and follow this up by discussing their applications in bioimaging diagnosis and cancer therapy. Transition‐metal‐based nanomaterials show great potential in cancer therapy owing to their intensive near‐IR absorption, excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, strong X‐ray attenuation, and magnetic properties. Functional polymers are usually introduced by a one‐step or multistep method to further endow these nanomaterials with great biocompatibility and physiological stability. Polymer‐decorated transition‐metal nanomaterials show great potential in multimodal imaging diagnosis (photoacoustic imaging, computed tomography, photoluminescence imaging, positron emission tomography, etc.) and cancer therapy (chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, microwave therapy, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy). At the end of this review, the prospects of these polymer‐decorated transition‐metal‐based nanomaterials are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have a high specific surface area, adjustable pores and can be used to obtain functional porous materials with diverse and well-ordered structures through coordination and self-assembly, which has intrigued wide interest in a broad range of disciplines. In the arena of biomedical engineering, the functionalized modification of MOFs has produced drug carriers with excellent dispersion and functionalities such as target delivery and response release, with promising applications in bio-detection, disease therapy, tissue healing, and other areas. This review summarizes the present state of research on the functionalization of MOFs by physical binding or chemical cross-linking of small molecules, polymers, biomacromolecules, and hydrogels and evaluates the role and approach of MOFs functionalization in boosting the reactivity of materials. On this basis, research on the application of functionalized MOFs composites in biomedical engineering fields such as drug delivery, tissue repair, disease treatment, bio-detection and imaging is surveyed, and the development trend and application prospects of functionalized MOFs as an important new class of biomedical materials in the biomedical field are anticipated, which may provide some inspiration and reference for further development of MOF for bio-medical applications.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline (NC) metallic materials have better mechanical properties, corrosion behavior and biocompatibility compared with their coarse-grained (CG) counterparts. Recently, nanocrystalline metallic materials are receiving increasing attention for biomedical applications. In this review, we have summarized the mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, and clinical applications of different types of NC metallic materials. Nanocrystalline materials, such as Ti and Ti alloys, shape memory alloys (SMAs), stainless steels (SS), and biodegradable Fe and Mg alloys prepared by high-pressure torsion, equiangular extrusion techniques, etc., have better mechanical properties, superior corrosion resistance and biocompatibility properties due to their special nanostructures. Moreover, future research directions of NC metallic materials are elaborated. This review can provide guidance and reference for future research on nanocrystalline metallic materials for biomedical applications.

Abstract:To date, liquid metals have been widely applied in many fields such as electronics, mechanical engineering and energy. In the last decade, with a better understanding of the physicochemical properties such as low viscosity, good fluidity, high thermal/electrical conductivity and good biocompatibility, gallium and gallium-based low-melting-point (near or below physiological temperature) alloys have attracted considerable attention in bio-related applications. This tutorial review introduces the common performances of liquid metals, highlights their featured properties, as well as summarizes various state-of-the-art bio-applications involving carriers for drug delivery, molecular imaging, cancer therapy and biomedical devices. Challenges for the clinical translation of liquid metals are also discussed.

Abstract:<p>Microbial colonization on material surfaces is ubiquitous. Biofilms derived from surface‐colonized microbes pose serious problems to the society from both an economical perspective and a health concern. Incorporation of antimicrobial nanocompounds within or on the surface of materials, or by coatings, to prevent microbial adhesion or kill the microorganisms after their attachment to biofilms, represents an important strategy in an increasingly challenging field. Over the last decade, many studies have been devoted to preparing meta‐based nanomaterials that possess antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities to combat pathogen‐related diseases. Herein, an overview on the state‐of‐the‐art antimicrobial nanosized metal‐based compounds is provided, including metal and metal oxide nanoparticles as well as transition metal nanosheets. The antimicrobial mechanism of these nanostructures and their biomedical applications such as catheters, implants, medical delivery systems, tissue engineering, and dentistry are discussed. Their properties as well as potential caveats such as cytotoxicity, diminishing efficacy, and induction of antimicrobial resistance of materials incorporating these nanostructures are reviewed to provide a backdrop for future research.</p>

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers have been widely used and have greatly promoted the development of biomedical fields because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The development of biotechnology and medical technology has set higher requirements for biomedical materials. Novel biodegradable polymers with specific properties are in great demand. Biodegradable polymers can be classified as natural or synthetic polymers according to the source. Synthetic biodegradable polymers have found more versatile and diverse biomedical applications owing to their tailorable designs or modifications. This review presents a comprehensive introduction to various types of synthetic biodegradable polymers with reactive groups and bioactive groups, and further describes their structure, preparation procedures and properties. The focus is on advances in the past decade in functionalization and responsive strategies of biodegradable polymers and their biomedical applications. The possible future developments of the materials are also discussed.
