Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) have emerged as a new class of multifunctional porous materials and received tremendous research attention from both academia and industry. Most POPs are constructed from versatile organic small molecules with diverse linkages through strong covalent bonds. Owing to their high surface area and porosity, low density, high stability, tunable pores and skeletons, and ease of functionalization, POPs have been extensively studied for gas storage and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, biomedicine, sensing, optoelectronics, energy storage and conversion, etc. Particularly, POPs are excellent platforms with exciting opportunities for biomedical applications. Consequently, considerable efforts have been devoted to preparing POPs with an emphasis on their biomedical applications. In this review, first, we briefly describe the different subclasses of POPs and their synthetic strategies and functionalization approaches. Then, we highlight the state-of-the-art progress in POPs for a variety of biomedical applications such as drug delivery, biomacromolecule immobilization, photodynamic and photothermal therapy, biosensing, bioimaging, antibacterial, bioseparation, etc. Finally, we provide our thoughts on the fundamental challenges and future directions of this emerging field.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers have received considerable attention in recent years because of their applicability as biomaterials. In particular, their hierarchical pore structures, variable morphologies, and tunable biological properties make them suitable as drug-delivery systems. In this review, the synthetic and post forming/control methods including templated methods, template-free methods, mechanical methods, electrospun methods, and 3D printing methods for controlling the hierarchical structures and morphologies of porous organic polymers are discussed, and the different methods affecting their specific surface areas, hierarchical structures, and unique morphologies are highlighted in detail. In addition, we discuss their applications in drug encapsulation and the development of stimuli (pH, heat, light, and dual-stimuli)-responsive materials, focusing on their use for targeted drug release and as therapeutic agents. Finally, we present an outlook concerning the research directions and applications of porous polymer-based drug delivery systems.

Abstract:Enormous effort has been devoted to the synthesis of porous organic polymers (POPs) and their extensive applications in gas adsorption and separation, supercapacitors, optoelectronic devices, chemosensors and catalysis. Owing to their superior characteristics including porous structure, facilely tailored functionalities, low cytotoxicity, desirable biocompatibility and tunable photophysical properties, POPs have attracted unprecedented attention in biomedical and related fields and afforded promising platforms for biomedical applications including nanocarriers, phototherapeutics, biomimetic systems, anti-microbial activity, bioimaging and biosensing. In this review, we will highlight recent research progress of POP-based biomedical platforms, ranging from the elaborate designs and synthetic methodologies to biologically related structure-function correlations.

Abstract:Biomedical polymers have been extensively developed for promising applications in a lot of biomedical fields, such as therapeutic medicine delivery, disease detection and diagnosis, biosensing, regenerative medicine, and disease treatment. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of biomedical polymers, and discuss the comprehensive understanding of their property-function relationship for corresponding biomedical applications. In particular, a few burgeoning bioactive polymers, such as peptide/biomembrane/microorganism/cell-based biomedical polymers, are also introduced and highlighted as the emerging biomaterials for cancer precision therapy. Furthermore, the foreseeable challenges and outlook of the development of more efficient, healthier and safer biomedical polymers are discussed. We wish this systemic and comprehensive review on highlighting frontier progress of biomedical polymers could inspire and promote new breakthrough in fundamental research and clinical translation.

Abstract:Surface engineering of particles based on a polymeric coating is of great interest in materials design and applications. Due to the disadvantages of non-biodegradability and undesirable biocompatibility, the application of petroleum-based synthetic polymers coating in the biomedical field has been greatly limited. In addition, there is lack of a universal surface modification method to functionalize particles of different compositions, sizes, shapes, and structures. Thus, it is imperative to develop a versatile biopolymeric coating with good biocompatibility and tunable biodegradability for the preparation of functional particle materials regardless of their surface chemical and physical structures. Recently, the natural polysaccharide polymers (e.g. chitosan and cellulose), polyphenol-based biopolymers (e.g. polydopamine and tannic acid), and proteins (e.g. amyloid-like aggregates) have been utilized in surface modification of particles, and applications of these modified particles in the field of biomedicine have been also intensively exploited. In this review, the preparation of the above three coatings on particles surface are summarized, and the applications of these materials in drug loading/release, biomineralization, cell immobilization/protection, enzyme immobilization/protection, and antibacterial/antiviral are exemplified. Finally, the challenges and the future research directions on biopolymer coating for particles surface engineering are prospected.

Abstract:Abstract Organic polymer coatings have been commonly used in biomedical field, which play an important role in achieving biological antifouling, drug delivery, and bacteriostasis. With the continuous development of polymer science, organic polymer coatings can be designed with complex and advanced functions, which is conducive to the construction of biomedical materials with different performances. According to different physical and chemical properties of materials, biomedical organic polymer coating materials are classified into zwitterionic polymers, non-ionic polymers, and biomacromolecules. The strategies of combining coatings with substrates include physical adsorption, chemical grafting, and self-adhesion. Though the coating materials and construction methods are different, many biomedical polymer coatings have been developed to achieve excellent performances, i.e., enhanced lubrication, anti-inflammation, antifouling, antibacterial, drug release, anti-encrustation, anti-thrombosis, etc. Consequently, a large number of biomedical polymer coatings have been used in artificial lungs, ureteral stent, vascular flow diverter, and artificial joints. In this review, we summarize different types, properties, construction methods, biological functions, and clinical applications of biomedical organic polymer coatings, and prospect future direction for development of organic polymer coatings in biomedical field. It is anticipated that this review can be useful for the design and synthesis of functional organic polymer coatings with various biomedical purposes.

Abstract:Exploring advanced porous materials is of critical importance in the development of science and technology. Porous polymers, being famous for their all-organic components, tailored pore structures, and adjustable chemical components, have attracted an increasing level of research interest in a large number of applications, including gas adsorption/storage, separation, catalysis, environmental remediation, energy, optoelectronics, and health. Recent years have witnessed tremendous research breakthroughs in these fields thanks to the unique pore structures and versatile skeletons of porous polymers. Here, recent milestones in the diverse applications of porous polymers are presented, with an emphasis on the structural requirements or parameters that dominate their properties and functionalities. The Review covers the following applications: i) gas adsorption, ii) water treatment, iii) separation, iv) heterogeneous catalysis, v) electrochemical energy storage, vi) precursors for porous carbons, and vii) other applications (e.g., intelligent temperature control textiles, sensing, proton conduction, biomedicine, optoelectronics, and actuators). The key requirements for each application are discussed and an in-depth understanding of the structure-property relationships of these advanced materials is provided. Finally, a perspective on the future research directions and challenges in this field is presented for further studies.

Abstract:The interface between material science and ophthalmic medicine is witnessing significant advances with the introduction of biopolymers in medical device fabrication. This review discusses the impact of biopolymers on the development of ophthalmic devices, such as intraocular lenses, stents, and various prosthetics. Biopolymers are emerging as superior alternatives due to their biocompatibility, mechanical robustness, and biodegradability, presenting an advance over traditional materials with respect to patient comfort and environmental considerations. We explore the spectrum of biopolymers used in ophthalmic devices and evaluate their physical properties, compatibility with biological tissues, and clinical performances. Specific applications in oculoplastic and orbital surgeries, hydrogel applications in ocular therapeutics, and polymeric drug delivery systems for a range of ophthalmic conditions were reviewed. We also anticipate future directions and identify challenges in the field, advocating for a collaborative approach between material science and ophthalmic practice to foster innovative, patient-focused treatments. This synthesis aims to reinforce the potential of biopolymers to improve ophthalmic device technology and enhance clinical outcomes.

Abstract:Extensive employment of biomaterials in the areas of biomedical and microbiological applications is considered to be of prime importance. As expected, oil based polymer materials were gradually replaced by natural or synthetic biopolymers due to their well-known intrinsic characteristics such as biodegradability, non-toxicity and biocompatibility. Literature on this subject was found to be expanding, especially in the areas of biomedical and microbiological applications. Introduction of porosity into a biomaterial broadens the scope of applications. In addition, increased porosity can have a beneficial effect for the applications which exploit their exceptional ability of loading, retaining and releasing of fluids. Different applications require a unique set of pore characteristics in the biopolymer matrix. Various pore morphologies have different characteristics and contribute different performances to the biopolymer matrix. Fabrication methods for bio-based porous materials more related to the choice of material. By choosing the appropriate combination of fabrication technique and biomaterial employment, one can obtain tunable pore characteristic to fulfill the requirements of desired application. In our previous review, we described the literature related to biopolymers and fabrication techniques of porous materials. This paper we will focus on the biomedical and microbiological applications of bio-based porous materials.

Abstract:Porous polymeric membranes have shown great potential in biological and biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, bioseparation, and biosensing, due to their structural flexibility, versatile surface chemistry, and biocompatibility. This review outlines the advantages and limitations of the fabrication techniques commonly used to produce porous polymeric membranes, with especial focus on those featuring nano/submicron scale pores, which include track etching, nanoimprinting, block-copolymer self-assembly, and electrospinning. Recent advances in membrane technology have been key to facilitate precise control of pore size, shape, density and surface properties. The review provides a critical overview of the main biological and biomedical applications of these porous polymeric membranes, especially focusing on drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and bioseparation. The effect of the membrane material and pore morphology on the role of the membranes for each specific application as well as the specific fabrication challenges, and future prospects of these membranes are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:Biomedical polymers play a key role in preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases, showcasing a wide range of applications. Their unique advantages, such as rich source, good biocompatibility, and excellent modifiability, make them ideal biomaterials for drug delivery, biomedical imaging, and tissue engineering. However, conventional biomedical polymers suffer from poor degradation in vivo, increasing the risks of bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. To address these issues, degradable biomedical polymers can serve as an alternative strategy in biomedicine. Degradable biomedical polymers can efficiently relieve bioaccumulation in vivo and effectively reduce patient burden in disease management. This review comprehensively introduces the classification and properties of biomedical polymers and the recent research progress of degradable biomedical polymers in various diseases. Through an in-depth analysis of their classification, properties, and applications, we aim to provide strong guidance for promoting basic research and clinical translation of degradable biomedical polymers.

Abstract:Fluoropolymers have unique physicochemical properties such as hydrophobicity and lipophobicity, good chemical stability and bio-inertness, low surface energy and phase segregation. Owing to these properties, fluoropolymers have been widely used to prepare high performance materials. Especially, the use of fluoropolymers in biomedical applications has grown rapidly during the past decade. This critical review focuses on the recent advances of fluoropolymers in gene delivery, cytosolic protein delivery, drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, photodynamic therapy, anti-fouling and anti-bacterial applications, and tissue engineering. The mechanisms and features of fluoropolymers in these specific applications are discussed. Besides, we have reviewed the methods to synthesize water-soluble fluoropolymers for the applications and explained their supramolecular assembly behaviors in solutions. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of fluoropolymers in biomedical applications are discussed.

Abstract:Synthetic biodegradable elastomers, such as polyesters and polyurethanes have revolutionized biomedical therapeutic strategies and devices. Driven by innovations in chemical synthesis and processing technologies, a series of biodegradable elastomers and corresponding devices with controllable properties and various functionalities have been developed. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress in synthesis, process technologies, and biomedical applications of biodegradable elastomers. Particular emphasis is on the molecular design for biodegradability, elasticity, and the newly developed functionalities including self-healing, antibacterial, fluorescence, and shape-memory of biodegradable polyesters and polyurethane as well as their corresponding processing strategies. Subsequently, the recent progress of biodegradable elastomers in different biomedical applications is reviewed. A comprehensive conclusion and outlook pointing out emerging research directions, future challenges and potential solutions complete this work.

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers have been widely used and have greatly promoted the development of biomedical fields because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The development of biotechnology and medical technology has set higher requirements for biomedical materials. Novel biodegradable polymers with specific properties are in great demand. Biodegradable polymers can be classified as natural or synthetic polymers according to the source. Synthetic biodegradable polymers have found more versatile and diverse biomedical applications owing to their tailorable designs or modifications. This review presents a comprehensive introduction to various types of synthetic biodegradable polymers with reactive groups and bioactive groups, and further describes their structure, preparation procedures and properties. The focus is on advances in the past decade in functionalization and responsive strategies of biodegradable polymers and their biomedical applications. The possible future developments of the materials are also discussed.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Poly(ether-ether) and poly(ether-ester) block copolymers have been widely applied in biomedical fields over two decades due to their good safety and biocompatibility. Poly(ethylene glycol), poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propylene glycol) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) have been approved as excipients by Food and Drug Administration. Because of the broad perspective in biomedical fields, many novel poly(etherether) and poly(ether-ester) block copolymers have been developed for drug delivery, gene therapy and tissue engineering in recent years. This review focuses on active targeting theranostic systems, gene delivery systems and tissue engineering based on poly(ether-ether) and poly(ether-ester) block copolymers.METHODS:We perform a structured search of bibliographic databases for peer-reviewed scientific reports using a focused review question and inclusion/exclusion criteria. The literatures related to the topics of this review are cataloged according to the developed copolymers or their applications such as active targeting theranostic systems, gene delivery systems and tissue engineering. Some important advances and new trends are summarized in this review.RESULTS:Some commercial poly(ether-ether) copolymers have been used as excipients for drug research and development. Amphiphilic and biodegradable poly(ether-ester) diblock copolymers are capable of formulating biomedical nanoparticulate theranostic systems, and targeting moiety-functionalized poly(ether-ester) diblock copolymers will be further developed and applied in biomedical nanotechnology fields in the near future. Meanwhile, triblock or multiblock poly(ether-ether) and poly(ether-ester) copolymers with environmentsensitive properties are suitable for gene delivery and tissue engineering. Poly(ether-ether) and poly(ether-ester) copolymers are being extensively applied in active targeting theranostic systems, gene delivery systems and tissue engineering.CONCLUSIONS:Biodegradable, environment-sensitive and targeting moiety-functionalized block copolymers, which are being applied in active targeting theranostic systems, gene delivery systems and tissue engineering, are promising candidates for treatment of various diseases.

Abstract:With the intense exploration of photonic materials and devices in emerging fields such as wearable techniques, smart healthcare, and biomimetic robotics, developing photonic devices with high flexibility, biocompatibility, and even biodegradability has become critical. To obtain photonic devices with outstanding optical and biomechanical properties, research and development on various aspects, including material synthesis, structural design, function implementation, and device fabrication, are urgent. Organic polymers have been considered to be some of the most competitive materials for flexible photonics due to their soft texture, flexibility, biocompatibility, facile synthesis, and simple modification. A series of novel functional photonic devices such as optical waveguides, diffraction gratings, and photonic crystals, have been developed based on organic polymers. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent progress on the study of flexible organic polymer photonics. Current techniques, methods, and applications are summarized and analyzed. Perspectives on the future challenges and applications of flexible photonics are also discussed.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers (CPs) are a series of organic semiconductor materials with large pi-conjugated backbones and delocalized electronic structures. Due to their specific photophysical properties and photoelectric effects, plenty of CPs with varied chemical structures and functions are quickly evolving in the diverse biomedical field, such as fluorescence imaging, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, etc. In addition, the functionalized side chains of CPs could contribute to the expected water-solubility, biocompatibility, biological response, etc. CPs can also be prepared into nanoparticles for acquiring controllable particle size and dispersion through the common synthesis procedure. In this review, we focus on the latest developments of CPs in biotherapy, biological regulation, biological response and bioprinting applications. The major challenges and outlooks of CPs for applications in the biomedical field are also discussed.

MOFs unique structure has enabled them for most applications, particularly in biomedical and healthcare. A number of very informative review papers are available on the biomedical applications of MOFs for the reader's convenience. However, many of those reviews focus mainly on drug delivery applications, and no significant work has been reported on other MOFs for biomedical applications. This review aims to present a compact and highly informative global assessment of the recent developments in biomedical applications (excluding drug-delivery) of MOFs along with critical analysis. Researchers have recently adopted both synthetic and post-synthetic routes for the fabrication and modification of MOFs that have been discussed and analyzed. A critical review of the latest reports on the significant and exotic area of bio-sensing capabilities and applications of MOFs has been given in this study. In addition, other essential applications of MOFs, including photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and antimicrobial activities, are also included. These recently grown emergent techniques and cancer treatment options have gained attention and require further investigations to achieve fruitful outcomes. MOF's role in these applications has been thoroughly discussed, along with future challenges and valuable suggestions for the research community that will help meet future demands.
