Abstract:Abstract Chen-Ning Yang ( ) is the most distinguished Chinese theoretical physicist. In 1954, together with Robert Mills, he formulated the Yang–Mills Gauge Theory, which led to the development of the Standard Model, the leading framework for understanding particle physics. In 1956, Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee ( ) proposed the possibility of parity non-conservation in weak interaction, which won them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. Besides these two major achievements, Yang made many other seminal contributions to particle physics, statistical physics and condensed matter physics. At the end of 2003, Yang returned to China from the US and established the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University in Beijing. NSR’s Executive Editor-in-Chief Mu-ming Poo ( ), a neurobiologist, and Alexander Wu Chao ( ), an accelerator physicist at Stanford University, talked with Professor Yang on a variety of topics, ranging from his retrospective view on Yang–Mills theory, on his contemporary physicists, on tastes in scientific research, and on the current and future developments of Chinese science. The following is an excerpt from this conversation that took place on 21 March 2019 at Tsinghua University, Beijing.

Abstract:Professor Chen Ning Yang has made seminal and influential contributions in many different areas in theoretical physics. This talk focuses on his contributions in statistical mechanics, a field in which Professor Yang has held a continual interest for over sixty years. His Master's thesis was on a theory of binary alloys with multi-site interactions, some 30 years before others studied the problem. Likewise, his other works opened the door and led to subsequent developments in many areas of modern day statistical mechanics and mathematical physics. He made seminal contributions in a wide array of topics, ranging from the fundamental theory of phase transitions, the Ising model, Heisenberg spin chains, lattice models, and the Yang-Baxter equation, to the emergence of Yangian in quantum groups. These topics and their ramifications will be discussed in this talk.

Abstract:Professor Chen Ning Yang was the chairperson of the ad hoc group for formation of the AAPPS from 1988 to August 1990 and served as the first president of the AAPPS from 11 August 1990 to 2 July 1994. He worked as a council member of the AAPPS in the second term and retired from the council in the end of 1997. The council acknowledged his long-standing contribution for the AAPPS and the AAPPS Award of Physics was renamed as the AAPPS Chen Ning Yang Award.

Abstract:Professor Yitai Qian,a pioneer in nanomaterials,an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC),has committed his entire career to the development of solid-state chemistry and nanoscience in China.Prof.Qian is recognized for his pioneering contributions to the development of emerging high-Tc superconducting materials,and the development of solvothermal methodology for the synthesis of a wide range of low-dimensional nanomaterials.Beyond the landmarking scientific advancements he has made in his own trailblazing research,Prof.Qian has directly mentored more than 100 excellent PhD students,in addition to many more master and undergraduate students,many of them have gone on to become the leading scientists in China and worldwide in the field of nanoscience and beyond.Without exaggeration,the academic offspring and extended family of Prof.Qian have contributed a substantial portion of nanoscience and nanotechnology development over the past several decades.

Abstract:Dr. Chen-Lu Tsou (1923-2006) obtained his doctorate from Cambridge in 1951, and became one of the founders of Chinese biochemistry. He spent most of his life on protein structure and function, making a number of original contributions. To commemorate his one hundred years of birth, two of his research achievements are elaborated in detail here, one of which is relation between the functional groups of proteins and their biological activity, and the other is on kinetics of irreversible modification of enzyme activity. This commemorative article intends to share with audiences how much can be achieved by the older generations of Chinese scientists with great minds but few resources, as epitomized in the two great pieces of work by Dr. TSOU.

Abstract:The phonon, quantized lattice vibration, plays a fundamental role in condensed matter physics. Professor Kun Huang is known throughout the world for his many pioneering contributions to physics, in particular to the phonon physics, a branch closely related to the luminescence in solids. His book entitled Dynamics in Crystal Lattice (in collaboration with Nobel laureate M. Born) is the first comprehensive and compact presentation in this field on the basis of quantum mechanics, which, although published about half century ago, is still used as standard textbook until now. In his early articles on the interaction between radiation field and ionic crystals, he first proposed an important idea later known as polariton, which has changed our way of thinking about the propagating the EM Modes in crystalline media. His theory on multiphonon transition in semiconductors and insulators, the Huang-Rhys theory, which dealt with both the multiphonon optical and non-radiative transitions, laid the foundation of this important field. He pointed out the possibility of observing X-ray diffuse scattering in crystals due to impurities at first, later known as diffuse scattering. In early 1950's, he formulated a pair of phenomenological equations relating the long-wavelength optical vibration to macroscopic electric field and polarization, which has been widely applied and named as Huang's Equation. As a 70 years old man, he and his collaborator resolved a puzzle about the optical phonon modes in semiconductor superlattices and worked out the Huang-Zhu Model. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, Huang was recently honored with the Supreme Scientific and Technological Award in China. Huang's main scientific contributions and their significance are briefly reviewed in this paper.
