Abstract:Abstract With the development of computer, computer application technology has been widely penetrated into various industries. Among them, MATLAB is a commercial mathematical software, which is second to none in mathematical science and technology application software. In this paper, the mathematical modeling strategy is studied by MATLAB software. Mathematical modeling is an effective mode of cultivating mathematical thinking, which is of great significance to the cultivation of students’ logical thinking ability. The strong practicality of mathematical modeling cultivates students’ innovative consciousness, the diversity of problems cultivates students’ innovative ability, and the interdisciplinary nature enhances students’ innovative knowledge reserve. This paper first analyses the role of mathematics education in cultivating innovative thinking, and then puts forward effective strategies for developing mathematical modeling activities. It is hoped that the idea of mathematical modeling can be better integrated into the mathematics teaching in Colleges and universities.

Abstract:Abstract Discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling, along with the educational discourse surrounding these, have many connections. However, ways that the educational discourse on discrete mathematics can benefit from the inclusion of examples of mathematical modelling and the accompanying discussion are currently under-researched. In this paper, we elaborate on the educational potential of examples of mathematical modelling based on the usage of methods from discrete mathematics, with a focus on secondary education. We first describe vertex-edge graphs as possible topics of discrete mathematics that are accessible at school level within modelling lessons. Secondly, in the context of a case study, we describe modelling activities with students at the end of lower-secondary education, using a classical problem of discrete mathematics originating from the Königsberg bridge problem. The students’ solution processes for this optimisation problem based on graph theory are described. Their approaches are examined referring to the phases of the modelling cycle, using the method of qualitative content analysis. We studied in particular the extent to which students use concepts related to vertex-edge graphs in specific sub-phases of the modelling process. The analysis allows the required sub-competences of modelling to be identified and the connection of these competences with discrete mathematics to be worked out. On the basis of this analysis, educational opportunities of teaching discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling are assessed. Overall, we point out the possibilities and opportunities for using examples from the field of discrete mathematics to acquire modelling competences and to foster the linkage of mathematical modelling and discrete mathematics at school level.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling literacy is one of the six core literacies in high school mathematics and occupies an important place in the objectives of the high school mathematics curriculum. "The core element of mathematical modeling literacy is to abstract mathematically from real problems, express them in mathematical language, and construct models to solve them with mathematical methods. The STEAM education concept has received much attention in the education field because of its effective integration of "science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics" in the practice of education and teaching, which not only makes up for the shortage of traditional teaching in knowledge inquiry, but also helps to improve the problems of traditional classrooms. This paper explores the development of mathematical modeling literacy in high school by drawing on the STEAM education concept, and examines the effectiveness of the integration of the two through specific teaching cases.

Abstract:In this paper I will discuss and exemplify my perspectives on how to teach mathematical modeling, as well as discuss quite different faces of mathematical modeling. The field of mathematical modeling is so enormous and vastly outspread and just not possible to comprehend in one single paper; or in one single book, or even in one single book shelf. Nevertheless, I have found that the more I can illuminate some of the various interpretations and perceptions of mathematical modeling which exists in the world around us when introducing and starting a course in mathematical modeling, the more benefit I will have during the course when discussing the need and purpose of mathematical modeling with the students. The fact that only some models fit within the practical teaching and assessing of a course in mathematical modeling, does not exclude the importance to illustrate that the world of today cannot go on without mathematical modeling. Students are nevertheless much more charmed with some models of reality than others.

Abstract:Abstract Creativity has been identified as a key characteristic that allows students to adapt smoothly to rapid societal and economic changes in the real world. However, Chinese students appear to perform less well in mathematical problem-solving and problem-posing abilities, which are strongly connected to mathematical creativity. Mathematical modelling has recently been introduced as one of the six core competencies in the Chinese mathematical curriculum and is built on students’ ability to solve real-world problems using mathematical means. As mathematical modelling is characterised by openness regarding the understanding of complex real-world problems and the complex relationship between the real world and mathematics, for the strengthening of creativity, mathematical modelling activities seem to be adequate to accomplish this purpose. In this paper, we describe a study with 71 upper secondary school students, 50 pre-service mathematics teachers, and 66 in-service mathematics teachers, based on an extended didactical framework regarding mathematical modelling as a creativity-demanding activity. The results of the study indicate a significant correlation between modelling competencies and creativity aspects. Especially significant correlations between the adequacy of the modelling approaches and the two creativity aspects of usefulness and fluency could be identified, as well as a significant negative correlation between usefulness and originality. The results of the correlational analysis of relationships among the four criteria were not always consistent in the three participant groups. Overall, the results have implications for the promotion of creativity for various expertise groups and demonstrate the dependency of the modelling activities on the mathematical knowledge of the participants and the mathematical topic with which they are dealing.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is making a theoretical discussion on the relationship between mathematical modeling and integrated STEM education. First of all, STEM education perspective and the construct of mathematical modeling in mathematics education is introduced. A review of literature is provided on how mathematical modeling literature may contribute to theoretical conceptualization of STEM education by specifically addressing the professional competencies that teachers need. The discussion followed on how mathematical modeling activities and project-based learning contexts contribute to integrated STEM education by providing two research-based experiences, one of which is the model rocketry project carried out by pre-service physics teachers and the other one of which is a mathematical modeling activity solved by pre-service mathematics teachers.

Abstract:Abstract Engaging with mathematical modeling can support learners to collaboratively explore mathematics in integrated ways as well as generate mathematical ideas and representations that may be useful in everyday life. Although several studies provide diverse insights into teaching and learning mathematical modeling, research has yet to be conducted on the mathematical modeling learning opportunities available to secondary mathematics preservice teachers (PTs) in mathematics and education courses in teacher education programs. This study investigates the mathematical modeling learning opportunities reported by 48 instructors and ten focus groups of 37 PTs. Multiple data sources (e.g., interview transcripts, syllabi, tasks, and exams) collected from universities were used to achieve triangulation in this case study of secondary preparation programs. When asked about mathematical modeling, both PTs and instructors reported rich examples of mathematical modeling from the opportunities afforded by their respective programs. Both also reported modeling experiences that were not mathematical modeling, such as word problems, representations, or demonstrations. Along with the study's particular themes and examples, common mathematical modeling opportunities recalled by PTs and instructors are elaborated in our findings. This study intends to begin a discussion of possible pathways for providing rich opportunities for PTs to engage in mathematical modeling.

Abstract:Introduction: Mathematical modeling has become a crucial competence in mathematics education in many countries and regions due to the increasingly complex real-world problems that students face in the 21st century. Previous research has shown that mathematical modeling contributes to the development of students' creativity, particularly with respect to stimulating and protecting the curiosity of children. However, previous studies have not explored or examined the relationships among middle school students' mathematical modeling competency, curiosity, and creativity based on data drawn from large-scale assessments and have not investigated the influence of teachers' teaching methods in this context. Methods: This study used convenience sampling to select 4,531 seventh-grade students from eastern and western, urban and rural areas in China. Online tests and questionnaires were used to measure their mathematical modeling competency, curiosity, creativity and guided inquiry teaching, and a moderated mediation model was used to analyze the effect of mathematical modeling competency on creativity. Results: The results showed the following. (1) There are statistically significant differences between boys and girls in terms of their mathematical modeling competency, curiosity, and creativity. Specifically, boys score significantly higher than girls on these variables. (2) Creativity exhibits a statistically significant positive correlation with mathematical modeling competency, curiosity, and guided inquiry teaching. (3) Curiosity mediates the relationship between mathematical modeling competency and creativity, and guided inquiry teaching moderates the influence of curiosity. In high-level guided inquiry teaching classes, curiosity has a stronger influence on creativity, and it mediates the relationship between mathematical modeling competency and creativity more strongly. Discussion: This study empirically verified the influence of mathematical modeling competency on creativity and provided a possible way to cultivate children's creativity. Future research should use longitudinal analysis to verify the causal relationship between mathematical modeling competency and creativity and to systematically explore the possible path by which mathematical modeling competency affects creativity.

Abstract:Mathematics education researchers and policy documents in the United States have expressed the need to improve the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling at the K–12 levels so that students can apply their knowledge of mathematics to solve real-world situations. Unfortunately, most practicing teachers (PTs) and preservice teachers (PSTs) acquire didactical and pedagogical styles that do not support effective modeling practices. To investigate these dilemmas, this study examined PTs’ pedagogical experiences in and PSTs’ perspectives on mathematical modeling practices. Participants included 62 PTs and 18 PSTs from a Midwestern region of the United States. Data originated from questionnaire items and open-ended questions, which were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Varied participants’ ideas on mathematical modeling practices were identified, recorded, and summarized. Results indicated that most of these PTs and PSTs have little to no experiences with mathematical modeling practices and associated pedagogies. Such results along with a supplemental discussion have implications for teacher education programs and professional development centered on mathematical modeling education.

Abstract:Mathematicians have traditionally been a select group of academics that produce high-impact ideas allowing substantial results in several fields of science. Throughout the past 35 years, undergraduates enrolling in mathematics or statistics have represented a nearly constant rate of approximately 1% of bachelor degrees awarded in the United States. Even within STEM majors, mathematics or statistics only constitute about 6% of undergraduate degrees awarded nationally. However, the need for STEM professionals continues to grow and the list of needed occupational skills rests heavily in foundational concepts of mathematical modeling curricula, where the interplay of data, computer simulation and underlying theoretical frameworks takes center stage. It is not viable to expect a majority of these STEM undergraduates to pursue a double-major that includes mathematics. Here we present our solution, some early results of implementation, and a vision for possible nationwide adoption.

Abstract:This paper's focuses on how to design and implement a high school mathematical modeling class under the STEAM concept. STEAM, as an international emerging talent cultivation concept, can cultivate students' interdisciplinary cooperation and innovation ability, and it overcomes the shortcomings of the current mathematics class in China, which is less practical, and uses the knowledge of multiple disciplines to solve practical problems in the form of integrated practical activities. Using the case study method, the author compiled the design ideas and several important aspects of mathematical modeling projects under the STEAM concept, and made three suggestions for the integration of mathematical modeling and STEAM.

Abstract:In this paper we present the main implications of Modeling in the teaching of Mathematics where empirical data was obtained from the use of mathematical modeling for teachers through Courses of Continuing Education. The objectives of the research were to verify the possibilities and difficulties in establishing modeling as a teaching methodology. The experiment was conducted in four Courses given to 105 teachers. The main difficulty in terms of teachers’ education was their lack of experience with tasks of this nature. It is rather rare for teachers’ Mathematics training programs to include any orientation regarding Modeling, whether in the use of the process or its formal teaching. In spite of the difficulties, research has shown that the adoption of mathematical models in teaching can lead to better achievements for teachers and students, becoming one of the chief agents for change.
