Abstract:There is increasing interest in the development of decision support systems (DSSs) for river basin management. Moreover, new ideas and techniques such as sustainability, adaptive management, Geographic Information System, Remote Sensing and participations of new stakeholders have stimulated their develo pment. A DSS often encompasses a number of sub-models, such as models for flood risk, ecology, tourism, recreat ion and navigation. These models are fundamental in supporting the whole decision-making process. However, often complicated and sophisticated models are used which are difficult to understand and operate for decisi on-makers. Moreover, these models may be not necessary for some specific-purpose DSSs, such as those for prelimin ary planning purposes. The aim of this paper is therefo re to find appropriate models by applying a propose d appropriateness framework. An appropriate system is defined as 'a system which can produce outputs ena bling decision makers to distinguish different river mana gement actions under uncertainty according to the c urrent problem'. The proposed framework is applied to a sub-model of a DSS — a flood risk model to illustrate the idea of appropriateness. The results show that the framewor k proposed is applicable. It helps distinguish the management actions and find the appropriate models for the DSS s.

Abstract:Finding design intent embodied as high-level geometric relations between a CAD model's sub-parts facilitates various tasks such as model editing and analysis. This is especially important for boundary-representation models arising from, e.g., reverse engineering or CAD data transfer. These lack explicit information about design intent, and often the intended geometric relations are only approximately present. A novel solution to this problem is presented based on detecting approximate local incomplete symmetries, in a hierarchical decomposition of the model into simpler, more symmetric sub-parts. Design intent is detected as congruencies, symmetries and symmetric arrangements of the leaf-parts in this decomposition. All elementary 3D symmetry types and common symmetric arrangements are considered. They may be present only locally in subsets of the leaf-parts, and may also be incomplete, i.e. not all elements required for a symmetry need be present. Adaptive tolerance intervals are detected automatically for matching inter-point distances, enabling efficient, robust and consistent detection of approximate symmetries. Doing so avoids finding many spurious relations, reliably resolves ambiguities between relations, and reduces inconsistencies. Experiments show that detected relations reveal significant design intent.

Abstract:The MBMS(model base management system) is the kernel of a DSS(decision support system). The authors introduce the design and implementation of a client/server model base management system that runs on a heterogeneous distributed environment in this paper. In this system, a model is viewed as a program module and defined by a model IDL(interface definition language). By being organized with object oriented method and supporting remote and dynamic function (model) invocation transparently, the DSS may be developed easily and have very good static and dynamic extensibility. Also since many semantic information have been stored in the model base, the authors may develop more tools based on it to support the DSS development process.

Abstract:Two classical models in distributed environment,symmetrical cluster and unsymmetrical cluster,were introduced.Aiming at the problems in enterprise applications caused by the two models,a distributed model based on data partition was presented,and a new load balance algorithm based on database access was proposed.Two critical threshold values Dmax and VSRT in the algorithm could be obtained by testing and analysis.The model and the load balance mechanism benefit the system with good performance,high scalability and dynamic load balance.They were applied to a financial system which was reengineered from standalone legacy system into J2EE distributed environment.The system architecture based on data partition was implemented successfully and performed very well.

Abstract:A novel theoretical model of the component agent was proposed based on multi-layer finite state machine (FSM) and the requirements of collaborative design. And a new collaborative design-oriented product data model (CDPDM) was put forward. The CDPDM included three basic data modules (function data, structure data and management data) and a remote data modification module. This model had five characteristics: neutral representation, reusability, knowledge engineering, remote data modification and self-management. By combining the theoretical agent model with the CDPDM, a product component agent frame was proposed and some key issues, e. g. environment model construction, program and data encapsulation, software reuse and strategy set organization, were discussed. The practical application in demonstration enterprise shows that the proposed system can enhance the ability of the collaborative product design.

Abstract:The article discusses the use of optimization models in financial decision support systems (DSS). The architecture of the DSS is considered. It is determined by the nature of the interaction of its main components: the user interface, database and data warehouse, documents and rules, models and analytical tools, communications infrastructure and networks, as well as elements of these parts. The architecture of the DSS for solving problems of financial management is determined by the nature of interaction of its main components. Conceptual and functional models are presented. The functional model of the DSS reflects the structure of control actions on decision-makers, persons involved in the implementation of corrective actions necessary for effective financial performance. According to the functional model, a block diagram of the DSS is proposed. The block diagram of decision support consists of three main subsystems and provides modular-block construction. The proposed system is characterized by an open architecture and can be easily modified for functional expansion or for connecting and using external databases. The DSS should provide a common operating environment for modeling objects in a dynamically changing economic situation. The operating environment contains basic calculation algorithms, and allows the user to create own algorithms for calculating cash flows and used indicators. Thus, the key element of the integrated decision support system for managing the financial condition of the enterprise is the models laid down in the basis of the system. The architecture of the DSS based on algorithms is considered. A DSS of this type contains a set of algorithms for solving a selected class of problems. Of the factors that influence the choice of a specific architecture of the DSS in financial management, we can highlight (i) the need for further development of the system, (ii) its adaptation, and (iii) the application of the evolutionary approach to the development of the DSS. The components of the system are: data input component, resource allocation component, strategy selection component, output component. The resource allocation component contains the following sub-components: determination of dependence coefficients, solution of optimization problem, solution of equation. The strategy selection component includes the sub-components for calculating the values of integral design characteristics, for calculating the values of groups of design characteristics, and for the pairwise comparison of strategies. The information model of the component “The distribution of financial resources of the enterprise” is presented. The DSS performs data processing and checks for critical decision characteristics. The formalized structure of the algorithm for using the proposed models of distribution of financial resources, types of model integration are considered.

Abstract:Abstract The IFBMDA is an Information-Flow-Based model for Mechanical Design Automation. This paper first analyzes the mechanical design process from the views of design methodology and cognitive model. Then, two essential assumptions about mechanical design behavior are provided. Based on the analysis and fundamental assumptions, this paper thoroughly describes five submodels which constitute the automation model IFBMDA. They are Information Flow model, Knowledge Processing model, Non-monotonic Expansion Search model, Iterative Constraint Generation and Solution model and Design Process Stage model. Then, this paper also evaluates the model in both practical and theoretical aspects and shows that it is well-developed in both aspects. Finally, the perspective of further mechanical design automation research is outlined.

GMSPDM) is proposed, and the technical elements of the model are also analyzed. In essence, the model can provide a group of DSS techniques. Given an actual problem, a group of DSS techniques are generated from the model, and through some specific operations, a specific decision support system is established. Abstract:Feature is the fundamental design unit in modern solid modeling systems, and this makes a well defined feature interface a matter of concernment in the component based distributed modeling environment. This paper introduces a feature based modeling service framework and proposes an interface model of feature based modeling service toward such a modeling environment, including support of remote feature attachment and semantic maintenance. A prototype based feature interface definition strategy using procedural attaching and declarative validation mechanism is discussed and how the interface model tackles with the problems in distributed environment, such as locality transparently model reusing, is also explained.
Development of an expert system-based experimental frame for modeling of manufacturing systems

Abstract:Scope and method of study. The overall goal of this research was to develop a methodology that utilizes expert systems in the experimental frame module of an advanced modeling environment for manufacturing systems in order to provide timely assistance to the problem definition and solver selection decision making processes. Such an experimental frame expert system includes (1) a problem definition knowledge base which is capable of deriving a structured problem from a set of symptoms, and (2) a tool selection knowledge base which is capable of recommending the most suitable tools (analysis and/or optimization) to address the defined structured problem. In the construction of these two knowledge bases, knowledge acquired from multiple experts (from both industry and academia) is utilized. Findings and conclusions. The primary motivation for this research was the author's desire to contribute to the advancement of modeling of complex manufacturing systems by addressing some of the issues related to the shortcomings of traditional modeling methodologies including the lack of reusability and lack of accessibility. At the highest level, the outcome of this research effort is a new framework within which expert systems are combined with object oriented modeling paradigm to maximize the accessibility of models by non-modeling specialists. Lists of symptoms, problems, and what-if questions which can be commonly found in discrete part manufacturing systems are collected, organized, and presented. Mappings of the collected symptoms to structured problems and the structured problems to a set of tools are also collected, organized, and presented. A proof of concept implementation of this framework in which the experimental frame expert system (EFES) works with the advanced modeling environment (AME) under development in the Center for CIM at OSU was developed under the Smalltalk-80 based VisualWorks 2.0 development environment. This implementation demonstrates promising potential for further research and commercial application of this methodology.

Abstract:This paper extends DDF (Dynamic Date Flow graph) to a large-grain model which can guide system design in function level. The adoption of a novel algorithm, as well as a formal definition for cDDF, strengthens the capacity of DDF as a formal specification model. Starting from a lower level of abstraction, it merges sub-modules into a larger one by extracting the Input/Output relations. The extracted I/O relations, together with the new module's functional description, could serve as IP core selection criteria in design space exploration. Normal DDF merely decomposes compound node into simpler ones. The algorithm presented in this paper provides a reverse process which exploits the hierarchical characteristic of DDF by capturing both data and control flow in different level of abstraction. The important steps in design work, such as function partition, scheduling, optimization, etc., are also reconsidered synthetically to adapt the introduction of the new idea.

Abstract:The integration and application of distributed knowledge are bottleneck of development of ICAD (intelligent computer aided design). In this paper, a new model of DICAD is presented, which is MCMT-DICAD (master control and multi tile distributed intelligent compute aided design), based on Java and XML. Its Client and Server components, runtime schema and some important solutions are also given. An example of electrical equipment computer aided design system, which uses this model, is introduced here. Then, it is concluded that MCMT-DICAD is an easy way to build safe and extensible distributed system, which meets the case of engineer design system and the integration and application of distributed knowledge.

Abstract:Model management is an important research topic in the Decision Support Systems. Current research focuses on methods and theories to improve shareability, and effective utilization of decision models in an organization. This paper presents a Web services approach to the representation and design of model base in organizational model management. Ontology is used for the model base design, and "decision ontology" is proposed for model management. XML is used for the exchangeable representation of decision ontology. The proposed methods and theories are used in the construction of a DSS for R&D project selection at the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The proposed approach makes use of the Web services technologies, it allows the sharing and reuse of decision models in the Internet environment.

Abstract:Cyber-Physical System (CPS) serves the key to realize smart manufacturing, while Digital Twin (DT) acts as the key to realize CPS. The evolving and maturing Digital Twin concept has several inherent shortfalls. In this paper, a new RSDM model enabled by Digital Twin is proposed to address these problems with iterative design optimization and efficient design knowledge management. The results show that RSDM model is helpful for enhancing radar structure design efficiency and design optimization, and is a promising framework for implementing smart design.
