Abstract:ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code ,SectionⅧDivision 3,Alternative Rules for Construction of High Pressure Vessels and The High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan KHK ,Standard for Construc-tion of Ultra High Pressure Gas Facilities are widely used in high pressure vessel design .They are similar specifications with differences .It discusses the fatigue design process for pressure vessel design ,compares and analyzes the differences of the fatigue design curves , mean stress correction methods and surface roughness .Such as the application of Abaqus for the fatigue evaluation of a crystal reactor vessel barrel , respectively according to KHK and ASME ,shows that the Best -fit Curve Method of KHK standard ob-tains the maximum allowable lifetime ,followed by method of ASME standard ,the life of KHK Design Fa-tigue Curve Method is minimum .

Abstract:Fatigue is one of the most common and important failure modes in pressure vessel. ASME VIII-2 provides three screening criterion and three detailed assessment method for fatigue failure. With the decrease of material design factor and the extension of fatigue curve to high cycle, the applicable scope of the three screening criteria become relatively smaller and the economic efficiency is also reduced. Meanwhile, the three fatigue evaluation methods given in ASME VIII-2 Code are all based on detailed numerical calculations (such as finite element analysis (FEA)). Both economic cost and requirements of technical personnel of engineers are higher. In this paper, a simplified fatigue evaluation method is proposed, which gives simple implementation procedures and relatively conservative fatigue evaluation results. Compared with the screening criteria method A, the main advantage is that the scope of its application is wider, that is: (1) the number of significant load cycle can be considered is extended from 1000 to 105; (2) there is no upper limit to the range of pressure fluctuation, which is 20% in method A. Compared with the screening criteria method B, the main advantage is that this method is much simpler and for most materials, design fatigue curves are not required during calculation and evaluation. Compared with the three detailed assessment methods given in ASME VIII-2, this method is very convenient and does not require detailed FEA. The method proposed in this paper can simplify the evaluation process of fatigue analysis in a certain range and provide a more cost-effective engineering assessment method.

Abstract:A dynamical failure assessment of explosion containment vessel(ECV) using FAD method is conducted.The numerical analysis of a cylindrical vessel with through crack subjected to impulsive loading was performed.Using virtual crack closure technology,the dynamical stress intensity factors were obtained.The result indicates that the proposed dynamical FAD method is valid to evaluate the effect of impact load with the same impulse and different peak value,where the load with larger peak value and shorter during time causes more severe damage.The safety margin of the traditional method transferring impulsive loading to static load is larger than that of dynamic loading.Also,FAD method can efficiently reflect dimensional effect,thus it is particularly feat for the assessment of vessels under dynamic loads.

Abstract:Design fatigue life of high-pressure hydrogen storage vessels constructed of low alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels, and iron-based superalloy was analyzed based on facture mechanics in 45MPa, 85MPa, and 105MPa hydrogen and air. Cylindrical model was used and the wall thickness of the model was calculated following five regulations including the High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan (KHK) designated equipment inspection regulation, KHKS 0220, Chinese special equipment regulation (TSG) R0002, Chinese machinery industrial standard (JB) 4732, and ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 3. Design fatigue life for four typical model materials was also analyzed to discuss the effect of ultimate tensile strength, pressure, regulations and hydrogen sensitivity on the design fatigue life in hydrogen. It was discussed that hydrogen influence decreases with decreasing pressure or ultimate tensile strength. The design fatigue life data of the model materials under the conditions of pressure, ultimate tensile strength, K-IH, fatigue crack growth rates, and regulations in both hydrogen and air were proposed quantitatively for materials selection for high-pressure hydrogen storage vessels.

Abstract:Submarine pipeline is one of the important facilities of marine oil development. It is very important to make a fracture safety assessment on it. In this paper, the application of failure assessment diagram(FAD) technology, the fracture safety assessment of three grades and the fatigue assessment included in the BS7910:1999 Standard are introduced in detail. With the fracture assessment method, we can make a fracture assessment on the flawed pipeline under stresses, and achieve the maximum length of the flaw in the pipeline. With the fatigue assessment method, we can make a fatigue assessment on the flawed pipeline under dynamic stresses, and achieve the pipeline's fatigue life.

Abstract:More and more pressure vessels constructed from spheroidal graphite cast iron are used in recent years result from the excellent mechanic and cast characteristic of spheroidal graphite cast iron.Not only ASME Ⅷ-1 and EN 13445-6 are focused,but also some native related standards and regulations are taken into the comparison such as TSG R0004—2009.Main parts of the standards like scope,materials,design,founding,inspection and testing of castings are compared to find the similarities and differences in the paper.The comparison shows a great advantageous in design by analysis,assessment of fatigue life and non-destructive inspection of EN 13445-6.Also some suggestions are made to the preparation of releasing our native standards for pressure vessels constructed from spheroidal graphite cast iron.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. To improve the fatigue performance of high-pressure hydrogen storage vessels, a method is proposed to determine the optimal autofrettage pressure of the vessel using numerical simulation and experimental verification. First, a finite element model considering the actual structure of the vessel is established based on grid theory. Then, the effect of autofrettage pressure on the equivalent alternating stress amplitude of liner under cyclic fatigue load is studied by using the modified equation of Smith–Watson–Topper mean stress. Lastly, the optimum autofrettage pressure is determined according to the DOT-CFFC and CGH2R standards, and the fatigue life is predicted. The results show that under the optimum autofrettage pressure, the bearing capacity of the liner under working pressure and the fatigue life under fatigue cycle load are increased by 74% and 12 times, respectively. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulation results, with an average error of 6.3%. This research has important reference significance for the preliminary design stage of composite vessels.

Abstract:Increasing attention has been paid on fatigue performance evaluation in the recent years. More efficient fatigue testing methods are imperatively needed to accomplish the test requirement. The modified staircase theory is introduced in this paper. Traditional staircase method and modified staircase method are respectively used to evaluate the fatigue performance of pressure vessel steel Q345R. Results show the fatigue limits are 194MPa and 193MPa respectively, which indicates the modified staircase method can enhance the testing efficiency about 50% and keep the test veracity.

Abstract:Since most pressure pipe materials have good toughness, the failure mode of pipe is usually the plastic failure controlled by limit load. The incomplete welding defect is very common in the pipe, and its existence will reduce the load-carrying capacity of pipes. The pipe with incomplete welding defects can be continued using only after passing the appropriate safety assessment, so the research on safety assessment procedure for pressure pipe with incomplete welding defects under combined bending, torsion and internal pressure loadings has a great theoretical and practical engineering value.By using theoretical analyzing method of plastic limit load, the plastic limit load of pressure pipe with different defect size or pipe diameter ratio are calculated in this paper, then safety assessment curved surface and its express equation are obtained by fitting calculation data. Finally a safety assessment procedure is developed for pressure pipes under combined bending, torsion and internal pressure loadings according to the curved surface.
Hot Spot Stress Approach For Fatigue Life Assessment In Welded Bridge Connections Using Monitoring Data And Fem Analysis

Abstract:This paper presents a study of using long-term monitoring data and the hot spot stress approach for fatigue life assessment of a suspension steel bridge installed with a long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) system. First, a global finite element model (FEM) of the bridge and a local FEM for typical welded connections are developed using the general-purpose commercial software ABAQUS. Hot spot stresses and stress concentration factors (SCFs) at failure-critical locations are calculated by means of the surface extrapolation technique with FEM analysis. Then the hot spot stress approach is applied to evaluate the fatigue life of welded details by using the strain measurement data from the long-term monitoring system. The fatigue assessment results obtained by the hot spot stress approach are also compared with those obtained by the nominal stress approach.

Abstract:In support of the ASME Div 2 Rewrite, a master S-N curve approach has been developed using a mesh-insensitive structural stress procedure for fatigue evaluation of welded components. The effectiveness of the master S-N curve approach has been demonstrated in a number of earlier publications for many joint types and loading conditions for pipe and vessel components as well as plate joints. To further validate the structural stress method, a series of recent test data (small weld details and a full-scale vessel) published by De Jesus et al. (2004, Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, 27, pp. 799–810) were analyzed in this paper. A comparative assessment of various existing procedures and their effectiveness in correlating the fatigue test data by De Jesus is also presented. These assessment procedures include current ASME Sec. VIII Div 2, weld classification approach in PD 5500, and the surface extrapolation-based hot spot stress approach in recently approved European EN 13445 Standards.

Abstract:The Fatigue Design Assessment (FDA) procedure is a part of Ship Right design, construction and lifetime ship care procedures developed by Lloyds Register. The work presented in this paper is on the application of a Stress Concentration Factor (SCF) approach to the FDA procedure to develop an effective and user friendly tool for the assessment of fatigue performance of cut-outs in transverse web frames for longitudinal stiffeners. Investigation of hull damage statistics has identified that fatigue cracking in way of cut-outs and end brackets of longitudinal stiffeners affects a reasonable proportion of ships in service. This can become an ongoing 'through life' maintenance issue as defects can re-occur if the design of the structural detail has insufficient fatigue performance. A spectral fatigue assessment of this structural detail has traditionally been based on localised mesh refinement applied to a global finite element (FE) model and hydrodynamic calculated using first principle methods. These traditional methods are time, resource and labour intensive processes and therefore limited in its application. The SCF approach developed offers a faster and simpler method for the determination of hotspot stresses for standardised cut-out details.

Abstract:According to the Guide for Building and Classing Membrane Tank LNG Vessels of ABS,the finite element model had been built and the fatigue strength assessment of a LNG vessel had been carried out with nominal stress method and hot spot stress method based on the fatigue accumulating damage concept of S-N curve approach.Additionally,the influence of low temperature on the fatigue life was discussed.The outcome showed that it is reasonable to use S-N curve obtained under normal temperature in Fatigue Strength Assessment of LNG vessel.

Abstract:Traditional design approaches using safety factors are intended to account for uncertainties due to the lack of available data in engineering practice. However, the direct use of safety factor to represent uncertainties often causes conservative results, and it is not intuitive to describe the reliability of these structures through safety factor. To deal with the issue, this research revisits the initial consideration and intent of the safety factor for static strength and adjustment factor for fatigue design curve in the ASME code. Three conversion models applying to reactor pressure vessel (RPV) materials are proposed on basis of the stress–strength, load–life and strength–damage interference theories, which elaborate the relationship between safety/adjustment factors and structural reliability. The dispersion of strength and fatigue life is quantified, and then implemented to elaborate safety and adjustment factors with reliability respectively, which verifies the validity of safety assessment methods in the ASME code. Moreover, the safety/adjustment factor design under required reliability level is achieved, has the advantages of intuitiveness and convenience, which provides a reference for the reliability and safety design of RPV.

Abstract:Subsea pipelines have been used to carry oil or gas produced from fields that lie under the sea to shore. The girth welds in subsea pipelines are subjected to combined stresses in most of their service life. However, limited research was reported on fatigue crack growth for connections under such combined loads. This paper summarizes a recent study on fatigue of subsea pipelines under combined actions. It covers the prediction of natural frequency, stress analysis, fatigue testing, prediction and numerical simulation of fatigue life. Finally the carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening technique to improve the fatigue life of such connections is presented.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the fatigue life of ring-welded lap joints of stainless steel with various geometries. It involves welding morphologies observations, static and fatigue tests under tensile-shear loading, and fatigue life evaluation based on fracture mechanics approach. Test results show that the interfacial failure occurs for each specimen under the static loading, and the static strength increases with an increase in weld area, as well as the degree of bending deformation during the test. In addition, three failure modes were identified under fatigue loadings, with crack propagation from the weld root to the weld metal surface accounting for over 90% of the fatigue life for most specimens. Taking into account the fatigue failure modes, a fracture mechanics-based method was used to unify the F a - N f curves of ring-welded lap joints with different geometries. This unified curve considers the effects of specimen geometries, crack length, loading ratio, and bending deformation. The analysis demonstrates that the fatigue life of ring-welded lap joints increases with an increase in the thickness of the sheet with a hole and the hole diameter, while decreases with the increasing loading ratio and bending deformation. By utilizing this method, the predicted fatigue life of various ring-welded lap joints can be controlled within a range that is four times of the measured values.

Engineering assessment method for LBB stability analysis in pressure vessels and pipes

Abstract:Based on the engineering approximate relation, in reference, between tearing instability stress and plastic collapse stress under simple loading for circumferential throughwall crack of pipes, a new approximate relation between them under combined loading is established. By the new approximate relation, the engineering assessments for 4 materials and 40 crack configurations and loading status are carried out. The results are in agreements with those of precise analytical method in reference. It is believed that the new engineering assessment method can certainly play an important role in LBB stability analysis for pressure vessels and pipes.

Abstract:The fatigue life of autofrettaged thick-walled cylinders with a radial cross-bore is investigated by applying inelastic finite element analysis with cyclic pressure loading. A non-linear kinematic hardening model considering bauschinger effect is used for determining cyclic plastic strain ranges in fatigue evaluations. A macro is written in ANSYS to calculate the equivalent alternating stress intensity, based on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. For a specific cyclic load level, a distinct optimum autofrettage pressure is identified by plotting autofrettage pressure against the equivalent alternating stress intensity and the number of cycles from design fatigue data. The optimum autofrettage pressure was found in the range of 80.5%-92.5% of limit pressure. The hydrotest had little influence on the fatigue life when the thick-walled cylinder was autofrettaged with an optimum autofrettage pressure.
Calculation of Stress Intensity Factor in Typical Fatigue Assessment for Container Ships

Abstract:In the fatigue crack growth theory based fatigue assessment method, fatigue hot spots need to be identified and stress intensity factor of crack should be determined accurately. In this paper, fatigue assessment nodes defined in CCS Standard are divided into four categories: weld toe of butt-joints and T-joints, bottom plate of bracket toe, bracket plate of bracket toe, and intersection point of three perpendicular components. The SIFs of surface cracks at the first three categories are analyzed with 3D FEA and compared with the results of SIF magnification factors calculated with equations recommended in BS7910.The results show that the SIF magnification factors of surface crack at first category is close to that of BS7910, while the results of second and third categories are quite different from BS7910. Correction formulas are proposed respectively for second and third categories, and the results show well agreement with that from FEA.
