Abstract:The Biological Aerated Filter(BAF) has many advantages, such as small volume, high treatment efficiency, good effluent quality and simple process. The biggest characteristic of it is using granular media. The removal mechanism is filtration, absorption and biological efficiency. The height of granular media has an important effect on removal efficiency. The reserch results showed that removal percent is positively interrelated to the height of media. In the upper 37cm, the removal efficiency is very high. The test showed that when the media height is 37cm, the removal efficiency for SS, COD, BOD5, NH 3-N and T-N is 70%, 82. 5%, 66.95%, 53. 6% and 50.2% respectively under the hydrolic rate of 0.53m/h.

Abstract:The macroporous carrier FPUFS and special microorganisms(B350) were used in a biological aerated filter(BAF) to form a Gaia-BAF(G-BAF) and treat polluted river water.The system was continuously operated for 93 days at different hydraulic retention time(HRT).In the later experimental stage,when HRT is 2 h,the average removal rates of turbidity,CODMn,NH+4-N and TP are 93.4%,55.6%,95.8% and 71.5% respectively.The effluent quality can reach the grade Ⅲ of Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water(GB 3838-2002).The results of ESEM and GC/MS show that there are lots of cocci,bacilli,protozoan and metazoan species immobilized on the surface of carriers,which can enhance the removal effect of nitrogen,phosphorus and refractory organic compounds.

Abstract:The combined process of ozone and biological aerated filter(BAF) was used to treat secondary biologically treated effluent from a tannery park wastewater treatment plant.The running performances of BAFs with different media were investigated during the biofilm growth period.The pollutants removal performance and mechanisms of BAFs with different media at ozone dosage of 25 mg/L were explored.Three BAFs operating in parallel were filled with activated carbon,ceramsite and mixture of activated carbon and ceramsite with 1 ∶ 1 volume ratio.The COD removal rates of BAF with activated carbon and BAF with the mixture first decreased,then increased and finally stabilized during the biofilm growth period.After 32 d,the effluent COD was below 60 mg/L in both reactors.The COD removal efficiency of the ceramsite BAF was not significant.During the steady state operation of the activated carbon BAF,the average COD and color were decreased from 117 mg/L and 112.5 times in the influent to 50 mg/L and 6 times in the effluent,which met the first level B criteria specified in the Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant(GB 18918-2002).In the same period,biomasses in the activated carbon,mixture and ceramsite BAFs were 30.69 nmol/g,25.87 nmol/g and 15.18 nmol/g respectively.

Abstract:The performance of O3-BAF process was studied for advanced treatment of paper mill secondary effluent. Results show that preozonation could destroy the molecular structure of refractory organic pollutants, and substantially increase the biodegradability of wastewater, where B/C ratio was increased from 0.21 to 0.45. Pollutants could be deeply removed by O3-BAF process, COD and turbidity were removed through the multiple activities of both ozone unit and BAF unit, NH3-N was mainly removed through biological nitrification activity of BAF unit, while UV254and colority were degraded mainly through the effect of ozone unit. After advanced treatment, the effluent could meet the newly issued discharge standard of water pollutants for pulp and paper industry.

Abstract:Biological aerated filter (BAF) with porcelain beads as carrier was used for pretreatment of the high ammonia nitrogen content source water. The result shows that under the air/water ratio of 1∶1, filter velocity of 5.5 m/h, water temperature higher than 10 ℃, and influent ammonia nitrogen less than 5 mg/L, the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen is 70%-90%, with some nitrite accumulated in the reactor. Backwash cycle has more effect on ammonia nitrogen removal rate.

Abstract:Two-stage of Biological aerated filter bed was used in serie for pretreatment of the water of Xin Yunliang River.The removal effect of CODCr and ammonia was studied in the experiment in winter at low temperature,and the pH value was also monitored.The results showed that at influent flow rate of 2.4 m3?d-1,water tempreture of 13~16 ℃,the CODCr between 66.46~107.82 mg·L-1,the ammonia nitrogen between 22.15~30.68 mg·L-1 and the effluent dissolved oxygen of not less 3.5 mg·L-1,the removal rate of CODCr and ammonia nitrogen were 36.08%~50.37% and 76.98%~93.56% respectively.In the two-stage biological aerated filter,the concentration of nitrogen nitrogen increased significantly and there was no nitrite nitrogen accumulated.The total removal of the total nitrogen was 19.56%,and it could be considered the result of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.The pH value fluctuated between 7~8.The good removal effect for the CODCr and ammonia nitrogen provided suitable conditions for further biological treatment.

Abstract:<p>As one of the black and odorous water treatment bioremediation technologies, the biological filter has been widely used due to its high efficiency, low cost and no secondary pollution. It has achieved certain effects when repairing black and odorous water bodies in some areas of my country. In this paper, two sets of multi-media biological filters were designed and the carrier was modified to strengthen the performance of the carrier and effectively remove the chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), dissolved organic matter (DOM) and other pollutants in the black and odorous water. In this paper, the biological carriers on the market were modified The method studied the Biofilter 1 system based on the modified biological carrier and the Biofilter 2 system based on the unmodified carrier on the market under different hydraulic loading rate (HLR) conditions. Next, the removal effect of conventional pollutants (COD, TOC, TN, NH<sub>4</sub>), and the influence on the composition and structural characteristics of DOM are analyzed, and the removal mechanism of pollutants is analyzed. By comparing the operating effects of BF1 and BF2, it is found that with the increase of HLR, the pollutant removal rate of the two systems both increased first and then decreased. The removal effect of BF1 was better than that of BF2, and the impact load resistance of the modified carrier in the BF1 system was stronger than that of the unmodified BF2 system.</p>

Abstract:The pilot test in which municipal sewage is treated by biological aerated filter (BAF) with burned clay pellets as microorganism carriers is carried out with scale of 12m~3 /d .The effects of filtration velocity, gas-to-sewage ratio, overloading and backwashing on the performance of BAF are investigated. The results show: (1) under the conditions of sewage temperature range of (20～23.5)℃,filtration velocity range of (6.09～8.21)m/h,gas-to-sewage ratio of 1∶1 for biocarbone aerated filter and 2∶1 for bio-nitrification filter,the effluent of BAF reach the water standards for miscellaneous use in living from COD (120～338)mg/L and NH~+ 4-N(30.0～53.6)mg/L of influent of BAF ;(2) overloading and backwashing have no remarkable effects on the quality of effluent.

Abstract:A pilot research on removals of ammonia-nitrogen and organics from micro pollution water source by UBAF was carried out.It was showed that UBAF had high removal rate for ammonia-nitrogen,nitrite and Mn;specially it had stronger nitrification ability;under the conditions of influent ammonia-nitrogen being 2mg/L,UBAF could operate under the hydraulic load of flow rate 16m/h and the removal rate was greater than 84%.The removal rate of permanganate index by UBAF averaged 10%;the removal rate of AOC was 58%;after pretreatment by UBAF,the dosage of coagulant could save by about 30%;the removal rate of chloroform in water by UBAF was lower.

Abstract:Biomass wastewater contains plenty of cellulose, hemicellulose, starch, saccharide, organic acid and protein. It has high COD value and leads to environment pollution and resource waste. Biomass wastewater was treated in this investigate using a biological aerated filter (BAF) on laboratory scale, and the effect of treatment in different hydraulic retention time (HRT) had been studied. The results show that the optimum HRT is 10 h. The value of COD and TN in effluent is 74.90 mg/L and 1.21 mg/L respectively when run 10 h, which are under the highest concentration of the second category of pollutant discharge allowed in the state sewage discharge standard (GB 8978-1996). When the system is stabile, evaluating the population characteristics of dominating microorganism in BAF with biology analysis such as microbial screening, single bacteria evaluation and 16S rDNA sequences analysis. The dominant bacteria belonged to Pseudomonas sp., Acinetobacer sp., Stenotrophomonas sp., Rhodococcus sp.and Microbacterium sp..
Effect of modified biological aerated filter on nitrogen removal of domestic wastewater

Abstract:The aeration system installed in the middle of BAF was used for domestic wastewater treatment.Gas-to-liquid ratios、organic loadings and microbes along the reactor of BAF were investigated.Results indicate that the good performance of BAF can be achieved at hydraulic retention time 8 h,gas-to-liquid ratio 10∶1,the average removal rates of COD,TN,NH+4-N in optimal stage are 92.5%,48.6% and 69.4%,respectively.Higher organic loadings result in lower efficiencies of COD、NH+4-N removal,but the efficiency of TN removal increases to 60.5%.Based on experimental results and theoretical analysis,the mechanism of TN removal was probed.

Abstract:The high-strength municipal sewage was treated by the two-stage Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) pilot system with microorganism carrier of burned clay pellet. The effects of hydraulic loading rate, aeration ratio, overloading, backwashing and the height of media on the performance of BAF were investigated. In higher hydraulic loading and lower ratio of aeration, the two-stage BAF may decrease effluent COD, NH4(+)-N and SS to less than 50 mg/L, 8.0 mg/L and 20 mg/L respectively. Moreover, the operation stability was not affected remarkably by the instantaneous overloading and periodical backwashing. The backwashing step by step was proposed to save energy and infrastructural investment. In addition, the dynamic expressions for file COD and NH4+-N removal were deduced respectively.

Abstract:The biological slow filtration (BSF) system as a simple and efficient environmental technology has been widely applied in treatment of ‘micro-polluted’ water. At present, many related studies have focused on the removal efficiency of biological indicators (such as bacteria and viruses). However, there is less research on the removal performance of nutrients and organics in the BSF system. In this paper, we employed a lab-scale biological slow filter to study the removal efficiency and degradation mechanism of nutrients and organics. We proved through adsorption of filter layer at the early running stage and biodegradation at the later stage, the BSF system could achieve effective removal of NH3-N, TN, TP, CODMn and turbidity and the corresponding removal rates are 83.65%, 42.45%, 42.94%, 60.41% and 83.55%, respectively. Furthermore, we also explored the influence of four main factors (filtration rate, filter depth, hydraulic head and temperature) and their interactions on removal rates of nutrients and organics in the BSF system and obtained the optimal operating parameters as follows: filtration rate 0.1 m/h, filter depth 0.8 m, hydraulic head 0.64 m, temperature 26.06 °C. This study would provide a theoretical foundation for the actual application of biological slow filter in treatment of micro-polluted water in developing countries and offer an optimized basis for the design of operating conditions.

Abstract:The effect of immobilized microorganism technique on the micro-polluted river water was studied by four kinds of gaia-biological aerated filter (G-BAF), which were formed by special microorganism (BP35) and four different carriers, including haydite, FPUFS, aquamats flexible carrier and artificial aquatic mat. The removal rates of NH_4~+ -N, chlorophyll and turbidity were 83.0%-89.0% , 77.5%-89.0% and 84.4%-95.2% , respectively, and they were all higher than the removal rates of COD, UV_(254) and TP. The FPUFS contained reactive groups, such as hydroxyl, epoxy and acylamide groups, which made FPUFS load a great amount of enzymes and microorganisms. Therefore, the removal rates of pollutants for FPUFS-G-BAF were higher than those for the other three kinds of G-BAF. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) had little effect on the removal rate of NH_4~+ -N, while affected the removal rate of COD significantly. When the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) increased from < 2 mg/L to >4mg/L, for the four kinds of G-BAF, the removal rates of COD and NH_4~+-N increased 11.9%-18.0% and 12.7%-16.1%, respectively. The result of GC-MS showed that the technique of G-BAF could effectively degrade the macro-molecule refractory organics into small-molecule substance.

Abstract:An up-flow ceramsite media biological aerated filter(BAF) was used for dyeing wastewater advanced treatment. Twice start-up method was employed and then the BAF reactorhad been operated steadily for160 days, while the removal efficency of COD and NH3-N was investigated on the condition of low B/C value and lacking of nutrients. Results showed that the reactorachieved mean degradation efficiency of 51.3%～56.5%forCOD and 86.5%～93.7%forNH3-N when the air/waterratio was 5:1 and hydraulic loading was 0.5 m3·m-2·h-1. The total nitrogen(TN) in this study showed slight degradation and the NO3--N was the major degradation production.The concentration of COD and NH3-N in the effluent was 39.6～45.3 mg·L-1 and 0.11～0.24 mg·L-1, respectively. The GC-MS showed that the pollutants in wastewater included butylated hydroxytoluene, cedrol, phthalic acid, and alkanes with a straight chain form nine to twenty seven. All the pollutants were bilological degraded in BAF, but the major pollutants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and cedrol still had 65.0%and 39.2%retention.

Abstract:Water resources of many rural areas are usually lakes or reservoirs, which can be easily affected by run-off, non-point source pollution and are often of poorer quality compared with urban water sources. Drinking water supply in remote rural areas usually suffers from various challenges, such as the high cost of construction and maintenance of centralized drinking water treatment plants and pipe networks, due to the dispersed nature of villages, which are often located in varied and complex topographies. In this study, a combined process comprising biological aerated filter (BAF) combined with ultrafiltration was developed to treat polluted reservoir water. Organic matter indexes, turbidity, and chroma were used as indicators for the evaluation of the system performance. In a long-term experiment lasting 260 days, the combined process was tested under different values of critical operational parameters, including filler types and empty bed contact time (EBCT). Furthermore, the microbial communities in different BAF reactors were carefully evaluated at different times, finding that microorganisms with specific functions were enriched in the various BAF reactors. The combined process reached 85.5 % removal rate of DOC with an EBCT of 45 min and using granule active carbon (GAC) as filler. Most of the effluents of BAF reactors met the requirements for drinking water in China. The combined system showed practical potential for polluted water treatment in some rural areas.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a biofilter in which aeration process was not performed while adequate pure oxygen was dissolved into the influent before it was pumped to the biofilter.Two bio-ceramic filters were used in the experiment.The conventional aeration means was used in one bio-ceramic filter(BF-A) and raw water was pumped directly to the filter.At the same time,raw water was oversaturated by pure oxygen before it was pumped to another bio-ceramic filter(BF-B) and aeration was not performed in the filter.It was shown that dissolved oxygen in the influent of BF-B met the demand of microorganism in BF-B and the capability of BF-B to remove pollutants in raw water was superior to BF-A.This result indicated the significance of developing appropriate bubbleless aeration device fitting for oxygenation in biological treatment process of drinking water from the point of view of the biological treatment performance.

Abstract:The biggest characteristic of the biological aerated filter (BAF) is using a kind of granular media. The research results show that the performance of the brewery wastewater treatment with BAF is excellent. When COD volumetric loading is 10kg/(m 3 · d), under the hydraulic rate of 0. 8m/h, 1.4m/h and 2.5m/h, the COD concentration of effluent is below 59mg/L, 82mg/L and 51mg/L respectively, and the BOD 5 concentration of effluent is below 21mg/L, 38mg/L and 24mg/L when BOD 5 loading is 6kg/(m 3 · d). This research also get the conclusion that the effluent COD concentration increases linearly with the organic load.
