Abstract:Language understanding is a key scientific issue in the fields of cognitive and computer science. However, the two disciplines differ substantially in the specific research questions. Cognitive science focuses on analyzing the specific mechanism of the brain and investigating the brain's response to language; few studies have examined the brain's language system as a whole. By contrast, computer scientists focus on the efficiency of practical applications when choosing research questions but may ignore the most essential laws of language. Given these differences, can a combination of the disciplines offer new insights for building intelligent language models and studying language cognitive mechanisms? In the following text, we first review the research questions, history, and methods of language understanding in cognitive and computer science, focusing on the current progress and challenges. We then compare and contrast the research of language understanding in cognitive and computer sciences. Finally, we review existing work that combines insights from language cognition and language computation and offer prospects for future development trends.

Abstract:The paper discusses the theory of relevance, advanced in the middle of the 1980s by Dan Sperber and Deidra Wilson, in the context of opposition between the proponents of “ideal language philosophy”, or formal semantics, and adherents of “ordinary language philosophy”. Though the theory was created as a version of cognitive pragmatics, an area at the junction of cognitive sciences and theoretical linguistics, it is of undoubted interest for philosophical comprehension of language, verbal communication, and the nature of meaning. Treating verbal communication as a cognitive process, Sperber and Wilson formulate the two most important principles underlying the process – the cognitive principle of relevance and the communicative principle of relevance. The paper explains the basic notions of the theory – ostensive communication, informative and communicative intentions, optimal relevance, explicature; it reveals the advantages that the authors of the theory see in the “inferential” model of communication over the “code” model and discusses how they present the process of understanding a speaker’s utterance by a hearer on the “implicit” and “explicit” levels and what role in the process they ascribe to pragmatic inferences. The account of the relevance theory is accompanied by its comparison with the picture of verbal communication elaborated by Paul Grice, and it is shown that though Sperber and Wilson make a start from Grice’s ideas in many respects, they introduce significant alterations and so they are regarded as representatives of post-Gricean pragmatics. In conclusion, it is examined how, according to the relevance theory, the semantics/pragmatics distinction should be drawn. It is discussed how the proposed decision alters the understanding of the nature of meaning and what consequences it has for philosophy.

Abstract:Relevance theory has long been taken as a theory focusing on hearer's recognition of intention and her/his inference of speaker's implicatures based on explicatures. Recently, Kecskes (2010) takes a new Socio-cognitive Approach (SCA) to pragmatics based on his critique of relevance theory. In this paper, we argue that his critique is flawed on several points. First, the hearer-centered notion of relevance is not completely correct. Rather, relevance theory does not ignore speaker's role in the course of communication. We analyze the process of metaphor interpretation to show that relevance theory is a full-fledged theory taking into consideration the roles of both speaker and hearer in communication. Second, the motivation problem is not totally ignored by relevance theory, either. We argue that there have been three pressures to motivate metaphor interpretation as well as communication, namely, the pressure of being relevant, the pressure of embodiment and the pressure of context, which constitute the three primary motivations for metaphor interpretation.

Abstract:Relevance Theory (RT) argues that human language comprehension processes tend to maximize “relevance,” and postulates that there is a relevance-based procedure that a hearer follows when trying to understand an utterance. Despite being highly influential, RT has been criticized for its failure to explain how speaker-related information, either the speaker’s abilities or her/his preferences, is incorporated into the hearer’s inferential, pragmatic process. An alternative proposal is that speaker-related information gains prominence due to representation of the speaker within higher level goal-directed schemata. Yet the goal-based account is still unable to explain clearly how cross-domain information, for example linguistic meaning and speaker-related knowledge, is integrated within a modular system. On the basis of RT’s cognitive requirements, together with contemporary cognitive theory, we argue that this integration is realized by utilizing working memory and that there exist conversational constraints with which the constructed utterance interpretation should be consistent. We illustrate our arguments with a computational implementation of the proposed processes within a general cognitive architecture. Abstract:Relevance plays a central role in information retrieval (IR), which has received extensive studies starting from the 20th century. The definition and the modeling of relevance has always been critical challenges in both information science and computer science research areas. Along with the debate and exploration on relevance, IR has already become a core task in many real-world applications, such as Web search engines, question answering systems, conversational bots, and so on. While relevance acts as a unified concept in all these retrieval tasks, the inherent definitions are quite different due to the heterogeneity of these tasks. This raises a question to us: Do these different forms of relevance really lead to different modeling focuses? To answer this question, in this work, we conduct an empirical study on relevance modeling in three representative IR tasks, i.e., document retrieval, answer retrieval, and response retrieval. Specifically, we attempt to study the following two questions: 1) Does relevance modeling in these tasks really show differences in terms of natural language understanding (NLU)? We employ 16 linguistic tasks to probe a unified retrieval model over these three retrieval tasks to answer this question. 2) If there do exist differences, how can we leverage the findings to enhance the relevance modeling? We proposed three intervention methods to investigate how to leverage different modeling focuses of relevance to improve these IR tasks. We believe the way we study the problem as well as our findings would be beneficial to the IR community.

Abstract:Pragmatic ambivalence refers to a linguistic phenomenon in which the communicator uses vague or ambiguous words to convey the illocutionary force to the other party in a specific context. It is an indispensable communicative strategy for successful communication in daily communication activities. Relevance theory can explain pragmatic ambivalence from three aspects: intentional relevance, contextual relevance and relevance reasoning. Therefore, relevance theory has strong explanatory power and applicability for pragmatic ambivalence as a communicative strategy. Using relevance theory to study pragmatic ambivalence is conducive to people’s further understanding of pragmatic ambivalence as a linguistic phenomenon, and has a very positive significance for the research and development of ambivalence in pragmatics.

Abstract:This paper summarizes some common aspects between Relevance Theory(RT)and Chomskyan linguistics.It argues that both theories actually use a cognitive perspective in their study of particular phenomena;both lay special emphasis on the sub-personal system and set out to generalize abstract principles so as to explain those phenomena at the surface level.Also,highlighted is the principle of economy which plays a crucial role in both theories.This comparative study offers a new perspective for the current reflections on the criticisms of RT,and makes it possible to better reveal its problems and propose better solutions.

Abstract:The concept of relevance has been heatedly debated in last decade. Not satisfied with the narrow and technical definition of system relevance, researchers turn to the subjective and situational aspect of this concept. How does a user perceive a document as relevant? The literature on relevance has identified numerous factors affecting such judgment. Taking a cognitive approach, this study focuses on the criteria users employ in making relevance judgment. Based on Grice's theory of communication, this paper proposes a five-factor model of relevance: topicality, novelty, reliability, understandability, and scope. Data are collected from a semi-controlled survey study and analyzed following a psychometric procedure. The result supports topicality and novelty as the key relevance criteria. Theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

Abstract:A vital proposal from the relevance-theoretic pragmatics is that the information processing of the utterance stops once the expectation of relevance is either satisfied or abandoned.However,once we take into account the language user's ability and preference,abandonment of expectation of relevance becomes hard to come by,since the theory itself has never offered any feasible criteria to assess the usefulness of information and the cognitive effort which is theoretically utilized to measure degrees of relevance is too gross and could be re-measured on another cognitive level.

Abstract:In the context of the increasingly close exchanges between countries, audiovisual works have gradually become one of the mediums for cultural exchange between nations, posing higher demands on subtitle translation. As a theory of verbal communication, association theory has brought a new perspective to the study of translation and various other fields in recent years. Domestic research in this area has yet to form a comprehensive and systematic theory, lacking a certain degree of professionalism. Based on the main viewpoints of relevance theory, this study selects the Japanese film Love Letter as the research subject. The article’s main body adopts a literature analysis method, outlining translation principles such as maximum relevance and optimal relevance and applying a case study method to analyze the impact of translation methods on communicative effectiveness under semantic significance, cultural relevance, and situational relevance. The research indicates that relevance theory serves as an effective principle for guiding subtitle translation; translators need to fully understand the source context and appropriately adjust the subtitle content in conjunction with the target context, minimizing changes to the source language while ensuring that the target language audience fully comprehends the plot to achieve optimal relevance. It is hoped that this study can contribute to enriching related research in subtitle translation.
The Study of Humor Utterance Translation in The Big Bang Theory from the Perspective of Relevance Theory

Abstract:The Big Bang Theory has been a popular American sitcom. Humorous utterance greatly contributes to its success. This paper tries to discuss the humorous utterance translation from the perspective of Relevance Theory in detail. The paper firstly introduces the generative mechanism of humorous utterance from the perspective of Relevance Theory; then it discusses the applicability of Relevance Theory on humor translation; at last, it points out some subtitling translation strategies in The Big Bang Theory from the perspective of Relevance Theory, namely, Gutt's direct translation and indirect translation, and illustrates the specific translation methods, that is, literal translation and annotation that belong to direct translation as well as supplement, replacement and omission that belong to indirect translation.

Abstract:Legal case retrieval, which aims to retrieve relevant cases given a query case, has drawn increasing research attention in recent years. While much research has worked on developing automatic retrieval models, how to characterize relevance in this specialized information retrieval (IR) task is still an open question. Towards an in-depth understanding of relevance judgments, we conduct a laboratory user study that involves 72 participants of different domain expertise. In the user study, we collect the relevance score along with detailed explanations for the relevance judgment and various measures of the judgment process. From the collected data, we observe that both the subjective (e.g., domain expertise) and objective (e.g., query/case property) factors influence the relevance judgment process. By investigating the collected user explanations, we identify task-specific patterns of user attention distribution and re-think the criteria for relevance judgments. Moreover, we investigate the similarity in attention distribution between models and users. Further, we propose a two-stage framework that utilizes user attention to improve relevance estimation for legal case retrieval. Our study sheds light on understanding relevance judgments in legal case retrieval and provides implications for improving the design of corresponding retrieval systems.
