Abstract:We study the metric properties of finite subsets of L_1. The analysis of such metrics is central to a number of important algorithmic problems involving the cut structure of weighted graphs, including the Sparsest Cut Problem, one of the most compelling open problems in the field of approximation algorithms. Additionally, many open questions in geometric non-linear functional analysis involve the properties of finite subsets of L_1.

Abstract:We consider general structures where formulas have truth values in the real unit interval as in continuous model theory, but whose predicates and functions need not be uniformly continuous with respect to a distance predicate. Every general structure can be expanded to a pre-metric structure by adding a distance predicate that is a uniform limit of formulas. Moreover, that distance predicate is unique up to uniform equivalence. We use this to extend the central notions in the model theory of metric structures to general structures, and show that many model-theoretic results from the literature about metric structures have natural analogues for general structures.

Abstract:A Smarandache multi-space is a union of $n$ different spaces equipped with some different structures for an integer $n\geq 2$, which can be both used for discrete or connected spaces, particularly for geometries and spacetimes in theoretical physics. This paper is the first part on characterizing multi-spaces. Various algebraic multi-spaces with structures such as those of multi-groups, multi-rings, multi-vector spaces, multi-metric spaces, multi-operation systems are discussed and new results are obtained.

Abstract:Motivated by ideas from the model theory of metric structures, we introduce a metric set theory, $\mathsf{MSE}$, which takes bounded quantification as primitive and consists of a natural metric extensionality axiom (the distance between two sets is the Hausdorff distance between their extensions) and an approximate, non-deterministic form of full comprehension (for any real-valued formula $\varphi(x,y)$, tuple of parameters $a$, and $r < s$, there is a set containing the class $\{x: \varphi(x,a) \leq r\}$ and contained in the class $\{x:\varphi(x,a) < s\}$). We show that $\mathsf{MSE}$ is sufficient to develop classical mathematics after the addition of an appropriate axiom of infinity. We then construct canonical representatives of well-order types and prove that ultrametric models of $\mathsf{MSE}$ always contain externally ill-founded ordinals, conjecturing that this is true of all models. To establish several independence results and, in particular, consistency, we construct a variety of models, including pseudo-finite models and models containing arbitrarily large standard ordinals. Finally, we discuss how to formalize $\mathsf{MSE}$ in either continuous logic or Łukasiewicz logic.

We develop the mathematical foundations for these structures, and show in experiments how it can be used to find fuzzy domains and to improve accuracy in data classification problems.

Abstract:We give a new, direct proof of the tetrachotomy classification for the model-checking problem of positive equality-free logic parameterised by the model. The four complexity classes are Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete. The previous proof of this result relied on notions from universal algebra and core-like structures called U-X-cores. This new proof uses only relations, and works for infinite structures also in the distinction between Logspace and NP-hard under Turing reductions. For finite domains, the membership in NP and co-NP follows from a simple argument, which breaks down already over an infinite set with a binary relation. We develop some interesting new algorithms to solve NP and co-NP membership for a variety of infinite structures. We begin with those first-order definable in (Q;=), the so-called equality languages, then move to those first-order definable in (Q;<), the so-called temporal languages. However, it is first-order expansions of the Random Graph (V,E) that provide the most interesting examples. In all of these cases, the derived classification is a tetrachotomy between Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete.

Abstract:Following a review of metric, ultrametric and generalized ultrametric, we review their application in data analysis. We show how they allow us to explore both geometry and topology of information, starting with measured data. Some themes are then developed based on the use of metric, ultrametric and generalized ultrametric in logic. In particular we study approximation chains in an ultrametric or generalized ultrametric context. Our aim in this work is to extend the scope of data analysis by facilitating reasoning based on the data analysis; and to show how quantitative and qualitative data analysis can be incorporated into logic programming.

This metric stems from algebraic properties of [math]. From this perspective, for [math] we explore common research themes in metric spaces, reveal how peculiar properties naturally arise, and present it as a new type of example for certain well-studied questions.

Directed Metric Structures arising in Large Language Models

Abstract:Large Language Models are transformer neural networks which are trained to produce a probability distribution on the possible next words to given texts in a corpus, in such a way that the most likely word predicted is the actual word in the training text. In this paper we find what is the mathematical structure defined by such conditional probability distributions of text extensions. Changing the view point from probabilities to -log probabilities we observe that the subtext order is completely encoded in a metric structure defined on the space of texts $\mathcal{L}$, by -log probabilities. We then construct a metric polyhedron $P(\mathcal{L})$ and an isometric embedding (called Yoneda embedding) of $\mathcal{L}$ into $P(\mathcal{L})$ such that texts map to generators of certain special extremal rays. We explain that $P(\mathcal{L})$ is a $(\min,+)$ (tropical) linear span of these extremal ray generators. The generators also satisfy a system of $(\min+)$ linear equations. We then show that $P(\mathcal{L})$ is compatible with adding more text and from this we derive an approximation of a text vector as a Boltzmann weighted linear combination of the vectors for words in that text. We then prove a duality theorem showing that texts extensions and text restrictions give isometric polyhedra (even though they look a priory very different). Moreover we prove that $P(\mathcal{L})$ is the lattice closure of (a version of) the so called, Isbell completion of $\mathcal{L}$ which turns out to be the $(\max,+)$ span of the text extremal ray generators. All constructions have interpretations in category theory but we don't use category theory explicitly. The categorical interpretations are briefly explained in an appendix. In the final appendix we describe how the syntax to semantics problem could fit in a general well known mathematical duality.

In this paper, we study under which conditions the space of atoms of a finite metric Boolean algebra can be isometrically embedded in R N (for a certain N) equipped with the Euclidean metric. In particular, we characterize the topology of the positive measures over a finite algebra A such that the metric space ( At ( A ) , d m ) embeds isometrically in R N (with the Euclidean metric).

Quantitative Algebras and a Classification of Metric Monads

Abstract:Quantitative algebras are $\Sigma$-algebras acting on metric spaces, where operations are nonexpanding. Mardare, Panangaden and Plotkin introduced 1-basic varieties as categories of quantitative algebras presented by quantitative equations. We prove that for the category $\mathsf{UMet}$ of ultrametric spaces such varieties bijectively correspond to strongly finitary monads on $\mathsf{UMet}$. The same holds for the category $\mathsf{Met}$ of metric spaces, provided that strongly finitary endofunctors are closed under composition. For uncountable cardinals $\lambda$ there is an analogous bijection between varieties of $\lambda$-ary quantitative algebras and monads that are strongly $\lambda$-accessible. Moreover, we present a bijective correspondence between $\lambda$-basic varieties as introduced by Mardare et al and enriched, surjections-preserving $\lambda$-accesible monads on $\mathsf{Met}$. Finally, for general enriched $\lambda$-accessible monads on $\mathsf{Met}$ a bijective correspondence to generalized varieties is presented.

Abstract:We propose a new definition of quantum metric spaces, or W*-metric spaces, in the setting of von Neumann algebras. Our definition effectively reduces to the classical notion in the atomic abelian case, has both concrete and intrinsic characterizations, and admits a wide variety of tractable examples. A natural application and motivation of our theory is a mutual generalization of the standard models of classical and quantum error correction.

Abstract:We present a generalisation of the theory of quantitative algebras of Mardare, Panangaden and Plotkin where (i) the carriers of quantitative algebras are not restricted to be metric spaces and can be arbitrary fuzzy relations or generalised metric spaces, and (ii) the interpretations of the algebraic operations are not required to be nonexpansive. Our main results include: a novel sound and complete proof system, the proof that free quantitative algebras always exist, the proof of strict monadicity of the induced Free-Forgetful adjunction, the result that all monads (on fuzzy relations) that lift finitary monads (on sets) admit a quantitative equational presentation.

Species of structure and physical dimensions

Abstract:This study addresses the often underestimated importance of physical dimensions and units in the formal reconstruction of physical theories, focusing on structuralist approaches that use the concept of ``species of structure" as a meta-mathematical tool. Similar approaches also play a role in current philosophical debates on the metaphysical status of physical quantities. Our approach is already contained in an earlier suggestion by T. Tao. It involves the representation of fundamental physical quantities by one-dimensional real ordered vector spaces, while derived quantities are formulated using concepts from linear algebra, e.g., tensor products and dual spaces. As an introduction, the theory of Ohm's law is considered. We then formulate a reconstruction of the calculus of physical dimensions, including Buckingham's $\Pi$-theorem. Furthermore, an application of this method to the Newtonian theory of gravitating systems consisting of point particles is demonstrated, emphasizing the role of the automorphism group and its physical interpretations.

On Sharp Bounds of Local Fractional Metric Dimension for Certain Symmetrical Algebraic Structure Graphs

Abstract:The smallest set of vertices needed to differentiate or categorize every other vertex in a graph is referred to as the graph's metric dimension. Finding the class of graphs for a particular given metric dimension is an NP-hard problem. This concept has applications in many different domains, including graph theory, network architecture, and facility location problems. A graph $G$ with order $n$ is known as a Toeplitz graph over the subset $S$ of consecutive collections of integers from one to $n$, and two vertices will be adjacent to each other if their absolute difference is a member of $S$. A graph $G(\mathbb{Z}_{n})$ is called a zero-divisor graph over the zero divisors of a commutative ring $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$, in which two vertices will be adjacent to each other if their product will leave the remainder zero under modulo $n$. Since the local fractional metric dimension problem is NP-hard, it is computationally difficult to identify an optimal solution or to precisely determine the minimal size of a local resolving set; in the worst case, the process takes exponential time. Different upper bound sequences of local fractional metric dimension are suggested in this article, along with a comparison analysis for certain families of Toeplitz and zero-divisor graphs. Furthermore, we note that the analyzed local fractional metric dimension upper bounds fall into three metric families: constant, limited, and unbounded.
