Abstract:Since optical distortion has been a big trouble for various kinds of imaging systems, finding a simple correction method with wide applications is of significant importance. In this paper, we propose a unified and simple correction method, performing well for both photographic and projective imaging systems. The basic idea is regarding the optical distortion as geometrical deformation between the object and image, without considering the specific features of an optical system. First of all, a calibration template is employed to establish the geometrical transformation model (GTM) for the distortion of a built optical system. Two alternative algorithms are given to estimate the GTM in algebraic form. The computation is very simple because no intrinsic parameters of the optical system are needed to establish the GTM. Besides, the errors introduced by the fabricating and assembling process can be eliminated. Then, the corrected image of the photographic system or the pre-distorted image of the projective systems can be obtained accordingly utilizing the GTM. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with wide applications.
Accurate Geometric Correction of NOAA AVHRR Data Using Landsat Data

Abstract:This paper describes a new method for geometric correction of NOAA AVHRR data by using Landsat TM (Thematic Mapper) data. In this method, it mainly includes these procedures: (1) spatial degradation of Landsat TM data; (2) interpolation of AVHRR data; (3) preprocessing of degraded TM and interpolated AVHRR images; (4) image registration between the degraded TM image and interpolated AVHRR image at a same spatial resolution. With this method, we can get GCPs (Ground Control Points) and achieve subpixel accuracy in geolocation of GCPs; and then, using these GCPs to implement accurate geometric correction of NOAA AVHRR image, and achieve subpixel accuracy in geometric registration of AVHRR images.
A Fast Geometric Rectification of Remote Sensing Imagery Based on Feature Ground Control Point Database

Abstract:This paper, on the basis of the traditional design of database for ground control point, tries to founded a fast auto-correction method of satellite remote sensing imagery based on feature ground control point database which brings local feature points as the effective supplement and aims to achieve the automatic matching between feature ground control points and original images that need geometric correction and improve the rectified process utilizing random sample consensus (RANSAC algorithm). In this method, the author realize the auto-extraction of feature ground control points for ensuring speed and precise geometric correction of a high volume of satellite remote sensing images by means of analyzing feature ground control point database algorithm.

Abstract:Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has evolved into an essential Earth observation technique. Geometric quality is one of its most fundamental elements to ensure subsequent applications. Excellent localization accuracy requires comprehensive error compensation and calibration, while traditional calibration work is time-consuming and depends on the test sites. Besides, the available calibration test sites are scarce and unevenly distributed for certain SAR satellites. It is, hence, necessary to research how to make geometric calibration without ground control points (GCPs) for SAR. This study proposes a method utilizing the constraints of symmetric geometry that could cancel out plane error symmetrically and then calculates calibration constants combined with external digital elevation model (DEM). Experiments demonstrate that the calibration accuracy of the proposed way is approximately 0.3 m along range direction when all constraints are met, and the discrepancy between the proposed method and that using GCPs is analyzed. Generally, the method can achieve fast, labor-saving, and normalized calibration work for SAR images in the absence of available control data.

An Error-Based Block Adjustment Method For Multi-Angle Satellite Imagery Without Ground Control Points

Abstract:Geo-positioning accuracy improvement is one of the most important step of remote sensing image preprocessing. Traditional methods require a large number of ground control points(GCPs) which consuming lots of manpower and financial resources. With the resolution up to 0.8m, the original geo-positioning accuracy of the Chinese Gaofen(GF-2) multi-angle imagery is about 90m which means a limited application in geometric processing. In this paper, we propose a new method to improve the geometric performance of the multi-angle satellite imagery based on the geometric error sources of this experimental dataset without GCPs. Under the condition of weak intersection of our test dataset, we use a DEM-assisted approach to acquire a more accurate initial position accuracy of all tie points, and all extracted data is clustered by the Density based spatial clustering of applications with noise(DBSCAN) algorithm in order to eliminate points or impages with large positioning error automatically. Then, the error-based block adjustment model are proposed and investigated to improved the geometric performance of the experimental dataset. Based on our proposed method, 142 multi-angle GF-2 satellite images covering the western Beijing area are experimented and the root mean square error(RMSE) of the geometric accuracy is improved up to about 12m in plane and 6m in height, which shows a significantly improvement in geo-positioning accuracy of these multi-angle GF-2 remote sensing imagery.

Abstract:When using the Range-Doppler model for SAR image geometric correction,the error of satellite orbit,imaging parameter and DEM elevation will affect the geometric correction accuracy.A new geometric rectification method has been presented for spaceborne SAR image.First,polynomial was used for parameterizing SAR orbit.Then orbit parameters were corrected by control points that acquired by matching of simulated SAR image and real SAR image.Finally,the precise geometric rectification using corrected parameters was accompl ished.The presented method can be appl ied for SAR image geometric rectification where the ground control points are difficult to be acquired.It has higher precision compared to the geometric rectification based on image simulation and polynomial correction.The Radarsat-2 image was used in experiments,and the ground control points measured by GPS validated the proposed approach.

Thus,to analysis the precision of remote sensing mapping is an effective method to enhance and improve the charting precision.Because the geometry correction is the main step in remote sensing mapping process,the article selected geometry correction as the breakthrough point.It analyzed the remote sensing imagery processing software,the operator and the different resolutions of remote sensing image which affect the precision of the chart.Through the analysis of precision,we can conclude that: when we operate a lot of times,we can ignore the errors of the remote sensing imagery processing software and the operator.And the effect of different resolutions of remote sensing image can also be improved by correct mapping matching.

Abstract:The GF-3 satellite is the first full-polarization SAR satellite in China, which operates in the C band with a resolution of 1m. This paper presents a dual-aspect geometric terrain correction method to overcome the inherent shortages of SAR image such as foreshortening, shadow and layover. The results using GF-3 satellite data show that the method can effectively eliminate layover and shadow distortions in SAR images. This method solves the geometric correction problem that cannot be solved with a single SAR image.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-based environmental studies are gaining space in recent years due to their advantages of minimal cost, flexibility, and very high spatial resolution. Researchers can acquire imagery according to their schedule and convenience with the option of alternating the sensors working in visible, infrared, and microwave wavelengths. The recent developments in UAVs and in the associated image-processing techniques extend the fields of UAVs application. Inherent geometric deformation of UAVs images inevitably leads to burgeoning interest in exploring the geographical registration techniques of UAVs images preprocessing. However, atmospheric correction had been generally neglected due to the low altitudes of UAVs platforms. The path radiance of low-latitude atmosphere misleads the reflectance of target objects. Thus, a valid atmospheric correction is essential in the cases where vegetation indices (VIs) are adopted in vegetation monitoring. The off-the-shelf atmospheric correction algorithms adopted in satellite-based remote sensing are typically ill-suited for UAVs-based images due to the distinctly different altitudes and radiation transfer modes. This article identified the effect of atmospheric attenuation for spectral data collected by UAVs sensors of different altitudes and developed a physical-based atmospheric correction algorithm of UAVs images. Field-measured reflectance spectrum was essential in modelling. A sunny and dry day and a flat terrain were the two prerequisites to ensure the general application of the developed algorithm. A case study was subsequently carried out to verify the utility of the developed algorithm, and the results showed that VIs based on the UAVs images of different altitudes had a similar ability in vegetation assessment as ground-based recordings. However, the assessment accuracy could be clearly improved by using the developed atmospheric correction algorithm.

Abstract:The atmospheric correction of satellite observations is crucial for both land and ocean remote sensing. However, the optimal approach for each area is different due to the large spectra difference in the ground reflectance between land and ocean. A unified atmospheric correction (UAC) approach based on a look-up table (LUT) of in situ measurements is developed to remove this difference. The LUT is used to select one spectrum as the in situ ground reflectance needed to obtain the initial aerosol reflectance, which in turn is used for determining the two closest aerosol models. The aerosol reflectance, obtained from these aerosol models, is then used to deduce the estimated ground reflectance. This UAC model is then used to process the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data, and its performance is validated with a large number of in situ measurements. The mean bias of the land reflectance for this model is 6.59% with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 19.61%. The mean bias and RMSE of the water-leaving reflectance are 7.59% and 17.10% validated by the in situ measurements using the above-water method, while they are 13.60% and 22.53% using the in-water method. The UAC model provides a useful tool for correcting the satellite-received reflectance without separately having to deal with land and ocean pixels. Further, it can seamlessly expand the satellite ocean color data for terrestrial use and improve quantitative remote sensing over land.
An Optimal Geometric Correction Method for MODIS 1B Data Collection and Its Software Development

Abstract:MODIS image is a kind of new and important data for global change research. After analyzing in the depth causes of MODIS data distortion, an optimal method to remove the geometric distortion is developed. The longitude and latitude coordinates, obtained by MODIS sensor, are used to remove the distortion of the 1km resolution MODIS data; For 250m and 500m resolution MODIS data, the same resolution coordinates are calculated by the spline interpolation, then the geometric distortion is removed. Because of the spatial irregularity of MODIS 1B data, a method with forward gridding approach and the inverse gridding approach is utilized to allocate a pixel's position of the geometrically corrected data in the original image. By computing the overlap degree of the current position, the number of the pixels used to calculate the value of the output pixels, the search window sizes and the accurate position of the windows are decided. The value of output pixels is calculated by the distance inverse weight method. All optimal approaches above will improve the processed image's quality and the processing efficiency. The software based on the above approaches is developed in the Visual C ++6.0 environment. From the result, the conclusion that the approaches are practical and reasonable can be made.

Abstract:Because of the influence of atmosphere, the characteristics of the sensor and the image recording system, the quality of on-orbit obtained satellite images maybe get lower. The radiation distortion is caused by various factors, such as the blurring of the imaging system, non-linear amplitude response, vignetting and shadows, transmission noise, atmospheric interference, the changes of surface exposure and the radiance changes with the angle. According to the actual characteristics of high-resolution satellite images, we presented a radiation correction method which solved the image distortion problem. The radiation correction can provide a good basis for the image geometric correction, image fusion, etc. By the actual obtaining data of satellite on-orbit experiments, this program solves the problems of chrominance, mosaics, correction, drop-out lines, and noise existed in the images which are obtained by the raw data after decryption and decompression. The radiation correction can provide a good basis for the image mapping process, image fusion, etc.
Accurate Geometric Correction of NOAA AVHRR Images: the Coastline Detection Approach with Respect to Multispectral and Spatial Information

Abstract:This paper describes a simple, computationally inexpensive approach for automatically detecting coastline with respect to multispectral and spatial information in a NOAA AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) image. This approach is used to automatically identifying GCPs (Ground Control Points); and then, using these GCPs to implement accurate geometric correction of NOAA AVHRR images. Experimental results show that: with this coastline detection approach the accurate geometric correction of NOAA AVHRR images can achieve subpixel accuracy (less than 1 pixel).
High precision geometric correction based on DEM data and GCP outlier detection for MODIS data

Abstract:Terrain Height Error is one of the most important factors which influences the accuracy of direct system correction and has an obvious effect along the scanning direction. In this paper, taking Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data received from Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites as an example, and focusing on the high precision geolocation techniques of the moderate resolution optical satellite data, a high precision algorithm based on Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data and Ground Control Point (GCP) outlier detection is proposed to correct this kind of influences of Terrain Height Error. For more efficient and intelligent processing in practical applications, a group of GCPs should be used in the further geometric correction. But the correction result using GCPs is not so stabile, because it is often influenced by the data conditions. In this paper, a new idea based on local distortion similarity is proposed for the GCP outlier detection too. In this method, the distortion is described by a 2-D Gaussian distribution in the local area, and a decision rule is made to find out the abnormal GCPs according to the variance of the Gaussian distribution. Some experiment results using MODIS data show that the proposed algorithm based on DEM data and GCP outlier detection is feasible and valid. The final average location error of the new algorithm is about 0.13 pixels which is sufficient for many application requirements.

Abstract:The automatic geometric rectification of space-borne SAR remote sensing images is generally achieved by automatic matching with the optical control base map. However, the optical map has the problem that its coverage is limited and the data cannot be updated in time. With the continuous development of digital maps, the coverage and accuracy of vector maps continue to increase. In order to expand the source of data for correction processing of SAR remote sensing images, an automatic SAR image correction method based on vector map is proposed. Application experiments show that the geometric positioning accuracy of SAR images can be improved significantly based on vector map.

Abstract:Considering that the atmospheric refraction and aberration of light (AOL) bend the path of light and thus affect the geolocation accuracy, a rigorous imaging geometric model with corrections of atmospheric refraction and AOL is proposed to improve the accuracy of geolocation for GaoFen-7 (GF-7) images without ground control points (GCPs). The correction of atmospheric refraction is calculated using a simplified two-layer atmospheric refraction model, while the correction of AOL is calculated using the satellite altitude and velocity. Then, the rigorous imaging geometric model is refined with both corrections. A total of 68 scenes of GF-7 satellite backward images in ten regions with different roll-off-nadir angles are selected to compare and detect the variation of accuracy with and without the corrections. The results show that the average geolocation accuracy is improved by 0.14 m in object space, and about 0.20 pixels in image space if the corrections of atmospheric refraction and AOL are taken into the geometric model. The average improvement of RMSEs is about 1.00 pixels and the ratio of improved scenes reaches 88.89% when the roll-off-nadir angle is larger than 15°, whereas there is no need to consider atmospheric refraction and AOL if the off-nadir angle is smaller than 5°. The methodology and results can provide support for the need for corrections for high-precision positioning and the promotion of GF-7 imagery.

Abstract:Optical satellite images frequently suffer from thin clouds, degrading the data quality. A thin cloud correction method is developed based on complementary dark objects on multiple visible bands to address this problem. First, thin cloud images are divided into irregular subareas using the superpixel segmentation algorithm, enabling the proper identification of dark objects in the spatial domain across different visible bands. A criterion is then established to classify the dark objects into two types, namely, absolute dark objects (ADOs) and relative dark objects (RDOs). Subsequently, the quantitative correlation of thin clouds between visible bands is estimated by adopting the ADOs. Dark objects present complementarity in visible bands; thus, the RDOs on one band are spatially densified by referencing the RDOs on the other visible bands. Thereby, a thin cloud map with fine spatial details is interpolated by using all the ADOs and RDOs on a band, and the correction procedure is performed through subtraction. Eight visible data captured by Landsat platforms are collected for simulated and real experiments to evaluate the method's performance. Three representative thin cloud correction approaches are selected for visual and quantitative comparisons. The proposed method can correct thin clouds effectively and restore various scenes accurately. The interpolated thin cloud maps show enhanced texture details and finer representation compared with the benchmarks. In addition, the advantages of dark-object densification for thin cloud map generation and the limitations of the proposed method are investigated.

Abstract:The geometric correction of thermal infrared (TIR) orthophotos generated by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) presents significant challenges due to low resolution and the difficulty of identifying ground control points (GCPs). This study addresses the limitations of real-time kinematic (RTK) UAV data acquisition, such as network instability and the inability to detect GCPs in TIR images, by proposing a method that utilizes RGB orthophotos as a reference for geometric correction. The accelerated-KAZE (AKAZE) method was applied to extract feature points between RGB and TIR orthophotos, integrating binary descriptors and absolute coordinate-based matching techniques. Geometric correction results demonstrated a significant improvement in regions with stable and changing environmental conditions. Invariant regions exhibited an accuracy of 0.7~2 px (0.01~0.04), while areas with temporal and spatial changes saw corrections within 5~7 px (0.10~0.14 m). This method reduces reliance on GCP measurements and provides an effective supplementary technique for cases where GCP detection is limited or unavailable. Additionally, this approach enhances time and economic efficiency, offering a reliable alternative for precise orthophoto generation across various sensor data.
