Abstract:We have synthesized a new oxypnictide, Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O, via a solid-state reaction under a vacuum. The compound crystallizes in a body-centered tetragonal lattice, which can be viewed as an intergrowth of BaFe2As2 and BaTi2As2O, thus containing Fe2As2 layers and Ti2O sheets. Bulk superconductivity at 21 K is observed after annealing the as-prepared sample at 773 K for 40 h. In addition, an anomaly in resistivity and magnetic susceptibility around 125 K is revealed, suggesting a charge- or spin-density wave transition in the Ti sublattice.

Abstract:Inspired by the experiments of (Sr2VO3)(2)Fe2As2 and (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2), the density-functional theory calculations are carried out to predict a possible parent compound (Sr4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) for iron-based superconductors. The magnetic orders of Fe atoms are easy to adopt striped anti-ferromagnetic (S-AFM) order for its ground state. The longest d(FeAs) and the angle (Fe-As-Fe) most close to 109.47 degrees are forecasted compared with (Sr2VO3)(2)Fe2As2 and (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) for the nonmagnetic (NM) configuration, which may imply that (Sr4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) is a potential parent compound of high-T-C superconductors. The densities of states around the Fermi energy (E-F) mainly come from the Fe-3d orbital for both NM and S-AFM configurations. The band structure computation shows that this compound is anisotropic and the Fermi surface sheets of (Sr4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) are similar to (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) for the NM configuration. The result will be helpful for looking for new type of iron-based superconductors.
BaTh_2Fe_4As_4(N_0.7O_0.3)_2: an Iron-Based Superconductor Stabilized by Inter-Block-Layer Charge Transfer

Abstract:Recently, An electron-doped 12442-type iron-based superconductor BaTh_2Fe_4As_4(N_0.7O_0.3)_2 has been successfully synthesized with high-temperature solid-state reactions on basis of a structural design. The inter-block-layer charge transfer between the constituent units of "BaFe_2As_2" and "ThFeAsN_0.7O_0.3" was found to be essential to stabilize the target compound. Dominant electron-type conduction and bulk superconducting transition at 22 K were demonstrated.

Abstract:Single crystals of a new iron-based superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O have been grown successfully via a Ba2As3-flux method in a sealed evacuated quartz tube. Bulk superconductivity with T-c similar to 21.5K was demonstrated in resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements after the as-grown crystals were annealed at 500 degrees C in vacuum for a week. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm that the annealed and the as-grown crystals possess the identical crystallographic structure of Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O. Energy-dispersive x-ray spectra indicate that partial Ti/Fe substitution exists in the [Fe2As2] layers and the annealing process redistributes the Ti within the Fe-plane. The ordered Fe-plane stabilized by annealing exhibits superconductivity with magnetic vortex pinned by Ti.

Abstract:Density-functional theory calculations are performed on (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) to address the structural stability and electronic properties. The total-energy calculations show that the ground state of the parent compound (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) has striped anti-ferromagnetic order with anti-ferromagnetic coupling between Fe layers. The oxygen vacancy formation energy at the 4f site (similar to 6.02 eV) is smaller than that at the 2c site (similar to 6.33 eV) for the (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 1) phase, which means oxygen vacancies can be easily formed at the 4f site. Further studies show that the ground state of (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 0.25) is identical to the case of (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2), which implies that the spin density wave (SDW) may coexist with superconductivity in the (Ca4Al2O5.75)(Fe2As2) phase. The densities of states (DOSs) of (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 0, 0.25) show that both spin-up and spin-down DOSs at the Fermi energy level become larger obviously due to oxygen vacancies being introduced, which means introducing oxygen vacancies in (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) is beneficial for improving its conductivity. These results will be helpful for synthesizing new 42 622-type structured iron-based superconductors with oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:The electronic structure of Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O, a newly discovered superconductor, is investigated using first-principles calculations based on local density approximations. Multiple Fermi surface sheets originating from Ti-3d and Fe-3d states are present corresponding to the conducting Ti_2As_2O and Fe_2As_2 layers respectively. Compared with BaFe_2As_2, sizeable changes in the related Fermi surface sheets indicate significant electron transfer (about 0.12e) from Ti to Fe, which suppresses the stripe-like antiferromagnetism at the Fe sites and simultaneously induces superconductivity. Our calculations also suggest that an additional Néel-type antiferromagnetic instability at the Ti sites is relatively robust against the electron transfer, which accounts for the anomaly at 125 K in the superconducting Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O.

Abstract:A superconductive Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O oxypnictide sample was synthesized following a solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction followed by Rietveld analysis was used for checking the phase content. Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy in transmission geometry was used for characterizing the hyperfine parameters of the iron site. Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O is paramagnetic at least down to 77 K in contrast to the BaFe2As2 parent phase, which exhibits a spin-density order below similar to 140 K. Fitting the isomer shift and spectral absorption data with the Debye model yielded Debye temperatures of 280-320 K. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report the synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of a new layered oxypnictide Ba2Ti2-Cr2As4O, which is isostructural to the Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O superconductor. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility demonstrate that this new compound is of metallic conduction with an anomaly occurring at 350 K, which is probably due to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in the [Cr2As2](2-) layers. The absence of the charge- or spin-density wave (CDW/SDW) instability in the [Ti2As2O](2-) layers was ascribed to the mixed occupation of Cr in the Ti sublattice. Abstract:We report our progress in the synthesis of new compounds and superconductors in the FeAs-based family.First,we found superconductivity in hole-doped oxy-arsenide La1-xSrxFeAsO and Pr1-x SrxFeAsO.The Hall effect confirmed the hole charge carriers.Hc2(T) is higher in the hole doped samples compared with the electron doped ones.This is attributed to the higher density of states in the hole doped side.Secondly,we present some results of the fluorine-derivative parent phases SrFeAsF,CaFeAsF and EuFeAsF which we discovered independently.By doping the system with electrons,we observed supercon-ductivity(onset point of resistivity) at about 32 K for Sr0.6La0.4FeAsF,52.8 K for Ca0.6Pr0.4FeAsF,and 57.4 K for Ca0.6Nd0.4FeAsF.Finally,we report the discovery of a new compound(Sr3Sc2O5)Fe2As2.We have also successfully fabricated a new superconductor(Sr4V2O6) Fe2As2(with a critical temperature of 37.2K) which is in the stoichiometric phase.

Abstract:The new alpha-Fe(Te,Se) superconductors share the common iron building block and ferminology with the LaFeAsO and BaFe(2)As(2) families of superconductors. In contrast with the predicted commensurate spin-density-wave order at the nesting wave vector (pi, 0), a completely different magnetic order with a composition tunable propagation vector (delta pi, delta pi) was determined for the parent compound Fe(1+y)Te in this powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction study. The new antiferromagnetic order survives as a short-range one even in the highest T(C) sample. An alternative to the prevailing nesting Fermi surface mechanism is required to understand the latest family of ferrous superconductors.

Abstract:We have successfully synthesized a new layered pnictide-oxide: BaTi(2)As(2)O. It shares similar characteristics with Na(2)Ti(2)Sb(2)O. The crystal has a layered structure with a tetragonal P4/nmm group (a = 4.047(3) Å, c = 7.275(4) Å). The resistivity shows an anomaly at 200 K, which should be ascribed to an SDW or structural transition. The SDW or structural transition is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. These behaviors are very similar to those observed in parent compounds of high-T(c) iron-based pnictide superconductors, in which the superconductivity shows up when the anomaly due to the SDW or structural transition is suppressed. Therefore, the new layered pnictide-oxide, BaTi(2)As(2)O, could be a potential parent compound for superconductivity. It is found that Li( + ) doping significantly suppresses the anomaly, but no superconductivity emerges so far.

The X-ray diffraction measurement shows that this material has a layered structure with the space group of P4/nmm, and with the lattice constants a = b = 3.9003 angstrom and c = 15.8376 angstrom. Clear diamagnetic signals in ac susceptibility data and zero-resistance in resistivity data were detected at about 6 K, confirming the occurrence of bulk superconductivity. Meanwhile we observed a superconducting transition in the resistive data with the onset transition temperature at 29.2 K, which may be induced by the nonuniform distribution of the Cr/Ti content in the FeAs-42622 phase.

Abstract:Over the last year, Co-doped BaFe2As2 [1] has emerged as an ideal platform for detailed investigation into the physical properties of iron-based high temperature superconductors. The advantages of electron-doped Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2 are manyfold. First and foremost, it is relatively straightforward to grow homogeneous single crystals [1]. These single crystals allowed us to conduct a systematic NMR [2,3,4,5] and transport measurements [2,6,7] throughout a broad range of the phase diagram [2]. Availability of high quality single crystals also led many other researchers to concentrate their efforts on investigating Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2. Thanks to these concerted efforts, we can compare experimental results obtained by different techniques and build a comprehensive physical picture. Abstract:In this paper the density-functional theory calculations are performed on the newly discovered superconductor (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2). Within the LSDA approach, the total-energy calculations show that the ground state is in striped anti-ferromagnetic (S-AFM) order for (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0 and 0.5) and oxygen vacancy is easily formed at 8g site for (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0.5). The electronic densities of the states around the Fermi energy (EF) mainly come from the Fe-3d states for both nonmagnetic and S-AFM configurations of (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0) and the total DOSs (both spins) around the EF become obviously larger when oxygen vacancies are introduced at 8g site. Considering electron correlation, it is found that a strong correlation insulating gap develops with the increase of Hubbard U for the parent compound (Ca3Al2O5)(Fe2As2), and the transition from insulator to metal is forecasted when oxygen vacancies are introduced in (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) system. The ground state of this compound could be ascribed as a correlated insulator and the oxygen vacancy yields its transition from insulator to metal.

Abstract:Fe-based superconductors exhibit a diverse interplay between charge, orbital, and magnetic ordering1-4. Variations in atomic geometry affect electron hopping between Fe atoms5,6 and the Fermi surface topology, influencing magnetic frustration and the pairing mechanism through changes of orbital overlap and occupancies7-11. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a systematic approach to realize superconductivity without chemical doping in BaFe2As2, employing geometric design within an epitaxial heterostructure. We control both tetragonality and orthorhombicity in BaFe2As2 through superlattice engineering, which we experimentally find to induce superconductivity when the As-Fe-As bond angle approaches that in a regular tetrahedron. This approach of superlattice design could lead to insights into low dimensional superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors.

Abstract:We have discovered a new homologous series of iron pnictide oxides (Fe2As2)(Can+2(Al,Ti)nOy)[n = 2,3,4]. These compounds have perovskite-like blocking layers between Fe2As2 layers. The structure of new compounds are tetragonal with space groups of P4/nmm for n = 2 and 4 and P4mm for n = 3, which are similar to those of (Fe2As2)(Can+1(Sc,Ti)nOy)[n = 3,4,5] found in our previous study. Compounds with n = 3 and 4 have new crystal structures with 3 and 4 sheets of perovskite layers, respectively, including a rock salt layer in each blocking layer. The a-axis lengths of the three compounds are approximately 3.8 A, which are close to those of FeSe and LiFeAs. (Fe2As2)(Ca6(Al,Ti)4Oy) exhibited bulk superconductivity in magnetization measurement with Tc(onset)~36 K and resistivity drop was observed at ~39 K. (Fe2As2)(Ca5(Al,Ti)3Oy) also showed large diamagnetism at low temperatures. These new compounds indicate considerable rooms are still remaining for new superconductors in layered iron pnictides.
