Abstract:Superconductivity in low-dimensional compounds has long attracted much interest. Here we report superconductivity in a low-dimensional ternary telluride Ta4Pd3Te16 in which the repeating layers contain edge-sharing octahedrally-coordinated PdTe2 chains along the crystallographic b axis. Measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat on the Ta4Pd3Te16 crystals, grown via a self-flux method, consistently demonstrate bulk superconductivity at 4.6 K. Further analyses of the data indicate significant electron-electron interaction, which allows electronic Cooper pairing in the present system.

Abstract:The search for unconventional superconductivity in Weyl semimetal materials is currently an exciting pursuit, since such superconducting phases could potentially be topologically nontrivial and host exotic Majorana modes. The layered material TaIrTe4 is a newly predicted time-reversal invariant type II Weyl semimetal with minimum Weyl points. Here, by a systematical study based on electrical transport measurements at ultralow temperature and in ultrahigh magnetic field, we discover that TaIrTe4 crystals exhibit quasi one dimensional (quasi 1D) superconductivity with an onset transition temperature (Tc) up to 1.54 K, and observe Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations with multiple periods reflecting the nontrivial band topology. The normalized upper critical field h*(T/Tc) behavior implies that the discovered superconductivity in TaIrTe4 is unconventional with finite triplet pairing contribution. The observed superconductivity is further confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements. These results suggest that TaIrTe4 is a novel platform which may be applicable to explore topological superconductivity.
Superconducting Properties and Topological Nodal Line Signatures in Centrosymmetric Compound SnTaS$_2$

Abstract:We report the magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat measurements and band structure calculations of layered superconductor SnTaS$_2$. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown by chemical vapor transport method. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a type-II superconductor with transition temperature $T_c = 3$ K. The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) shows large anisotropy for magnetic field parallel to $ab$ plane ($H//ab$) and $c$ axis ($H//c$), and the temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ for $H//ab$ shows obvious unconventional upward feature at low temperature. Band structure of SnTaS$_2$ shows several band crossings near the Fermi level, which form three nodal lines in the k$_z$ = 0 plane resulting in drumhead-like surface states when spin-orbit coupling is not considered. These results indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a superconductor with possible topological nodal line semimetal character.

Abstract:Superconductivity in PdTe2 heavy transition metal based compounds is rapidly developing field in condensed matter physics community. Here, we report superconductivity in a nominal ternary telluride Ta2Pd0.97Te6 compound, which is synthesized in sealed evacuated quartz ampoule. The resultant compound is crystallized in layered monoclinic Ta4Pd3Te16 phase with space group C2/m, having lattice parameters a=21.304(6)A, b=3.7365(7)A, and c=17.7330A with Beta =120.65(1)degree. Both transport and magnetic measurements demonstrated bulk superconductivity at 4.4K in studied polycrystalline sample. The metallic normal state conductivity can be well ascribed to Fermi-liquid behaviour. The superconducting upper critical field of the compound is determined to be 5.5Tesla based on magneto-restively measurements.

Abstract:Ta4Pd3Te16 is a newly discovered layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) structure. Recent thermal transport measurements show the possible existence of nodes in the superconducting gap. Here we report low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/ spectroscopy study on Ta4Pd3Te16 single crystals. We observed stripelike structure composed of atom chains on the cleaved ((1) over bar 03) surface. There exists charge-density-wave (CDW)- like modulations along stripes with commensurate periods. Meanwhile, the tunneling conductance shows an s-wave-like superconducting gap. The magnetic vortex mapped at low field is highly anisotropic with a bound state in the core. At increased field, strong vortex overlapping is directly observed and the bound state is suppressed, indicating the delocalization of the superconducting quasiparticles. Our observations suggest that Ta4Pd3Te16 is of multiband superconductivity with strong 1D characters, which possibly coexist with CDW transition.

Abstract:Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ is a recently discovered superconductor that has been suggested to be an unconventional superconductor near magnetism. We report electronic structure calculations showing that in spite of the layered crystal structure the material is an anisotropic three dimensional metal. The Fermi surface contains prominent one and two dimensional features, including nested 1D sheets, a 2D cylindrical section and a 3D sheet. The electronic states that make up the Fermi surface are mostly derived from Te $p$ states, with small Ta $d$ and Pd $d$ contributions. This places the compound far from magnetic instabilities. The results are discussed in terms of multiband superconductivity.

Abstract:We report bulk superconductivity at 1.0 K in a low-dimensional ternary telluride Ta 3 Pd 3 Te 14 containing edge-sharing PdTe 2 chains along crystallographic b axis, similar to the recently discovered superconductor Ta 4 Pd 3 Te 16 . The electronic heat capacity data show an obvious anomaly at the transition temperature, which indicates bulk superconductivity. The specific-heat jump is Δ C /(γ n T c ) ≈ 1.35, suggesting a weak coupling scenario. By measuring the low-temperature thermal conductivity, we conclude that Ta 3 Pd 3 Te 14 is very likely a dirty s -wave superconductor. The emergence of superconductivity in Ta 3 Pd 3 Te 14 with a lower T c , compared to that of Ta 4 Pd 3 Te 16 , may be attributed to the lower density of states.

Abstract:Ternary telluride Ta4Pd3Te16 is a layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional characteristics. It has attracted great research interests due to the possible nodal superconductivity and its interplay with adjacent charge-density wave as well as proposed nontrivial band topology. Here, we report low-energy electronic band structure of Ta4Pd3Te16 by means of high-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We acquired the Fermi surface and detailed band dispersions, directly reflecting its multiband nature. Furthermore, dispersion kinks at similar to 8 meV below the Fermi level are unambiguously observed, indicative of strong electron boson coupling. We suggest these kinks are probably due to electron-phonon coupling with effective coupling constants quantified to be similar to 0.72 and similar to 0.48 for the gamma(1) and gamma(2) bands, respectively. Our results provide valuable information for future studies on the mechanism of superconductivity as well as its intimacy to charge-density wave in Ta4Pd3Te16.

Abstract:We carried out the measurements of magnetoresistance, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat on crystals of the low-dimensional transition metal telluride Ta_4Pd_3Te_16. Our results indicate that Ta_4Pd_3Te_16 is an anisotropic type-II superconductor with the extracted Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ_GL= 84. The upper critical field H_c2(T) shows a linear dependence at low temperature and the anisotropy of H_c2(T) is strongly T-dependent, both of which indicate a multiband scenario. A detailed analysis reveals that the electronic specific heat C_el(T) can be consistently described by a two-gap (s+d waves) model from the base temperature T/T_c∼ 0.12 up to T_c. Our data suggests multiband superconductivity in Ta_4Pd_3Te_16 with anisotropic gap structure.

Abstract:We report an investigation of the London penetration depth Delta gimel(T) on single crystals of the layered superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16, where the crystal structure has quasi-one-dimensional characteristics. A linear temperature dependence of Delta gimel(T) is observed for T << Tc, in contrast to the exponential behavior of fully gapped superconductors. This indicates the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. A detailed analysis shows that the normalized superfluid density rho s(T), which is converted from Delta gimel(T), can be well described by a multigap scenario, with nodes in one of the superconducting gaps, providing clear evidence for nodal superconductivity in Ta4Pd3Te16.
Anisotropic Superconductivity in the Topological Crystalline Metal Pb1/3TaS2 with Multiple Dirac Fermions

Abstract:Topological crystalline metals and semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated great research interest, which broadens the classification of topological phases and provides a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb1/3TaS2. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb1/3TaS2 is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor (T-c approximate to 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field (gamma H-c2 = H-c2(ab) / H-c2(c) approximate to 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb1/3TaS2 hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the k(z) = pi plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation or screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb1/3TaS2 is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.

Abstract:TaSe2 has several different polytypes and abundant physical properties, such as superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW), which have been investigated in the past few decades. However, there has been no report on the physical properties of the 4Ha polytype up to now. Here we report the crystal growth and discovery of superconductivity in the tantalum self-intercalated 4Ha-Ta1.03Se2 single crystal with a superconducting transition onset temperature of [Formula: see text] K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in the 4Ha polytype of TaSe2. A slightly suppressed CDW transition is found around 106 K. A large [Formula: see text] value of about 4.48 is found when a magnetic field is applied in the ab-plane, which probably results from the enhanced spin-orbit coupling. Special stacking faults are observed, which further enhance the anisotropy. Although the density of states at the Fermi level is lower than that of other polytypes, T c remains the same, indicating that the stack mode of the 4Ha polytype may be beneficial to superconductivity in TaSe2.

Abstract:The layered transition metal chalcogenides have been a fertile land in solid state physics for many decades. Various MX2-type transition metal dichalcogenides, such as WTe2, IrTe2, and MoS2, have triggered great attention recently, either for the discovery of novel phenomena or some extreme or exotic physical properties, or for their potential applications. PdTe2 is a superconductor in the class of transition metal dichalcogenides, and superconductivity is enhanced in its Cu-intercalated form, Cu0.05PdTe2. It is important to study the electronic structures of PdTe2 and its intercalated form in order to explore for new phenomena and physical properties and understand the related superconductivity enhancement mechanism. Here we report systematic high resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on PdTe2 and Cu0.05$PdTe2 single crystals, combined with the band structure calculations. We present for the first time in detail the complex multi-band Fermi surface topology and densely-arranged band structure of these compounds. By carefully examining the electronic structures of the two systems, we find that Cu-intercalation in PdTe2 results in electron-doping, which causes the band structure to shift downwards by nearly 16 meV in Cu0.05PdTe2. Our results lay a foundation for further exploration and investigation on PdTe2 and related superconductors.

Abstract:We report on a bottom-up approach via molecular-beam epitaxy to grow high-quality crystalline two-dimensional films of PdTe2 on SrTiO3 (001), and investigation on the electronic and superconducting properties therein by using scanning tunneling microscopy and transport experiments in combination with first-principles calculations. We observed a transition from the narrow-gap semiconducting phase in the monolayer to the metallic phase in the multilayer films. Importantly, all the multilayer films exhibited robust superconductivity, whose transition temperatures in the ultrathin limit were obviously higher than expected from the empirical inverseof-thickness dependence and could be further enhanced through magnesium intercalation. Our first-principles studies revealed thickness-tuned band topology caused by the significant orbital-dependent interlayer coupling, which explained the experimentally observed thickness-dependent behaviors of atomic and electronic properties. Combined with the prediction of topologically nontrivial states introduced by honeycomb lattice of p orbitals, PdTe2 thin films are promising material candidates for exploring the interplay between superconductivity and topology in the two-dimensional limit.
Charge Fluctuations and Nodeless Superconductivity in Quasi-One-dimensionalta4pd3te16revealed By

Abstract:We report $^{125}\mathrm{Te}$ nuclear magnetic resonance and $^{181}\mathrm{Ta}$ nuclear quadrupole resonance studies on single-crystal ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{4}{\mathrm{Pd}}_{3}{\mathrm{Te}}_{16}$, which has a quasi-one-dimensional structure and superconducts below ${T}_{c}=4.3$ K. $^{181}\mathrm{Ta}$ with spin $I=7/2$ is sensitive to quadrupole interactions, while $^{125}\mathrm{Te}$ with spin $I=1/2$ can only relax by magnetic interactions. By comparing the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/{T}_{1}$) of $^{181}\mathrm{Ta}$ and $^{125}\mathrm{Te}$, we found that electric-field-gradient (EFG) fluctuations develop below 80 K. The EFG fluctuations are enhanced with decreasing temperature due to the fluctuations of a charge density wave that sets in at ${T}_{\mathrm{CDW}}=20$ K, below which the spectra are broadened and $1/{T}_{1}T$ drops sharply. In the superconducting state, $1/{T}_{1}$ shows a Hebel-Slichter coherence peak just below ${T}_{c}$ for $^{125}\mathrm{Te}$, indicating that ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{4}{\mathrm{Pd}}_{3}{\mathrm{Te}}_{16}$ is a full-gap superconductor without nodes in the gap function. The coherence peak is absent in the $1/{T}_{1}$ of $^{181}\mathrm{Ta}$ due to the strong EFG fluctuations.

Ta 4cosi: A Tantalum-Rich Superconductor with a Honeycomb Network Structure

Abstract:The crystal structure of solid-state materials with unique lattices is considered one of the main factors deter-mining physical properties, including superconductivity. Materials with honeycomb lattices have inspired intense research interest for their novel properties. A previously unknown compound, Ta4CoSi, is discussed herein, along with its crystal structure and superconducting properties. It crystallizes in a CuAl2-type structure (space group P4/mcc, No. 124), with the lattice parameters a = b = 6.17755(7) angstrom and c = 4.98443(8) angstrom, featuring honeycomb networks of Ta-Ta in the (110) plane. Superconductivity is observed below the critical temperature of -2.45 K, while lower and upper critical magnetic fields are -9.86 mT and 0.84 T, respectively. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that the honeycomb lattices significantly influence the superconducting properties. This material may thus provide a new platform for investigating the exotic superconductivity of honeycomb networks.
