Abstract:This document specifies an extension to the IPv6 multicast addressing architecture to be used in the context of IPv4-IPv6 interconnection. In particular, this document defines an address format for IPv4- embedded IPv6 multicast addresses. This address format can be used for IPv4-IPv6 translation or encapsulation schemes.

Abstract:This document discusses an extension of the algorithmic translation between IPv4 and IPv4-translatable IPv6 addresses. The extended address format contains transport-layer port set identification (PSID) which allows several IPv6 nodes to share a single IPv4 address with each node managing a different range of ports. This address format extension can be used for IPv4/IPv6 translation, as well as IPv4 over IPv6 tunneling.

Abstract:Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) has been proposed to support host mobility in the next generation mobile networks. With the development of various multimedia applications, the requirement for QoS guarantee in such systems is coming. In this paper we first present an overview of RSVP extensions for reserving resources in mobile networks. We divide existing researches into four aspects: management of resource reservation, re-establishment of reservation path, design of mobile agent and integration of RSVP and mobility management. For each scheme we describe the basic idea and make comments on the advantages and disadvantages. Then we propose a QoS guarantee scheme in Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6 (FMIPv6) architecture, using some mechanisms mentioned previously. Finally we draw the conclusion and present some future work.

Abstract:IPv4 addresses will be soon exhausted while more and more users are pouring into the Internet. It is commonly understood that IPv6 is definitely necessary for connecting new users, but lack of resources in current IPv6 world discourages providers from developing their IPv6 market. Address and packet translations are considered necessary for Internet content resources migrating from IPv4 world to IPv6, but up to now there is no one translation approach scalable enough. We understand the scalability is essentially restricted by the states in routing and those in translation, and accordingly we propose a novel architecture, called IVI, where IPv6 subscriber addresses are mapped from IPv4 with a certain rule that keeps IPv6 routing table well aggregated and makes translation stateless at all. Moreover, we introduce multiplex into the mapping to accommodate the trend of IPv4 addresses being more and more precious. Analysis based on real traffic data proves that the proposed approach is feasible to be deployed by an ISP for its customer networks and the potential degradation in end-to-end performance is acceptable.

Abstract:IPv6 protocol plays an important role in the next generation of Internet (NGI). It is expected that the elegant coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 is the key point of IPv6 transition. To solve the transition problem, we propose a mesh unicast framework and a multicast framework in this paper. We describe two reference models for the mesh unicast framework, and put forward two potential solutions for the multicast framework. A Linux-based prototype is implemented for IPv4 over IPv6 scenario and a test bed is deployed with 8 nodes on CERNET2. The deployment demonstrates the advantages of the framework.

Abstract:This document proposes a mechanism, IVIT (IVI+Tunnel), to support non- IVI IPv6 hosts to communicate with IPv4 hosts, and vice versa. IVIT combines IVI translation and Tunnel methods with the IVI translation at the core and the tunnel at the edge. In this document, IVIT provides two modes. One is the dual-stack host mode, which supports the communication between a dual-stack host in an IPv4 network and a non-IVI IPv6 host, especially the communication scenario between a dual-stack server in an IPv4 network and a non-IVI IPv6 host. The other is the CPE mode, which supports the communication between an IPv4-only host and a non-IVI IPv6 host, especially the bidirectional communication scenario between a private IPv4 network and a non-IVI IPv6 network. Combined with IVI, IVIT can support the communication between IPv4 networks and IPv6 networks statelessly at the core.

Abstract:Nowadays, more and more attention is paid to the Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) because of its flexibility. To provide Internet access for MANET , the interworking mechanism between MANET and IP based fixed network is needed, which has become a vivid research area. However, so far, little work has been done to connect the multicast protocols on both sides so that users can access multicast services on either side. In this paper, a so called Modified MLD (M.MLD) is proposed as a solution to IPv6 multicast interworking between MANET and fixed networks.

Abstract:Due to the shortage of IPv4 addresses, many hosts are currently assigned to a single IPv4 address by using one or a number of NAT devices. However, numerous NAT devices cannot be upgraded for executing 6to4 due to technical and/or economic reasons. Solutions depending on Double Network Address Translation 64 are a good way to utilise shared IP4 addressing. Mapping of address and port using translation (MAP-T) is a technique that accomplishes double translation on Border Relay (BR) and customer edge (CE) devices. IPv4 and IPv6 forwarding, IPv4 and IPv6 fragmentation functions, and NAT64 translation functions are used by MAP-T. This enables increasing numbers of IPv6 in both clients and servers in order to possess the best defence against certain attacks, such as routing loop attacks, spoofing attacks, denial-of-service attacks. We have here proposed some procedures for creating frameworks and sustaining secure IPv6 networks according to applications, environs and architecture.

Abstract:In order to smoothly transit the IPv4 internet to IPv6, some related network transiting mechanisms[J] were developed, which basically put emphasize on the co-existence of IPv4 and IPv6 network while transiting. However, the most significant problem preventing common user from trying and adopting IPv6 is that many kind of now-existing software take no support of IPv6, especially those used in some special area which has been used and tested for years. This brings a rather high cost and risk in the software transiting. Abstract:IPv6 offers significant advantages over IPv4. However IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are expected to coexist during a long period. Currently, there are many IPv4/IPv6 transition/coexistence technologies, which can be generally devided into two kinds: translation and tunneling. In some typical transition scenarios, both tunneling and translation are needed. However, either translation or tunneling has limitation and application scope. In addition to the IP versions of source networks and destination networks, the IP version of transport network (the middle part along end-to-end path) also plays an important role during IPv4/IPv6 transition/coexistence. Therefore, we need to decide which transition methods should be used in different typical transition scenarios and how transition and tunneling collaborate for solving transition/coexistence problems. This draft presents an IPv4-IPv6 transition/coexistence framework named PET (short for Prefixing, Encapsulation and Translation), which is a network side solution. PET includes fundamental elements needed in transition scenarios, which provides the flexibility for network operators to decide the proper transition technology. In addition, this draft also addresses how to deploy PETs and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of typical transition technologies that PET may adopt.

Abstract:IPv4 addresses are already depleted in IANA and will be soon exhausted in RIR while more clients are pouring into the Internet. IPv6, as the only available next generation Internet protocol, is still not commercially successful because a scheme that could solve the migration of IPv4 resources to IPv6 network, as well as mutual communication between the two incompatible protocols, has not been fully developed and deployed. Translation solution provides a proper approach to address this problem. In this article, we propose IVI, an IPv4/IPv6 translation scheme, in order to facilitate resource migration and protocol transition. We explain how it works to translate between IPv4 and IPv6, and how combinations of IVI flavours and various translation scenarios are used in each phase of transition. The evaluation of scalability and robustness, which is important to a widely deployed translation scheme, is also discussed.

Abstract:The current Internet is challenged by the IPv4 address depletion. The stateless IPv4/IPv6 translation technology (IVI) is proposed to facilitate IPv4/IPv6 coexistence and transition. The IVI protocol translation involves the address mapping between IPv4 and IPv6, but the address mapping rules still rely on static configuration. In this paper, we propose an IVI-based locator/id separation architecture for IPv4/IPv6 transition. The new architecture provides a scalable address mapping mechanism and extends IVI to support inter-domain networking and host mobility. Through the deployment of this architecture, the Internet would eventually evolve into a pure IPv6 backbone while the IPv4 layer would be separated from the IPv6 network via protocol translation.
