Abstract:This article introduces the theoretical basis of the Length Approach and the basic idea of the Length Approach, and explains the teaching design of the Length Approach which includes the teaching goal, teaching methods, classroom teaching, evaluation and feedback.For a long time, writing has always been one of the weakest links in college English teaching in China. College English textbooks in China indicate that writing is one part of intensive reading, or more accurately, subordinate to vocabulary practice and grammar drill. Compared with other language skills, less than enough class time is allocated to writing, and little preparation is done for written work in class. The teaching of writing in the English teaching classroom often goes this way: the teacher gives a topic or a selection of topics, a set of requirements, and a time limit. The students finish the task within the time limit and hand in the final product, and then receive a grade, perhaps a response and another assignment. The efficiency of writing course is very low. Students' poor performance in the CET-4 (College English Test Band-4) and CET-6 (College English Test Band-6) can serve as an illustration of the low efficiency.Teaching English writing is always the most difficult part of English education in China. Because writing is just a part of intensive reading, there are few course periods for teaching it in class. Therefore, teachers have no time to pay much attention to the teaching of writing which is thought to be time-consuming and inefficient. In order to pass CET-4 or CET-6, a cram session for composition guidance has become a common teaching mode in most colleges. Students are lack of real communicative desire, and their subjective initiative and creative thinking are limited. The lag of writing teaching has resulted in a serious imbalance between the input and the output, affecting the students' language knowledge internalization. In this case, the Length Approach, advocated by Professor Wang Chuming, comes into being and brings a new enlightenment to the college English writing teaching.

Abstract:To develop the “Guidelines on College English Teaching” in China, the evaluation group of the National Advisory Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching (NACCFLT) under the Ministry of Education recently conducted a survey of the needs for the reform of College English curriculum evaluation. Data were collected from 571 teachers and 1266 students in 21 universities in various parts of the country. This paper, based on a review of the development of College English curriculum evaluation in the past three decades and drawing on the survey results, puts forward some suggestions which are intended to provide a foundation for formulating the evaluation component of the Guidelines.

Abstract:In China, the latest issued national guideline for college English teaching in 2007 has set a significant agenda for college English teaching and learning in the changed context with enhanced objectives for teaching and learning, decentralised guideline for individual institution, innovated teaching and learning process and evaluation system, and particular concern for teacher professional development. This study starts with a contextual analysis of the implementation of the latest round of college English curriculum reform in mainland China, then presents an overview of the content of the new curriculum, and finally elaborates the changes brought by the reform to various aspects of college English teaching and learning. Implications and directions for future research are indicated in concluding remarks.

Abstract:China initiated its eighth round of curriculum reform in basic education in 2001. The senior high school English curriculum, along with all other subjects, was redesigned as part of that reform. The new national curriculum advocated a learner-centered approach to language teaching with an emphasis on providing a common foundation for all students and a keen concern for meeting students’ personal interests, individual needs, and learning potentials. The reform reflects a paradigm shift in curriculum philosophy, course structure, methods of teaching, and assessment strategies. All these changes have posed tremendous challenges for senior high school English teachers. This chapter introduces the guiding principles for the design of the new senior high school English curriculum and compares the new curriculum standards with the previous English teaching syllabus. It then reports the significant changes that have taken place in classrooms, as well as the difficulties that prevent the new curriculum from being successfully implemented. Finally, it calls for the development of an effective support system to help teachers cope with the challenges posed by the new curriculum.

Abstract:Since March 2003, reform in college English education has been carried out in a certain range and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education has launched Curriculum Requirements of College English. In January, 2004, the Ministry of Education examined and approved 180 institutions of higher learning to be the first batch of "pilot colleges for College English teaching reform ". So far, College English teaching has entered a wider range of pilot phase, providing preparation for national the teaching reform. The author has made a beneficial attempt, with members of related project groups, on cultivating integrated capacity of using English for students from non-English major, further to this, they have conducted relevant project studies and practices in subsequent years, putting forward the assumption of innovative teaching mode and carrying out reasonable design of implementation.

Abstract:This paper,based on the results of an extensive study regarding the teaching of English for non-English major graduate students in China, raises some issues calling for attention and identifies some areas for research and reform.Efforts should be made in:(1)reforming the traditional knowledge- oriented teaching approach and stressing the development of the students'ability in language use; (2)advocating learner-centeredness and experiential learning and encouraging learner autonomy;(3) taking full advantage of the modern facilities for teaching and tapping the learner potential;(4) emphasizing quality education and improving the students'ability in logical thinking;(5)improving the quality of the teaching staff;and(6)properly handling the relationship between teaching and testing and introducing a scientific evaluation system.

Abstract:In the new round of college entrance examination English reform, the design and development of high school English elective courses has become a trend in basic education in the new era. The updating of teaching objectives, the formulation of teaching plans, the creation of teaching atmosphere, and the diversification of teaching evaluation have all become the important factors for the effective teaching of high school English elective courses. Based on the reform of the new college entrance examination, this paper analyzes the current status and problems of the opening of high school English elective courses in China, and points out that it is necessary to design and develop high school English elective courses around the new teaching objectives to meet the different needs of English learning, stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning, and promote the continuous improvement of students' comprehensive English ability.

Abstract:In 2001, the Central Ministry of Education of China (CMOEC) disseminated a new English curriculum (NEC) for primary and secondary schools. The NEC promotes communicative language teaching (CLT) with an expectation to improve students’ communicative proficiency. In the official discourse, the NEC is advertised as a radical change; in the literature, CLT is argued to be contradictory to the Chinese culture of learning (Hu, 2002). Challenges for implementing CLT in East Asian classrooms are also frequently reported (Carless, 2007; Littlewood, 2007). So, what are Chinese teachers’ perceptions of the NEC? What are their experiences of teaching the NEC? Are there changes and challenges in their practices? These issues are examined in this chapter.

Abstract:A questionnaire survey about senior English teaching and learning,targeting on 123 English major freshmen who come from 79 middle schools in 19 different provinces or municipalities in a "211 project" and "985 project" university,indicates that in the context of the New Curriculum Reform senior English faculty sufficiency is satisfactory overall;diverse textbooks are used in accordance with one curriculum;texts in textbooks achieve good status of completion while many exercises in them remain undone;students spend too much time on mock test items yet less time on extracurricular reading and listening.?Provinces or municipalities implementing the New Curriculum Standards attach more importance to practice,input and optimization of learning content than those that do not.

Abstract:This study is set in Chinese compulsory education English curriculum after the release of the Opinions on Further Reducing the Burden of Homework and Off-Campus Training for Compulsory Education Students (Hereafter referred to as the Opinions) and Compulsory Education Curriculum Program and Standards. It is based on existing literature to explore the changing curriculum orientations based on the theoretical interpretation of the two policies. The three primary scholarly themes include policy interpretation and identification of changes, orienting the English curriculum with the policies and implications for stakeholders in education. The ongoing change is identified to be a combination of academic-subjected and learner-centered curriculum orientations. This study summarizes the timely efforts required from each side regarding the new pattern of schools’ self-repositioning and teachers’ pedagogical innovation to serve students’ multiple needs, parents’ enhancement of confidence in the policy effectiveness, and students’ transformation of learning modes. These findings may shed some light on the current policy implementation and the follow-up reform in practice.

Abstract:The core literacy is the "gene" of the new curriculum standard(2022) of compulsory education. Under the new curriculum standard, English classroom teaching undertakes the task of transformation from discipline to people, from knowledge to quality. However, the current English education in middle schools seriously retarded the realization of the goals of new curriculum standard, so this thesis will endeavor to construct a new mold of English classroom teaching through the exploration of appropriate teaching materials, suitable goals, versatile methods and design, and diverse evaluation systems. The first part is an introduction of the amendment progress of English curriculum standard; the second part is the theoretical basis and literary review of the study; the third part concerns the significance of the study; the fourth part focuses on the constructional strategies of the new mold in middle school classroom English teaching; and the last part will reiterate the significance and necessity of constructing a new mold of English classroom teaching in middle school in the new era under the new English curriculum standard.
