Abstract:This article introduces the theoretical basis of the Length Approach and the basic idea of the Length Approach, and explains the teaching design of the Length Approach which includes the teaching goal, teaching methods, classroom teaching, evaluation and feedback.For a long time, writing has always been one of the weakest links in college English teaching in China. College English textbooks in China indicate that writing is one part of intensive reading, or more accurately, subordinate to vocabulary practice and grammar drill. Compared with other language skills, less than enough class time is allocated to writing, and little preparation is done for written work in class. The teaching of writing in the English teaching classroom often goes this way: the teacher gives a topic or a selection of topics, a set of requirements, and a time limit. The students finish the task within the time limit and hand in the final product, and then receive a grade, perhaps a response and another assignment. The efficiency of writing course is very low. Students' poor performance in the CET-4 (College English Test Band-4) and CET-6 (College English Test Band-6) can serve as an illustration of the low efficiency.Teaching English writing is always the most difficult part of English education in China. Because writing is just a part of intensive reading, there are few course periods for teaching it in class. Therefore, teachers have no time to pay much attention to the teaching of writing which is thought to be time-consuming and inefficient. In order to pass CET-4 or CET-6, a cram session for composition guidance has become a common teaching mode in most colleges. Students are lack of real communicative desire, and their subjective initiative and creative thinking are limited. The lag of writing teaching has resulted in a serious imbalance between the input and the output, affecting the students' language knowledge internalization. In this case, the Length Approach, advocated by Professor Wang Chuming, comes into being and brings a new enlightenment to the college English writing teaching.
