Abstract:Achromatic performance is crucial for numerous multi -wavelength optical fiber applications, including endoscopic imaging and fiber sensing. This paper presents the design and nanoprinting of a fiber-integrated achromatic diffractive lens within the visible spectrum (450-650 nm). The 3D nanoprinting is achieved by a high-resolution direct laser writing technology, overcoming limitations in the optical performance caused by the lack of an arbitrary 3D structure writing capability and an insufficient feature resolution in the current manufacturing technology for visible light broadband achromatic diffractive lenses. A three-step optimization algorithm is proposed to effectively balance optical performance with writing difficulty. The characterization results demonstrate excellent achromatic focusing performance, paving the way towards the development of nanoprinted flat optical devices for applications such as optical fiber traps, miniature illumination systems, and integrated photonic chips.(c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Flat optics consisting of nanostructures of high-refractive-index materials produce lenses with thin form factors that tend to operate only at specific wavelengths. Recent attempts to achieve achromatic lenses uncover a trade-off between the numerical aperture (NA) and bandwidth, which limits performance. Here we propose a new approach to design high NA, broadband and polarization-insensitive multilayer achromatic metalenses (MAM). We combine topology optimization and full wave simulations to inversely design MAMs and fabricate the structures in low-refractive-index materials by two-photon polymerization lithography. MAMs measuring 20 micrometer in diameter operating in the visible range of 400-800 nm with 0.5 NA and 0.7 NA were achieved with efficiencies of up to 42%. We demonstrate broadband imaging performance of the fabricated MAM under white light, and RGB narrowband illuminations. These results highlight the potential of the 3D printed multilayer structures for realizing broadband and multi-functional meta-devices with inverse design.

Abstract:Over the past years, nanostructured metalenses with thin form factors have been extensively studied for their potential in consumer and industrial applications. Despite significant advancements, current metalenses struggle to achieve high numerical aperture (NA), manufacturable structures, broad working bandwidth, and extended depth of focus (DOF) simultaneously. This paper introduces a comprehensive inverse design framework that facilitates the rapid development of polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, effective in both frequency and spatial domains. The framework employs shape-constrained topology optimization to define horizontal ring profiles, along with discrete particle swarm optimization to manage discretized ring heights. Two immersed silicon carbide metalenses are demonstrated to showcase this framework's capability, providing near-unity NAs for enhanced photon collection. The first design is an extended DOF metalens, exhibiting a DOF over four times the light wavelength and achieving a maximum diffraction efficiency of 23%, close to the theoretical limit. The second design achieves broadband achromaticity, suppressing chromatic aberrations across a wide 300 nm bandwidth (850-1150 nm) while maintaining an average diffraction efficiency of 10%. This methodology serves as a valuable tool for deploying functional metalenses with implications for nanophotonics, quantum optics, and quantum nanotechnology. An effective inverse design framework for polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, optimized for frequency and spatial domains is introduced. Using shape-constrained topology optimization and discrete particle swarm optimization, silicon carbide metalenses with extended-depth-of-focus and broadband achromaticity is developed across a 300 nm bandwidth, achieving maximum diffraction efficiencies of 23% and 13.6%, respectively. Abstract:Abstract We design and fabricate ultra-broadband achromatic metalenses operating from the visible into the short-wave infrared, 450–1700 nm, with diffraction-limited performance. A hybrid 3D architecture, which combines nanoholes with a phase plate, allows realization in low refractive index materials. As a result, two-photon lithography can be used for prototyping while molding can be used for mass production. Experimentally, a 0.27 numerical aperture (NA) metalens exhibits 60% average focusing efficiency and 6% maximum focal length error over the entire bandwidth. In addition, a 200 μm diameter, 0.04 NA metalens was used to demonstrate achromatic imaging over the same broad spectral range. These results show that 3D metalens architectures yield excellent performance even using low-refractive index materials, and that two-photon lithography can produce metalenses operating at visible wavelengths.

Abstract:Planar achromatic metalenses with a thickness of the order of wavelength have attracted much attention for their potential applications in ultra-compact optical devices. However, realizing single-layer achromatic metalenses across a wide bandwidth requires that the corresponding meta-atoms have complex cross-sections for correct phase profile and dispersion compensation. Herein, we introduce an effective Abbe number and use lens maker equations to design a dual-layer achromatic metalens in which we compensate the dispersion by using a plano-convex liked metalens combined with a plano-concave liked metalens. The stacked metalens are designed based on simple high refractive index dielectric cylindrical meta-atoms with different radii, which simplify the design and fabrication processes. We demonstrate that a dual-layer achromatic metalens has a small focal length difference across the visible wavelength range and an average focusing efficiency above 50%, which proves that the design method is promising for many potential applications in multi-functional flat optical devices.

Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.

Abstract:We use inverse design to discover metalens structures that exhibit broadband, achromatic focusing across low, moderate, and high numerical apertures. We show that standard unit-cell approaches cannot achieve high-efficiency high-NA focusing, even at a single frequency, due to the incompleteness of the unit-cell basis, and we provide computational upper bounds on their maximum efficiencies. At low NA, our devices exhibit the highest theoretical efficiencies to date. At high NA-of 0.9 with translation-invariant films and of 0.99 with "freeform" structures-our designs are the first to exhibit achromatic high-NA focusing.

Abstract:Optical metalenses offer a compact approach for the development of nanoscale optical devices with various imaging functionalities. Realizing high-quality images using metalenses with large numerical aperture (NA) requires eliminating unwanted optical aberrations. Existing strategies have largely focused only on correcting chromatic aberrations, and a metalens capable of simultaneously correcting chromatic and spherical aberrations has not yet been developed. Here, this issue is addresed by realizing an aplanatic phase profile for a red-green-blue (RGB) achromatic metalens, thereby demonstrating an RGB-achromatic aplanatic metalens. This device consists of crystalline silicon nanostructures and it enables RGB-achromatic aplanatic focusing with an NA of 0.635. The focal length of metalens remains unchanged at the three RGB wavelengths, whereas the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB-achromatic metalens with spherical aberrations. An enhanced RGB imaging resolution is demonstrated, offering exciting opportunities to power up various imaging and display applications using flat metalenses. This paper demonstrates a high NA RGB-achromatic aplanatic metalens which successfully eliminates chromatic aberration at three RGB wavelengths, while the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB-achromatic metalens with spherical aberration. Abstract:Broadband achromatic metalenses are highly desirable for realistic applications in focusing and imaging. In this paper, a group of dielectric double-strip meta-atoms of high-index are proposed to achieve a large range of group delay in a broadband near-infrared range. And an optimization-free method is developed for the simple and fast design of broadband achromatic metalenses of high-numerical-aperture, which treats the dispersion as a function of radius and independent of wavelength. To verify the proposed meta-atoms and the optimization-free design approach, an achromatic metalens is designed with a high-numerical-aperture of NA = 0.81 and a broad bandwidth of 120 nm within the wavelength range from 1470 nm to 1590 nm. Numerical simulations reveal that the focal length only has a small variation of 0.27λ 0 (0.17λ 0/ΝΑ2, λ 0 = 1530 nm), the depth of focus is smaller than 2.85λ 0, and the average transverse size of the focal spot is less than 0.68λ 0, which is slightly larger than the diffraction limit of 0.617λ 0 (0.5λ 0/NA). Compared to other reported achromatic metalenses, the proposed lens has a larger numerical aperture and smaller depth of focus. In addition, the proposed optimization-free method makes it easier to design achromatic metalens with high-numerical-aperture and improved axial resolution.

Abstract:Compact visible wavelength achromats are essential for miniaturized and lightweight optics. However, fabrication of such achromats has proved to be exceptionally challenging. Here, using subsurface 3D printing inside mesoporous hosts we densely integrate aligned refractive and diffractive elements, forming thin high performance hybrid achromatic imaging micro-optics. Focusing efficiencies of 51–70% are achieved for 15μm thick, 90μm diameter, 0.3 numerical aperture microlenses. Chromatic focal length errors of less than 3% allow these microlenses to form high-quality images under broadband illumination (400–700 nm). Numerical apertures upwards of 0.47 are also achieved at the cost of some focusing efficiency, demonstrating the flexibility of this approach. Furthermore, larger area images are reconstructed from an array of hybrid achromatic microlenses, laying the groundwork for achromatic light-field imagers and displays. The presented approach precisely combines optical components within 3D space to achieve thin lens systems with high focusing efficiencies, high numerical apertures, and low chromatic focusing errors, providing a pathway towards achromatic micro-optical systems.
Single-layer metalens for achromatic focusing with wide field of view in the visible range

Abstract:Abstract Metalenses have attracted extensive attention due to their capability of flexible wavefront manipulation by subwavelength nanostructures. However, the development of metalenses has been deeply limited by the field of view (FOV) and spectral bandwidth. Existing wide FOV and achromatic metalenses usually adopt cascaded metasurfaces to correct aberrations, resulting in inevitable challenges for nano-fabrication technologies. In this paper, we design a wide FOV metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.24 which can provide a diffraction-limited FOV for over 40° at three discrete wavelengths of 473 nm (blue), 532 nm (green), and 632.8 nm (red). The metalens involves only a single layer of metasurface integrated on a flat substrate to correct aberration. This method considerably simplifies the architectures compared with the cascaded metalenses and conventional bulky optical systems. In addition, an achromatic wide FOV metalens with an operating wavelength range from 492 to 592 nm is further designed to demonstrate the generality of the proposed method. The simulated results indicate that metalenses have a great achromatic and diffraction-limited focusing performance within a large incident angle region, which is expected to have promising applications in imaging, holography, machine vision, and other fields.

Abstract:High numerical aperture (NA) metalenses with large focusing efficiency are crucial for various applications in modern optics and photonics, particularly in high resolution imaging, high directivity lasing process and so on. Recent progresses have been achieved in designing high NA metalenses which can surpass conventional ones but mainly in the visible and infrared regimes by using all-dielectric metasurfaces. Here, multilayer phase gradient metallic metasurfaces sandwiched by filling dielectrics are employed to design high NA and large efficiency metalenses in the low spectrums. Benefiting from its high transmission amplitude and the full phase control to the incident waves of the proposed gradient meta-atoms with a double split ring resonator, the designed ultra-thin and small footprint four-layer metalens (5λ × 5λ × 0.23λ, λ is wavelength) demonstrates a high NA in the order of 0.8 and the large focusing efficiency around 40% according to the full-wave simulations and experimental measurements. Furthermore, the influences of the dielectric thickness and the layer number of stacked meta-atoms on the presented high NA metalens are investigated. The results reveal that the NA of proposed metalens can be surprisingly further improved from 0.8 to 0.9 by increasing dielectric thickness and/or the focusing efficiency can be enhanced to above 50% by adding the layer number of the stacked meta-atoms. These findings also imply that our high NA metalens in low spectrum can be compatible to the standard printed circuit board fabrication and also posses of good robustness to the metasurface layer number. The presented work provides new vistas to develop high NA and large efficiency metalens in low microwave or Terahertz (THz) spectrum, where the metallic metasurfaces are commonly used. Besides, it can benefit to the development of various novel metadevices such as miniaturized high-gain lens antenna, compact cloaks and many others in modern microwave engineering and/or THz optics.

Abstract:A metalens usually has several critical parameters, such as the achromatic focusing, focal length, focal efficiency, numerical aperture (NA), and so on, which requires the machine learning tool to give a comprehensive prediction ability on the multi‐performance index involving all these parameters. As a first step toward this goal, this work proposes a deep neural network tool that can design an achromatic metalens with a high focusing efficiency. Metalenses with both achromatic performance and high focusing efficiency are always challenging, especially in visible range. In this work, a deep learning model is developed to accelerate the design of achromatic metalenses based on the geometric phase theory. During the building process of the phase response library and selection of the nano‐structures, converted transmission coefficients including both phase and amplitude are considered in order to ensure the achromatic focusing, as well as a high focusing efficiency. To test the performance of the design developed from the deep learning model, numerical simulations are performed in the visible wavelengths from 428 to 652 nm, which show a focal length of 266 μm with the deviation under 5%, and the average focusing efficiency reaches 52%.

Abstract:Metalenses consist of nanostructures that locally control the optical phase. They offer many degrees of freedom for manipulating a wavefront, which gives a number of advantages over bulk lenses, such as the straightforward elimination of spherical aberrations and an ultrathin dimension. Here, we compare the phase profiles of metalenses made of different dielectric materials and note the advantage of high refractive index materials. Higher refractive index materials such as silicon afford more degrees of freedom in terms of design and fabrication and are the basis for high-performance metalenses, even in the visible. Nevertheless, the imaging performance of single-element metalenses is still limited by coma and chromatic aberrations. This limitation is exacerbated by high numerical apertures and large areas. We review the challenges and trade-offs between numerical aperture, field of view, coma, chromatic aberration, and size. We also evaluate different phase engineering approaches to address these problems. We believe this review will help guide future developments in high-performance metalenses toward wide-field and high-resolution imaging, enabling scientific high-end miniature imaging systems.
A broadband achromatic metalens for focusing and imaging in the visible

Abstract:A key goal of metalens research is to achieve wavefront shaping of light using optical elements with thicknesses on the order of the wavelength. Such miniaturization is expected to lead to compact, nanoscale optical devices with applications in cameras, lighting, displays and wearable optics. However, retaining functionality while reducing device size has proven particularly challenging. For example, so far there has been no demonstration of broadband achromatic metalenses covering the entire visible spectrum. Here, we show that by judicious design of nanofins on a surface, it is possible to simultaneously control the phase, group delay and group delay dispersion of light, thereby achieving a transmissive achromatic metalens with large bandwidth. We demonstrate diffraction-limited achromatic focusing and achromatic imaging from 470 to 670 nm. Our metalens comprises only a single layer of nanostructures whose thickness is on the order of the wavelength, and does not involve spatial multiplexing or cascading. While this initial design (numerical aperture of 0.2) has an efficiency of about 20% at 500 nm, we discuss ways in which our approach may be further optimized to meet the demand of future applications.

Abstract:Achromatic metalenses are promising alternatives to traditional lenses, allowing the miniaturization of optical systems. However, the limitation due to the group delay range of the meta‐atoms that can be fabricated requires a trade‐off relationship between the working bandwidth, numerical aperture (NA), and aperture of the achromatic metalens operating in a continuous spectrum. Considering that light sources used in most optical systems to illuminate or display images in most optical systems generate multiwavelength light with a narrow bandwidth, an efficient end‐to‐end inverse design framework for multiwavelength achromatic metalenses is implemented. As a proof of concept, an achromatic metalens with an NA of 0.3 and a diameter of 115 µm at four visible wavelengths and arbitrary linear polarization is designed and experimentally demonstrated. The measured results show a maximum focal length shift of 5.2778%. The proposed strategy avoids complicated physical models, enabling the integration of complex functionalities into a single metasurface, thereby driving the design of efficient and emerging devices.
High Numerical Aperture Microwave Metalens

Abstract:The numerical aperture (NA) of a lens determines its focusing resolution capability and the maximum light collection or emission angle. In this Letter, an ultrathin high NA metalens operating in the microwave band is designed and demonstrated both numerically and experimentally. The proposed element is constructed by a multi-layer complementary split ring resonator, which can cover full 2 π phase shift simultaneously with high transmission magnitude by varying its radius gradually. The numerical and experimental results reveal that the designed ultrathin (thickness is only ∼ 0.23 λ ) metalens can focus normal incident microwave efficiently to a spot of full width at half-maximum (FWHM) as small as ∼ 0.54 λ with a corresponding high NA exceeding 0.9. Besides, the high NA metalens also possesses a relatively large focusing efficiency with a peak 48% within considered broad frequency range from 7.5 to 10 GHz. The performances of the presented metalens can be comparable or even superior to nowadays high-quality optical metalenses and represent an important step to develop a high-performance metalens in low spectrum. Besides, it can greatly facilitate the development of some novel miniaturized devices like a high-gain low profile scanning antenna, an ultra-compact retroreflector, and cloaks.

Abstract:Compared with conventional lenses, metalenses can offer smaller form factor, light weight and new functionality, and have become the focus of the recent investigations of metasurface. To date, quite a lot of studies have been reported for chromatic aberration correction of metalenses. Noting most work was carried out to satisfy the required group delay or dispersion by introducing sophisticated and integrated nanopillars, which are obtained using computationally intensive global search algorithms. Generally, the design is time-consuming. Here, we propose an alternative scheme, where metalens that corrects the chromatic aberration can be designed by optimizing the spectral degree of freedom C(ω), rather than relying on time-consuming algorithms. The proposed metalens is compatible with the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication process. The numerically demonstrated metalens with a diameter of 200 μm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.24 has a small focal length fractional change (FLFC) of 4.1% over the wavelength of 9∼12 μm with an average efficiency of 51.7% in transmission mode. Moreover, the effect of fabrication deviations on the performance of the metalens is analyzed, showing critical dimension (CD) bias, sidewall angle and pillar height all have different levels of influence on the performance of the metalens.

Abstract:Achromatic metalens composed of arrays of subwavelength nanostructures with spatially varying geometries is attractive for a number of optical applications. However, the limited degree of freedom in the single layer achromatic metasurface design makes it difficult to simultaneously guarantee the sufficient phase dispersion and high diffraction efficiency, which restricts the achromatic bandwidth and efficiency of metalens. Here we propose and demonstrate a high efficiency achromatic metalens with diffraction-limited focusing capability at the wavelength ranging from 1000 nm to 1700 nm. The metalens comprises two stacked nanopillar metasurfaces, by which the required focusing phase and dispersion compensation can be controlled independently. As a result, in addition to the large achromatic bandwidth, the averaged focusing efficiency of the bilayer metalens is higher than 64% at the near-infrared region. Our design opens up the possibility to obtain the required phase dispersion and efficiency simultaneously, which is of great significance to design broad-band metasurface-based optical devices.
