Abstract:In a recent interesting Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 140401 (2012)] I. Bialynicki-Birula and his coauthor have derived the uncertainty relation for the photons in three dimensions. However, some of their arguments are problematical, and this impacts their conclusion.

Abstract:Yuan and Feng (Eur. Phys. J. Plus 138:70, 2023) recently proposed a modification of the nested Mach–Zehnder interferometer experiment performed by Danan et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 111:240402, 2013) and argued that photons give "contradictory" answers about where they have been, when traces are locally imprinted on them in different ways. They concluded that their results are comprehensible from what they call the "three-path interference viewpoint," but difficult to explain from the "discontinuous trajectory" viewpoint advocated by Danan et al. We argue that the weak trace approach (the basis of the "discontinuous trajectory" viewpoint) provides a consistent explanation of the Yuan–Feng experiment. The contradictory messages of the photons are just another example of photons lying about where they have been when the experimental method of Danan et al. is applied in an inappropriate setup.

Abstract:In [JETP Lett. 105(3), 152 (2017)], a clear and comprehensive analysis of the paradoxical results of experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240402 (2013)] was carried out on the basis of the classical wave theory of light, which presupposes the continuity of possible of light paths. It was shown that the paradoxical results of the experiment are due not to the discontinuity of the trajectories of light, as claimed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240402 (2013)], but to the used way of detecting the path of photons. The experiment modification proposed in [JETP Lett. 105(3), 152 (2017)] allows us to eliminate the seeming discontinuity of the light trajectories. In Comment [arXiv:1705.02137 (2017)] to the article such modification is declared unreasonable. This Response to the Comment shows that this statement is not based on clear and logical arguments. Instead, it is only asserted that the proposed modification "violates the faithfulness indication of the trace" of photons. Therefore, the Comment's criticism can not be considered as well-founded. Consequently, the conclusion of [JETP Lett. 105(3), 152 (2017)] that a new concept of disconnected trajectories proposed by the authors of work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240402 (2013)] is unnecessary, remains valid.

Abstract:Heisenberg guessed, after he established the matrix quantum mechanics, that the non-commutativity of the matrices of position and momentum implied that the position and momentum of a particle could not be precisely simultaneously determined. He consequently conjectured that time and energy should also have a similar relationship. Soon after, Robertson derived an inequality concerning the space coordinate and momentum, which was thought to be the mathematical expression of the uncertainty relation guessed by Heisenberg. Since then, people have tried various devices to prove the correctness of these two relations. However, no one conducted a careful analysis of Heisenberg's primary paper. In this work, we point out some serious problems in Heisenberg's paper and the literature talking about the uncertainty relationships: the physical concepts involved in the uncertainty relations are not clear; one physical concept had more than one explanation, i.e., switching concepts; there has never been measurement experiment to support the relations. The conclusions are that the so-called coordinate–momentum uncertainty relation has never been related to actual measurement and there does not exist a time–energy uncertainty relation.

Abstract:Misinterpretation in the preceding Comment of my recent analysis of the past of a photon is corrected. There is nothing in this analysis which is "contrary to the usual quantum expectations" but, nevertheless, it does provide "further understanding and interpretation of the system considered". In particular, it teaches us that the naive common sense argument frequently used in the literature including the Comment has to be abandoned.

Abstract:As a foundation of quantum physics, uncertainty relations describe ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertainty relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position and momentum operators, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle points exactly to the attainable area of the variances of position and momentum. Moreover, for finite-dimensional systems, we prove that the corresponding area is necessarily semialgebraic; in other words, this set can be represented via finite polynomial equations and inequalities, or any finite union of such sets. In particular, we give the analytical characterization of the areas of variances of (a) a pair of one-qubit observables and (b) a pair of projective observables for arbitrary dimension, and give the first experimental observation of such areas in a photonic system.

Abstract:Recently, using a specific example involving neutron spin, Nakazato et al, [Phys. Lett A 199 (1995) 27] argued that the uncertainty principle would impose a remarkable limitation on the mathematical limit involved in the quantum Zeno effect. In this paper we show that it is impossible for Nakazato et al. to obtain this limitation by the uncertainty relation, because an unsuitable assumption has been used in their deduction process. Abstract:We present a study of the relation between wave-particle duality and quantum uncertainty in a two-path interferometer and derive equalities and inequalities involving the visibility (representing wave-like behavior), the predictability (representing particle-like behavior), and their variances. We experimentally demonstrate that, for a single photon in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, these quantities are related via an equation that connects both duality and uncertainty. This relation holds for the single-photon source prepared either in a pure state or a mixed state.

Abstract:The Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation quantitatively expresses the impossibility of jointly sharp preparation of incompatible observables. However it does not capture the concept of incompatible observables because it can be trivial even for two incompatible observables. We experimentally demonstrate the new stronger uncertainty relations proposed by Maccone and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 260401 (2014)] relating on that sum of variances are valid in a state-dependent manner and the lower bound is guaranteed to be nontrivial for two observables being incompatible on the state of the system being measured. The behaviour we find agrees with the predictions of quantum theory and obeys the new uncertainty relations even for the special states which trivialize Heisenberg-Robertson relation. We realize a direct measurement model and give the first experimental investigation of the strengthened relations.

Abstract:Several different statements and proof methods of uncertainty relation are presented. The agreement and disagreement among these statements are compared and analyzed. New developments of relevant quantum theory are described in association with some recent experiments such as the Tonomura’s Electron Diffraction experiment and Zeilinger’s Neutron Diffraction experiment. These experiments fully proved that a single particle has wave nature. Uncertainty relation turns out to be a natural consequence of the wave nature of particles, so it is suitable for a single particle.

Abstract:It is well known that the problem of divergence in the physical interpretation of quantum mechanics originating from the uncertainty principle has not yet been resolved. Attempting to clear the constraints and confusion of this situation for the further development of quantum technology, this article traces the original derivation and the physical meaning of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, analyzes the Einstein photon-box thought-experiment, and studies the limits of the relationships under different action scenarios. By analyzing the statistical distribution of quantum mechanical quantities, the result of the destruction of the non-statistical interpretation uncertainty relation in the electromagnetic interaction scenarios is obtained; through analyzing of the photon box thought experiment, the logical contradiction of Bohr's argument was discovered; by examining the set of interaction scenarios, a description method for determining the mechanical state of microscopic particles was put forward; according to the analysis of the hydrogen atom transition radiation process, basing on the principle of conservation of energy, the result of the lower limit of the uncertainty relation in the gravitational scene is much smaller than that in the existing electromagnetic scene is obtained, which mean the lower limit of uncertainty principle is broken. The research in this article has received an affirmative answer to Einstein's God does not play dice with the Universe. The research of this article is helpful to enhance the understanding of quantum physical phenomena in the microscopic world, and we hope it could render some theoretical support to investigating the physical basis of quantum technology.

Abstract:For quantum particles in a Boltzmann state, we derive an inequality between momentum uncertainty $\Delta p$ and thermal de Broglie wavelength $\lambda_{\rm th}$, expressed as $\Delta p \geq \sqrt{2\pi}\hbar/\lambda_{\rm th}$, as a corollary of the Boltzmann lower bound for the Heisenberg uncertainty product proposed in the previous work [EPL, 143, 20001 (2023)]

Abstract:There are two alternative methods used in the literature to calculate the incoherent part of the spectrum of light scattered by an atomic system. In the first, one calculates the spectrum of the total light scattered by the system and obtains the incoherent part by subtracting the coherent part. In the second method, one introduces the fluctuation operators and obtains the incoherent part of the spectrum by taking the Fourier transform of the two-time correlation function of the fluctuation operators. These two methods have been recognized for years as completely equivalent for evaluating the incoherent part of the spectrum. In a recent paper, Xu [Phys. Rev. A 78, 013407 (2008)] showed that there are discrepancies between the incoherent parts of the stationary spectrum of a three-level Lambda-type system calculated with these two methods. The predicted discrepancies can be severe that over a wide range of the Rabi frequencies and atomic decay rates, the spectrum calculated with the variance method can have negative values. In this Comment, we show that there are no discrepancies between these two methods. We show the equivalence of these two methods that leads to the same incoherent spectra which are positive for all frequencies independent of values of the parameters involved. We also identify the source of the discrepancy, that is, in an incorrect treatment of the incoherent part of the spectrum calculated with the two-time correlation function of the fluctuation operators.

Abstract:As a very fundamental principle in quantum physics, uncertainty principle has been studied intensively via various uncertainty inequalities. Based on the information measure introduced by Brukner and Zeilinger in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 3354 (1999)], we derive an uncertainty conservation relation in the presence of quantum memory. We show that the sum of measurement uncertainties over a complete set of mutually unbiased bases on a subsystem is equal to a total uncertainty determined by the initial bipartite state. Hence for a given bipartite system the uncertainty is conserved and the uncertainty relation is given by an equality. When the total uncertainty vanishes, all the uncertainties related to every mutually unbiased base measurement are zero, which is substantially different from the uncertainty relation given by Berta et. al. [Nat. Phys. 6, 659 (2010)] where an uncertainty inequality is presented. By directly measuring the corresponding quantum mechanical observables on a 5-qubit spin system, we experimentally verify the uncertainty conservation relation in the presence of quantum memory without quantum state tomography.

Uncertainty Relations for the Relativistic Jackiw-Nair Anyon: A First Principles Derivation

Abstract:In this paper we have explicitly computed the $position-position$ and $position-momentum$ (Heisenberg) Uncertainty Relations for the model of relativistic particles with arbitrary spin, proposed by Jackiw and Nair ref.[1] as a model for Anyon, in a purely quantum mechanical framework. This supports (via Schwarz inequality) the conjecture that anyons live in a 2-dimensional \textit{noncommutative} space. We have computed the non-trivial uncertainty relation between anyon coordinates, ${\sqrt{\Delta x^2\Delta y^2}}=\hbar\bar{\Theta}_{xy}$, using the recently constructed anyon wave function ref.[6], in the framework of ref.[7]. We also compute the Heisenberg (position-momentum) uncertainty relation for anyons. Lastly we show that the identical \textit{formalism} when applied to electrons, yield a trivial position uncertainty relation, consistent with their living in a 3-dimensional commutative space.

Abstract:Heisenberg's uncertainty relations have played an essential role in quantum physics since its very beginning. The uncertainty relations in the modern quantum formalism have become a fundamental limitation on the joint measurements of general quantum mechanical observables, going much beyond the original discussion of the trade-off between knowing a particle's position and momentum. Recently, the uncertainty relations have generated a considerable amount of lively debate as a result of the new inequalities proposed as extensions of the original uncertainty relations. We report an experimental test of one of the new Heisenberg's uncertainty relations using a single 40Ca+ ion trapped in a harmonic potential. By performing unitary operations under carrier transitions, we verify the uncertainty relation proposed by Busch, Lahti, and Werner (BLW) based on a general error-trade-off relation for joint measurements on two compatible observables. The positive operator-valued measure, required by the compatible observables, is constructed by single-qubit operations, and the lower bound of the uncertainty, as observed, is satisfied in a state-independent manner. Our results provide the first evidence confirming the BLW-formulated uncertainty at a single-spin level and will stimulate broad interests in various fields associated with quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle is deemed as one of cornerstones in quantum mechanics, and exploring its lower limit of uncertainty will be helpful to understand the principle's nature. In this study, we propose a generalized entropic uncertainty relation for arbitrary multiple-observable in multipartite system, and further derive a tighter lower bound by considering Holevo quality and mutual information. Importantly, we detailedly discuss the proposed uncertainty relations and quantum coherence in the context of Schwarzschild space-time. It is interesting to find that Hawking radiation will damage the coherence of the physically accessible region and increase the uncertainty. Furthermore, we argue that the properties of the uncertainty in Schwarzschild space-time can be explained from the systems' purity and the information redistribution of the different regions. Therefore, it is believed that our findings provide the generalized entropic uncertainty relations in multipartite systems, which may facilitate us deeper understanding of quantumness and information paradox of the black holes.
