Abstract:Ag/AgBr/TiO2 was prepared by the deposition-precipitation method and was found to be a novel visible light driven photocatalyst. The catalyst showed high efficiency for the degradation of nonbiodegradable azodyes and the killing of Escherichia coli under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm). The catalyst activity was maintained effectively after successive cyclic experiments under UV or visible light irradiation without the destruction of AgBr. On the basis of the characterization of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy, the surface Ag species mainly exist as Ago in the structure of all samples before and after reaction, and Ag-0 species scavenged h(VB)(+) and then trapped e(CB)(-) in the process of photocatalytic reaction, inhibiting the decomposition of AgBr. The studies of ESR and H2O2 formation revealed that (OH)-O-center dot and O-2(center dot-) were formed in visible light irradiated aqueous Ag/AgBr/TiO2 suspension, while there was no reactive oxygen species in the visible light irradiated Ag-0/TiO2 system. The results indicate that AgBr is the main photoactive species for the destruction of azodyes and bacteria under visible light. In addition, the bactericidal efficiency and killing mechanism of Ag/AgBr/TiO2 under visible light irradiation are illustrated and discussed.
Room-temperature Fabrication of Bismuth Oxybromide/oxyiodide Photocatalyst and Efficient Degradation of Phenolic Pollutants under Visible Light.

Abstract:Bismuth oxybromide/oxyiodide (Bi4O5BrxI2-x) photocatalysts were successfully fabricated using a facile homogeneous precipitation method at room temperature. The obtained Bi4O5BrxI2-x demonstrated highly enhanced visible-light performances compared with Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2. The poducts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The DRS analysis shows that the band gap structures of Bi4O5BrxI2-x have been gradually modulated by changing the Br/I molar ratio. The obtained Bi4O5BrxI2-x samples have exhibited efficient photocatalytic activities in decomposing resorcinol, o-phenylphenol, and 4-tert-butylphenol. The Br/I molar ratio has great influence on the activity of the photocatalysts, and Bi4O5Br0.6I1.4 exhibited the best activity which was about 2.77 and 1.80 times higher than that of Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2, respectively. The degradation intermediates were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS), and the possible degradation pathway of resorcinol over Bi4O5BrxI2-x photocatalysts was proposed. The strong visible light absorption, high charge separation efficiency, and proper band potentials should be responsible for the excellent activity of Bi4O5BrxI2-x photocatalyst. Trapping experiments using radical scavengers confirmed the generation of O2-, OH, and h+, but only O2- and h+ have played the chief role in removing organic pollutants from water.

Abstract:The synthesis of the Ag/AgBr/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposite was achieved through a facile hydrothermal method combined with in situ photodeposition. Subsequently, its efficacy in catalyzing the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation was systematically investigated. The Bi2MoO6 samples and the Ag/AgBr/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites underwent comprehensive characterization using a suite of techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analyses unveiled a homogeneous distribution of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of AgBr/Bi2MoO6, indicative of the successful formation of the composite. To assess the photocatalytic efficiency, the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation was employed as a benchmark. Notably, the incorporation of Ag nanosheets, serving as electron mediators and Schottky barriers, facilitated efficient electron transfer between Bi2MoO6 and AgBr. Consequently, the photocatalytic activity of the ternary Z-type heterogeneous Ag/AgBr/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites surpassed that of the pure Bi2MoO6 and AgBr samples. Remarkably, under 12 min of visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic activity of the Ag/AgBr/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites reached an impressive 99.99 %.
Facile Fabrication of Heterogeneous TiO2/BiOCl Composite with Superior Visible-Light-driven Performance Towards Cr(VI) and Tetracycline

Abstract:Heavy metals and antibiotics are known for their difficulty of removal and enormous harmful intermediates released during degradation as well as the great threat to the health of human beings, which arouses urgent demand for highly efficient photocatalysts as solution. Thus, in this work, TiO2/BiOCl heterogeneous composite was synthesized via a facile and low-cost hydrolysis-precipitation method at room temperature without organic reagent. The characteristic results indicate anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with smaller grain size (around 15 nm) were uniformly dispersed on the surface of BiOCl nanosheets to form the heterogeneous structure. The hybrid catalyst exhibits higher photocatalytic performance for both Cr(VI) and tetracycline, and the synergistic degradation effect is demonstrated in the co-existent system. The superior photoactivity is mainly attributed to the excellent visible light capture capability and effective separation of photogenerated electron-holes pairs. Moreover, the main active radicals for Cr(VI) are photo-induced electrons (e(-)), and that for tetracycline are superoxide radical (center dot O-2(-)) and holes (h(+)). Furthermore, the effect of mass ratio of TiO2 and BiOCl on the photocatalytic performance was discussed and a speculated degradation mechanism was also proposed. In summary, this work would provide significant meaningful guidance for the development of Ti-based composites in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Agl/Ti02 was prepared by the deposition-precipitation method and was found to be a novel visible light driven photocatalyst. The catalyst showed high efficiency for the degradation of the nonbiodegradable azodyes reactive red K-2G, reactive brilliant red X-3B, reactive red K-2BP, and reactive yellow KD-3G under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm). The catalyst's activity was maintained effectively after successive cyclic experiments under visible irradiation without the destruction of AgI. On the basis of the characterization of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy, the structure of AgI loaded on TiO2 did not significantly change before and after reaction. K-2G was completely decolorized and partly mineralized. The main intermediates are the small organic acids besides CO2 and cyanuric acid, which is photostable. The *OH is the main active oxygen species in the photocatalytic reaction by the studies of electron spin resonance and the effect of radical scavengers.

Abstract:A novel visible-light-active material was prepared by dispersion of AgI on amorphous TiO2 through simple one-pot process (AgI/Am–TiO2–S). For comparison, AgI sensitized TiO2 (amorphous, anatase and P25) were also prepared via traditional deposition–precipitation method. The samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, TGA–DSC, UV–Vis-DRS, BET, and etc. Larger specific surface area, negative shift of flat band potential, as well as greatly reduced charge transfer resistance were observed for AgI/Am–TiO2–S comparing to other samples. Moreover, with the same molar of initial Ti and Ag, the weight of AgI/Am–TiO2–S obtained was the heaviest, due to large amount of surface titania hydrate. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared AgI/titania samples were evaluated by the reduction of Cr(VI) in the absence or presence of organic pollutants (dyes, phenol). AgI/Am–TiO2–S always presented the highest photocatalytic activity. The estimated kCr(VI) on AgI/Am–TiO2–S was about 2 times that on AgI/P25–TiO2 in the absence/presence of RhB. Superior stability was also observed in the cyclic runs indicating that the as-prepared AgI/Am–TiO2–S is highly desirable for the remediation of Cr(VI)-organic co-contaminated wastewaters.

Abstract:The photocatalytic inactivation of pathogenic bacteria in water was investigated systematically with AgBr/TiO2 under visible light (λ>420nm) irradiation. The catalyst was found to be highly effective for the killing of Escherichia coli, a Gram-negative bacterium, and Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium. The decomposition of the cell wall and cell membrane was directly observed by TEM and further confirmed by K+ leakage from the inactivated bacteria. A possible cell damage mechanism by visible light-driven AgBr/TiO2 is proposed. In addition, the effects of pH, inorganic ions on bacterial photocatalytic inactivation were investigated. The electrostatic force interaction of the bacteria–catalyst is crucial for the efficiency of disinfection. Moreover, AgBr/TiO2 supported on porous nickel showed much higher bactericidal activity than fixed P25 TiO2 under visible or near UV light irradiation.

Abstract:The Agl/AgBr/BiOBr0.75I0.25 nanocomposites were synthesized by a solvothermal process, followed by an in-situ ion exchange reaction. The disinfection activities of the as-synthesized photocatalyst to model cell type, Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli), were investigated under visible light irradiation condition lambda >= 400 nm). Results showed that 80 mg/L AgI/AgBr/BiOBr0.75I0.25 could completely inactivate 3 x 10(7) CFU mL(-1) E. coli cells within 30 mm under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the bactericidal mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic disinfection process were systematically investigated. Ag+ ions released from the nanocomposites negligibly contributed to the bactericidal activity, while active species including h(+), e(-) and O-center dot(2)- played important roles in the disinfection system. Direct contact of bacterial cells and nanoparticles was found to be the prerequisite for both the generation of O-center dot(2)- and the disinfection processes. The disruption of cell membrane and emission of cytoplasm directly inactivated E. coil cells. In addition, AgI/AgBr/BiOBr0.75I0.25 exhibited strong antibacterial activity toward E. coli even in four consecutive reused cycles. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The photocatalytic disinfection of pathogenic bacteria in water was investigated systematically with AgI/TiO2 under visible light (lambda > 420 nm) irradiation. The catalyst was found to be highly effective in killing Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The adsorbed *OH and hVB+ on the surface of the catalyst were proposed to be the main active oxygen species by study of electron spin resonance and the effect of radical scavengers. The process of destruction of the cell wall and the cell membrane was verified by TEM, potassium ion leakage, lipid peroxidation, and FT-IR measurements. Some products from photocatalytic degradation of bacteria such as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids were identified by FT-IR spectroscopy. These results suggested that the photocatalytic degradation of the cell structure caused the cell death. The electrostatic force interaction of the bacteria-catalyst significantly affected the efficiency of disinfection on the basis of the E. coli inactivation under different conditions.

Abstract:Enhancing interfacial charge transfer is a promising approach to improve the efficiency of photocatalysts. This research effectively exploited an Ag-modified Z-scheme TiO 2 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterojunction for photocatalytic degradation and disinfection under visible light. The catalyst was fabricated using simple hydrothermal and photo-deposition methods, and the characterization outcomes revealed that a built-in electric field (BIEF) was generated in the TiO 2 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterojunctions, which significantly promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers and increases light absorption efficiency. Besides, the theoretical calculation demonstrated that electron migration between TiO 2 and Ag resulted in a strong coupling on the surface, which serves as the foundation for driving photoelectric charge transfer. Furthermore, the TiO 2 /Bi 2 MoO 6 /Ag-45 displayed 459% and 512% higher degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) after 100 min compared to pristine TiO 2 . Moreover, the complexes wholly inactivated gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and significantly inhibited the growth of gram-positive Staphylococcus albus ( S. albus ) after 200 min. Additionally, we have deduced the potential degradation pathways of TC-HCl and CIP and photocatalytic mechanisms. The research results provide an idea to solve the problems of limited light absorption range and rapid carrier combination speed of traditional photocatalytic materials, which is expected to be applied in the field of actual wastewater treatment.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline by AgI/BiVO4 Heterojunction under Visible-Light Irradiation: Mineralization Efficiency and Mechanism.

Abstract:Recently, visible-light-driven photocatalysis is of great interest in the environmental pollutant remediation. In the present study, a novel heterostructured photocatalyst AgI/BiVO4 was synthesized by an in situ precipitation procedure. The AgI/BiVO4 heterojunctions exhibited excellent photoactivity for the refractory pollutant (tetracycline (TC), a typical antibiotic) decomposition under visible light illumination. The synthetic sample with 1:4 mass ratio of AgI:BiVO4 possessed the highest photocatalytic performance in all of the as-prepared catalysts. The TC molecules were substantially eliminated (94.91%) within 60 min, and degradation efficiency was considerably better than those of bare BiVO4 (62.68%) and AgI (75.43%) under identical conditions. Simultaneously, 90.46% of TOC removal was also achieved within 120 min, suggesting that the mineralization was superior and further confirmed by three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs). The XRD, XPS, DRS, and PL measurements revealed that a small amount of Ag nanoparticles was produced at the early photodegradation process. The structure transformation from AgI/BiVO4 (double-type) to AgI/Ag/BiVO4 (sandwich-like) improved the corresponding visible-light absorption performance. The self-assembly Z-scheme heterojunction that consisted of AgI, Ag, and BiVO4 also efficiently accelerated photoinduced electron-hole pairs' separation and ultimately improved the efficiency of TC degradation. The responsible photocatalytic mechanism was discussed in detail on the basis of the reactive species capturing tests and ESR analysis, and the experimental results had been validated that superoxide radicals and holes played a vital role during the photocatalytic process. Furthermore, TC degradation efficiency was not of significant loss after four consecutive cycles, suggesting the excellent photostability of AgI/BiVO4 nanocomposite. These features demonstrate that the AgI/BiVO4 heterojunction has great application potential for refractory pollutants' removal from wastewater.

Abstract:A novel visible light-driven AgBr/AgCl@ZIF-8 catalyst was synthesized by a simple and rapid method. The composition and structure of the photocatalyst were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-DRS, and XPS. It could be observed that the 2-methylimidazole zinc salt (ZIF-8) exhibited the rhombic dodecahedron morphology with the AgCl and AgBr particles evenly distributed around it. The composite photocatalyst AgBr/AgCl@ZIF-8 showed good photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial properties. The degradation rate of RhB solution was 98%, with 60 min of irradiation of visible light, and almost all P. aeruginosaudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were inactivated under the irradiation of 90 min. In addition, the prepared catalyst had excellent stability and reusability. Based on the free radical capture experiment, ·O2− and h+ were believed to be the main active substances, and possible photocatalytic degradation and sterilization mechanisms of AgBr/AgCl@ZIF-8 were proposed.

Bactericidal Activity and Mechanisms of BiOBr-AgBr under Both Dark and Visible Light Irradiation Conditions.

Abstract:BiOBr-AgBr hybrid photocatalysts were synthesized via a facile precipitation and in-situ ion exchange method at room temperature. The as-synthesized photocatalysts were well characterized with different techniques. The disinfection activities of BiOBr-AgBr towards model bacterial strain Gram-negative Escherichia coil (E. coli) were tested under both dark and visible light irradiation conditions. 1 x 10(7) CFU/mL of E. coli cells could be completely inactivated by BiOBr-AgBr with the optimal silver amount (BiOBr-0.5AgBr) in 24 min under visible light irradiation, while 1.5 log CFU/mL decrease of viable cell density was achieved at the same experiment duration under dark condition. Obviously, with the visible light irradiation, the bactericidal efficiency BiOBr-0.5AgBr was significantly enhanced. The subsequent disinfection mechanism analysis showed that Ag+ released from BiOBr-0.5AgBr did not contribute to E. coli inactivation, while reactive oxygen species including h(+), surfaced bounded (OH)-O-center dot, O-center dot(2)-, and H2O2 were found to play important roles in the disinfection process. The presence of dissolved O-2 and the direct contact of cells with photocatalysts was found to be essential for the disinfection process. The reactive species induced the destruction of cell membrane, thus led to the death of bacteria. In addition, BiOBr-0.5AgBr exhibited good bactericidal activity within a wide pH range (5-9) and contained effective antibacterial activity even in fifth consecutive reuse cycles. Due to the stronger redox potential and better separation of charge carriers induced by the Z-scheme structure, the optimal synthesized AgI/Bi2MoO6 exhibited excellent disinfection activity towards both Gram-negative strain Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive strain Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) under visible light irradiation. 5.0 x 10(7) CFU mL(-1) of E. coli and S. aureus cells were completely disinfected within 30 min and 90 min, respectively. Ag+ ions did not contribute to the disinfection activity, while active species including h(+), O-center dot(2)-, e(-), and H2O2 contributed to the cell inactivation. By changing the interaction force and being involved in the photocatalytic reactions, the common anions (Cl-, NOT, SO42-, and H2PO4-) would affect the disinfection activity. Moreover, Agl/Bi2MoO6 exhibited effective disinfection activity in four consecutive reused cycles. Thus, AgI/Bi2MoO6 could be used as a promising photocatalyst for water disinfection. Synthesis of Flower-Like AgI/BiOCOOH p-n Heterojunctions With Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance for the Removal of Toxic Pollutants

Abstract:In this study, flower-like AgI/BiOCOOH heterojunctions were constructed through a two-step procedure involving the solvothermal synthesis of BiOCOOH microflowers followed by AgI modification using a precipitation method. These novel photocatalysts were systematically examined by XRD, UV-vis DRS, SEM, TEM, EDS, and PL spectroscopy techniques. The AgI/BiOCOOH heterojunction were studied as a decent photocatalyst for the removal of the industrial dye (rhodamine B, and methyl blue) and antibiotic (tetracycline) under visible light. The AgI/BiOCOOH heterojunctions are much more active than bare BiOCOOH, and AgI, which could be ascribed to the improved separation of charge carriers, resulting from the formation of p-n heterojunction between two constituents. The holes (h<sup>+</sup>) and superoxide radical (•O <math><msubsup><mrow></mrow> <mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow> <mrow><mo>-</mo></mrow> </msubsup> </math> ) were detected as the main active species responsible for the pollutant degradation. The results showed that a highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic system was developed for the decomposition of toxic pollutants.

Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Bacteria Disinfection by G-C3n4-Agbr

Abstract:g-C3N4-AgBr was synthesized by depositing AgBr nanoparticles onto g-C3N4. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and Photoluminescence (PL) spectra were employed to characterize the as-synthesized photocatalysts. The disinfection activities towards representative Gram-negative strain E. coli and Gram-positive strain S. aureus were examined under visible light irradiation. Complete inactivation of 3×106CFU/mL viable cell density was reached in 60min for E. coli and 150min for S. aureus, respectively. Ag+ released from the photocatalysts did not contribute to the photocatalytic disinfection process. Direct contact of g-C3N4-AgBr composites and bacterial cells, as well as the presence of O2 was indispensable for the cell inactivation. Photo-generated holes, surface bounded OH, and indirect generation of intracellular active species played important roles in disinfection process of g-C3N4-AgBr under visible light irradiation. The disruption of outside structure of cells as well as inner cell injury led to the inactivation. High pH condition led to increasing the cell disinfection due to the generation of surface bounded OH.
