Abstract:The development of organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) is a potential way to conquer the dilemma of OSCs based on fullerene derivatives acceptors (FM). In this article, four promising NFAs, two excellent polymers and eight donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces based on NFAs and polymers are theoretically investigated using DFT and TD-DFT. Geometric structures, electronic and optical absorption properties of NFAs and polymers were studied in details. By calculating the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels, exciton binding energies, optical absorptions and analyzing density-of-states (DOS) and charge difference density (CDD), the roles of NFAs (or polymers) in the FMO energy levels and optical absorptions of D/A interfaces were revealed, and the relationship between exciton binding energy and characteristic of charge separation was uncovered. The obtained charge separation/recombination rates of D/A interfaces prove that all designed D/A interfaces have great potentials for application in OSCs, and this work of optical absorption of D/A interfaces under external electric fields offers a considerable method for tuning the performance of OSC device. We hope our investigation can provide a useful guideline for enhancing the performance of OSCs.

Abstract:In the past two years, non-fullerene acceptors including polymers and small molecules have become the focus of many research efforts. Fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs) have shown efficiencies of up to 6.8% for solution-processed devices, and even up to 8.4% for vacuum-deposited devices, which have been significantly improved relative to those disclosed 2 years ago (generally <4%). Non-fullerene acceptor materials are a new focus in the OSC field. Tailoring extended fused-rings with electron-deficient groups is an effective strategy for design of acceptors. Here, very recent developments in several systems of fused ring-based electron acceptors, such as halogenated (sub or subna)phthalocyanine, imide-functionalized rylene, and linear fused-rings end capped with electron deficient blocks, are reviewed.

Abstract:In this work, sidechain engineering on conjugated fused-ring acceptors for conformation locking is demonstrated as an effective molecular design strategy for high-performance nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs). A novel nonfullerene acceptor (ITC6-IC) is designed and developed by introducing long alkyl chains into the terminal electron-donating building blocks. ITC6-IC has achieved definite conformation with a planar structure and better solubility in common organic solvents. The weak electron-donating hexyl upshifts the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of ITC6-IC, resulting in a higher V-OC in comparison to the widely used ITIC. The OSCs based on PBDB-T:ITC6-IC reveal a promising power conversion efficiency of 11.61% and an expected high V-OC of 0.97 V. The weaker - stacking induced by steric hindrance affords ITC6-IC with enhanced compatibility with polymer donors. The blend film treated with suitable thermal annealing exhibits a fibril crystallization feature with a good bicontinuous network morphology. The results indicate that the molecular design approach of ITC6-IC can be inspirational for future development of nonfullerene acceptors for high efficiency OSCs.
An Unfused‐Core‐Based Nonfullerene Acceptor Enables High‐Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Excellent Morphological Stability at High Temperatures

Abstract:Most nonfullerene acceptors developed so far for high‐performance organic solar cells (OSCs) are designed in planar molecular geometry containing a fused‐ring core. In this work, a new nonfullerene acceptor of DF‐PCIC is synthesized with an unfused‐ring core containing two cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) moieties and one 2,5‐difluorobenzene (DFB) group. A nearly planar geometry is realized through the F···H noncovalent interaction between CPDT and DFB for DF‐PCIC. After proper optimizations, the OSCs with DF‐PCIC as the acceptor and the polymer PBDB‐T as the donor yield the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.14% with a high fill factor of 0.72. To the best of our knowledge, this efficiency is among the highest values for the OSCs with nonfullerene acceptors owning unfused‐ring cores. Furthermore, no obvious morphological changes are observed for the thermally treated PBDB‐T:DF‐PCIC blended films, and the relevant devices can keep ≈70% of the original PCEs upon thermal treatment at 180 °C for 12 h. This tolerance of such a high temperature for so long time is rarely reported for fullerene‐free OSCs, which might be due to the unique unfused‐ring core of DF‐PCIC. Therefore, the work provides new idea for the design of new nonfullerene acceptors applicable in commercial OSCs in the future.
Simple Non-Fused Electron Acceptors for Efficient and Stable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:The flexibility in structural design of organic semiconductors endows organic solar cells (OSCs) not only great function-tunabilities, but also high potential toward practical application. In this work, simple non-fused-ring electron acceptors are developed through two-step synthesis from single aromatic units for constructing efficient OSCs. With the assistance of non-covalent interactions, these rotatable non-fused acceptors (in solution) allow transiting into planar and stackable conformation in condensed solid, promoting acceptors not only feasible solution-processability, but also excellent film characteristics. As results, decent power conversion efficiencies of 10.27% and 13.97% can be achieved in single and tandem OSCs consisting of simple solution-cast blends, in which the fully unfused acceptors exhibit exceptionally low synthetic complexity index. In addition, the unfused acceptor and its based OSCs exhibit promising stabilities under continuous illumination. Overall, this work reveals valuable insights on the structural design of simple and effective electron acceptors with great practical perspectives.
Enhancing the Performance of Polymer Solar Cells via Core Engineering of NIR-Absorbing Electron Acceptors.

Abstract:In order to utilize the near-infrared (NIR) solar photons like silicon-based solar cells, extensive research efforts have been devoted to the development of organic donor and acceptor materials with strong NIR absorption. However, single-junction organic solar cells (OSCs) with photoresponse extending into >1000 nm and power conversion efficiency (PCE) >11% have rarely been reported. Herein, three fused-ring electron acceptors with varying core size are reported. These three molecules exhibit strong absorption from 600 to 1000 nm and high electron mobility (>1 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)). It is proposed that core engineering is a promising approach to elevate energy levels, enhance absorption and electron mobility, and finally achieve high device performance. This approach can maximize both short-circuit current density ( J(SC)) and open-circuit voltage (V-OC) at the same time, differing from the commonly used end group engineering that is generally unable to realize simultaneous enhancement in both V-OC and J(SC). Finally, the single-junction OSCs based on these acceptors in combination with the widely polymer donor PTB7-Th yield J(SC) as high as 26.00 mA cm(-2) and PCE as high as 12.3%.
Regulating the Crystallinity and Self-Aggregation of Fused Ring Electron Acceptors via Branched Side-Chain Engineering for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Fine-tuning the crystallinity and self-aggregation features of donors/acceptor materials toward high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs) is of crucial importance. Here, a convenient yet effective way to simultaneously control the crystallinity and self-aggregation of the fused ring electron acceptor (FREA) is demonstrated by altering the length of the first-position branched alkyl chain on the cyclic unit. Specifically, three carbazole-based FREAs, 4TC-4F-C6C6, 4TC-4F-C8C8, and 4TC-4F-C10C10, are synthesized by changing the length of the first-position branched alkyl chain on the carbazole unit. The crystallinity of the studied acceptors decreases as the branched alkyl chain is lengthened. The ability of the acceptors to undergo self-aggregation decreases in the order 4TC-4F-C10C10, 4TC-4F-C6C6, and 4TC-4F-C8C8. The medium crystallinity and lower self-aggregation properties of 4TC-4F-C8C8 result in favorable phase separation when blended with poly-[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl-3-fluoro)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1',2'-c:4',5'-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PM6), which is conducive to effective exciton dissociation and charge transport. Consequently, the OSC device based on PM6:4TC-4F-C8C8 delivers the best power conversion efficiency of 14.85%.

Abstract:For the advancement in fields of organic and perovskite solar cells, various techniques of structural alterations are being employed on previously reported chromophores. In this study, the end-capped engineering is carried out on DBT-4F (R) by modifying terminal acceptors to improve optoelectronic and photovoltaic attributes. Seven molecules (AD1-AD7) are modeled using different push–pull acceptors. DFT/B3LYP/6-31G along with its time-dependent approach (TD-DFT) are on a payroll to investigate ground state geometries, absorption maxima (λ max ), energy gap (E g ), excitation energy (E x ), internal reorganization energy, light harvesting efficiency (LHE), dielectric constant, open circuit voltage ( V OC ), fill factor (FF), etc. of OSCs. AD1 displayed the lowest band gap (1.76 eV), highest λ max (876 nm), lowest E x (1.41 eV), and lowest binding energy (0.21 eV). Among various calculated parameters, all of the sketched molecules demonstrated greater dielectric constant when compared to R. The highest dielectric constant was exhibited by AD3 (56.26). AD5 exhibited maximum LHE (0.9980). Lower reorganization energies demonstrated improved charge mobility. AD5 and AD7 (1.63 and 1.68 eV) have higher values of V OC than R (1.51 eV). All novel molecules having outperforming attributes will be better candidates to enhance the efficacy of OSCs for future use.

Abstract:The rational molecular design and structural modification of quasi-two-dimensional fused perylene diimide (quasi-2D FPDI) acceptors have received growing attention for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells (NF-OSCs). Herein, we designed and synthesized two pairs of FPDI acceptors, one in the form of FPDI-pi-bridge-FPDI with the pi-bridge being either an axisymmetric thiophene (T) or a centrosymmetric thienothiophene (TT) unit, and the other being the corresponding ring-fusion counterpart. Four small molecule acceptors, namely T-FPDI, TT-FPDI, FT-FPDI and FTT-FPDI, were paired with a common PTB7-Th polymeric electron donor as active materials for a comparative study of the effects of linkers and ring fusion on their photovoltaic performances. The T-FPDI-based NF-OSC exhibited a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.50%, while a higher PCE of 7.17% with a simultaneous enhancement in the open circuit voltage (V-oc), the short-circuit current density (J(sc)) and the fill factor (FF) was achieved for the TT-FPDI-based solar cells. The solar cells based on the ring-fused FT-FPDI and FTT-FPDI acceptors displayed PCEs of 6.75% and 7.66%, respectively, both higher than those of the corresponding non-fused counterparts. Notably, the trade-off between theJ(sc)andV(oc), commonly observed in fullerene OSCs, is alleviated in these systems. It is also worth noting that the NF-OSCs based on these FPDI acceptors do not need any solvent additives. This successful molecular engineering based on novel quasi-2D FPDI building blocks may inspire the development of emergent electron acceptors for high performance additive-free NF-OSCs.

Abstract:Recently, we developed fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) as a class of high-performance nonfullerene acceptors, which have been widely used in organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, we explore new functions of FREAs in addition to being an acceptor in a photoactive layer, and use them as an interfacial layer, which significantly improves the performance of OSCs. Compared with the conventional cathode modifying layers (CMLs) of ZnO and ZnO/polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE), a novel CML of ZnO/FREA/PEIE enhances the optical mode and absorption of the device and suppresses geminate recombination via charge separation, both of which increase the short-circuit current density. In addition, FREAs passivate the surface defects of ZnO and then facilitate electron transport. The OSCs based on ZnO/FREA/PEIE exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 13.04%, higher than those based on ZnO and ZnO/PEIE (12.15% and 12.12%).

Abstract:Nowadays, organic solar cells (OSCs) with efficiencies over 10% have been achieved through the elaborate design of electron donors and fullerene acceptors. However, the drawbacks of fullerene acceptors, like poor absorption, limited chemical and energetic tunabilities, high-cost purification and morphological instability, have become the bottlenecks for the further improvement of OSCs. To overcome the mentioned shortages from fullerene, research studies on non-fullerene electron acceptors have boomed. To date, the highest efficiency of fullerene-free OSCs has been pushed to be 12%, which surpasses that of fullerene-based OSCs. In this perspective, we focus on summarizing the development of small molecule electron acceptors designed to replace the fullerene derivatives. Since it has been revealed that the search for matched donor: acceptor pairs is important for accomplishing high efficiencies, we therefore divide electron acceptors into several categories according to the donors used in fullerene-free OSCs. After the introduction of these acceptors, we outline the designing rules as well as perspectives for the development of non-fullerene acceptors. We believe that the development of non-fullerene electron acceptors will make organic photovoltaics closer to practical applications.

Abstract:A series of fused-ring electron acceptors with indacenodithiophene as core, 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1 -ylidene) malononitrile as end groups, thiophene with different side chains as pi bridge are designed, synthesized and applied in non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs). The effects of alkyl side chains on absorption, energy level, molecular packing, domain size, domain purity, charge transport and photovoltaic performance are systematically investigated. Via the steric hindrance effect, increase in carbon number of side chains slightly downshifts HOMO energy levels, upshifts LUMO energy levels and thereby increases open circuit voltage from 0.84 to 0.95 V gradually. Short circuit current, fill factor and efficiency vary non-monotonically with aliphatic carbon number of alkyl chains and reach maximum value simultaneously when carbon number is six. Hybrid Nonfused-Ring Electron Acceptors with Fullerene Pendant for High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:The rapid advance of fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) has made them a potential substitute to fullerene-based acceptors and offered new avenues for the construction of organic solar cells (OSCs). Nonfused-ring acceptors (NFRAs) could significantly reduce the synthetic cost while achieving reasonable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Widely used fullerene acceptors have been applied as a second acceptor to regulate the morphology, absorption, and electron transport. To take full advantage of both nonfullerene and fullerene acceptors at the same time, we rationally designed and synthesized two novel NFRAs with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the lateral pendent. With the incorporation of fullerene pendent in PCBM-C6 and PCBM-C10, varied UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) quenching behaviors were observed, and isotropic diffraction patterns were obtained via grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) measurements. The bulky, spherical, and electronic isotropic fullerene pendent could effectively suppress severe molecular aggregation and form the preferred blend morphology. This strategy significantly improved the efficiencies for exciton separation and charge collection relative to the control acceptor CH3COO-C6. Abstract:Three novel non-fullerene small molecular acceptors ITOIC, ITOIC-F, and ITOIC-2F were designed and synthesized with easy chemistry. The concept of supra-molecular chemistry was successfully used in the molecular design, which includes noncovalently conformational locking (via intrasupramolecular interaction) to enhance the planarity of backbone and electrostatic interaction (intersupramolecular interaction) to enhance the pi-pi stacking of terminal groups. Fluorination can further strengthen the intersupramolecular electrostatic interaction of terminal groups. As expected, the designed acceptors exhibited excellent device performance when blended with polymer donor PBDB-T. In comparison with the parent acceptor molecule DC-IDT2T reported in the literature with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.93%, ITOIC with a planar structure exhibited a PCE of 8.87% and ITOIC-2F with a planar structure and enhanced electrostatic interaction showed a quite impressive PCE of 12.17%. Our result demonstrates the importance of comprehensive design in the development of high-performance non-fullerene small molecular acceptors.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have experienced rapid development and achieved significant breakthroughs in power conversion efficiencies owing to the emergence of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with ladder-type multiple fused ring structures. However, the high synthetic complexity and production cost of multiple fused ring NFAs hinder the commercial prospects of OSCs. In this context, the development of non-fused ring acceptors (NFRAs) with simple structures and facile synthesis has been proposed. In this mini review, we summarize the important progress in this field spanning from molecular design strategies to structure-performance relationships. Ultimately, with the aim of realizing the practical application of NFRAs in OSCs, we discuss the current challenges and future directions in terms of achieving high performance and low synthetic complexity simultaneously. These discussions provide valuable insights into the development of new NFRAs.
A Fully Non‐fused Ring Acceptor with Planar Backbone and Near‐IR Absorption for High Performance Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Fused-ring electron acceptors have made significant progress in recent years, while the development of fully non-fused ring acceptors has been unsatisfactory. Here, two fully non-fused ring acceptors, o-4TBC-2F and m-4TBC-2F, were designed and synthesized. By regulating the location of the hexyloxy chains, o-4TBC-2F formed planar backbones, while m-4TBC-2F displayed a twisted backbone. Additionally, the o-4TBC-2F film showed a markedly red-shifted absorption after thermal annealing, which indicated the formation of J-aggregates. For fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs), PBDB-T was used as a donor and blended with the two acceptors. The o-4TBC-2F-based blend films displayed higher charge mobilities, lower energy loss and a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE). The optimized devices based on o-4TBC-2F gave a PCE of 10.26 %, which was much higher than those based on m-4TBC-2F at 2.63 %, and it is one of the highest reported PCE values for fully non-fused ring electron acceptors.
