Abstract:Higher fullerenes in ODCB extract of primary soots by arc-heating method were concentrated by selective complexation between t-butyl calixene[8] and C60. Better seperation and UV-Vis spectra of higher fullerenes C70, C76, C78, C84 and C86 were achieved using Waters 2010-HPLC. We found that the ratio of C78 isomers extracted by ODCB is different from that of extracts by other solvents such as toluene and CS2. In the process of HPLC seperation, we found that the logarithm of retention time ln(tR) has a linear relationship with the number of fullerene carbons (Carbon Number Rule of Fullerenes), we also found that the spectra of fullerenes have a tendency of red-shift associated with the reduction of the symmestry of fullerenes. The existence and seperation of C86 were discussed by analysizing the LD-TOFMS, UV-Vis, HPLC and Carbon Number Rule of Fullerenes.
New High Performance Liquid Chromatographic Stationary Phase for the Separation of C60 and C70

Abstract:New high performance liquid chromatographic stationary phases, Polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) resins modified by the compounds viith electron-donating groups were prepared for the separation of C-60 and C-70. Strong interaction forces resulted from pi-pi charge transfer interactions between the fullerenes and the stationary phases made it possible to use strong solvent, such as o-xylene, as mobile phase in which fullerene has high solubility. Among the stationary phases studied, the PS-DVB resin modified by alpha-methylnaphthalene is the best in the separation of C-60 and C-70. Its column loading capacity is about 15 times higher than that of Ultrastyragel column. The separation factor of C-60 and C-70 is also high. Irreversible adsorption of fullerenes on the column was not observed obviously.

Abstract:One of the main challenges in environmental risk assessment of fullerenes is to develop analytical methods that detect and quantify fullerenes at low concentrations. In this paper we report on the development and optimization of a highly specific, robust, and relatively simple method for the quantitative determination of C60, C70, and six functionalized fullerenes, namely, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid butyl ester, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid octyl ester, [6,6]-bis(phenyl)-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, [6,6]-thienyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester ([70PCBM], in different aqueous matrixes. For this method fullerenes were extracted from the aqueous phase using solid-phase extraction (SPE), with subsequent analysis on a liquid chromatography-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (LC-Orbitrap MS) system. SPE was optimized by varying different conditions to improve recovery of all fullerenes. Different SPE column materials (C18, C18e, C8, CN) were tested, and recoveries appeared to be the highest for the C18-material. Recoveries were improved by adding NaCl to the water during extraction. Very low limit of detection (LOD) values were obtained for all compounds with this method, ranging from 0.17 ng/L for [70]PCBM to 0.28 ng/L for C60, and subsequent limit of quantitation (LOQ) values of 0.57-0.91 ng/L. Recoveries for the fullerenes were on average 120% in ultrapure and drinking water. Recoveries appeared to be lower, but still acceptable (e.g., >78%), in surface water. The developed approach is promising and will be applied, for example, in (1) environmental monitoring, (2) a more in-depth study of environmental fate and transformation products, and (3) studying water treatment efficiency of C60, C70, and the various functionalized fullerenes.

Abstract:A simple and inexpensive method for the purification of gram quantities of >99.5% pure C60 and > 98% pure C70 by a fractional crystallization process in carbon disulfide or o-xylene is described. This process is based on the finding that C60 was enriched in the solid deposit, whereas C70 was enriched in the mother liquor during crystallization of fullerenes due to differential solubilities of these two fullerenes, C60 and C70, in these solvents.

Abstract:Ab initio optimizations at HF/6-31G* level and subsequent electrostatic potential calculations have been performed for a group of 121 solvent molecules. High-level correlation of solubilities of fullerence(C-60) in organic solvents with the theoretical descriptors of solvents have been obtained. The results also demonstrate that the solubilities of fullerence(C-60) can be predicted better with the selective parameters, and the results obtained by neural network are superior to that by multiple regression.

Abstract:We have synthesized C60 in gram quantities using the Kratschmer and Huffman technique. The arc vaporization of a graphite rod was performed at 100 Torr in a static helium atmosphere. The yield by toluene extraction is 7% of the soot produced. C60 in the toluene extract was identified by mass, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. The result of analytical HPLC showed the content of C70 to be 13% in the toluene extract and 9% in the samples sublimated at 400-degrees-C. X-ray and electron diffraction studies show that C60 molecules form fcc or hcp crystals, depending on the substrate and sublimation conditions. A new phase with tetragonal symmetry has been found in the sublimated sample, presumably formed by C70 or larger C fullerenes.

Abstract:The polymerization of three typical aromatic solvent-doped fullerene materials with similar hexagonal closest packed (hcp) structures (mesitylene/C-60, m-dichlorobenzene/C-60 and m-xylene/C-60 solvates) is studied under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT, 1.5 GPa, 573 K and 2 GPa, 700 K, respectively). Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies reveal that the intercalated aromatic solvents play a crucial role in tailoring the extent of polymerization of C-60 molecules. In the solvates, the solvents confine formation of covalent bonds between C-60 molecules to the 001 direction and the (001) plane of the hcp lattices, leading to the formation of mixed polymeric phases of monomers, dimers, one-dimensional (1D) chainlike oligomers, and two-dimensional (2D) tetragonal phase polymers under suitable HPHT conditions. The type and number of substituent groups of the aromatic solvents are found to have significant influence, determining the amounts and types of polymeric phases formed. Our studies enrich the understanding of the formation mechanisms for controllably fabricating polymeric fullerenes and facilitate targeted design and synthesis of unique fullerene-based carbon materials.
Ultrathin Two‐Dimensional Porous Fullerene Membranes for Ultimate Organic Solvent Separation

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with high chemical stability have attracted intensive interest in membrane design for the separation of organic solvents. As a novel 2D material, polymeric fullerenes (C60)∞ with distinctive properties are very promising for the development of innovative membranes. In this work, we report the construction of a 2D (C60)∞ nanosheet membrane for organic solvent separation. The pathways of the (C60)∞ nanosheet membrane are constructed by sub-1-nm lateral channels and nanoscale in-plane pores created by the depolymerization of the (C60)∞ nanosheets. Attributing to ordered and shortened transport pathways, the ultrathin porous (C60)∞ membrane is superior in organic solvent separation. The hexane, acetone, and methanol fluxes are up to 1146.3±53, 900.4±41, and 879.5±42 kg·m-2·h-1, respectively, which are up to 130 times higher than those of the state-of-the-art membranes with similar dye rejection. Our findings demonstrate the prospect of 2D (C60)∞ as a promising nanofiltration membrane in the separation of organic solvents from macromolecular compounds such as dyes, drugs, hormones, etc.

Abstract:Highly fluorinated fullerenes with a chemical composition of C60F48 have been prepared and characterized. Their solubility of the new nanomaterials in the ionic liquid (IL) has been compared with raw fullerenes C60. Fluorination may appear as a convenient method to enhance the solubility of carbonaceous nanomaterials in a fluorinated based anion IL. Indeed, the ability of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BmIm][NTf2]), to solubilize C60 and C60F48 was investigated using optical microscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy. While C60 has very poor solubility in this IL (below 0.07 mmol/L), the solubility increases at least eightfold, i.e. more than 1.0 mg/mL (or 0.61 mmol/L) for C60F48 samples. The presence of fluorine atoms on fullerene seems to enhance the stability of the solvated molecules in IL thanks to the limitation of the aggregation of C60F48 in [BmIm][NTf2]. This improvement of the solubility could be explained by the beneficial effect of the fluorination that induces a decrease of the π-π interaction between carbonaceous solutes as the carbon hybridization changes from sp2 to sp3 through the formation of C-F covalent bonds and thus enhances the interaction between the solvent and the solute. Fluorination appears as an efficient approach to limit the use of volatile organic compounds usually used as co-solvent to enhance the dispersion mechanism.
Spectroscopic studies of the interaction of C60 and C70 films with metal substrates

Abstract:The interaction of fullerenes C60 and C70 films with metal substrates Au, Ag, In and Sn has been studied by UV-visible absorption spectra, IR, Raman, photoluminescence and second-order nonlinear optics. The absorption spectra show new bands for films on Au, Ag, In and Sn film substrates. For C60 on Au and Ag, new bands appear, peaking at 723 and 566 nm, respectively. For C60 film on Sn, several new bands are found at 975.4, 1218, 1557, 2000 and 3570 nm in the NIR and IR regions. Raman spectra reveal an additional peak at 350 cm−1 for C60 film on Au and five new peaks at 350, 532, 564, 1692 and 1850 cm−1 for the film on Sn. An enhancement of the Raman peak intensity is observed in the latter case. A peak blue shift of photoluminescence band from 749 to 735 nm for C60 on Sn has also been found. Moreover, a second-order nonlinear optics study at 1.06,μm yields a ten times greater secondary harmonic generation signal intensity for C60 films on Ag than that of Ag, while no signal is observed for C60 film on glass. For C70 on Sn, UV absorption bands broaden and new bands are found at 747, 984 and 1738 nm. The above results suggest a structural distortion of C60 and C70 molecules, induced by charge transfer from these metals to the molecules.
New approach for sensitive photothermal detection of C60 and C70 fullerenes on micro-thin-layer chromatographic plates

Abstract:In this paper the pulse thermovision (photothermal) detection and quantification methods of C60 and C70 fullerenes are presented. Quantification results are compared with optical and fluorescence measurements. Target components were separated under isothermal conditions (30 °C) on micro-TLC plates (RP18WF254S) using n-hexane as the mobile phase. The principle of described analytical protocol is based on sensitive measurement of the temperature contrast generated within TLC stationary phase and fullerenes spots after white light pulse excitation. It has been demonstrated that observed temperature contrast is mainly driven by the optical properties of fullerenes (UV-vis absorption spectra). Contrary to the commonly applied optical reflection or transmission techniques the proposed thermovision method involves dissipated light. The results of presented experimental work have revealed that both types of quantitative measurements provide similar outcome despite the key differences in the signal origin. However, it has been found that thermovision method was characterized by smaller value of LOD, particularly for C60 molecule. We demonstrated that application of correlation technique to post-acquisition analysis of the sequence of temperature contrast images significantly increase detection limits of fullerenes, even in comparison to fluorescence quenching detection mode. Moreover, the thermal contrast images and particularly, computed correlation image, allow detection of stationary phase layer nonuniformities, including changes in the adsorbent thickness and thermal conductivity. Therefore, invented pulsed thermovision methodology can be additionally used for fast quality screening of home made and commercially available TLC plates.
Highly soluble C2v-symmetrical fullerene derivatives: efficient synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical study

Abstract:Through an efficient octa-substitution reaction, octabromofullerene (C60Br8) was reacted with alcohols or anisole in the presence of silver triflate to produce octaalkoxy and octaaryl fullerenes, respectively, in up to 79% yield with retention of C2v-symmetry. The LUMO level could be widely tuned through the cumulative substituent effects of the eight addends. The difference in LUMO energy level between C60(OCH2CCl3)8 and C60(C6H4-OMe-4)8 was 0.53 eV, representing low-LUMO and high-LUMO fullerenes. Dynamic light scattering measurements revealed that these octa-substituted compounds were dispersed as single molecules both in toluene and in dichloromethane under low-concentration condition. This lack of aggregate formation is attributed to the polar and non-polar hemispheres of these molecules.
Dynamic Solvation Shell and Solubility of C-60 in Organic Solvents

Abstract:The notion of (static) solvation shells has recently proved fruitful in revealing key molecular factors that dictate the solubility and aggregation properties of fullerene species in polar or ionic solvent media. Using molecular dynamics schemes with carefully evaluated force fields, we have scrutinized both the static and the dynamic features of the solvation shells of single C-60 particle for three nonpolar organic solvents (i.e., chloroform, toluene, and chlorobenzene) and a range of system temperatures (i.e., T = 250-330 K). The central findings have been that, while the static structures of the solvation shell remain, in general, insensitive to the effects of changing solvent type or system temperature, the dynamic behavior of solvent molecules within the shell exhibits prominent dependence on both factors. Detailed analyses led us to propose the notion of dynamically stable solvation shell, effectiveness of which can be characterized by a new physical parameter defined as the ratio of two fundamental time constants representing, respectively, the solvent relaxation (or residence) time within the first solvation shell and the characteristic time required for the fullerene particle to diffuse a distance comparable to the shell thickness. We show that, for the five (two from the literature) different solvent media and the range of system temperatures examined herein, this parameter bears a value around unity and, in particular, correlates intimately with known trends of solubility for C-60 solutions. We also provide evidence revealing that, in addition to fullerene solvent interactions, solvent solvent interactions play an important role, too, in shaping the dynamic solvation shell, as implied by recent experimental trends.

Abstract:Fullerene-extracted soots which are the by-product of producing fullerenes (C-60/C-70) can adsorb organic vapors efficiently, Breakthrough volumes (maximum sample volumes, V-max) and specific retention volumes(20 degrees C) of 17 VOCs(volatile organic compounds)are measured. The recoveries of adsorption/ thermal desorption of Fullerene-extracted soots adsorbent tubes ranged from 40.8% to 117%, most of which are (100 +/- 20)%. Fullerene-extracred soots is cheap and can be used in environmental analysis for trapping and enriching Graces of VOCs in ambient air.
