Abstract:Temperature dependence of C-60 solubility in four organic solvents above room temperature is investigated. It is found that the solubility of C-60 in cyclohexane increases with temperature increase, in contrast with those in hexane, toluene and xylene which decrease when temperature rises.

Abstract:The solubilities of C-60 and C-70 in toluene, o-xylene and CS2 between melting point and boiling point have been measured. The temperature dependent solubility of C-60 displays the anomalous behavior. A solubility maximum of C-60 around O degrees C for toluene and CS2, and around 30 degrees C for o-xylene was observed. The temperature dependent solubility of C-70 displays the normal behavior in the same solvents.

Abstract:SOLUBILITIES of solids in liquids exhibit a temperature dependence that is correlated with the energetics of dissolution. For organic solutes in organic solvents the common experience is that solubility increases on warming (that is, dissolution is normally endothermic), forming the basis for purification by crystallization by slow cooling of hot solutions1. Interactions between inorganic compounds and water are often more energetic, and may lead to complicated temperature-dependent solubilities, often associated with the formation of hydrated solid phases2. We have investigated the temperature-dependent solubility of C60 in hexane, toluene and CS2. We observe a solubility maximum near room temperature (around 280 K) for all three solvents. Although the solubility of C60 in these three solvents differs by several orders of magnitude, the temperature dependence of the relative solubilities is much the same in each case. We conclude that dissolution is endothermic below room temperature and exothermic above. We interpret this change as being due to a phase change in solid C60 presumably the phase change observed previously in the absence of a solvent3–5, modified by solvent wetting. A solubility maximum (or minimum) for organic compounds in non-electrolytes is highly unusual, and may be unprecedented. The effect may have consequences for solvent-extraction techniques of fullerene purification.

Abstract:The solubilities of 1-fluoro-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzene in five pure organic solvents (ethanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, toluene, and chloroform) at temperatures ranging from (288.40 to 331.50) K under atmospheric pressure were measured experimentally by the dynamic method with a laser monitoring apparatus. It was found that the solubilities in different solvents decreased in the order chloroform > acetone > ethyl acetate > toluene > ethanol. The experimental data were well-correlated using the modified Apelblat equation, with average relative deviations of less than 2.92 % and root-mean-square deviations of no more than 0.30 %.

Abstract:The solubilities of cholesterol and desmosterol in binary solvent mixtures of n-hexane + ethanol at temperatures of 293.2-323.2 K were determined by a static equilibrium method. The solubilities increase with temperature and go through a maximum at a specific solvent composition. The fusion enthalpy Delta H-fus and the melting point T-m determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), are 28.5 kJ/mol, 421.7 K for cholesterol and 15.9 kJ/mol, 388.2 K for desmosterol, respectively. The solubilities of cholesterol and desmosterol in pure n-hexane or ethanol follow a linear Van't Hoff relation with temperature. Activity models, such as Wilson, NRTL and UNIQUAC models were used to correlate and predict the solubilities of cholesterol and desmosterol in n-hexane + ethanol mixed solvents. Abstract:The solubility data of 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyl disulfide in solvents (ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, methylbenzene, chloroform, acetone) were measured between (303.15 and 333.15) K under atmospheric pressure using synthetic method and laser monitoring technique. The experimental data was correlated with the Apelblat equation and measured up to experimental data. For six solvents studied, the average relative errors σ are all less than 2.6 %, and the root-mean-square deviations are all less than 0.45 %.

Abstract:The solubility data of benzyl disulfide were measured using the synthetic method and laser monitoring technique under atmospheric pressure in five solvents (ethanol, n-hexane, ethyl acetate, toluene, and chloroform), with the temperature ranging from (283.45 to 333.15) K. The experimental data in each solvent were fitted by the modified Apelblat equation with good agreement. For all of the experimental solubility data in five solvents, the root-mean-square was less than 0.52 %, whereas the average absolute relative error was less than 2.0 %.

Abstract:The solubilities of desmosterol in methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile were measured. The solubilities of desmosterol in these solvents increased with temperature and varied greatly with the solvent from a minimum of 0.1151 mol.L-1 in acetonitrile at 300.8 K to a maximum of 1.102 mol.L-1 in ethyl acetate at 332.8 K. The solubility values were correlated with the modified Apelblat equation. The calculated solubilities for all solvents showed good agreement with the experimental data in the temperature range studied.

Abstract:Enthalpies of dissolution of C60and C70ino-xylene, toluene, and CS2have been measured by a Calvet MS-80 microcalorimeter at temperatures from 293.15 K to 313.15 K. It was observed that the dissolution of C60in the three organic solvents in the above range of temperatures was exothermic, while the dissolution of C70in the same three solvents was endothermic. The enthalpy of dissolution of C70showed a minimum at 308.15 K. The experimental results were discussed.

Abstract:The reaction of C60 with ozone in benzen results in the formation of C60 oxides. Two isomers of C60O were formed at 10��C, isolated and the UV-vis spectra of both isomers were obtained. The UV-vis spectrum of C60O(I) is same as C60O (C2v) and that of C60O(II) is in similar to theoretical one of C60O (Cs).

Abstract:The notion of (static) solvation shells has recently proved fruitful in revealing key molecular factors that dictate the solubility and aggregation properties of fullerene species in polar or ionic solvent media. Using molecular dynamics schemes with carefully evaluated force fields, we have scrutinized both the static and the dynamic features of the solvation shells of single C-60 particle for three nonpolar organic solvents (i.e., chloroform, toluene, and chlorobenzene) and a range of system temperatures (i.e., T = 250-330 K). The central findings have been that, while the static structures of the solvation shell remain, in general, insensitive to the effects of changing solvent type or system temperature, the dynamic behavior of solvent molecules within the shell exhibits prominent dependence on both factors. Detailed analyses led us to propose the notion of dynamically stable solvation shell, effectiveness of which can be characterized by a new physical parameter defined as the ratio of two fundamental time constants representing, respectively, the solvent relaxation (or residence) time within the first solvation shell and the characteristic time required for the fullerene particle to diffuse a distance comparable to the shell thickness. We show that, for the five (two from the literature) different solvent media and the range of system temperatures examined herein, this parameter bears a value around unity and, in particular, correlates intimately with known trends of solubility for C-60 solutions. We also provide evidence revealing that, in addition to fullerene solvent interactions, solvent solvent interactions play an important role, too, in shaping the dynamic solvation shell, as implied by recent experimental trends.

Abstract:The solubilities of beta,beta-carotene-4,4'-dione (canthaxanthin) in methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, toluene, cyclohexane, 1,2-dichloroethane, and trichloromethane were measured by a synthetic method over the temperature range from (293.15 to 343.15) K at atmospheric pressure. Abstract:Higher fullerenes in ODCB extract of primary soots by arc-heating method were concentrated by selective complexation between t-butyl calixene[8] and C60. Better seperation and UV-Vis spectra of higher fullerenes C70, C76, C78, C84 and C86 were achieved using Waters 2010-HPLC. We found that the ratio of C78 isomers extracted by ODCB is different from that of extracts by other solvents such as toluene and CS2. In the process of HPLC seperation, we found that the logarithm of retention time ln(tR) has a linear relationship with the number of fullerene carbons (Carbon Number Rule of Fullerenes), we also found that the spectra of fullerenes have a tendency of red-shift associated with the reduction of the symmestry of fullerenes. The existence and seperation of C86 were discussed by analysizing the LD-TOFMS, UV-Vis, HPLC and Carbon Number Rule of Fullerenes.

Abstract:Standard changes of enthalpy (Delta H degrees) and entropy (Delta S degrees) of dissolving process from gas phase into supported film of DB18C6 have been determined for some organic solutes using gas - liquid chromatographic technique (GLCT). To almost every solute, entropy effect (-T Delta S degrees) is larger than calorific effect (-Delta H degrees) under the present experimental conditions. The data of calorific effects have been discussed in the light of intermolecular forces, which indicate that different solute molecules may approach to and interact with different local parts of the crown ether molecule.

Abstract:Ab initio optimizations at HF/6-31G* level and subsequent electrostatic potential calculations have been performed for a group of 121 solvent molecules. High-level correlation of solubilities of fullerence(C-60) in organic solvents with the theoretical descriptors of solvents have been obtained. The results also demonstrate that the solubilities of fullerence(C-60) can be predicted better with the selective parameters, and the results obtained by neural network are superior to that by multiple regression.

Abstract:The solubility of cyclododecanone (CDON) was determined in twelve solvents containing acetonitrile, acetone, toluene, ethyl acetate, cyclohexane, 1,2-dichloroethane, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, i-propanol, n-butanol and i-butanol. The temperature range for the remaining solvents used in the experiment was 278.15–313.15 K, except for cyclohexane (283.15–313.15 K). The CDON solubility in solvents measured increased with growing temperature. The CDON solubility varies considerably in different solvents. Among the single solvents selected, CDON was most soluble in 1,2-dichloroethane and least in acetonitrile. The solubility in 1,2-dichloroethane is about 2–3 times higher than in acetonitrile. The carbonyl oxygen of CDON readily combines with alcoholic solvents to form hydrogen bonds. Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) and the physiochemical properties of the solvents explain the solvent effect in diverse solvents. To understand CDON dissolution, the electrostatic potential energy surfaces of CDON and the solute–solvent interactions were analyzed at the molecular level on the basis of density functional theory (DFT). Analysis of solvation effects revealed that variations in the CDON dissolution are influenced by a combination of factors rather than a single one. In addition, the Van't Hoff equation, modified Apelblat equation, Yaws equation, λh equation, Wilson model and Jouyban model were utilized to correlate the experimentally obtained value. The computational data show that the ARD (0.88%) and RMSD (0.24%) of Wilson model are the smallest among the selected equations with the best correlation. The apparent thermodynamic properties of CDON dissolution were further accounted for Van't Hoff equation, and the CDON dissolution was observed to be endothermic and entropy-driven.

Abstract:The mesoscale aggregation properties of C-60 in two distinct aromatic solvents (toluene and chlorobenzene) and a practical range of concentrations (c = 1-2 and c = 1-5 mg mL(-1), respectively) were systematically explored by static/dynamic light scattering (SLS/DLS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) analyses. The central observations were as follows: (1) aggregate species of sizes in the range of several hundred nanometers have been independently revealed by SLS, DLS, and DDLS analyses for both solvent systems. (2) DDLS and cryo-TEM measurements further revealed that while C-60 clusters are notably anisotropic (rod-like) in chlorobenzene, they are basically isotropic (spherical) in toluene. (3) Detailed analyses of combined SLS and SAXS profiles suggested that varied, yet self-similar, solvent-induced aggregate units were responsible for the distinct (mesoscale) aggregation features noted above. (4) From a dynamic perspective, specially commissioned DLS measurements ubiquitously displayed two relaxation modes (fast and slow mode), with the second (slow) mode being q (wave vector) independent. While the fast mode in both solvent systems was basically diffusive by nature and leads to geometrical features in good agreement with the above static analyses, the slow mode was analyzed and tentatively suggested to reflect the effect of mutual confinement. (5) Micron-scale aggregate morphology of drop-cast thin films displays similar contrasting features for the two solvent media used. Overall, this study suggests that solvent-induced, nanoscale, aggregate units may be a promising factor to control a hierarchy of microscopic aggregation properties of C-60 solutions and thin films.
