Abstract:A composition gradient sputtering method was employed to deposit a series of (FexCo1-x)1-yHfy alloy films with different Fe/Co atomic ratios and Hf-doping. At Fe/Co = 70/30, the magnetically annealed (Fe0.7Co0.3)1-yHfy films with y = 0.087 – 0.124 showed a very high uniaxial anisotropy and an ultrahigh ferromagnetic resonance frequency over 7 GHz after the films were annealed at 350 °C, while at Fe/Co = 50/50, the as-deposited (Fe0.5Co0.5)1-yHfy films with y = 0.074 – 0.168 showed an excellent in-plane uniaxial anisotropy and high ferromagnetic resonance frequency over 3 GHz. These Fe-Co-Hf films deposited by the composition gradient sputtering method exhibited ahigh saturation magnetization of 1.8 – 2.2 T, a large uniaxial anisotropy field of 200 – 500 Oe, and a high ferromagnetic resonance frequency over 7 GHz, which provides great opportunities for integrated magnetic devices.

Abstract:The intermetallic compounds Hf1−XTaXFe2 show a first-order magnetic transition (FOMT) from a ferromagnetic (F) to an antiferromagnetic (AF) state with increasing temperature. The magnetization decreases abruptly at the phase transition temperature. We report the magnetic entropy change of these compounds under low field and discuss the results.

Abstract:TaxHf1−xC can withstand extreme environments, but the challenges in their densification prevent them from being used for many applications. In this paper, a method to prepare dense homogeneous TaxHf1−xC solid solutions with a cubic structure is prosed. Moreover, mechanical properties of TaxHf1−xC are characterized, including the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio. The hardness and Debye temperature are estimated by using empirical equation. The properties related to the electronic structures of TaxHf1−xC (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1), including the density of states and Mulliken populations, are systematically calculated by using the first-principles method. From the calculation, we found that all TaxHf1−xC are thermodynamically stable at room temperature. Moreover, Ta0.5Hf0.5C has a higher Young's modulus and shear modulus comparing to Ta0.75Hf0.25C and Ta0.25Hf0.75C. Ta0.75Hf0.25C possesses the highest bulk modulus, suggesting that it has greater comprehensive mechanical properties than the others. In addition, the compositions of their chemical bonds are discussed according to their density of states, population analysis and Debye temperature. We found that the number of valence electrons of transition metals significantly affects their mechanical properties. Finally, the relation between the mechanical properties of TaxHf1−xC (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) and the chemical bonds are summarized.

Large Low Field Magnetocaloric Effect in First-Order Phase Transition Compound TlFe3Te3 with Low-Level Hysteresis.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is an environment-friendly, high-efficiency technology. It has been believed that a large MCE can be realized in the materials with a first-order magnetic transition (FOMT). Here, we found that TlFe3Te3 is a ferromagnetic metal with a first-order magnetic transition occurring at Curie temperature TC = 220 K. The maximum values of magnetic entropy change (Δ ) along the crystallographic c-axis, estimated from the magnetization data, reach to 5.9 J kg−1K−1 and 7.0 J kg−1 K−1 for the magnetic field changes, ΔH = 0–1 T and 0–2 T, respectively, which is significantly larger than that of MCE materials with a second-order magnetic transition (SOMT). Besides the large ΔSM, the low-level both thermal and field hysteresis make TlFe3Te3 compound an attractive candidate for magnetic refrigeration. Our findings should inspire the exploration of high performance new MCE materials.

Abstract:Magnetic transitions and the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the HfFe6Ge6-type Y1-xCexMn6Sn6 (x=0.1-0.3) compounds have been investigated in the temperature range of 5-385 K. Y0.9Ce0.1Mn6Sn6 and Y0.825Ce0.175Mn6Sn6 show antiferromagnetism and Y0.7Ce0.3Mn6Sn6 undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferrimagnetic (Fi) transition with increasing temperature. The metamagnetic transition from helical antiferromagnetism to ferrimagnetism can be also induced by an applied field for those compounds. The metamagnetic transition field decreases with increasing Ce content, such as from 25 kOe for x=0.1 to 11 kOe for x=0.3 at 5 K. The giant MR (GMR) effect for Y1-xCexMn6Sn6 (x=0.1-0.3) is observed with metamagnetic behaviour, such as -37% at 5 K under a field of 50 kOe for the compounds (x=0.175 and 0.3). It is found that the MR behaviour for Y0.7Ce0.3Mn6Sn6 in the Fi state follows the magnetic-field power law MR proportional to-H-q at a fixed temperature, and obeys the relationship MR=-[alpha+beta/(T+gamma)] under a fixed magnetic field.

Abstract:The effects of carbon concentration on the crystal structure, magnetic, and electrical/thermal transport properties of ZnCxFe3 (1.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5) have been investigated systematically. Both the Curie temperature and the saturated magnetization decrease firstly and then reach saturation with increasing x. The investigations of heat capacity and resistivity indicate that ZnC1.2Fe3 displays a strongly correlated Fermi liquid behavior considering its Kadowaki-Woods ratio (∼0.64 a0). Around the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition (∼358 K), a reversible room-temperature magnetocaloric effect is observed. The relative cooling power (RCP) is ∼164 J/kg (∼385 J/kg) with the magnetic field change ΔH = 20 kOe (45 kOe). Considering the considerable large RCP, inexpensive and innoxious raw materials, ZnC1.2Fe3 is suggested to be a promising candidate for room-temperature magnetic refrigeration. Furthermore, the studies of thermal transport properties indicate that ZnC1.2Fe3 can also be a potential thermoelectric material with the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT = α2T/ρk) reaching its maximum of 0.0112 around 170 K.

Abstract:Intercalation of transition metal dichalcogenides with magnetic elements has been the subject of increasing research interest, aiming to explore novel magnetic materials with anisotropy and spin-orbit coupling. In this paper, two magnetic samples with varying Fe content have been prepared using different growth conditions via the chemical vapor transport method. A comprehensive investigation of the magnetic properties of the materials has been conducted using the Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS, EvercoolII-9T, Quantum Design). The results reveal distinct features in the studied materials. Fe 0.12 TaSe 2 exhibits significant ferromagnetism with a Curie transition temperature of 50 K. However, its in-plane magnetism is weak and no significant hysteresis loop is observed below the Curie temperature. On the other hand, Fe 0.25 TaSe 2 exhibits antiferromagnetism without any hysteresis loop and has a Néel temperature up to 130 K. This finding is quite different from the intercalated iron in Fe x TaS 2 , where only an antiferromagnetic state occurs with x larger than 0.4. Our study thus provides updated insights into the magnetic properties of this new system and serves as a reference for future investigations of TaSe2 compounds with varying iron content.

Abstract:The effect of quenching temperature on phase structure and magnetocaloric properties of the Mn0.975Fe0.975P0.5Si0.5 alloys are systematically studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimetry, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The Mn0.975Fe0.975P0.5Si0.5 alloys quenched at 1323, 1073, 873, and 673 K are all crystallized in the hexagonal Fe2P-type phase and the phase fraction of the Fe2P phase increases with the decreases of quenching temperature. As the quenching temperature decreases from 1323 to 673 K, the crystal lattice of alloys expands and the atoms' occupation is more ordered, while the saturation magnetic moment increases from 3.71 to 4.10 mu(B) f.u.(-1) The values of thermal hysteresis increase linearly from 30 to 41 K when the quenching temperature is down to 673 K. This enhancement of the first-order magnetic transition (FOMT) yields the maximum value of magnetic entropy change at 5 T increasing by 36%. To obtain excellent comprehensive properties for (Mn,Fe)(2)(P,Si) alloys, the methods of doping B element in the Mn0.975Fe0.975P0.5Si0.5 alloy are employed to tune the magnetocaloric properties. The results provide insights and systematic understanding into the effect of quenching temperature on the magnetocaloric properties of (Mn,Fe)(2)(P,Si)-based alloys.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of AlFe2-xMnxB2 (x = 0-0.5) compounds were investigated. With increasing Mn content, the magnetic properties of these compounds evolve gradually and the lattice parameters change continuously: Curie temperature (T-c) decreases from 312 K (x = 0) to 220 K (x = 0.5) and a new phase transition from the ferromagnetic state (FM) to spin-glass state (SPG) appears upon cooling. The lattice shrinks in the ab plane while it expands in the c direction. The formation of re-entrant SPG around 50 K was studied via temperature dependent ac and dc magnetization as well as the initial magnetization curves in 5 K. The reason for this glass state is the triangular configuration of magnetic atoms and the antiferromagnetic interactions introduced by Mn substitutions. The Curie transition leads to a conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The Mn doping leads to a decrease in the MCE near room temperature, but there is a plane in entropy change (Delta S) for the x = 0.1 compound under low field which makes these compounds good candidates to produce composites used for magnetic refrigeration application in a wide temperature span.

Exploring the negative thermal expansion and magnetocaloric effect in Fe 2 (Hf,Ti) Laves phase materials

Abstract:The transition-metal based Laves phase materials represent an extended family of alloys with rich and fascinating physical properties. In this work, we have investigated the negative thermal expansion and magnetocaloric effect in arc-melted and melt-spun Fe 2 Hf 1- x Ti x ( x = 0.15, 0.27, 0.30, 0.33, 0.36, 0.40) alloys. For x = 0.30 - 0.40, two hexagonal phases with different compositions share the same P 6 3 /mmc lattice symmetry, but have slightly different lattice parameters. The saturation magnetization and Curie temperature both follow a decreasing trend with the average unit-cell volume. For Fe 2 Hf 0.6 Ti 0.4 melt spinning improves the saturation magnetization from 48.7 to 59.6 Am 2 /kg and the magnetic entropy change from 0.46 to 0.54 J/kgK at a magnetic field change of 2 T. These enhanced values are attributed to an improved homogeneity caused by a suppression of phase segregation during rapid solidification. We have utilized neutron powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy to illustrate the correlation between the magnetic order and the negative thermal expansion in single-phase Fe 2 Hf 0.85 Ti 0.15 . The magnetic moments of Fe align below 400 K in the a-b plane and a moment change for the Fe atoms is responsible for the large volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion of -25 × 10 -6 K -1 over a wide temperature range of 300 - 400 K.

Abstract:Hf4+ substituted M-type hexaferrites with composition of BaHfxFe12−xO19 (x = 0–0.08 in step of 0.02 ) were synthesized via a solid reaction method. Pure M phase was observed by XRD analysis excepted when x = 0.08, the second phase (HfO2) appeared when x = 0.08. With increase of the Hf4+ substitution contents, the average grain size decreased, the shape of grains became irregular gradually and some small particles appeared and spacing between grains increased. It could be explained by lattice distortion and the agglomeration of grains. In terms of magnetic properties, the saturation magnetization (Ms) decreased from 81.16 emu/g to 38.36 emu/g and the coercivity (Hc) increased from 666 Oe to 1220 Oe as x increased from 0.00 to 0.08, which might be attributed to occupancies of Hf4+ ions on 2b sublattice. This would result in a valence change of Fe3+ to Fe2+ at the 2a site. Moreover, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the samples maintained a high level and changed slightly, while the saturation magnetization of the samples decreased to a low level, which provided a choice for magnetic materials to meet higher frequency applications.
Landau Quantization and Lifshitz Transition‐Modulated High Magneto‐Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract:Significant enhancement on both magneto‐longitudinal and transverse power factors is observed in the topological semimetal HfTe5 under 1.4 T, a magnetic field readily achievable with a permanent magnet. The enhancement is attributed to two mechanisms: the distorted density of states caused by Landau levels, and the Lifshitz transition which tunes the Fermi level with temperature. One of the necessary conditions for achieving high thermoelectric (TE) performance is the large longitudinal (Sxx) and transverse thermopower (Syx), which are closely related to the Fermi level position and the energy‐dependent density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level. Herein, it is demonstrated that HfTe5 has both high‐mobility induced significant quantum oscillations with an ultra‐low quantum limit of 2.7 T, and a significant Lifshitz transition where the Fermi level shows strong temperature dependence. The Landau levels yielded by the magnetic field distort the DOS with many equally‐spaced delta functions and significantly enhance the Sxx and Syx. The drastically enhanced magneto‐longitudinal and transverse TE performance in HfTe5 is achieved under an ultra‐low magnetic field of 1.4 T, which can be easily realized by a permanent magnet. Moreover, the Lifshitz transition further modulates its TE and magneto‐TE performance. Ultimately, the peak values of magneto‐longitudinal and transverse power factors (PF) reach 64 μW cm−1 K−2 at 150 K and 0.9 T and 19 μW cm−1 K−2 at 80 K and 1.4 T, respectively, which are comparable to the best TE materials such as Bi2Te3. This work provides novel methods and significant guidance for the development of TE and magneto‐TE materials.

Abstract:The crystal structure and magnetic properties of NdFe12-xMox (x = 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3.0) compounds were synthesized and investigated. These compounds crystallized in ThMn12-type single phase, and the Curie temperature decreased with increasing Mo content. NdFe9.5Mo2.5 has a Curie temperature around room temperature, and a reversible magnetic entropy change was observed similar to 290K due to the second-order magnetic transition. The maximum value of -Delta S-M is 2.38 J kg(-1) K-1 at 290K for a magnetic field change of 50 kOe. The working temperature span is more than 150K and the relative cooling power reaches 357 J/kg, which makes the compound a promising candidate for magnetic refrigerator vicinal room temperature. Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of Laves-phase alloys Dy(Co1−xFex)2(x=0, 0.02,0.04,0.06,0.08) have been prepared by arc-melting method. No first order phase transition was observed for samples with x≠0. With the increase of Fe content, the Curie temperature increases greatly, while the calculated magnetic entropy change, ΔSM, shows an obvious decrease with a broader peak. The origin of the magnetocaloric effect in Dy(Co1−xFex)2 alloys has been discussed.

Abstract:Magnetic transitions and magnetoresistance of HfFe6Ge6-type Y1-xDyxMn6Sn6 (x = 0.2 and 0.3) have been investigated in the temperature range of 5-380 K. It was found that the strong exchange interaction between the Dy and Mn sublattices results in incomplete ferromagnetism at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, the metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic state to a ferrimagnetic state can be induced by a fairly small threshold field or by increasing temperature. The magnetic transition is accompanied by a large magnetoresistance effect of about -29% and -16% at 5 K for x = 0.2 and 0.3, respectively.
