Abstract:In this paper, an improved meshfree scheme based on radial basis functions (RBFs) is provided for solving the incompressible viscous Navier–Stokes equations and two enhancements are proposed to mitigate the typical numerical oscillations. The first one is the combination of the RBFs‐based finite difference (RBF‐FD) method with the semi‐Lagrangian RBFs (SLM‐RBF), with the former being used for the viscous diffusion term and pressure Poisson equation and the latter being used for the advection term. The second enhancement is a regularization term that constructs smooth constraints for RBFs interpolations instead of clipping operations. The capability of the proposed scheme in mitigating numerical fluctuations is demonstrated by validating it against the one‐dimensional (1‐D) advection problem and the advection–diffusion problem with step field functions. The overall performance of the proposed scheme is also validated by the lid‐driven cavity flow and laminar flow around a circular cylinder, showing good agreement with the existing results, indicating that the proposed scheme has good stability in both temporal and spatial domains.

Abstract:We extend the multilevel Green's function interpolation method (MLGFIM) developed for quasi-electrostatic problems to full-wave simulations. The difficulty in applying the interpolation approach lies in the additional rapidly changing phase term associated with the full-wave Green's functions. To enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the full-wave Green's function interpolation, a scattered point set consisting of two staggered Tartan grids in conjunction with radial basis function interpolation is employed. To further reduce the computational complexity, the QR factorization technique is applied to compress the low rank Green's function matrices. For electromagnetic scattering from PEC spheres up to a diameter of eight wavelengths, the proposed method compares well with Mie's scattering in accuracy and shows the O(NlogN) efficiency. As the method is "kernel independent", its extension to structures in layered medium is straightforward. In the numerical simulations of finite microstrip patch arrays up to 11 by 11 elements, the proposed method demonstrates very favorable dependencies of CPU time and memory storage requirement versus the number of unknowns

Abstract:Meshless methods based on collocation with radial basis functions (RBFs) are investigated in detail in this paper. Both globally supported and compactly supported radial basis functions are used with collocation to solve partial differential equations (PDEs). Using RBFs as a meshless collocation method to solve PDEs possesses some advantages. It is a truly mesh-free method, and is space dimension independent. Furthermore, in the context of scattered data interpolation it is known that some radial basis functions have spectral convergence orders. This study shows that the accuracy of derivatives of interpolating functions are usually very poor on boundary of domain when a direct collocation method is used, therefore it will result in significant error in solving a PDE with Neumann boundary conditions. Based on this fact, a Hermite type collocation method is proposed in this paper, in which both PDEs and prescribed traction boundary conditions are imposed on prescribed traction boundary. Numerical studies shows that the Hermite type collocation method improve the accuracy significantly.

Abstract:In this paper, quasi-interpolation for scattered data was studied. On the basis of generalized quasi-interpolation for scattered data proposed in [Z.M. Wu and J.P. Liu, Generalized strang-fix condition for scattered data quasi-interpolation, Adv. Comput. Math. 23 (2005), pp. 201-214.], we have developed a new method to construct the kernel in the scheme by the linear combination of the scales, instead of the gridded shifts of the radial basis function. Compared with the kernel proposed in [Z.M. Wu and J.P. Liu, Generalized strang-fix condition for scattered data quasi-interpolation, Adv. Comput. Math. 23 (2005), pp. 201-214.], the new kernel, which is still a radial function, possesses the feature of polynomial reproducing property. This opens a possibility for us to propose a different technique by obtaining a higher approximation order of the convergence.

Abstract:This work presents a novel simulation approach to couple the meshfree radial point interpolation method (RPIM) with the implicit direct time integration method for the transient analysis of wave propagation dynamics in non-homogeneous media. In this approach, the RPIM is adopted for the discretization of the overall space domain, while the discretization of the time domain is completed by employing the efficient Bathe time stepping scheme. The dispersion analysis demonstrates that, in wave analysis, the amount of numerical dispersion error resulting from the discretization in the space domain can be suppressed at a very low level when the employed nodal support domain of the interpolation function is adequately large. Meanwhile, it is also mathematically shown that the amount of numerical error resulting from the time domain discretization is actually a monotonically decreasing function of the non-dimensional time domain discretization interval. Consequently, the present simulation approach is capable of effectively handling the transient analysis of wave propagation dynamics in non-homogeneous media, and the disparate waves with different speeds can be solved concurrently with very high computation accuracy. This numerical feature makes the present simulation approach more suitable for complicated wave analysis than the traditional finite element approach because the waves with disparate speeds always cannot be concurrently solved accurately. Several numerical tests are given to check the performance of the present simulation approach for the analysis of wave propagation dynamics in non-homogeneous media.

Abstract:We study the numerical evaluation of the integral fractional Laplacian and its application in solving fractional diffusion equations. We derive a pseudo-spectral formula for the integral fractional Laplacian operator based on fractional order-dependent, generalized multi-quadratic radial basis functions (RBFs) to address efficient computation of the hyper-singular integral. We apply the proposed formula to solving fractional diffusion equations and design a simple, easy-to-implement and nearly integration-free meshless method. We discuss the convergence of the novel meshless method through equivalent Galerkin formulations. We carry out numerical experiments to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach compared to the existing method using Gaussian RBFs.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents the meshless method using radial polynomials with the combination of the multiple source collocation scheme for solving elliptic boundary value problems. In the proposed method, the basis function is based on the radial polynomials, which is different from the conventional radial basis functions that approximate the solution using the specific function such as the multiquadric function with the shape parameter for infinitely differentiable. The radial polynomial basis function is a non–singular series function in nature which is infinitely smooth and differentiable in nature without using the shape parameter. With the combination of the multiple source collocation scheme, the center point is regarded as the source point for the interpolation of the radial polynomials. Numerical solutions in multiple dimensions are approximated by applying the radial polynomials with given terms of the radial polynomials. The comparison of the proposed method with the radial basis function collocation method (RBFCM) using the multiquadric and polyharmonic spline functions is conducted. Results demonstrate that the accuracy obtained from the proposed method is better than that of the conventional RBFCM with the same number of collocation points. In addition, highly accurate solutions with the increase of radial polynomial terms may be obtained.</p>

Abstract:Meshless method is a recently-developed new numerical approach.Many different meshless methods have been constructed based on different approximation function methods and different discretized schemes of partial differential equations (PDEs).In this paper,its basic principle was introduced and the construction methods for the approximation function and the discretization of the partial differential equations were presented.The characteristics of weight function and the shape function were analyzed in detail taking the moving least-squares (MLS) method as an example.Results show that radial basis function (RBF) and point interpolation methods possess Kronecker Delta function property (δ function),but the robustness is poor in some cases;the MLS approximation function does not possess Kronecker Delta function property,but it has good robustness.Differences among the three discretization schemes of meshless method are as follows:the collocation method requires no numerical integration and very little computational time while its robustness is poor;Galerkin method is not a truly meshless method due to the background meshes required for integration;the Petrov-Galerkin method is a truly meshless method and need numerical integration in each sub-domain,so it needs more computational time.

Abstract:A meshless local radial basis function method is developed for two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The distributed nodes used to store the variables are obtained by the philosophy of an unstructured mesh, which results in two main advantages of the method. One is that the unstructured nodes generation in the computational domain is quite simple, without much concern about the mesh quality; the other is that the localization of the obtained collocations for the discretization of equations is performed conveniently with the supporting nodes. The algebraic system is solved by a semi-implicit pseudo-time method, in which the convective and source terms are explicitly marched by the Runge-Kutta method, and the diffusive terms are implicitly solved. The proposed method is validated by several benchmark problems, including natural convection in a square cavity, the lid-driven cavity flow, and the natural convection in a square cavity containing a circular cylinder, and very good agreement with the existing results are obtained.
A Non-Nested Multilevel Method for Meshless Solution of the Poisson Equation in Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow

Abstract:We present a non-nested multilevel algorithm for solving the Poisson equation discretized at scattered points using polyharmonic radial basis function (PHS-RBF) interpolations. We append polynomials to the radial basis functions to achieve exponential convergence of discretization errors. The interpolations are performed over local clouds of points and the Poisson equation is collocated at each of the scattered points, resulting in a sparse set of discrete equations for the unkown variables. To solve this set of equations, we have developed a non-nested multilevel algorithm utilizing multiple independently generated coarse sets of points. The restriction and prolongation operators are also constructed with the same RBF interpolations procedure. The performance of the algorithm for Dirichlet and all-Neumann boundary conditions is evaluated in three model geometries using a manufactured solution. For Dirichlet boundary conditions, rapid convergence is observed using SOR point solver as the relaxation scheme. For cases of all-Neumann boundary conditions, convergence is seen to slow down with the degree of the appended polynomial. However, when the multilevel procedure is combined with a GMRES algorithm, the convergence is seen to significantly improve. The GMRES accelerated multilevel algorithm is included in a fractional step method to solve incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.

Abstract:Meshless collocation methods for the numerical solutions of PDEs are increasingly adopted due to their advantages including efficiency and flexibility, and radial basis functions are popularly employed to represent the solutions of PDEs. Motivated by the advantages of ridge basis function representation of a given function, such as the connection to neural network, fast convergence as the number of terms is increased, better approximation effects and various applications in engineering problems, a meshless method is developed based on the collocation method and ridge basis function interpolation. This method is a truly meshless technique without mesh discretization: it neither needs the computation of integrals, nor requires a partition of the region and its boundary. Moreover, the method is applied to elliptic equations to examine its appropriateness, numerical results are compared to that obtained from other (meshless) methods, and influence factors of accuracy for numerical solutions are analyzed.

Abstract:Based on our previously study, the accuracy of derivatives of interpolating functions are usually very poor near the boundary of domain when Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions (CSRBFs) are used, so that it could result in significant error in solving partial differential equations with Neumann boundary conditions. To overcome this drawback, the Consistent Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions (CCSRBFs) are developed, which satisfy the predetermined consistency conditions. Meshless method based on point collocation with CCSRBFs is developed for solving partial differential equations. Numerical studies show that the proposed method improves the accuracy of approximation significantly.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide the theoretical justification of general meshless Schwarz method using radial basis functions. Using this meshless method, we only need to solve many small problems instead of one big ill-conditioned problem, and get the results with almost the same accurate. The only premise we need in our meshless method is that the resultant coefficient matrix of the linear algebra equations which we got when we solve the partial differential equations is positive definite, and which can usually be satisfied if we use meshless Galerkin method or meshless Hermitian–Birkhoff's collocation method.
A novel Mortar Method Integration using Radial Basis Functions

Abstract:The growing availability of computational resources has significantly increased the interest of the scientific community in performing complex multi-physics and multi-domain simulations. However, the generation of appropriate computational grids for such problems often remains one of the main bottlenecks. The use of a domain partitioning with non-conforming grids is a possible solution, which, however, requires the development of robust and efficient inter-grid interpolation operators to transfer a scalar or a vector field from one domain to another. This work presents a novel approach for interpolating quantities across non-conforming meshes within the framework of the classical mortar method, where weak continuity conditions are enforced. The key contribution is the introduction of a novel strategy that uses mesh-free Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolations to compute the mortar integral, offering a compelling alternative to traditional projection-based methods. We propose an efficient algorithm tailored for complex three-dimensional settings allowing for potentially significant savings in the overall computational cost and ease of implementation, with no detrimental effects on the numerical accuracy. The formulation, analysis, and validation of the proposed RBF-based algorithm is discussed with the aid of a set of numerical examples, demonstrating its effectiveness. Furthermore, the details of the implementation are discussed and a test case involving a complex geometry is presented, to illustrate the applicability and advantages of our approach in real-world problems.

Abstract:In this work the novel ρ ∞ -Bathe direct time integration algorithm is combined with the classical meshless radial point interpolation method to solve transient elastodynamic problems. The present combined numerical approach makes the best use of high computation accuracy of the RPIM in spatial discretization and high numerical stability of the ρ ∞ -Bathe method in temporal discretization. In addition, we theoretically show the total dispersion error of the obtained numerical solutions in transient elastodynamic analysis can be split into the spatial error and temporal error, which respectively show the monotonic convergence property with respect to the decreasing element sizes and time integration steps. The relationship among the spatial discretization error, temporal discretization error and total numerical error is also characterized in a simple and elegant form. The present study can explain theoretically why the present combined numerical approach possesses the important monotonic convergence property in solving transient elastodynamic problems. Due to this attractive property, the quality of the numerical solutions can be monotonically improved by directly using the decreasing time steps as long as a relatively reasonable spatial discretization is employed. Three typical numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate that the important monotonic convergence property for transient elastodynamic analysis indeed can be achieved by the present combined numerical approach, hence the proposed combined numerical approach has a wide prospect for tackling very complex transient elastodynamic problems, such as the wave propagation in anisotropic media and laminated composite structures.
