Abstract:In this paper, we will introduce a new meshless method for the numerical solutions of the partial differential equations. It can be regarded as one of the Petrov–Galerkin methods (see [Zhang yun-xin, Tan yong-ji, Solve PDEs using meshless Petrov–Galerkin Methods with RBFs, submitted for publication]), in which the test space is generated by the radial basis functions (RBFs), and the trial space is generated by some characteristic functions. But it is more efficient than the usual Petrov–Galerkin methods because the complicated integrals in the usual Petrov–Galerkin methods are replaced by the simple local boundary integrals. The numerical examples indicate it is really an accurate and efficient meshless method. Certainly our method also can be regarded as one of the weighted residual methods, or the generalization of the collocation methods.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved meshfree scheme based on radial basis functions (RBFs) is provided for solving the incompressible viscous Navier–Stokes equations and two enhancements are proposed to mitigate the typical numerical oscillations. The first one is the combination of the RBFs‐based finite difference (RBF‐FD) method with the semi‐Lagrangian RBFs (SLM‐RBF), with the former being used for the viscous diffusion term and pressure Poisson equation and the latter being used for the advection term. The second enhancement is a regularization term that constructs smooth constraints for RBFs interpolations instead of clipping operations. The capability of the proposed scheme in mitigating numerical fluctuations is demonstrated by validating it against the one‐dimensional (1‐D) advection problem and the advection–diffusion problem with step field functions. The overall performance of the proposed scheme is also validated by the lid‐driven cavity flow and laminar flow around a circular cylinder, showing good agreement with the existing results, indicating that the proposed scheme has good stability in both temporal and spatial domains.

Abstract:Meshless method is a recently-developed new numerical approach.Many different meshless methods have been constructed based on different approximation function methods and different discretized schemes of partial differential equations (PDEs).In this paper,its basic principle was introduced and the construction methods for the approximation function and the discretization of the partial differential equations were presented.The characteristics of weight function and the shape function were analyzed in detail taking the moving least-squares (MLS) method as an example.Results show that radial basis function (RBF) and point interpolation methods possess Kronecker Delta function property (δ function),but the robustness is poor in some cases;the MLS approximation function does not possess Kronecker Delta function property,but it has good robustness.Differences among the three discretization schemes of meshless method are as follows:the collocation method requires no numerical integration and very little computational time while its robustness is poor;Galerkin method is not a truly meshless method due to the background meshes required for integration;the Petrov-Galerkin method is a truly meshless method and need numerical integration in each sub-domain,so it needs more computational time.
A New Rbf-Trefftz Meshless Method For Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:Based on the radial basis functions (RBF) and T-Trefftz solution, this paper presents a new meshless method for numerically solving various partial differential equation systems. First, the analog equation method (AEM) is used to convert the original patial differential equation to an equivalent Poisson's equation. Then, the radial basis functions (RBF) are employed to approxiamate the inhomogeneous term, while the homogeneous solution is obtained by linear combination of a set of T-Trefftz solutions. The present scheme, named RBF-Trefftz has the advantage over the fundamental solution (MFS) method due to the use of nonsingular T-Trefftz solution rather than singular fundamental solutions, so it does not require the artificial boundary. The application and efficiency of the proposed method are validated through several examples which include different type of differential equations, such as Laplace equation, Hellmholtz equation, convectin-diffusion equation and time-dependent equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide the theoretical justification of general meshless Schwarz method using radial basis functions. Using this meshless method, we only need to solve many small problems instead of one big ill-conditioned problem, and get the results with almost the same accurate. The only premise we need in our meshless method is that the resultant coefficient matrix of the linear algebra equations which we got when we solve the partial differential equations is positive definite, and which can usually be satisfied if we use meshless Galerkin method or meshless Hermitian–Birkhoff's collocation method.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents the meshless method using radial polynomials with the combination of the multiple source collocation scheme for solving elliptic boundary value problems. In the proposed method, the basis function is based on the radial polynomials, which is different from the conventional radial basis functions that approximate the solution using the specific function such as the multiquadric function with the shape parameter for infinitely differentiable. The radial polynomial basis function is a non–singular series function in nature which is infinitely smooth and differentiable in nature without using the shape parameter. With the combination of the multiple source collocation scheme, the center point is regarded as the source point for the interpolation of the radial polynomials. Numerical solutions in multiple dimensions are approximated by applying the radial polynomials with given terms of the radial polynomials. The comparison of the proposed method with the radial basis function collocation method (RBFCM) using the multiquadric and polyharmonic spline functions is conducted. Results demonstrate that the accuracy obtained from the proposed method is better than that of the conventional RBFCM with the same number of collocation points. In addition, highly accurate solutions with the increase of radial polynomial terms may be obtained.</p>

Abstract:Meshless methods based on collocation with radial basis functions (RBFs) are investigated in detail in this paper. Both globally supported and compactly supported radial basis functions are used with collocation to solve partial differential equations (PDEs). Using RBFs as a meshless collocation method to solve PDEs possesses some advantages. It is a truly mesh-free method, and is space dimension independent. Furthermore, in the context of scattered data interpolation it is known that some radial basis functions have spectral convergence orders. This study shows that the accuracy of derivatives of interpolating functions are usually very poor on boundary of domain when a direct collocation method is used, therefore it will result in significant error in solving a PDE with Neumann boundary conditions. Based on this fact, a Hermite type collocation method is proposed in this paper, in which both PDEs and prescribed traction boundary conditions are imposed on prescribed traction boundary. Numerical studies shows that the Hermite type collocation method improve the accuracy significantly.

Abstract:Meshfree method based on radial basis functions is a popular tool used to numerically solve partial differential equations. This paper deals with the convergence and stability of the proposed method for hyperbolic partial differential equations with piecewise constant arguments. Firstly, we apply central difference to the time variable and θ-weighted finite difference to the original equation simultaneously, then the numerical scheme is obtained by using the meshfree method based on radial basis functions to approximate the unknown function and its second-order spatial derivative. Secondly, the convergence is analysed in -norm and the sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of the numerical solution are acquired under which the analytic solution is asymptotically stable. Finally, our study is supported by several numerical experiments.

Abstract:Based on our previously study, the accuracy of derivatives of interpolating functions are usually very poor near the boundary of domain when Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions (CSRBFs) are used, so that it could result in significant error in solving partial differential equations with Neumann boundary conditions. To overcome this drawback, the Consistent Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions (CCSRBFs) are developed, which satisfy the predetermined consistency conditions. Meshless method based on point collocation with CCSRBFs is developed for solving partial differential equations. Numerical studies show that the proposed method improves the accuracy of approximation significantly.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to solve numerically, using the meshless method via radial basis functions, time-space-fractional partial differential equations of type Black-Scholes. The time-fractional partial differential equation appears in several diffusion problems used in physics and engineering applications, and models subdiffusive and superdiffusive behavior of the prices at the stock market. This work shows the flexibility of the radial basis function scheme to solve multidimensional problems with several types of nodes and it also shows how to reduce the condition number of the matrices involved.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:This paper is devoted to designing a novel domain decomposition method (DDM) for highly oscillating partial differential equations (PDE), especially, where the asymmetric meshless collocation method using radial basis functions (RBF), also Kansa's method is applied for a numerical solutions. It is found that the numerical error become worse when the original solution become more oscillating. To conquer this defect, we use a novel domain decomposition method which is motivated by time parallel algorithm. This DDM is based on a decomposition of computational domain by a coarse centers and a finer distribution of distinct centers. A corrector is designed to obtain better numerical solution after several iteration. Theoretical analysis and numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:R-function method(RFM) is an effective method to construct an analytical function which satisfy the boundary condition of differential equation. Combined with the compactly supported radial basis function(RBF), a semi-analytical meshless method is established. Compared with direct RBF method, the support size of RBF is smaller and the coefficient matrix is more spare but numerical solution still keep the accuracy. Numerical experiments show the effect of the method.

Abstract:This paper aims to develop an implicit meshless approach based on the radial basis function (RBF) for numerical simulation of time fractional diffusion equations. The meshless RBF interpolation is firstly briefed. The discrete equations for two-dimensional time fractional diffusion equation (FDE) are obtained by using the meshless RBF shape functions and the strong-forms of the time FDE. The stability and convergence of this meshless approach are discussed and theoretically proven. Numerical examples with different problem domains and different nodal distributions are studied to validate and investigate accuracy and efficiency of the newly developed meshless approach. It has proven that the present meshless formulation is very effective for modeling and simulation of fractional differential equations.

Abstract:Recently, the numerical modelling and simulation for anomalous subdiffusion equation (ASDE), which is a type of fractional partial differential equation( FPDE) and has been found with widely applications in modern engineering and sciences, are attracting more and more attentions. The current dominant numerical method for modelling ASDE is Finite Difference Method (FDM), which is based on a pre-defined grid leading to inherited issues or shortcomings. This paper aims to develop an implicit meshless approach based on the radial basis functions (RBF) for numerical simulation of the non-linear ASDE. The discrete system of equations is obtained by using the meshless shape functions and the strong-forms. The stability and convergence of this meshless approach are then discussed and theoretically proven. Several numerical examples with different problem domains are used to validate and investigate accuracy and efficiency of the newly developed meshless formulation. The results obtained by the meshless formulations are also compared with those obtained by FDM in terms of their accuracy and efficiency. It is concluded that the present meshless formulation is very effective for the modeling and simulation of the ASDE. Therefore, the meshless technique should have good potential in development of a robust simulation tool for problems in engineering and science which are governed by the various types of fractional differential equations.
A Meshfree RBF-FD Constant along Normal Method for Solving PDEs on Surfaces

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel meshfree methodology based on Radial Basis Function-Finite Difference (RBF-FD) approximations for the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) on surfaces of codimension 1 embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The method is built upon the principles of the closest point method, without the use of a grid or a closest point mapping. We show that the combination of local embedded stencils with these principles can be employed to approximate surface derivatives using polyharmonic spline kernels and polynomials (PHS+Poly) RBF-FD. Specifically, we show that it is enough to consider a constant extension along the normal direction only at a single node to overcome the rank deficiency of the polynomial basis. An extensive parameter analysis is presented to test the dependence of the approach. We demonstrate high-order convergence rates on problems involving surface advection and surface diffusion, and solve Turing pattern formations on surfaces defined either implicitly or by point clouds. Moreover, a simple coupling approach with a particle tracking method demonstrates the potential of the proposed method in solving PDEs on evolving surfaces in the normal direction. Our numerical results confirm the stability, flexibility, and high-order algebraic convergence of the approach.

Abstract:In the context of method of approximate particular solutions (MAPS), we propose a novel meshless computational scheme based on hybrid radial basis function (RBF)-polynomial bases to solve both parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations over a large terminal time interval on irregular spatial domain. By using space–time approach, the original time-dependent problem is firstly reformulated into an elliptic boundary value problem. Integrated polyharmonic splines (PS)-type RBF kernels in conjunction with multivariate polynomials are then employed to construct the approximate solution space. This superior combination enables us to stably achieve highly accurate solution. Due to the adoption of the polyharmonic splines, the difficulty of determining a suitable shape parameter of RBF is alleviated. Moreover, employing the recently developed ghost point method, the precision and stability of the approximation can be further enhanced. For numerical verification, four examples are investigated to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed methodology in terms of the aforementioned advantages.
