Abstract:Laser ablation in liquid (LAL) has received considerable attention over the last decade, and is gradually becoming an irreplaceable technique to synthesize nanocrystals and fabricate functional nanostructures because it can offer effective solutions to some challenges in the field of nanotechnology. The goal of this review is to offer a comprehensive summary of recent developments of LAL in nanocrystal synthesis and nanostructure fabrication. First, we will introduce the fundamental processes of microsecond, nanosecond, and femtosecond LAL, and how the active species act differently in plasma, cavitation bubbles, and droplets in the different LAL processes. Second, a variety of LAL-based techniques for nanomaterials synthesis and processing are presented, such as electric-, magnetic-, and temperature-field LAL, as well as electrochemically assisted LAL, pulsed laser deposition in liquid, and laser writing of nanopatterns in liquid. Third, new progress in LAL-generated nanomaterials is described. Fourth, we emphasize five applications of LAL-generated nanomaterials that have emerged recently in the fields of optics, magnetism, environment, energy, and biomedicine. Finally, we consider the core advantages of LAL, the limitations of LAL and corresponding solutions, and the future directions in this promising research area.

Abstract:Although nanomaterials investigations have been carried over the recent decades, researchers still face a fundamental challenge: how to control the phase, size and shape of nanocrystals in the synthesis of nanomaterials, i.e., how to achieve the transformation from nanocrytsal synthesis to functional nanostructure fabrication. For this issue, we, in this review, introduce recent developments in laser ablation in liquid (LAL) for the synthesis and fabrication of novel nanostructures with metastable phases and shapes. Laser ablation of solid targets in liquid has actually opened a door toward to synthesize nanocrystals and fabricate nanostructures due to these advantages as follows: (i) LAL is a chemically "simple and clean" synthesis due to the process with reduced byproduct formation, simpler starting materials, no need for catalyst, etc. (ii) Under ambient conditions, not extreme temperature and pressure, a variety of metastable phases that may not usually be attainable, can be generated by mild preparation methods. (iii) New phase formation involves in both liquid and solid upon LAL, which allows researchers to choose and combine interesting solid target and liquid to synthesize nanocrystals and fabricate nanostructures of new compounds for purpose of fundamental research and potential applications. (iv) The phase, size and shape of the synthesized nanocrystals can be readily controlled by tuning laser parameters and applying assistances such as inorganic salts or electrical field upon LAL. For example, we have synthesized the micro- and nanocubes of carbon with C(8)-like structures by the inorganic salts assisted LAL, and the micro- and nanocubes and spindles of GeO(2) by the electrical field assisted LAL. Additionally, we have developed a new technique to fabricate functional nanopatterns on the basis of the pulsed-laser deposition in liquid. Accordingly, LAL could greatly extend its application in fabrication of functional nanostructures in the future.
From Nanocrystal Synthesis To Nanomanufacturing: Laser Ablation In Liquid

Abstract:The history of laser-induced formation of nanomaterials runs parallel to the development of laser science, starting with the early use of a ruby laser for producing sparks in gases. However, till date researchers face a fundamental challenge: how to prepare nanomaterials by controlling the phase, size, and shape in the synthesis of nanomaterials, that is, how to achieve the transformation from nanocrystal synthesis to nanomanufacturing. In this chapter we present a review on the recent progress in laser ablation of a solid target in a liquid, which has actually opened the doors for the synthesis of nanocrystals and nanostructures because of its several advantages. The chapter focuses on investigations ranging from traditional laser-induced nanocrystals formation to the synthesis and manufacturing of novel nanostructures with metastable phases and shapes. For example, the synthesis of micro- and nanocubes of silicon with the zinc blend structure by adding inorganic salts upon laser ablation in liquids and the preparation of micro- and nanocubes of GeO2 by applying an electric field upon laser ablation in liquids are reported in this chapter. In addition, further investigations on the synthesis of the new carbon nanocrystals with C-8 and C-8-like structures and the nanopattern fabrication by pulsed-laser deposition in liquid are also presented. Note that all these synthesized nanostructures have metastable phases or metastable shapes, which means that the formation of metastable phases and shapes seem preferable upon laser ablation in liquids.

Abstract:The demand is growing for new nanoscience-based technologies with unique properties that are different from traditional wet-chemical techniques. In recent years, laser ablation in liquid (LAL) has attracted increasing attention for nanomaterial synthesis, which has rapidly advanced both fundamental research and applications. Compared to other techniques, LAL is easy to set up and simple to perform. A large diversity of bulk and powder targets can be employed for LAL, which combined with an enormous variety of liquids, greatly diversify the nanomaterials that can be synthesized by LAL in terms of size, composition, shape, and structure. Although many reviews related to LAL have been published, a comprehensively thorough introduction that deals with the diversity of the targets and liquids used for LAL is still missing. To fill this gap, this review gives a comprehensive summary of the nanomaterials synthesized by LAL using different types of target and liquid, with an emphasis on the effects of liquids on the final nanoproducts. In order to provide a better understanding of the liquids' effects, this review also discusses liquid additives such as salts, polymers, support materials, and their mixtures. Since many reactions occur during LAL, the scope of reactive laser ablation in liquid (RLAL) is redefined, and the representative reactions for each type of liquid used for LAL are summarized and highlighted. Consequently, this review will be a useful guide for researchers developing desirable nanomaterials via LAL.

Abstract:Laser ablation in liquid (LAL) is one of the important technologies for preparing nanomaterials. In this article, Al nanoparticles (NPs) are fabricated by laser ablation in three different organic solvents. The thermodynamic properties within the bubble are studied using ultrafast camera and an analytical model based on Rayleigh-Plesset equation. Combined with the NPs characterization, the correlation between the bubble dynamics and the formation of NPs is discussed. The results show that complex physical and chemical reactions inside the bubble affect the bubble dynamics. At the same time, the bubble dynamics in turn affect the morphology and properties of the nanoproducts.

Abstract:Laser ablation has emerged as a novel method to synthesize various nanomaterials.1-3 Currently, most works merely focus on the material synthesis using laser ablation technique with little attention to the relationship between the ablated substrates and the synthesized materials. This work is aimed at filling this gap and giving new insights based on laser ablation of single crystal diamond-cubic (dc) (400) Si in air. Polycrystallization is a ubiquitous phenomenon occurring during laser ablation of Si. The polycrystallization rate of the ablated areas increases with increasing the laser powers, which well explains the polycrystalline instinct of the synthesized nanomaterials. Faster cooling rates of the laser-generated molten Si layers over their nucleation rates result in the surface amorphoization. The molten layers together with the newly formed polycrystalline Si materials will be pushed upward in air by shockwaves to solidify into the amorphous SiOx encapsulated polycrystalline Si composites. Abstract:To have a clear physical insight into the nanocrystal formation upon pulsed-laser ablation in liquid, we proposed a theoretical kinetic approach to elucidate the nucleation and growth of nanocrystals with respect to the capillary effect of the nanometer-sized curvature of crystalline nuclei. Taking the nanodiamond synthesis by pulsed-laser ablating a graphite target in water as an example, we predicted the nucleation time, growth velocity, and the grown size of nanodiamonds on the basis of the proposed kinetic model, and found that these theoretical results are in well agreement with our experiment cases. We expected that the kinetic approach is generally applicable to understanding the basic physics of nanocrystal formation in pulsed-laser ablation in liquid.

Abstract:Laser synthesis emerges as a suitable technique to produce ligand-free nanoparticles, alloys and functionalized nanomaterials for catalysis, imaging, biomedicine, energy and environmental applications. In the last decade, laser ablation and nanoparticle generation in liquids has proven to be a unique and efficient technique to generate, excite, fragment and conjugate a large variety of nanostructures in a scalable and clean way. In this work, we give an overview on the fundamentals of pulsed laser synthesis of nanocolloids and new information about its scalability towards selected applications. Biomedicine, catalysis and sensing are the application areas mainly discussed in this review, highlighting advantages of laser-synthesized nanoparticles for these types of applications and, once partially resolved, the limitations to the technique for large-scale applications.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the usefulness of pulsed laser ablation in liquids as a fast screening synthesis method able to prepare even complex compositions at the nanoscale. Nanoparticles of Y2O3:Eu3+, Lu2O2S: Eu3+, Gd2SiO5:Ce3+ and Lu3TaO7:Gd3+,Tb3+ are successfully synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquids. The phase and stoichiometries of the original materials are preserved while the sizes are reduced down to 5-10 nm. The optical properties of the materials are also preserved but show some small variations and some additional structures which are attributed to the specificities of the nanoscale (internal pressure, inhomogeneous broadening, surface states...)

Abstract:Two-beam interference ablation of 1,4-Bis(4-methylstyryl)benzene organic crystal by short laser pulses (10 ns, 355 nm) is presented. The influence of laser fluence, interference period, and pulse number on the morphology have been studied. The morphology is closely associated with the molecular interactions in the crystals, and it could be well controlled by adjusting the laser fluence and pulses number. Through interference ablating the crystals with high fluence pulses, and then treated with low fluence laser pulses, grating structures with smooth surface could be fabricated without any additional process.

Abstract:YAG:Ce3+ nanocrystals are promising bio-labeling materials due to their low toxicity and high photostability. It is in demand to efficiently synthesize YAG:Ce3+ nanocrystals of a small size. Pulse laser ablation is an approach to produce nanoparticles directly from bulk materials with the advantages of smaller particle sizes and lower production costs. Here, we present the synthesis of YAG:Ce3+ nanocrystals from bulk crystal using the femtosecond laser ablation method in liquid. Comparing the liquid environment, we demonstrated that the lauryl dimethylaminoacetic acid betain (LDA) aqueous solution is preferred for the formation of smaller-sized YAG:Ce3+ nanoparticles than deionized water due to the attractiveness between the LDA molecules and the YAG:Ce3+ nanoparticles. We also verified that the high laser repetition rate had no effect on the average size of YAG:Ce3+ nanocrystals, where the fragmentation process is saturated under a high laser repetition rate. This study provides a simple and effective method to synthesize small size YAG:Ce3+ nanoparticles by femtosecond laser ablation in liquid.
