Abstract:Phase-pure and nearly monodispersed LiNbO3 nanocrystals are obtained by a nonaqueous sol-gel process, in which the reaction degrees of the precursors [LiNO3 and Nb(OEt)(5)] are precisely controlled to match each other. The concentration of hydrogen-related defects affects the H-2 evolution activities of the LiNbO3 nanocrystals.

Abstract:As a promising visible-light-driven photocatalyst for hydrogen generation, InNbO4 of high efficiency dictates the requirements on the high specific surface area and tailored band structure that arouse increasing efforts but remain challenge. Herein, we report fabrication of nanosized InNbO4 embedded with nano-voids via apolyacrylamide sol-gel route. It exhibits excellent photocatalytic H-2 evolution rates up to similar to 68.1 mu mol.h(-1).g(-1), much better than as-reported counterparts (similar to 1 mu mol.h(-1).g(-1)) obtained via solid-state reaction or doping treatments. The particle sizes, density of nano-voids, as well as the bandgap energy are modulated by using different chelating agents, including tartaric acid (TA), citric acid (CA), acetic acid (AA). Based on high resolution high angle annular dark-field (HAADF) characterizations, it interesting to discover that the photocatalytic performance shows obvious dependence on the voids size. Nano-voids (2-8 tim) can maximize the specific surface and thus enhance the photocatalytic performance, while lattice-scale voids (<1.5 nm) may become a carrier trapping defects and thus decrease the photocatalytic performance. This work lays a foundation for further promoting activity of InNbO4 photocatalysts through balanced optimization of microstructure and band structure. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on a nonaqueous synthesis of single crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods by reaction between TiCl4 and benzyl alcohol at a low temperature of 80°C. The resulting samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. We proposed that the TiO2 nanorods were formed through an oriented attachment mechanism. More importantly, these single crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activities than commercial photocatalyst P25. This study provides an environmentally friendly and economic approach to produce highly active TiO2 photocatalyst.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline InOOH photocatalyst was synthesized from In (NO3)(3) and ethylenediamine via a solvothermal method. The obtained sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). InOOH can degrade rhodamine B(RhB) to CO2 and H2O under UV irradiation, while it can only degrade RIM to de-ethylated product under visible-light irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation of RhB follows two different reaction mechanisms under UV light and visible light.

Abstract:Novel g-C3N4/(BiO)2CO3 organic-inorganic nanojunctioned photocatalysts were synthesized by in situ depositing (BiO)2CO3 nanoflakes onto the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets through a one-pot efficient capture of atmospheric CO2 method at room temperature. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 adsorption-desorption analysis and electron spin resonance (ESR). The photocatalytic activity of as-synthesized samples was evaluated by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol in aqueous solution under visible-light irradiation. The g-C3N4/(BiO)2CO3 nanojunctions showed much higher visible-light photocatalytic activity than those of pure g-C3N4 and (BiO)2CO3 for the degradation of RhB and phenol. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be mainly ascribed to the well-matched band structures, dye photosensitization and efficient crystal facets coupling interaction between g-C3N4 {002} and (BiO)2CO3 {002}. The ˙O2(-) radicals were identified as the main active species. Furthermore, the pure (BiO)2CO3 with highly exposed {002} crystal facets also exhibited excellent visible-light photoactivity for the degradation of RhB, which can be originated from the indirect dye photosensitization. The present work could provide a new strategy for the efficient utilization of atmospheric CO2 in green synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:A general nonaqueous route for the synthesis of phase-pure transition-metal niobate (InNbO4, MnNb2O6, and YNbO4) nanocrystals was developed based on the one-pot solvothermal reaction of niobium chloride and the corresponding transition-metal acetylacetonates in benzyl alcohol at 200 degrees C. All samples were carefully characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The crystallization mechanism of these niobate nanocrystals points to a two-step pathway. First, metal hydroxide crystals and amorphous niobium oxide are formed. Second, metal niobate nanocrystals are generated from the intermediates by a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. The reaction mechanisms, that is, the processes responsible for the oxygen supply for oxide formation, were found to be rather complex and involve niobium-mediated ether elimination as the main pathway, accompanied by solvolysis of the acetylacetonate ligands and benzylation reactions.

Abstract:Herein, we report nonaqueous synthesis of metal cyanamide semiconductor nanocrystals, including Ag2NCN nanorods (NRs), ZnNCN NRs and PbNCN nanoparticles. The as-prepared Ag2NCN NRs with a band gap of 2.35 eV are applied as photocatalysts for water oxidation. Their oxygen evolution rate (280.7 lmol h(-1) g(-1)) is much higher than that of Ag2NCN microcrystals (24.0 lmol h(-1) g(-1)).

Abstract:Multiferroic BiFeO3–(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 (BFO–NBT) nanopowders were successfully synthesized by a sol–gel method, and the visible-light photocatalytic and magnetic properties of BFO–NBT nanopowders were investigated. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the adding of NBT and the excess of natrium source could suppress the formation of secondary phases and made it easier to obtain single perovskite phase. High photoactivity of this catalyst for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible-light irradiation was detected, which is due to narrow band gap energy of 2.08 eV, higher surface area and pure phase compounds with no or less amounts of impurities. The BFO–NBT nanopowders showed a weak ferromagnetic order at room temperature, which should be attributed to the size-confinement effects of the nanostructures. It is suggested that BFO–NBT is a kind of new narrow band gap semiconductor visible-light photocatalyst with broad application prospects, in addition to potential applications for novel magnetoelectric devices.

Abstract:NaNbO3 nanowires and cubes were synthesized by means of a facile surfactant-assisted hydrothermal process. The NaNbO3 nanowires were single-crystalline and showed uniform size with a diameter of about 100 nanometers in width and length of up to several tens of micrometers in length. The NaNbO3 cubes displayed edges of several hundred nanometers. Meanwhile, the possible growth mechanism of NaNbO3 nanowires was proposed. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of the NaNbO3 samples were evaluated for the H-2 evolution from CH3OH/H2O solution under UV light irradiation. Compared with the cubes-NaNbO3 and a NaNbO3 sample prepared by solid state reaction method, NaNbO3 nanowires showed a much higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Undoped and Nb-doped TiO2 nanocrystals are prepared by a microwave-assisted non-aqueous sol-gel method based on a slow alkyl chloride elimination reaction between metal chlorides and benzyl alcohol. Sub-4 nm nanoparticles are grown under microwave irradiation at 80 °C in only 3 h with precise control of growth parameters and yield. The obtained nanocrystals could be conveniently used to cast compact TiO2 or Nb-doped TiO2 electron transport layers for application in formamidinium lead iodide-based photovoltaic devices. Niobium doping is found to improve the cell performance by increasing the conductivity and mobility of the electron transport layer. At the same time, a measurable decrease in parasitic light absorption in the low wavelength portion of the spectrum was observed.
